Abstract:Cyclohexanone diethyl acetal is widely used as pharmaceutical intermediates, and it may be pyrolyzed to give 1-ethoxy cyclohexene which could be used in synthesizing both polymer material and pharmaceutical intermediates. Cyclohexanone diethyl acetal was prepared from cyclohexanone with anhydrous ethanol as reactant, ammonium chloride as catalyst, triethyl orthoformate as water scavenger. The proposed method, which is preferable for green process, has many advantages such as the catalyst used is cheap and easily obtained, the post treatment of the process is convenient, the process has few industrial waste and high yield, etc. The suitable technical conditions were investigated in detail, which include the effects of catalyst, reaction time and reactants mole ratio on yield. The results indicate that 91.8% yield could be obtained with the following optimal reaction conditions: cyclohexanone weight 29.4 g (0.3 mol), the mole ratio of cyclohexanone and triethyl orthoformate 1:1.2, the mole ratio of cyclohexanone and anhydrous ethanol 1: 3, the reaction time 90 minutes, the amount of catalyst 0.006 mole, and reaction with reflux. The purity and structure of the product was examined by GC GC-MS and NMR.

Abstract:S)-(+)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid is the key intermediate of Cilastatin (an excellent inhibitor of dehydropeptidase-I). Using 2-methylbutenoic acid as raw material, 2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid was achieved via esterification, cyclopropanantion and hydrolysis, the yield is 44.1%. Specially, using zinc powder/copper (I) chloride-acetyl chloride as catalysts, the cyclopropanation proceedes easily with dibromomethane. Then 2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid is converted to acid chloride and reacted with L-carnitine oxalate (the chiral reagent for resolution). After fractional crystallization and hydrolysis, (S)-(+)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid was prepared with 16.7% yield. Thus a new synthesis route of 2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid was designed and its chiral resolution procedure was improved, this new route and improved procedure are clean, convenient to operate and apt for industrialization with lower cost.

Abstract:Polymer-coated particles were used to develop a novel catalyst technology for the production of broad/bimodal polyethylene in a single reactor. The methods for broad/bimodal polyethylene by catalyst technology, such as hybrid catalyst, composite support, and diffusion control, were combined together in this catalyst technology. An improved phase inversion method was used to fabricate poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (PSA) coated silica particles (SiO2/PSA). Core shell structure was obviously observed in the resulting SiO2/PSA. SiO2/PSA showed a significant barrier effect to the diffusion of 1-hexene and hexane but but no barrier effect to the diffusion of ethylene. This means the PSA layer has a selective barrier effect to the diffusion of small molecules. PSA-coated silica particles were used to support (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2/TiCl4, TiCl3/TiCl4, and Cp2ZrCl2/Fe based hybrid catalysts. The ethylene polymerization results indicated that the two different active sites can perform independently, and broad/bimodal polyethylene was obtained by all hybrid catalysts. The polydispersity index of the resulting polyethylene was as high as 18.13, even 44.5. The style of the activity profile was determined by whether the active sites in the core needed a cocatalyst or not.
Polystyrene-Based Hierarchically Macro–Mesoporous Solid Acid: A Robust and Highly Efficient Catalyst for Indirect Hydration of Cyclohexene to Cyclohexanol by a One-Pot Method under Mild Conditions

Abstract:As a promising synthesis route, indirect hydration of cyclohexene into cyclohexanol by heterogeneous catalysts shows high conversion than that in direct hydration; however, increasing the yield of cyclohexanol from cyclohexene is still a significant challenge. Notably, fabricating a high-performance catalyst is an effective method to improve the yield of the target product. Consequently, a kind of polystyrene-based hierarchically macro–mesoporous solid acid (HP CLPS-SO3H) was successfully prepared by the combination of a colloidal crystal template method with Friedel–Crafts (F–C) cross-linking. Compared with that of other catalysts (3DOM CLPS-SO3H, Amberlyst-15, and HZSM-5) with single-sized pore distributions, HP CLPS-SO3H shows remarkable catalytic performance under mild conditions, in which 90.2% cyclohexanol yield from cyclohexene was obtained. Even after 10 times reuse of the HP solid acid, 80.3% cyclohexanol yield was retained. Moreover, the original morphology was well preserved and the acid sites almost hardly reduced. The as-prepared HP CLPS-SO3H shows promising prospects in the field of cyclohexanol production.

