Abstract:Due to the development of industries such as mining, smelting, industrial electroplating, tanning, and mechanical manufacturing, heavy metals were discharged into water bodies seriously affecting water quality. Bamboo charcoal, as an environmentally friendly new adsorbent material, in this paper, the virgin bamboo charcoal (denoted as WBC) was modified with different concentrations of KMnO4 and NaOH to obtain KMnO4-modified bamboo charcoal (KBC) and NaOH-modified bamboo charcoal (NBC) which was used to disposed of water bodies containing Cu2+ and Zn2+. The main conclusions were as following: The adsorption of Cu2+ by WBC, KBC and NBC was significantly affected by pH value, and the optimum pH was 5.0. Differently, the acidity and alkalinity of the solution doesn't effect the adsorption of Zn2+ seriousely. Meanwhile, surface diffusion and pore diffusion jointly determine the adsorption rate of Cu2+ and Zn2+. The test result of EDS showed that Mn-O groups formed on the surface of K6 (WBC treated by 0.06 mol/L KMnO4) can promote the adsorption of Cu2+ and Zn2+ at a great degree. The O content on N6(WBC treated by 6 mol/L NaOH) surface increased by 30.95% compared with WBC. It is speculated that the increase of carbonyl group on the surface of NBC is one of the reasons for the improvement of Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorption capacity. Finally, the residual concentrations of Cu2+ and Zn2+ in wastewater are much lower than 0.5 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L, respectively. Thus it can be seen, KBC and NBC could be a promising adsorbent for heavy metals.
Magnetically Recyclable Loofah Biochar by KMnO 4 Modification for Adsorption of Cu(II) from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:Novel KMnO4-modified loofah biochar loaded with nano-Fe2O3 (FMLB) was successfully synthesized for Cu(II) adsorption. Nitrogen adsorption method, scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and other characterization measurements were used to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of FMLB and nano-Fe2O3-loaded biochar (FLB). The results show that the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) can be best fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, indicating that the surface of FMLB was composed of homogeneous adsorption, and chemical adsorption dominated the adsorption process under optimal reaction conditions. The adsorption capacity of FMLB is improved by 42.86% compared to FLB, and it remained over 75% after four cycles. The inner-sphere complexes with manganese oxide (MnO x ) and oxygen-containing functional groups, as well as electrostatic interaction, physical adsorption, and ion exchange, play important roles in Cu(II) adsorption. The saturation magnetization of FMLB was 10.41 emu/g, ensuring that it can be easily separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, magnetically recyclable biochar modified by KMnO4 is a feasible method for Cu(II) adsorption.

Enhanced fluoride removal from drinking water in wide pH range using La/Fe/Al oxides loaded rice straw biochar

Abstract:Abstract A novel and highly efficient adsorbent was prepared by loading La/Fe/Al oxides onto rice straw biochar (RSBC), which was tested for the ability to remove fluoride from drinking water. Characterized by SEM, XRD, Zeta potential and FTIR, it was found that the ternary metal oxides were successfully loaded on the surface of biochar in amorphous form, resulting in the formation of hydroxyl active adsorption sites and positive charges, which played a synergistic role in fluoride removal. Through batch adsorption tests, key factors including contact time, initial fluoride concentration, initial pH and co-existing anions effects were investigated. Results showed that the tri-metallic modified biochar (La/Fe/Al-RSBC) had excellent fluoride removal performance with an adsorption capacity of 111.11 mg/g. Solution pH had little impact on the removal of fluoride, the adsorbent retained excellent fluoride removal capacity in a wide pH range of 3.0–11.0. The co-existing anions had almost no effect on the fluoride removal by La/Fe/Al-RSBC. In addition, La/Fe/Al-RSBC could be regenerated and reused. Electrostatic adsorption and ion exchange were responsible for this adsorption behavior. These findings suggested the broad application prospect of a prepared biochar adsorbent based on rare earth and aluminum impregnation for the fluoride removal from drinking water.

