Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted tremendous interest because of their rapid improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) from the initial PCE of 3.8% for the first prototype to the certified PCE of 25.2% in 2019. However, the inherent chemical instability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halides influenced by moisture, heat and ultraviolet light is still a critical issue for them to meet application-specific requirements owing to the weak-bonded organic components in the hybrid crystal structure. The use of all-inorganic perovskites CsPbI3-xBrx (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) as light-harvesters by completely substituting organic species with inorganic Cs+ ions has been recently regarded as a promising solar conversion technology. Since the initial efficiency of 2.9% achieved in 2015, the highest PCE record for inorganic PSCs has risen to 18.4% through structure optimization, compositional engineering, interfacial engineering, solvent control and surface passivation, etc. This article is dedicated to providing an up-to-date review on the development of inorganic PSCs tailored by various inorganic perovskite materials with gradually changed optical properties and stability, as well as the film-making methods and interfacial engineering technologies. Their limited efficiencies in theory and recombination mechanisms are also predicted with a detailed balance model. Finally, we focused on the state-of-the-art strategies for enhancing the photovoltaic performance and identified new challenges and outlooks for future studies in this field.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a new class of optoelectronic semiconductors that revolutionized the photovoltaic research in the recent years. The perovskite solar cells present numerous advantages include unique electronic structure, bandgap tunability, superior charge transport properties, facile processing, and low cost. Perovskite solar cells have demonstrated unprecedented progress in efficiency and its architecture evolved over the period of the last 5–6 years, achieving a high power conversion efficiency of about 22% in 2016, serving as a promising candidate with the potential to replace the existing commercial PV technologies. This review discusses the progress of perovskite solar cells focusing on aspects such as superior electronic properties and unique features of halide perovskite materials compared to that of conventional light absorbing semiconductors. The review also presents a brief overview of device architectures, fabrication methods, and interface engineering of perovskite solar cells. The last part of the review elaborates on the major challenges such as hysteresis and stability issues in perovskite solar cells that serve as a bottleneck for successful commercialization of this promising PV technology.

Abstract:The photovoltaics of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have shown rapid improvements in solar cell performance, surpassing the top efficiency of semiconductor compounds such as CdTe and CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) used in solar cells in just about a decade. Perovskite preparation via simple and inexpensive solution processes demonstrates the immense potential of this thin-film solar cell technology to become a low-cost alternative to the presently commercially available photovoltaic technologies. Significant developments in almost all aspects of perovskite solar cells and discoveries of some fascinating properties of such hybrid perovskites have been made recently. This Review describes the fundamentals, recent research progress, present status, and our views on future prospects of perovskite-based photovoltaics, with discussions focused on strategies to improve both intrinsic and extrinsic (environmental) stabilities of high-efficiency devices. Strategies and challenges regarding compositional engineering of the hybrid perovskite structure are discussed, including potentials for developing all-inorganic and lead-free perovskite materials. Looking at the latest cutting-edge research, the prospects for perovskite-based photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices, including non-photovoltaic applications such as X-ray detectors and image sensing devices in industrialization, are described. In addition to the aforementioned major topics, we also review, as a background, our encounter with perovskite materials for the first solar cell application, which should inspire young researchers in chemistry and physics to identify and work on challenging interdisciplinary research problems through exchanges between academia and industry.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells represent a promising third-generation photovoltaic technology with low fabrication cost and high power conversion efficiency. In light of the rapid development of perovskite materials and devices, a systematic survey on the latest advancements covering a broad range of related work is urgently needed. This review summarizes the recent major advances in the research of perovskite solar cells from a material science perspective. The discussed topics include the devices based on different type of perovskites (organic-inorganic hybrid, all-inorganic, and lead-free perovskite and perovskite quantum dots), the properties of perovskite defects, different type of charge transport materials (organic, polymeric, and inorganic hole transport materials and inorganic and organic electron transport materials), counter electrodes, and interfacial materials used to improve the efficiency and stability of devices. Most discussions focus on the key progresses reported within the recent five years. Meanwhile, the major issues limiting the production of perovskite solar cells and the prospects for the future development of related materials are discussed.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells based on organometal halides represent an emerging photovoltaic technology. Perovskite solar cells stem from dye-sensitized solar cells. In a liquid-based dye-sensitized solar cell structure, the adsorption of methylammonium lead halide perovskite on a nanocrystalline TiO2 surface produces a photocurrent with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of around 3–4%, as first discovered in 2009. The PCE was doubled after 2 years by optimizing the perovskite coating conditions. However, the liquid-based perovskite solar cell receives little attention because of its stability issues, including instant dissolution of the perovskite in a liquid electrolyte. A long-term, stable, and high efficiency (∼10%) perovskite solar cell was developed in 2012 by substituting the solid hole conductor with a liquid electrolyte. Efficiencies have quickly risen to 18% in just 2 years. Since PCE values over 20% are realistically anticipated with the use of cheap organometal halide perovskite materials, perovskite solar cells are a promising photovoltaic technology. In this review, the opto-electronic properties of perovskite materials and recent progresses in perovskite solar cells are described. In addition, comments on the issues to current and future challenges are mentioned.