Abstract:The catalytic synthesis of cyclohexene by dehydration of cyclohexanol using NaHSO_4·H_2O, SnCl_4·5H_2O, p-tolenesulfonic acid, aluminosilicate,solid superacid, modified bentonite and zeolites as catalysts were introduced. It showed that p-tolenesulfonic acid, aluminosilicate, solid superacid, modified bentonite were excellent catalysts for synthesis of cyclohexene with higher yields and had certain application prospect.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde with sulfuric acid as catalyst. The novel catalyst owns the strong acidity as much as 4.0 mmol/g, while Nafion and Amberlyst-15 only has the acidity of about 0.8 mmol/g. Furthermore, the catalyst possesses the advantages of the high thermal stability (200 °C) and low cost for the simple synthetic procedure. The catalytic activities of the novel catalyst were taken through esterification of acetic acid and ethanol and acetalization of benzolaldehyde and 1,2-ethandiol. The results showed that the novel catalyst showed much higher activities than the Amberlyst-15 and owned even the comparative activity to sulfuric acid, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the replacement of the traditional homogeneous catalyst for the green process.

Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:In this study, a novel dual Brønsted acidic-basic nano-scale porous organic polymer catalyst, PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H, was synthesized through various steps: preparation of a 3D network of polycalix, modification with (3-chloropropyl)-trimethoxysilane, then functionalization of polymer with piperazine and n-butyl sulfonic acid under the provided conditions. The catalyst characterization was performed by FT-IR, TGA, EDS, elemental mapping, PXRD, TEM, and FE-SEM analyses, confirming high chemical stability, activity, recoverability, and excellent covalent anchoring of functional groups. So, the designed catalyst was utilized for preparing spiro-acenaphthylene and amino-spiroindene heterocycles, providing good performance with a high yield of the corresponding products. Accordingly, this catalyst can be used in different organic transformations. Necessary experiments were conducted for the recyclability test of the polymeric catalyst, and the results showed the PC4RA@SiPr-Pip-BuSO3H catalyst can be reused 10 times without any decrease in its activity or quality with excellent stability. The structure of resultant spiro heterocycles was confirmed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FT-IR.

Abstract:Some heterogeneous catalysts, cupric oxide supported on different supports, were prepared and employed to catalyze the cyclopropanation of styrene and 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene with ethyl diazoacetate (EDA). The catalytic performance for cyclopropanation strongly depends on the nature of the support. A novel catalyst, CuO/TiO2-Al2O3, in which Al2O3 is modified with a monolayer TiO2, is found to be most active and selective for the cyclopropanation reaction. The yields of 93 and 94% cyclopropanes are obtained for styrene and 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene at 40°C as the substrates, respectively. The activity and selectivity in cyclopropanes are optimized with a monolayer dispersion of cupric oxide on the corresponding supports.

Abstract:Pd-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation is an atom-efficient and green chemistry compliant protocol for ester synthesis. However, for such noble metal containing homogeneous catalytic systems, the circumvention of thermal stress deactivation of subtly designed ligands during the separation process still lacks rational countermeasures, restricting their widespread application. In this work, the coupling of efficient homogeneous catalysis and spontaneous heterogeneous separation of alkoxycarbonylation was accomplished with a rationally designed natural metabolite L-carnitine based acidic deep eutectic solvent (DES) as an acid co-catalyst. Mild and versatile alkoxycarbonylation between ethylene and long-chain aliphatic alcohols employing DES sustained exceptionally high yield (>99%) without any apparent depression in activity after long-term operation, enabling over four times the catalyst lifespan of conventional homogeneous catalysts. Catalyst recycling at the reaction temperature was implemented by the formed DES, marking it an essential milestone in improving the operational efficiency of alkoxycarbonylation. The mechanism of DES formation through synergistic interactions of proton transfer along with hydrogen bonding formation and catalyst recycling induced by ligand protonation was proposed after the molecular insight was elucidated using DFT calculation.

Abstract:A series ofα,α'-bis(substituted benzylidene)cycloalkanones were synthesized by condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes with cyclohexanone ketal or cyclopentanone ketal using strong-acid cation exchange resin Amberlyst 15 as catalyst in ethanol media. The reactions were completed during 2~6 h with 80%~92%yields. The structure of the products was characterized by IR, 1HNMR, MS and the melting point. The products were convenient to work up. This process is simple, efficient, environmentally benign and without any self-condensation.

Abstract:Aroma compound cyclohexanone ethylene ketal was synthesized from cyclohexanone and glycol as starting material with S2O82-/SnO2-SiO2 solid super-acid as catalyst.The catalyst was prepared by precipitation-impregnation method.Factors that affect product yield were investigated.Orthogonal designed experiment was used to optimize reaction conditions.Experimental results showed that S2O82-/SnO2-SiO2 solid super-acid was an excellent catalyst.With conditions of n(glycol)∶n(cyclohexanone)=1.6∶1.0(0.32 mol∶0.2 mol);catalyst dosage of 1.0%(w)of the total reactants;8.0 mL of cyclohexane as water-stripping agent and reaction time 1.5 h;the yield of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal could achieve 97.2%.Stabltity and repeatability of the S2O82-/SnO2-SiO2 catalyst were examined.The yield of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal kept at 90.1% after being re-used for six times.The product was characterized by means of FTIR and GC-MS.Purity of the product achieves higher than 99%.