Abstract:Carbon foams is a new carbon materials with a wide range of applications,which has been received a lot of interests in recent years.In this study,bamboo charcoal modified carbon foams with phenolic resin as matrix precursor have been prepared by chemical foaming method and followed by curing and carbonization processes.The influences of the percentage of bamboo charcoal,absorption time and pH value on the absorption properties of the modified carbon foams for copper ions have been investigated.The results show that the adsorption goes to the highest value when the percentage of bamboo charcoal is 7% to 10%,adsorption time is 45 min and that the pH value is 9.The relationship between the adsorption capacity and the microstructure of the carbon foams has also been discussed.The absorption properties have been improved due to its large diameter.Meanwhile,the cost of preparation has been reduced and the application scope of the materials has been expanded.
Preparation of Bamboo-Based Hierarchical Porous Carbon Modulated by FeCl3 towards Efficient Copper Adsorption

Abstract:Using bamboo powder biochar as raw material, high-quality meso/microporous controlled hierarchical porous carbon was prepared—through the catalysis of Fe3+ ions loading, in addition to a chemical activation method—and then used to adsorb copper ions in an aqueous solution. The preparation process mainly included two steps: load-alkali leaching and chemical activation. The porosity characteristics (specific surface area and mesopore ratio) were controlled by changing the K2CO3 impregnation ratio, activation temperature, and Fe3+ ions loading during the activation process. Additionally, three FBPC samples with different pore structures and characteristics were studied for copper adsorption. The results indicate that the adsorption performance of the bamboo powder biochar FBPC material was greatly affected by the meso/micropore ratio. FBPC 2.5-900-2%, impregnated at a K2CO3: biochar ratio of 2.5 and a Fe3+: biochar mass ratio of 2%, and activated at 900 °C for 2 h in N2 atmosphere, has a very high specific surface area of 1996 m2 g−1 with a 58.1% mesoporous ratio. Moreover, it exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity of 256 mg g−1 and rapid adsorption kinetics for copper ions. The experimental results show that it is feasible to control the hierarchical pore structure of bamboo biochar-derived carbons as a high-performance adsorbent to remove copper ions from water.

Functionalized layered double hydroxides composite bio-adsorbent for efficient copper(II) ion encapsulation from wastewater

Abstract:In this study, naturally abundant and inexpensive bamboo was used to make cheaper activated charcoal for efficient encapsulation of toxic copper (Cu(II)) ion from wastewater. The functionalized bamboo charcoal-Layered double hydroxides (BC-LDHs) composite bio-adsorbent was prepared using co-precipitation method. The composite bio-adsorbent was exploited to eliminate Cu(II) ion with high sensitivity and selectivity from contaminated water. The adsorption parameters including the effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and effect of initial concentration were optimized in systematic way and the adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated for potential use in real sample treatment. The physicochemical properties and morphological structure of the adsorbent were examined using X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electronic Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric Analysis to understand the Cu(II) ion adsorption mechanism. The adsorption results revealed that the BC-LDH could remove almost 100% of Cu(II) ion from aqueous solution at pH range between 3.0 and 6.0 within 30 min. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was determined to be 85.47 mg/g based on the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption equilibrium data were well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.998) and the experimental kinetic data were supported by the pseudo-second order model (R2 = 0.999). The BC-LDH could be reused without losing its adsorption performance in several cycles after successful regeneration with 0.10 M HCl. The Cu(II) ion removal mechanism was postulated with intercalated ion exchange, surface precipitation and interaction between BC-LDH and surface functionalities. Therefore, the highly functional BC-LDH composite could be a promising adsorbent for efficient Cu(II) ion removal from wastewater.

Abstract:Facile micro-emulsion methods have been developed to synthesize mesoporous Co-Al hydroxide carbonates with rodlike and hexagonal sheetlike morphologies. A series of samples with different molar ratio of cobalt/aluminum were prepared to investigate the impact of cobalt content. Employing transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectra, the morphology, structure and composition of the products were investigated. Characterized by gas-sorption measurements, the specific surface area of the calcined S-10 sample with the rodlike morphology was as high as 379 m(2)/g, which provided this material porosity properties and outstanding fluoride removal efficiency as high as 95.6%. The sorptive removal capacity of fluoride from aqueous solutions by the precursors and their corresponding annealed products was investigated in a batch mode. Adsorption of Cu~(2+) in Wastewater on Bamboo Charcoal

