SDoH contextualize factors in a community that are associated with chronic disease risk and certain health disparities. The main objective of this study was to explore the impact of SDoH on the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, and whether these factors explain disparities in these health outcomes among Latinos in Southern California.

Abstract:Social determinants of health (SDoH) play an essential role in the risk of developing diseases or medical disorders. Conducting a comprehensive retrospective analysis is necessary to better understand the development status, research hotspots, and development trends of SDoH research. The bibliometric analysis method is applied based on CiteSpace and VOS viewer to quantitatively analyze and visually review the articles published in the field of SDoH from Web of Science core databases from 2000 to 2021. We quantitatively analyzed the author, institution, and other basic information to probe the development of SDoH and then visually investigated the high-frequency keywords, burst keywords, and keyword clusters to understand better the evolution of hotspots and development directions of SDoH during the study period. Health inequality is the main keyword of the SDoH field, and disease burden is expected to maintain a hotspot in recent years. Further, research methodologies could be improved to explain how upstream SDoH influences human lived experience. Additionally, the SDoH field needs to utilize the horizons of the multidisciplinary approach to consider and discuss sustainable development issues to offer implications for health improvement policy and interventions.

Abstract:Introduction: Dietary patterns high in healthy plant foods play an important role in modulating the gut microbiome and promoting cardiometabolic health. Little is known on the diet-gut microbiome relationship in U.S. Hispanics/Latinos, who have a high burden of obesity and diabetes. Hypothesis: Three healthy dietary patterns - the alternate Mediterranean diet (aMED), the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015, and the healthful Plant-based Diet Index (hPDI), will be associated with gut microbiome composition in U.S. Hispanic/Latino adults, and healthy-diet-related species will be related to favorable cardiometabolic traits. Methods: HCHS/SOL is a multi-site community-based cohort. At baseline (2008-11), diet was assessed via two 24-hr recalls. Shotgun sequencing was performed on stool samples collected in 2014-17 (n=2,985). Analysis of Compositions of Microbiomes 2 (ANCOM2) was used to identify associations of dietary pattern scores with gut microbiome species and functions, adjusting for sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical covariates. Results: Better diet quality according to multiple healthy dietary patterns was associated with higher abundance of species from class Clostridia, including [Eubacterium] eligens , Butyrivibrio crossotus , and Lachnospiraceae bacterium TF01-11 , as well as functions related to fiber fermentation (e.g. pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase). Poorer diet quality was associated with higher abundance of Acidaminococcus intestini , as well as functions of manganese/iron transport, adhesin protein transport, and nitrate reduction. Healthy diet pattern-enriched Clostridia species were related to more favorable cardiometabolic traits such as lower triglycerides ( Figure 1 ). Conclusions: Healthy dietary patterns in this population are associated with a fiber-fermenting gut microbiome, consistent with previous studies in other racial/ethnic groups. Gut microbiota may be involved in the beneficial effect of higher diet quality on cardiometabolic disease risk.

Abstract:Public Health Reports®, Ahead of Print. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age that influence health outcomes, and structural and systemic drivers of health (SSD) are the social, cultural, political, and economic contexts that create and shape SDOH. With the integration of constructs from previous examples, we propose an SSD model that broadens the contextual effect of these driving forces or factors rooted in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's SDOH framework. Our SSD model (1) presents systems and structures as multidimensional, (2) considers 10 dimensions as discrete and intersectional, and (3) acknowledges health-related effects over time at different life stages and across generations. We also present an application of this SSD model to the housing domain and describe how SSD affect SDOH through multiple mechanisms that may lead to unequal resources, opportunities, and consequences contributing to a disproportionate burden of disease, illness, and death in the US population. Our enhanced SDOH framework offers an innovative and promising model for multidimensional, collaborative public health approaches toward achieving health equity and eliminating health disparities.

Abstract:The social dimension of sustainable diets, which addresses the impacts of food value chains on people, animals and communities, is under-represented in the food systems field. We present a definition of the social dimension of sustainable diets, clarify its boundaries and propose corresponding outcomes. Three case studies highlight the connectivity of social outcomes with the health, environment and economic dimensions of sustainable diets. The continued development of social metrics, data and methods and the implementation of integrated solutions co-developed with affected communities are needed to transform systems and structures that perpetuate unjust and inequitable food systems outcomes.

