Abstract:As is well known that the distribution of the scattered radiation generated by an anisotropic scatterer usually lacks rotational symmetry about the direction of incidence due to the spatial anisotropy of the scatterer itself. Here we show that the rotationally symmetric distribution of the far-zone scattered momentum flow may be realized provided that the structural parameters of both the medium and the source are chosen suitably, when a polychromatic electromagnetic plane wave is scattered by an anisotropic Gaussian Schell-model medium. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for producing such a symmetric distribution, and further elucidated the relationship between the spectral degree of polarization of the incident source and the rotationally symmetric momentum flow of the scattered field in the far zone. It is found that the realization of the rotationally symmetric scattered momentum flow is independent of the spectral degree of polarization of the source, i.e., the rotationally symmetric distribution of the far-zone scattered momentum flow is always realizable regardless of whether the incident source is fully polarized, partially polarized or completely unpolarized. Our results may find useful application in optical micromanipulation, especially when the optical force used to manipulate particles requires to be rotationally symmetric.

Abstract:It is reported that the rotationally symmetric distributions of the spectral density and the spectral degree of coherence of the scattered field in the far zone can be produced by appropriate choices of the effective radius and the correlation length of the scatterer, when a polychromatic plane light wave is incident upon a Gaussian-correlated, quasi-homogeneous, anisotropic medium. The necessary and sufficient conditions are presented. Our results are illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract:The behavior of polarization and spin density of polarized light waves propagating inside an anisotropic medium is considered.Differing from the light in an isotropic medium,the polarization states and helicity eigenstates of the light waves will evolve in the anisotropic medium.The evolutional spin densities of both the circularly and the elliptically polarized light waves have been calculated,and the effects relevant to the polarization state evolution have been analyzed.An optical analog of Einstein-de Haas experimental scenario has been suggested in order to test the angular momentum transfer between light waves and anisotropic media.Such evolutional states of light would find potential applications in the field of quantum information.

Abstract:Although there have been many approaches to inverse problem in the classic theory of potential scattering, they are implicitly confined to the analysis of the scattered electric field, and thus the magnetic counterpart of the scattered wave is ignored, which limits the further application of those approaches to some extent. Here, we propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, technique for an inverse problem within the framework of electromagnetic scattering. This technique aims at reconstructing the correlation function of the scattering potential of a random medium through measuring the electromagnetic momentum flow of the scattered field in the far zone. As illustrative examples, we use the technique to determine the correlation functions of the scattering potentials of homogeneous, isotropic, and Gaussian-correlated spheres. Our new inversion approach works both microscopically and macroscopically.
Optical momentum distributions in monochromatic, isotropic random vector fields

Abstract:We investigate the decomposition of the electromagnetic Poynting momentum density in three-dimensional random monochromatic fields into orbital and spin parts, using analytical and numerical methods. In sharp contrast with the paraxial case, the orbital and spin momenta in isotropic random fields are found to be identically distributed in magnitude, increasing the discrepancy between the Poynting and orbital pictures of energy flow. Spatial correlation functions reveal differences in the generic organization of different optical momenta in complex natural light fields, with the orbital current typically forming broad channels of unidirectional flow, and the spin current manifesting larger vorticity and changing direction over subwavelength distances. These results are extended to random fields with pure helicity, in relation to the inclusion of electric-magnetic democracy in the definition of optical momenta.

Abstract:Within the accuracy of the first-order Born approximation, the far-zone behaviors of light waves on scattering from a particulate medium with two different types of particles, i.e., deterministic particles and random particles, have been discussed. It is shown that both the location of the deterministic particles and the distribution of the random particles in the system play roles in the far-zone scattered spectral density. It is also shown that the distribution of the spectral degree of coherence of the scattered field oscillates with the increase of the scattering angle, and the amplitude of the oscillation is closely related to the location of the deterministic particles and the distribution of the random particles.