Abstract:The effects of bamboo charcoal size,bamboo charcoal dosage,solution pH,adsorption time and Cu~(2+) initial mass concentration on Cu~(2+) adsorption were studied.The experimental results show that:The bamboo charcoal has good adsorption effect to Cu~(2+) in wastewater,and when the bamboo charcoal size is less than 0.15 mm,the bamboo charcoal dosage is 16 g/L,the solution pH is 6.0,the Cu~(2+) initial mass concentration is 25 mg/L and the adsorption time is 1.5 h,the removal rate of Cu~(2+) is 98.3%;The Cu~(2+) adsorption on bamboo charcoal accords with Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models.The maximum adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir equation is 17.86 mg/g.
A stable Fe/Co bimetallic modified biochar for ofloxacin removal from water: adsorption behavior and mechanisms

Abstract:In this study, Fe–Co-modified biochar (FMBC) loaded with iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co) bimetals after NaOH activation was prepared by pyrolysis using forestry waste cedar bark as a raw material to study its properties and the adsorption of ofloxacin (OFX). The surface structure and chemical properties were analyzed by BET, SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS, and FTIR characterization, and the results showed that the FMBC possessed a larger specific surface area and abundant surface functional groups. FMBC conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating that the OFX adsorption process on FMBC was a monolayer adsorption process and controlled by chemisorption. The saturation adsorption capacity of FMBC was 10 times higher than that of cedar bark biochar (BC). In addition, the effects of initial pH and coexisting ions on the adsorption process were investigated, and FMBC showed good adsorption, with the best adsorption capacity at pH = 7. Multiple adsorption mechanisms, including physical and chemical interactions, were involved in the adsorption of OFX by FMBC. TG, metal leaching, different water sources, and VSM tests showed that FMBC had good stability and was easily separated from water. Finally, the reusability performance of FMBC was investigated by various methods, and after five cycles it could still reach 75.78–89.31% of the adsorption capacity before recycling. Therefore, the FMBC synthesized in this study is a promising new adsorbent.

Abstract:Water containing high concentrations of fluoride is widely distributed and seriously harmful, largely because long-term exposure to fluoride exceeding the recommended level will lead to fluorosis of teeth and bones. Therefore, it is imperative to develop cost-effective and environmentally friendly adsorbents to remove fluoride from polluted water sources. In this study, diatomite (DA), calcium bentonite (CB), bamboo charcoal (BC), and rice husk biochar (RHB) were tested as adsorbents to adsorb fluoride (F ‐ ) from water, and this process was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (FEI-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effects of pH, dosage, and the initial mass concentration of each treatment solution upon adsorption of F ‐ were determined. Kinetic and thermodynamic models were applied to reveal the mechanism of defluoridation, and an orthogonal experiment was designed to obtain the optimal combination of conditions. The results show that the surfaces of CB, BC, and RHB have an irregular pore structure and rough surface, whereas DA has a rich pore structure, clear pores, large specific surface area, and high silica content. With regard to the adsorption process for F ‐ , DA has an adsorption complex electron interaction; that of CB, BC, and RHB occur mainly via ion exchange with positive and negative charges; and CB on F ‐ relies on chemical electron bonding adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of DA can reach 32.20 mg/g. When the mass concentration of fluoride is 100 mg/L, the pH value is 6.0 and the dosage is 4.0 g/L; the adsorption rate of F ‐ by DA can reach 91.8%. Therefore, we conclude that DA soil could be used as an efficient, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly adsorbent for fluoride removal, perhaps providing an empirical basis for improving the treatment of fluorine-containing water in the future.