Abstract:Consideration of the definition of the social determinants of health (SDOHs) requires health care to include work, play, and worship environments because they are important to the health of patients and communities. This article attempts to discuss the issues with limited focus on these areas and the importance of using multidisciplinary health-care teams during primary care visits. The expectation from this information is to advance the ability for primary care providers to support patients and the communities they work in to effect change toward decreasing health disparities and enhancing overall health outcomes.

Abstract:Social determinants of health (SDoH) have a significant impact on health outcomes and well-being. Addressing SDoH is the key to reducing healthcare inequalities and transforming a "sick care" system into a "health promoting" system. To address the SDOH terminology gap and better embed relevant elements in advanced biomedical informatics, we propose an SDoH ontology (SDoHO), which represents fundamental SDoH factors and their relationships in a standardized and measurable way. The ontology formally models classes, relationships, and constraints based on multiple SDoH-related resources. Expert review and coverage evaluation, using clinical notes data and a national survey, showed satisfactory results. SDoHO could potentially play an essential role in providing a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the associations between SDoH and health outcomes and providing a path toward health equity across populations.

The article also addresses food as a social problem, focusing on issues such as food safety, biotechnology, and dietary disorders, and the role of public health policies in managing these concerns. Cultural influences on food and nutrition are analyzed with examples from various societies, illustrating how traditional foods, religious beliefs, and globalization shape dietary practices. Social influences on eating behavior, including family, peer, and societal norms, are explored, emphasizing their implications for nutritional interventions. The article delves into socio-economic inequalities in nutrition, discussing barriers to healthy eating faced by low-income populations and proposing strategies to address these disparities. Abstract:Nutrition behavior is influenced by a large number of factors, including social and cultural factors. This scoping review aims to summarize how social determinants of health (SDoH) influence nutrition behaviors in Indigenous populations affected by or at risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we conducted a systematic search in six databases—PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and World Health Organization Global Index Medicus—limiting results to studies published in English up to 27 October 2023. A descriptive synthesis was conducted. We identified 1490 articles, and after screening, 31 of them met our inclusion criteria. We found that nutritional behavior is impacted by various SDoH domains, including economic stability, neighborhood and built environment, education, health and healthcare, and social and community context. The shift from traditional diets to Westernized diets and from subsistence-based food gathering to reliance on store-bought and processed foods reflects changes in SDoH, affecting both nutrition behaviors and health outcomes. Although not all included studies examined every SDoH domain in our review, future research should consider all domains to gain a comprehensive understanding of how they impact nutritional behavior. This approach will better inform interventions and policies, ultimately promoting health equity in Indigenous communities.

Abstract:The consequences of experiences and exposures suffered by those living in poverty can last a lifetime and can even be passed on to the next generation. The challenges associated with poverty have been labeled the "social determinants of health" (SDoH), but this is something of a misnomer. A more appropriate label would be the "social determinants of disease." This essay is a broad overview of the processes, including allostatic load and epigenetic aging, that might contribute to prolonging the adverse effects of the social determinants of disease.
A Semantic Approach to Describe Social and Economic Characteristics That Impact Health Outcomes (Social Determinants of Health): Ontology Development Study

Abstract:Background: Social determinants of health (SDoH) have been described by the World Health Organization as the conditions in which individuals are born, live, work, and age. These conditions can be grouped into 3 interrelated levels known as macrolevel (societal), mesolevel (community), and microlevel (individual) determinants. The scope of SDoH expands beyond the biomedical level, and there remains a need to connect other areas such as economics, public policy, and social factors. Objective: Providing a computable artifact that can link health data to concepts involving the different levels of determinants may improve our understanding of the impact SDoH have on human populations. Modeling SDoH may help to reduce existing gaps in the literature through explicit links between the determinants and biological factors. This in turn can allow researchers and clinicians to make better sense of data and discover new knowledge through the use of semantic links. Methods: An experimental ontology was developed to represent knowledge of the social and economic characteristics of SDoH. Information from 27 literature sources was analyzed to gather concepts and encoded using Web Ontology Language, version 2 (OWL2) and Protégé. Four evaluators independently reviewed the ontology axioms using natural language translation. The analyses from the evaluations and selected terminologies from the Basic Formal Ontology were used to create a revised ontology with a broad spectrum of knowledge concepts ranging from the macrolevel to the microlevel determinants. Results: The literature search identified several topics of discussion for each determinant level. Publications for the macrolevel determinants centered around health policy, income inequality, welfare, and the environment. Articles relating to the mesolevel determinants discussed work, work conditions, psychosocial factors, socioeconomic position, outcomes, food, poverty, housing, and crime. Finally, sources found for the microlevel determinants examined gender, ethnicity, race, and behavior. Concepts were gathered from the literature and used to produce an ontology consisting of 383 classes, 109 object properties, and 748 logical axioms. A reasoning test revealed no inconsistent axioms. Conclusions: This ontology models heterogeneous social and economic concepts to represent aspects of SDoH. The scope of SDoH is expansive, and although the ontology is broad, it is still in its early stages. To our current understanding, this ontology represents the first attempt to concentrate on knowledge concepts that are currently not covered by existing ontologies. Future direction will include further expanding the ontology to link with other biomedical ontologies, including alignment for granular semantics.