Abstract:Hybrid perovskites, materials composed of metals and organic substances in their structure, have emerged as potential materials for the new generation of photovoltaic cells due to a unique combination of optical, excitonic and electrical properties. Inspired by sensitization techniques on TiO2 substrates (DSSC), CH3NH3PbBr3 and CH3NH3PbI3 perovskites were studied as a light-absorbing layer as well as an electron–hole pair generator. Photovoltaic cells based on per-ovskites have electron and hole transport layers (ETL and HTL, respectively), separated by an ac-tive layer composed of perovskite itself. Major advances subsequently came in the preparation methods of these devices and the development of different architectures, which resulted in an efficiency exceeding 23% in less than 10 years. Problems with stability are the main barrier to the large-scale production of hybrid perovskites. Partially or fully inorganic perovskites appear promising to circumvent the instability problem, among which the black perovskite phase CsPbI3 (α-CsPbI3) can be highlighted. In more advanced studies, a partial or total substitution of Pb by Ge, Sn, Sb, Bi, Cu or Ti is proposed to mitigate potential toxicity problems and maintain device efficiency.

Abstract:For the first time in 2009, the inorganic-organic hybrid perovskite materials were applied in liquid dye-sensitized solar cells. In 2013, the power conversion efficiency successfully reached 15%, followed by great amount of research papers bursting out. Till August 2014, the highest efficiency is certified to 17.9%, and the reported efficiency is even up to 19.3%. They quickly go beyond dye-sensitized solar cells and organic solar cells. It is expected the perovskite has its efficiency same to the single-crystal silicon cells. The "game changer" of solar cells is coming. The perovskite solar cells are cheap and easily to be made, which will benefit both science and industry. This review summarized recent development of both perovskite materials and solar cell devices, not only including new material developments of perovskite compositions, structures, and fabrication methods, but also focusing on device structures, charge transfer mechanism and stability properties of perovskite solar cells. Their perspective is also estimated.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have gained intensive attention as promising next-generation photovoltaic technologies because of their ever-increasing power conversion efficiency, inexpensive material components, and simple fabrication method of solution processing. The efficiency and long-term stability of PSCs have gradually grown in recent years, and steady progress has been made towards the large area perovskite solar modules. This review summarizes the representative works on PSCs that were globally published recently from the viewpoints of efficiency, stability, and large-scale production. Further, we emphasize the current main obstacles in high-throughput manufacturing and provide a quick overview of several prospective next- generation researches.

Abstract:Heralded as a major scientific breakthrough of 2013, organic/inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells have ushered in a new era of renewed efforts at increasing the efficiency and lowering the cost of solar energy. As a potential game changer in the mix of technologies for alternate energy, it has emerged from a modest beginning in 2012 to efficiencies being claimed at 20.1% in a span of just two years. This remarkable progress, encouraging at one end, also points to the possibility that the potential may still be far from being fully realized. With greater insight into the photophysics involved and optimization of materials and methods, this technology stands to match or even exceed the efficiencies for single crystal silicon solar cells. With thin film solution processability, applicability to flexible substrates, and being free of liquid electrolyte, this technology combines the benefits of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs), Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs), and thin film solar cells. In this review we present a brief historic perspective to this development, take a cognizance of the current state of the art, and highlight challenges and the opportunities.