Abstract:Biochar-supported metallic oxides are attractive adsorbents for heavy metal cleanup, but the adsorption performance is still unsatisfactory as a result of the self-aggregation of the incorporated metallic oxides. A new hybrid nano-material was prepared through impregnating hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) nanoparticles within biochar bearing high-density charged oxygen-containing groups (e.g., carboxyl and hydroxyl groups) (ABC) derived from HNO3 treatment. The as-made adsorbent, denoted as HFO-ABC, possesses highly dispersed HFO nanoparticles with typical size lower than 20 nm, and exhibits greater sorption capacity for Cd(II) and Cu(II) than the pristine biochar-supported HFO. It also shows great sorption preference toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) in co-presence of high levels of Ca2+, Mg2+ and humic acid (HA). Such prominent performance is put down to the high-density charged functional groups on the host ABC, which not only promote the dispersion of the immobilized HFO nanoparticles but also generate the potential Donnan membrane effect, i.e., the pre-concentration and permeation of target metals prior to their preferable adsorption by nano-HFO. The predicted effective coefficients of intra-particle diffusion for Cu(II) and Cd(II) are 3.83 × 10−9 and 4.33 × 10−9 cm2/s, respectively. HFO-ABC exhibits excellent performance for fixed-bed column application, and yields 513 and 990 BV effluents for Cd(II) and Cu(II) to achieve their discharge standards, respectively. The spent HFO-ABC could be in situ regenerated using binary HCl-CaCl2 solution with desorption efficiency higher than 95%. All results manifest that increasing charged functional groups via HNO3 treatment is an effective measure for boosting sorption performance of biochar-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:In this study, impregnation combined with KOH activation with different mixing methods was used to prepare magnetic biochar. The effects of synthetic method on biochar physicochemical properties and adsorption performance were explored. The results showed that treatment of a Fe-Zn oxide with KOH activation provided excellent adsorption properties with adsorption capacity of 458.90 mg/g due to well-developed microporous structure and rich-in O-containing functional groups as well as exposed oxidizing functional groups (Fe 2 O 3 and FeOOH). Langmuir-Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models accurately fit phenol adsorption. Neutral conditions (pH = 6) and lower ionic strengths were beneficial to phenol removal. Additionally, the predominant adsorption processes were physisorption and chemisorption. Correlation analyses and characterization data confirmed that pore filling, π-π interactions and surface complexation were the dominant driving forces for phenol adsorption. This research provides an environmentally friendly method for utilizing agricultural wastes for the removal of a variety of pollutions from aquatic environment.

Abstract:The use of biomass and waste to produce adsorbent reduces the cost of water treatment. The bio-char of Sargassum oligocystum (BCSO) was modified with MnFe2O4 magnetic particles and La-metal organic framework (MOF) to generate an efficient adsorbent (BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF) for fluoride ions (F-) removal from aqueous solutions. The performance of BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF was compared with BCSO/MnFe2O4 and BCSO. The characteristics of the adsorbents were investigated using various techniques, which revealed that the magnetic composites were well-synthesized and exhibited superparamagnetic properties. The maximum adsorption efficiencies (BCSO: 97.84%, BCSO/MnFe2O4: 97.85%, and BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF: 99.36%) were achieved under specific conditions of pH 4, F- concentration of 10 mg/L, and adsorbent dosage of 3, 1.5, and 1 g/L for BCSO, BCSO/MnFe2O4, and BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF, respectively. The results demonstrated that the experimental data adheres to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy were determined to be negative; thus, the F- adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous in the range of 25-50 °C. The equilibrium data of the process exhibited conformity with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of F- ions were determined as 10.267 mg/g for BCSO, 14.903 mg/g for the BCSO/MnFe2O4, and 31.948 mg/g for BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF. The KF and AT values for the F- adsorption were obtained at 21.03 mg/g (L/mg)1/n and 100 × 10+9 L/g, indicating the pronounced affinity of the BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF towards F- than other samples. The significant potential of the BCSO/MnFe2O4@La-MOF magnetic composite for F- removal from industrial wastewater, makes it suitable for repeated utilization in the adsorption process.