Abstract:A generalized random medium is introduced of which the effective radius and the correlation length are assumed to depend on the wavelength of the incident light. The generalized Stokes parameters of a random electromagnetic beam are employed to characterize the statistical properties of the far-zone scattered field generated by the introduced random medium. It is shown that the dependence of the effective radius and the correlation length of a medium on the wavelength can affect the behaviors of the intensity, coherence and polarization of the scattered field. Besides, the distributions of the scattered field are found to have many differences between the situations of medium-led modulation and beam-led modulation. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Studies into scatterings of photonic structures have been so far overwhelmingly focused on their dependencies on the spatial and spectral morphologies of the incident waves. In contrast, the evolution of scattering properties through another parameter space of incident directions (momentum space) has attracted comparably little attention, though of profound importance for various scattering-related applications. Here we investigate, from the perspective of quasi-normal modes (QNMs), the momentum-space scattering extremizations with respect to varying incident directions of plane waves. It is revealed that for effective single-QNM excitations, scatterings are maximized exactly along those directions where the QNM radiation reaches its maximum, with matched incident and radiation polarizations. For an arbitrary direction, when the incident polarization is tuned to be orthogonal to that of the mode radiation, the QNM cannot be excited and thus the scatterer becomes invisible with null scatterings. The principles we have revealed are protected by fundamental laws of reciprocity and energy conservation (optical theorem), which can be further expanded and applied for other branches of wave physics.

Abstract:We present a theoretic analysis on (azimuthal) spin momentum-dependent orbital motion experienced by particles in a circularly-polarized annular focused field. Unlike vortex phase-relevant (azimuthal) orbital momentum flow whose direction is specified by the sign of topological charge, the direction of (azimuthal) spin momentum flow is determined by the product of the field’s polarization ellipticity and radial derivative of field intensity. For an annular focused field with a definite polarization ellipticity, the intensity’s radial derivative has opposite signs on two sides of the central ring (intensity maximum), causing the spin momentum flow to reverse its direction when crossing the central ring. When placed in such a spin momentum flow, a probe particle is expected to response to this flow configuration by changing the direction of orbital motion as it traversing from one side to the other. The reversal of the particle’s orbital motion is a clear sign that spin momentum flow can affect particles’ orbital motion alone even without orbital momentum flow. More interestingly, for dielectric particles the spin momentum-dependent orbital motion tends to be ‘negative’, i.e., in the opposite direction of the spin momentum flow. This arises mainly because of spin–orbit interaction during the scattering process. For the purpose of experimental observation, we suggest the introduction of an auxiliary radially-polarized illumination to adjust the particle’s radial equilibrium position, for the radial gradient force of the circularly-polarized annular focused field tends to constrain the particle at the ring of intensity maximum.

Abstract:We investigate the scattering of a polychromatic plane light wave incident upon an anisotropic particle. It is different from light wave scattered by an isotropic particle that the frequency shifts of spectral lines will be induced by the rotation of the anisotropic particle. The analytical expression for the spectrum of the scattered field is derived and numerical examples are also illustrated. We suggest an application that the angular speed of rotation of the anisotropic scatterer can be scaled by measurement of the spectrum of the scattered field.

Abstract:The far-zone spectral isotropy of an electromagnetic light wave on scattering has been discussed. It is shown that a sufficient condition for the far-zone spectral isotropy of an electromagnetic light wave on scattering can be expressed by the following two requirements: the two-point correlation function of the dielectric susceptibility of the scattering medium obeys the so-called scaling law, and the normalized spectrum of the incident light wave has the same distribution along the two perpendicular directions.

Abstract:A field expansion is described for the solution of three-dimensional electromagnetic problems in material regions characterized by the most general rotationally symmetric anisotropy. The analysis (in spherical coordinates) reveals that the angular dependence is dictated by spherical harmonics, whereas the radial functions satisfy a set of coupled second-order ordinary differential equations. Due to birefringence, four sets of radial functions (each set representing mode coupling), which are described in detail, are obtained. The expansion is applied to the problem of scattering by an anisotropic sphere, where the numerical calculations confirm the existence of integrable field singularities at the origin of coordinates.<>

Abstract:Based on the invariable displacement current of anisotropic media, a theoretical model for electromagnetic reconstructing anisotropic media and a basic method for selecting electromagnetic field are proposed. Taking the gypsum crystal as an example, the analytical solution of bi-axial medium scattering is presented by using the spherical vector wave function of electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic wave scattering of the anisotropic medium spheres are simulated in radiation of electromagnetic waves of different frequency. The electromagnetic analysis of the simulation results shows that the electromagnetic mechanism is consistent with the results of relevant literature. When the anisotropic medium degenerates to the isotropic medium, the results obtained by the model are completely consistent with those obtained by Mie theory.

