Abstract:Block copolymer (BCP) phase separation dynamics can be expected to differ significantly from that of the polymer blends due to the constraint of chain connectivity. BCP phase separation dynamics has been studied theoretically, but there has been little experimental evidence to confirm the BCP domain growth scaling laws put forward theoretically. Here, we investigate the dynamics of late-stage lamellar BCP domain coarsening and find that the scaling exponent for lamellar domain growth is ≈1/6 (0.17), irrespective of the annealing temperature, a value close to the scaling exponent of 0.2 predicted by theoretical studies. Furthermore, we show that the prefactors in the domain coarsening equation show Arrhenius dependence on temperature, indicating that the BCP domain growth dynamics is Arrhenius over the temperature range investigated. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the behavior of lamellar block copolymers (BCPs) in the late - stage domain coarsening dynamics. Specifically, the researchers hope to experimentally verify the theoretically predicted BCP domain growth scaling law, especially focusing on whether the growth rate of lamellar BCP domains at different annealing temperatures conforms to the theoretically predicted scaling exponent. ### Main problems 1. **Dynamics of BCP domain growth**: - The researchers attempt to experimentally verify the theoretically predicted dynamic behavior of BCP domain growth, especially the domain coarsening process at different annealing temperatures. - Theoretically, the scaling exponent of BCP domain growth is approximately 0.2, but there are relatively few experimental verifications. 2. **Temperature dependence of the domain coarsening process**: - The researchers also focus on the temperature dependence of the pre - factors in the domain coarsening process, that is, whether these pre - factors follow the Arrhenius relationship. ### Experimental methods - **Sample preparation**: Use polystyrene - polymethyl methacrylate (PS - b - PMMA) as the research object and prepare 100 - nanometer - thick films by the solvent casting method. - **Characterization techniques**: Utilize grazing - incidence small - angle X - ray scattering (GISAXS) technology to analyze the changes in BCP domain structures at different annealing times. ### Main findings 1. **Scaling exponent of domain growth**: - The experimental results show that the growth scaling exponent of lamellar BCP domains is approximately 1/6 (0.17), which is close to the theoretically predicted 0.2. - This scaling exponent remains consistent at different annealing temperatures, indicating that the dynamic behavior of domain growth is not affected by temperature. 2. **Arrhenius dependence of pre - factors**: - The pre - factors in the domain coarsening equation change with temperature in accordance with the Arrhenius relationship, that is, the pre - factors decay exponentially with temperature. - The activation energy (\(E_a\)) is approximately 27.6 kJ/mol, much lower than the activation energy (approximately 8300 kJ/mol) in the BCP grain coarsening process. ### Conclusions - This study experimentally verifies the dynamic behavior of lamellar BCP domain growth, confirms that the scaling exponent of domain growth is approximately 1/6, and finds that the pre - factors change with temperature in accordance with the Arrhenius relationship. - These results provide important experimental evidence for understanding the dynamics of BCP micro - phase separation and are helpful for further optimizing the performance and applications of BCP materials. ### Formulas - **Domain coarsening equation**: \[ \Delta d = A(T)t^n \] where \(\Delta d\) is the growth amount of the domain size, \(A(T)\) is the temperature - dependent pre - factor, \(t\) is the annealing time, and \(n\) is the scaling exponent. - **Arrhenius relationship**: \[ A(T)\sim A_0\exp\left(-\frac{E_a}{RT}\right) \] where \(A_0\) is a constant, \(E_a\) is the activation energy, \(R\) is the gas constant, and \(T\) is the absolute temperature. These findings not only verify the theoretical predictions but also provide important references for future BCP material design and applications.