Abstract:A novel organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cell has attracted great attention since June 2013, which is considered as one of the top 10 scientific breakthroughs in 2013. The solid planar structured perovskite solar cells are easy to prepare by means of chemical solution process with low fabrication cost and have already demonstrated the power conversion efficiency higher than 15%, likely surpassing 20% in the near future. The perovskite solar cells promise a bright future and would promote the development of the solar cell industry to make enormously significant impacts on economy and activities of the human society. In this paper, we review the progress in the recent development, fundamentals, and manufacturing of the perovskite solar cells, with the attention focused on the discussion of the key scientific challenges, the prospects of the future directions and the possible fabrication processes. We believe this paper would assist the researchers to embrace the opportunities of keeping up with the rapid progresses worldwide in this newly emerging solar cell field, contributing to the development of the green energy and environment in China.

Abstract:Since the first report in 2009, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (OIH-PSCs) which have achieved the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 22% have gathered interest in the scientific community. Such high PCEs achieved by low-cost solution-processed fabrication techniques are comparable to the traditional commercial solar cells. However, before practical applications, the main challenge that must be addressed is material stability. Replacing organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIH-PVK) with inorganic perovskites (I-PVKs) in PSCs has been a promising resolution and up to now, much progress has been made. In this review, a systematic review on the most recent research and progress in inorganic PSCs (I-PSCs) is presented, which is divided into three parts according to material category (lead-based I-PVK, lead-free I-PVK, and perovskite-derived materials). Moreover, current challenges and future research directions are suggested from the aspects of material stability, synthesis methods, device structure and working mechanism.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSC) have been identified as a game-changer in the world of photovoltaics. This is owing to their rapid development in performance efficiency, increasing from 3.5% to 25.8% in a decade. Further advantages of PSCs include low fabrication costs and high tunability compared to conventional silicon-based solar cells. This paper reviews existing literature to discuss the structural and fundamental features of PSCs that have resulted in significant performance gains. Key electronic and optical properties include high electron mobility (800 cm2/Vs), long diffusion wavelength (>1 μm), and high absorption coefficient (105 cm−1). Synthesis methods of PSCs are considered, with solution-based manufacturing being the most cost-effective and common industrial method. Furthermore, this review identifies the issues impeding PSCs from large-scale commercialisation and the actions needed to resolve them. The main issue is stability as PSCs are particularly vulnerable to moisture, caused by the inherently weak bonds in the perovskite structure. Scalability of manufacturing is also a big issue as the spin-coating technique used for most laboratory-scale tests is not appropriate for large-scale production. This highlights the need for a transition to manufacturing techniques that are compatible with roll-to-roll processing to achieve high throughput. Finally, this review discusses future innovations, with the development of more environmentally friendly lead-free PSCs and high-efficiency multi-junction cells. Overall, this review provides a critical evaluation of the advances, opportunities and challenges of PSCs.

Abstract:The dawn of a new era in optoelectronic technologies has emerged with the recent development of the organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskite. Its exceptional attributes, including high carrier mobility, an adjustable spectral absorption range, long diffusion lengths, and the simplicity and affordability of fabrication render it one of the most exceptional and market-competitive optoelectronic materials for applications in photovoltaics, light emitting diodes (LED), photodetectors, lasers, and more. Moreover, its versatility in device architecture and ability to achieve relatively high performance devices via various processing techniques makes perovskites a highly promising material for various practical applications. Here, we review the organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskite and delve into its recent progress and relevant applications.