Abstract:In this study, a promising KOH activated biochar/MnAl-layered double hydroxides (K-BC-LDHs) composite was synthesized using the in-situ chemical co-precipitation method. The results showed that the LDH particles were successfully distributed across the activated biochar during the modification process. More functional groups (Mn − O, Mn − O − Mn) and crystalline minerals (Mn4Al2(OH)12CO3·3H2O) were created and appeared on the surface of the composite. The LDHs modification process decreased the surface area, but increased the pore volume of the activated biochars. In addition, a mesoporous structure was formed, predominately due to the introduction of LDHs particles. The adsorption capacity for TC by K-BC-LDHs reached 1477.67 mg·g−1 and this increase was attributed to the combined actions of pore filling, complexation, and ion exchange, followed by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and π-π interactions. The pseudo-second-order kinetics, intra-particle diffusion kinetics, and Langmuir isotherm models well described the adsorption behavior of TC by K-BC-LDHs. Furthermore, TC adsorption by K-BC-LDHs was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The K-BC-LDHs composite exhibited strong adsorption toward TC over a wide pH range (3–9) and there was a certain resistance to coexisting ionic interference. Additionally, the K-BC-LDHs composite showed high adsorption performance toward other pollutants and can potentially be recycled.

Abstract:Returning carbon materials from biomass to soil is a potential technology to retard organic contaminants or dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil by adsorption, as well as to store carbon in soil for carbon sequestration. However, DOM was widely reported to inhibit adsorption of organic contaminants on carbon materials by competition and by enhancing contaminants' solubility. In this study, a KOH activated carbon material (KAC), pyrolyzed from bamboo chips, with high surface area (3108 m2/g), micropores volumes (0.964 cm3/g), mesopores volumes (1.284 cm3/g), was observed that it can adsorb fulvic acid (FA) and organic contaminants (e.g., nitrobenzene, phenols, and anilines) simultaneously with weak competition and high adsorption capacity. With 50 mg TOC/L FA, for example, the average competition suppressing rate (ΔKf/Kf-m) of organic contaminants on KAC was lower than 5%, the adsorption for organic contaminants and FA were higher than 1100 mg/g and 90 mg TOC/g, respectively. The weak competition on KAC could be attributed to the low micropore blockage (<35%) and the weak adsorption sites competition on mesopores of KAC, as well as the minimal solubility enhancement of organic contaminants by FA because most FA is adsorbed on KAC but is not dissolved in the solution. In addition, adsorption of organic contaminants with high hydrogen-bonding donor ability (αm) and adsorption affinity was less suppressed by FA because of the heterogeneous nature of hydrophilic sites on KAC's surface. Therefore, KAC could be a potential carbon material to be produced to implement to soil for carbon storage and simultaneous retarding organic contaminants and DOM.

Abstract:In this study, biochar from palm oil shell waste was applied as supporting material for the immobilized iron and copper oxide to fabricate the magnetic adsorbent of Fe3O4-CuO/biochar. The characterization showed that metallic oxide Fe3O4 and CuO are dispersed on the surface of biochar with high accessibility. BET surface area is 263 m2 g-1 relating to a predominantly microporous structure. FTIR spectra showed that the bands at 615.27 and 590.15 cm-1 are assigned to Cu-O-C and Fe-O-C stretching vibration, respectively. The average crystallized size for Fe3O4-CuO/biochar is 25 nm related to nanoparticle size. The efficiency of the adsorbent was observed from the percentage removal of inorganic anions in an aqueous solution. The highest efficiency of the adsorption process is found in the removal of phosphate at different pH solutions and contact times. The adsorption isotherms are matched for Langmuir and Freundlich models except for the fluoride. The kinetic model shows that pseudo-second-order is more favorable for the removal of inorganic anions than pseudo-first-order. This result indicated that Fe3O4-CuO/biochar is a promising adsorbent and will be effectively used for the removal of anions from an aqueous solution.

Abstract:The current investigation is devoted to synthesize a sustainable and effective nanobiosorbent by simple combination of cobalt-iron layered double hydroxide with avocado kernel seeds biochar and carboxymethyl cellulose to form a novel multifunctionalized Co/Fe-LDHs@AKS biochar@CMC material for adsorptive capture of fluoride under optimized conditions. The EDX analysis referred to 42.7 %(C) 33.4 %(O), 14.3 %(Co) 5.3 %(Fe) 2.6 %(Na) 1.2 %(Cl) and 0.52 %(Mn). The highest adsorptive capture of fluoride ion by Co/Fe-LDH@AKS biochar@CMC) nanobiosorbent were at pH ≤ 2.0 and pH 7.0 due to ion-pair interaction and anion exchange mechanisms. The fluoride removal achieved 90.9–100.0 % upon using 100 mg of Co/Fe-LDH@AKS biochar@CMC. The modeled data by four linear and non-linear expressions confirmed the highest average relative error (ARE) by the non-linear Jovanovich (ARE = 4.66) and linear Jovanovich (ARE = 12.69). The kinetic study ascertained that the adsorptive capturing reaction of fluoride ion was best fitted to both linear and nonlinear pseudo 2nd order.