Abstract:Diabetic patients must exert continuous self-management in areas such as diet, exercise, and medications to control blood sugar. However, such habits are greatly influenced by lifestyle; socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions; as well as individual will. In vulnerable groups, the prevalence of diabetes is higher than in non-vulnerable groups, and difficulties in diabetes management are more common. Health is impacted by age; gender; genetics; lifestyle; social and community networks; living and working conditions; and socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions. Among these various factors, five ‘social determinants of health’ highly affect the health management of diabetic patients: socioeconomic status, physical environment (housing environment, transportation), food insecurity, family and social support, and health literacy. It is important address these social determinants of health, starting with identification of individualized social needs of patients. Efforts should be made to improve quality of life through use of community resources and to further contribute to alleviating health inequality.

Abstract:Background/objective: Non-clinical aspects of life, such as social, environmental, behavioral, psychological, and economic factors, what we call the sociome, play significant roles in shaping patient health and health outcomes. This paper introduces the Sociome Data Commons (SDC), a new research platform that enables large-scale data analysis for investigating such factors. Methods: This platform focuses on "hyper-local" data, i.e., at the neighborhood or point level, a geospatial scale of data not adequately considered in existing tools and projects. We enumerate key insights gained regarding data quality standards, data governance, and organizational structure for long-term project sustainability. A pilot use case investigating sociome factors associated with asthma exacerbations in children residing on the South Side of Chicago used machine learning and six SDC datasets. Results: The pilot use case reveals one dominant spatial cluster for asthma exacerbations and important roles of housing conditions and cost, proximity to Superfund pollution sites, urban flooding, violent crime, lack of insurance, and a poverty index. Conclusion: The SDC has been purposefully designed to support and encourage extension of the platform into new data sets as well as the continued development, refinement, and adoption of standards for dataset quality, dataset inclusion, metadata annotation, and data access/governance. The asthma pilot has served as the first driver use case and demonstrates promise for future investigation into the sociome and clinical outcomes. Additional projects will be selected, in part for their ability to exercise and grow the capacity of the SDC to meet its ambitious goals.

Abstract:The evolution of research in human nutrition has allowed an unprecedented progress at identifying key components of the diet that would so vastly affect human health (Wang et al. Citation 2023 ). We can hypothesise that the majority of global chronic non-communicable diseases could be prevented with lifestyle intervention, including adequate diet quality (Venkatesan Citation 2024 ). National and international bodies exert numerous efforts to establish the best guidelines in order to identify an "optimal" dietary intake of nutrients, food groups and overall dietary patterns (Herforth et al. Citation 2019 ). There is ongoing research concerning the best dietary model to adopt for the preservation of human and planetary health (Springmann et al. Citation 2020 ). In this context, assessing human needs for nutrients and assuring their adequacy with appropriate dietary choices are of paramount importance for public health experts. While diet quality from a nutrient point of view remains the culprit for a healthy diet, there is growing interest for other aspects that may be equally important to determine healthy (or unhealthy) dietary choices and yet being largely unexplored. For instance, mechanisms explaining the psychosocial factors influencing eating behaviours may include food emotion, mental health, mood and pleasure (Walker-Clarke et al. Citation 2022 ). Perceptions and emotions related to certain foods may positively or negatively affect dietary intakes (Caso and Vecchio Citation 2022 ). These choices may be influenced by social and psychological influences: among the former, societal facilitators and social environment may play a role, while among the latter, impulsivity, attitudes and perceptions have been accounted for as potentially responsible for dietary choices.