Abstract:A series of modified chloromethyl polystyrene resins loaded with peroxo phosphotungstic acid catalysts were synthesized for the selective oxidation of cyclohexene. The surface of resin was enriched with high concentration quaternary ammonium salt, and grafted with a large amount of peroxo PW-anion through ion exchange. The novel resin catalyst showed excellent cyclohexene conversion and epoxide selectivity using 30% H2O2 as oxidant at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the resin catalyst exhibited excellent recycling stability, which can be reused by a simple filtration and the peroxo phosphotungstic acid did not leach into the solvent after reaction.

Abstract:An environmentally friendly polymer catalyst (PAS) was synthesized via inverse emulsion polymerization using acrylic acid (AA) and 1-vinyl imidazole (VI) as monomers. The excellent catalytic activity of PAS was attributed to the synergistic effects of the carboxyl groups (-COOH) as hydrogen bond donors and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHCs) as electron donor, as well as the swelling properties of the polymer, which can enrich the substrate into the polymer network, increasing the contact between the substrate and active sites. Characterization results from thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) showed that the excessive imidazole addition disrupted the polymer's chain-like structure, significantly reducing its swelling properties. And, the catalytic performance is influenced by both the amount of imidazole in PAS and the swelling properties of the polymer. Finally, the reaction mechanism of the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction catalyzed by PAS was proposed and validated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:A stable and highly active ordered mesoporous polymer-based acid catalyst has been prepared via a simple surfactant templating approach and oxidation treatment. The composition and nanostructure are characterized by XRD, NMR, XPS, TEM, nitrogen sorption, elemental and chemical analysis. The sulfonic acid groups have been anchored within the well-arranged channels of the polymer-based matrix. Even with a high –SO3H group loading (up to about 27.4 wt%) on the mesoporous polymer-based material, the ordered mesostructure and high surface area (400 m2 g−1) can be retained and the functional moieties are highly chemically accessible. With the large number of acid sites (0.93–2.38 H+ mmol g−1 determined by acid–base titration) and the hydrophobic character, the mesoporous polymer-based solid exhibits unique catalytic performance in acid-catalyzed reactions such as condensation and acetalization, not only high activity (per site yield of bisphenol-A is over 45 in the condensation of phenol and acetone) but also excellent stability. Loss in acidic loading and activity is negligible even after the catalyst is reused 20 times in the acetalization of butanediol and aldehyde. The stability is most likely attributed to the hydrophobic nature of the mesoporous polymer-based solids, which favors the diffusion of water and thereby inhibits the poisoning of acidic sites caused by water generating in the reaction. Moreover, with large mesopores, the diffusion of reactants and products can be promoted and hence the catalytic activity can be further increased.
Design and Synthesis of Mesoporous Polymer-Based Solid Acid Catalysts with Excellent Hydrophobicity and Extraordinary Catalytic Activity

Abstract:Novel excellent hydrophobic- mesoporous- polymer-based solid acid catalysts have been successfully synthesized by copolymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) with sodium p-styrene sulfonate (H-PDVB-x-SO3H's) under solvothermal conditions. N-2 isotherms and TEM images showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's have high BET surface areas, large pore volumes, and abundant mesoporosity; CHNS element analysis and acid base titration technology showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's have adjustable sulfur contents (0.31-2.36 mmol/g) and acidic concentrations (0.26-1.86 mmol/g); TG curves showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's exhibited much higher stability of the active site (372 degrees C) than that of the acidic resin of Amberlyst 15 (312 degrees C); contact angle and water adsorption tests showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's exhibited excellent hydrophobic properties. Catalytic tests in esterification of acetic add with cyclohexanol, esterification of acetic acid with 1-butanol, and condensation of benzaldehyde with ethylene glycol showed that H-PDVB-x-SO3H's were more active than those of Amberlyst 15, SO3H-functionalized ordered mesoporous silicas, and beta and USY zeolites, which were even comparable with that of homogeneous H2SO4. The superior hydrophobicity of solid acid catalysts would be favorable for achieving excellent catalytic performance because water usually acts as a byproduct in various-acid-catalyzed reactions, which can easily poison the acid sites and result in opposite reactions. Synthesis of porous solid acid catalysts with good hydrophobicity would be very important for their applications.