Abstract:In just over a decade, the power conversion efficiency of Metal halide perovskite solar cells has increased from 3.9% to 25.5%, suggesting this technology might be ready for large‐scale exploitation in industrial applications. Photovoltaic devices based on perovskite single‐crystals are emerging as a viable alternative to polycrystalline materials. Perovskite single‐crystals indeed possess lower trap state densities, higher carrier mobilities and longer diffusion lengths, and potentially can achieve higher performance with respect to those fabricated with polycrystalline films, although their integration in a complete device needs particular attention and the use of specifically tailored growth techniques. In this review we report recent advances on single‐crystal halide perovskites. We first discuss crystalline structure and fundamental properties of three‐dimensional perovskites, including the emerging mixed‐anion cation perovskites, then we report on the most popular growth methods with a focus on techniques that enable the implementation in photovoltaic devices. We further introduce architectures and materials used to produce lateral and vertical solar cells and summarize recent improvements in device design and fabrication. Finally, we critically discuss the strategies used to solve the still open challenge on these materials regarding stability under environmental conditions and offer our view on the opportunities offered by halide perovskites.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The breakthrough discovery of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials for converting solar energy into electrical energy has revolutionized the third generation photovoltaic devices. Within less than half a decade of rigorous research and development in perovskite solar cells, the efficiency is boosted upto 22%. Aforesaid high PCE is accredited to high optical absorption properties, balanced charge transport properties, and longer diffusion lengths of carriers. Two dominant perovskite solar cell architecture has evolved; n-i-p, and p-i-n with mesoporous or planar heterojunction. In planar heterojunction configuration, perovskite light harvester is layered between hole/electron transport layers and the electrodes. The electron and hole transporting films increase charge collection efficiency and reduce recombination at interfaces. In the following review, we present a critical survey of the recent progress in perovskite absorber and charge transport materials that account for the exceptionally higher PCE of perovskite devices. Furthermore, numerous fabrication techniques and device architectures are summarized.
Recent Progress in the Solution-Based Sequential Deposition of Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Hybrid organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites have probably become the most famous and prospective class of materials for photovoltaic application in the past decade. The extremely fast increase of certified power conversion efficiencies, from 3.8 to 22.7% in less than seven years, encourages researchers around the globe and indicates the materials advantageous optoelectronic properties. The most important properties for future commercialization have turned out to be the low cost of precursor materials and the simplicity of solution processability. This article reviews the latest advancements in the solution-based sequential deposition of planar perovskite absorber layers, which show promise to be multifaceted, reproducible, and controllable. Strong research interest has recently been devoted to the optimization of the surface coverage and morphology, both of which considerably influence the photovoltaic performance. Herein, we first concentrate on the deposition of lead-containing precursors from typical polar solvents and review modifications via additive incorporation and pre-/post-treatment. Afterward, innovative methods for the conversion reaction in the usually alcoholic solvent are summarized, and the influence on the final crystal morphology is highlighted. We conclude with a short discussion about future directions and challenges.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSC) represent a novel class of optoelectronic semiconductors that have garnered significant attention from photovoltaic researchers globally. This is due to their continually improving efficiency, straightforward solution processing methods, use of lightweight and cost-effective materials, and other notable features. The advantageous properties of perovskite materials, such as superior charge transport, tunable band gap, and distinctive electronic structure, contribute to their appeal. Over the past 6 to 7 years, diverse device architectures and fabrication techniques for PSC have emerged, achieving an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.7%. This review article primarily focuses on recent advancements in PSC fabrication techniques, synthesis, device architecture, charge transport mechanisms, band gap engineering, and stability. Additionally, it provides a summary of recently reported materials used in various layers of PSC, including the perovskite layer, as well as electron and hole transport layers. Lastly, the article outlines the challenges faced in the development of PSC, offers recommendations, and suggests potential directions for future research to guide the field forward.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have rapidly emerged as a promising photovoltaic technology, with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) improving from 3% to over 26% within a decade. This progress positions PSCs as a competitive alternative to traditional silicon-based cells, offering advantages in performance, cost-effectiveness, and flexible applications. The unique ABX 3 crystal structure of perovskites enables tunable optoelectronic properties, making them ideal for a broad spectrum of solar and optoelectronic applications. The high absorption coefficient, long diffusion lengths, and high charge-carrier mobility of PSCs have accelerated their development. However, challenges such as environmental instability and toxic solvent use hinder commercialization. Current research focuses on enhancing stability through passivation, encapsulation, and eco-friendly fabrication methods using solvents like γ-valerolactone. In addition to solar cells, perovskite materials show promise in photodetectors, LEDs, and memristors, making them central to next-generation optoelectronic devices. This review highlights the potential of PSCs while addressing the technological advancements needed for their commercial viability.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of efficiency from 3.8% to 22.1% in recent years, perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) have drawn significant attention of researchers from both academia and industry. However, significant barriers remain standing in the pathway of PVSC advancement. To develop high-efficiency and stable devices as well as environmentally benign perovskites is critical, yet challenging aspects remain in PVSC research. In this review article, we focused on the recent advances in related subjects. The approaches for high-efficiency PVSCs have been introduced and then the instability issues and lead-free perovskite have been discussed. Finally, the conclusion along with brief perspectives has been provided on further advancing PVSCs towards use in efficient and stable solar-to-electricity technologies.