Abstract:Single-step potassium hydroxide synthesized activated carbon was prepared from Schima wallichii biomass by optimizing process parameters at different carbonization temperature (500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C and 800 °C) and biomass to KOH impregnation ratio (1: 0, 1: 1, 1: 2 and 1: 3). The optimum condition for obtaining the best activation carbon was found to be at 600 °C and 1: 2 impregnation ratio with BET surface area, total pore volume, and pHzpc of 1,005.71m2g−1, 0.491 cm3g−1 and 6.11, respectively. SEM and XRD analysis revealed the ordering of the graphitic layer with more pores in the carbon matrix at optimized conditions. Batch adsorption experiments were run for fluoride adsorption and fitted, of which Langmuir isotherm model seems to be the best-fitted model with maximum adsorption capacity of 2.524mgg−1. Adsorption kinetics was elucidated best with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Theoretical calculations indicate that the adsorption of fluoride is favorable on edge site of both zig-zag and arm chair carbon models with chemisorption type of interaction. Abstract:A novel α-FeOOH modified wheat straw biochar (α-FeOOH@BC) was developed and the findings of the current study showed that α-FeOOH@BC is an efficient material for the simultaneous removal of cations (Cd(II)) and anions (As(III)) from aqueous solutions. The SEM, FTIR, and XRD analysis proved that α-FeOOH@BC was covered by α-FeOOH. In the single adsorption system, the maximum adsorption capacities of α-FeOOH@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) were 62.9 and 78.3 mg/g, respectively. In the dual adsorption system, the maximum adsorption capacities of α-FeOOH@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) dropped to 39.3 and 67.2 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and As(III) by α-FeOOH@BC were much higher by BC and α-FeOOH both in single and dual adsorbate system. The adsorption results were well fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The Cd(II) and As(III) co-adsorption on α-FeOOH@BC had a competitive effect, and the dominant adsorption mechanisms were co-precipitation and ion exchange. Our study showed that α-FeOOH@BC could be an effective remediation material for Cd(II) and As(III) co-adsorption from aqueous environment.
Enhanced Removal of Heavy Metals from Water by Hydrous Ferric Oxide-Modified Biochar

Abstract:Biochar has become an attractive adsorbent for heavy metal removal, but its application potential is very limited because of the relatively low adsorption capacity and poor selectivity. In the present study, we decorated the biochar (BC) by impregnating hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) within the pore of biochar and consequently obtained a new hybrid adsorbent denoted as HFO-BC. The results show HFO-BC exhibited excellent performance to two representative heavy metals, i.e., Cd(II) and Cu(II), with maximal experimental sorption capacities of 29.9 mg/g for Cd(II) and 34.1 mg/g for Cu(II). HFO-BC showed satisfactory anti-interference ability for Cd(II) and Cu(II) removal in the presence of high levels of Ca(II) and Mg(II) owing to the specific inner-sphere complexation between the immobilized HFO and Cd(II) and Cu(II), which was probed by XPS analysis. Cd(II) and Cu(II) removal onto HFO-BC experienced two distinct stages prior to be adsorbed, i.e., migration from solution to the outside surface of adsorbent and pore diffusion and approached equilibrium within 100 min. In the laboratory-scale small column adsorption experiment, HFO-BC can generate ∼129 and 300 BV effluents for Cd(II) and Cu(II), equivalent to 774- and 1854-fold of its own weight, to meet their treatment standards. Moreover, the exhausted HFO-BC can be effectively regenerated using HCl–CaCl2 binary solution with a desorption rate more than 95%. All results validate that impregnating HFO inside the pores of BC is a promising approach to promote the practical applicability of BC for removing heavy metals from the polluted water.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