Abstract:The cross-spectral density function of the scattered field that is produced by scattering of a coherent plane light wave incident on a collection of different types of anisotropic particles is derived. We show the phenomena of interference of the fields scattered by each of the particles in the system. Numerical results indicate that the information about the shape, the distance, and the relative orientation of the particles may be obtained from far-zone measurements of the scattered field. Abstract:The scattering coefficients of spheres with dielectric anisotropy are calculated analytically in this paper using the perturbation method. It is found that the different modes of vector spherical harmonics and polarizations are coupled together in the scattering coefficients (c-matrix) in contrast to the isotropic case where all modes are decoupled from each other. The generalized c-matrix is then incorporated into our codes for a vector wave multiple scattering program; the preliminary results on face centred cubic structure show that dielectric anisotropy reduces the symmetry of the scattering c-matrix and removes the degeneracy in photonic band structures composed of isotropic dielectric spheres.
Electromagnetic scattering by gyrotropic semiconductor spheres when considering spatial dispersion

Abstract:A new solution is presented to analyze the electromagnetic response of an anisotropic sphere when both the spatial dispersion and gyrotropy are simultaneously accounted for. By employing the Mie theory, the electromagnetic fields that can be decomposed into source-free and curl-free vector spherical harmonics are derived analytically by applying appropriate boundary conditions, namely, the continuity of the tangential components of electric fields and magnetic fields, respectively, together with the continuity of the normal components of the polarization phasor current density. Moreover, all expressions involving gyrotropic tensors are calculated in the corresponding principle coordinates, yielding analytical expressions. The derived solutions are capable of dealing with incident electromagnetic waves at an arbitrary incident angle and for arbitrary polarizations. Numerical validations are performed by comparing our results with those obtained for simplified models and also with numerical solutions, as well as with the results obtained from other existing approaches. The impact of the temperature and the dispersion effects on the modified circular dichroism has been investigated. It is demonstrated that the interplay of spatial dispersion and gyrotropy can bring narrower relative frequency shifts between the magneto-plasmonic resonances of the left-circularly-polarized and the right-circularly-polarized wave excitations, along with a blue-shift of the resonance and the reduced magnitude of the spectrum. The proposed method shows its capability and flexibility to analyze the nonlocal response of gyrotropic plasmonic semiconductors under an external static magnetic field, which enables us to rapidly validate nonlocal magneto-plasmonic applications.

Abstract:Based on full-wave electromagnetic theory, we derive the zero-forward and zero-backward scattering conditions for radially anisotropic spheres within the quasi-static limit. We find that the near-field intensity can be tuned dramatically through the adjustment of the radial anisotropy, while the far-field light scattering diagrams are similar under the zero-forward or zero-backward scattering conditions. Generalized "Brewster's angle" for anisotropic spheres is also derived, at which the scattering light is totally polarized. In addition, the high-quality polarized scattering wave and the tunable polarization conversion can be achieved for the radially anisotropic spheres.

Abstract:By application of the theory of first-order Born approximation, analytical expressions of the cross spectral density matrix of a newly proposed electromagnetic random source of circular frames scattered upon a deterministic medium in the far zone are derived. In terms of the analytical formulas obtained, the scattered spectral properties of both single circular frame and superposed circular frames are numerically investigated. Results show that the scattered spectral properties of the targeted optical source in the far zone would be significantly influenced by the effective radius sigma(R) of the scattering medium and the observation azimuth phi, in addition to the parameters of the incident source, such as the index M, the polarization states, and the correlation widths. It is pointed out here that this is the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that the influence of azimuth f on scattered spectral properties has been analyzed, and some meaningful and interesting results have been obtained in this paper.
