Abstract:High-performance, cost-efficient electrolyte systems are sought after for high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries. However, the expensive precursor and complex synthesis process hinders exploration of cathode electrode/electrolyte interfaces and solvation structures. Here we developed a universal cation replacement method to prepare low-cost, high-reversibility magnesium and calcium electrolytes derived from a zinc organoborate solvation structure. By rationally adjusting the precursor chain length and F-substitution degree, we can fine tune anion participation in the primary solvation shell. A completely dissociated Mg organoborate electrolyte enables high current endurance and enhanced electrochemical kinetics, whereas the Ca organoborate electrolyte with strong coordination/B–H inclusion offers a stable solid–electrolyte interphase with high coulombic efficiency. A rechargeable 53.4 Wh kg −1 Mg metal prototype is achieved with a 30 μm Mg anode, a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (E/S = 5.58 μl mg −1 ) and a modified separator/interlayer. This work provides innovative strategies for reversible electrolyte systems and high-energy-density multivalent metal batteries.

Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Nonaqueous rechargeable magnesium (Mg) batteries suffer from the complicated and moisture-sensitive electrolyte chemistry. Besides electrolytes, the practicality of a Mg battery is also confined by the absence of high-performance electrode materials due to the intrinsically slow Mg2+ diffusion in the solids. In this work, we demonstrated a rechargeable aqueous magnesium ion battery (AMIB) concept of high energy density, fast kinetics, and reversibility. Using a superconcentration approach we expanded the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.0 V. More importantly, two new Mg ion host materials, Li superconcentration approach we expanded the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.0 V. More importantly, two new Mg ion host materials, Li3V2(PO4)3 and poly pyromellitic dianhydride, were developed and employed as cathode and anode electrodes, respectively. Based on comparisons of the aqueous and nonaqueous systems, the role of water is identified to be critical in the Mg ion mobility in the intercalation host but remaining little detrimental to its non-diffusion controlled process. Compared with the previously reported Mg ion cell delivers an unprecedented high power density of 6400 W kg ion cell delivers an unprecedented high power density of 6400 W kg while retaining 92% of the initial capacity after 6000 cycles, pushing the Mg ion cell to a brand new stage.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) metal is a promising anode candidate for high-energy and cost-effective multivalent metal batteries, but suffers from severe surface passivation in conventional electrolytes, especially aqueous solutions. Here, we uncover that MgH2, in addition to the well-known MgO and Mg(OH)2, can be formed during the passivation of Mg by water. The formation mechanism and spatial distribution of MgH2, and its detrimental effect on interfacial dynamics and stability of Mg anode are revealed by comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations. Furthermore, a graphite-based hydrophobic and Mg2+-permeable water-tolerant interphase is drawn using a pencil on the surface of Mg anodes, allowing them to cycle stably in symmetric (> 900 h) and full cells (> 500 cycles) even after contact with water. The mechanistic understanding of MgH2-involved Mg passivation and the design of pencil-drawn waterproof Mg anodes may inspire the further development of Mg metal batteries with high water resistance.

Abstract:Abstract Herein, an eco‐friendly and high safety aqueous Mg‐ion electrolyte (AME) with a wide electrochemical stability window (ESW) ≈3.7 V, containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and low‐concentration salt (0.8 m Mg(TFSI) 2 ), is proposed by solvation structure reorganization of AME. The PEG agent significantly alters the Mg 2+ solvation and hydrogen bonds network of AMEs and forms the direct coordination of Mg 2+ and TFSI ‐ , thus enhancing the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of electrolytes. As an exemplary material, V 2 O 5 nanowires are tested in this new AME and exhibit initial high discharge/charge capacity of 359/326 mAh g ‐1 and high capacity retention of 80% after 100 cycles. The high crystalline α‐V 2 O 5 shows two 2‐phase transition processes with the formation of ε‐Mg 0.6 V 2 O 5 and Mg‐rich Mg x V 2 O 5 ( x ≈ 1.0) during the first discharge. Mg‐rich Mg x V 2 O 5 ( x ≈ 1.0) phase formed through electrochemical Mg‐ion intercalation at room temperature is for the first time observed via XRD. Meanwhile, the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) in aqueous Mg‐ion batteries is revealed for the first time. MgF 2 originating from the decomposition of TFSI ‐ is identified as the dominant component. This work offers a new approach for designing high‐safety, low‐cost, eco‐friendly, and large ESW electrolytes for practical and novel aqueous multivalent batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries are regarded as a promising multi-valent battery system for low-cost and sustainable energy storage applications. Boron-based magnesium salts with terminal substituent fluorinated anions (Mg[B(ORF)4]2, RF = fluorinated alkyl) have exhibited impressive electrochemical stability. Nevertheless, their deployment is hindered by the complicated synthesis routes and the surface passivation of Mg anode. Herein, we report the design of an advanced electrolyte formulation comprised of B(HFIP)3 and I2 in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), which eventually convert into a Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME-MgI2 electrolyte system upon interacting with Mg anode. The Mg anode reacts with I2 and the electron-accepting B(HFIP)3, leading to the in-situ formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase layer composed of MgF2 and MgI2 species that can facilitate fast and stable Mg plating/stripping. Compared with the pristine Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME electrolyte, the Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME-MgI2 electrolyte exhibited superior electrochemical performance including an ultra-low overpotential (~80 mV), high Coulombic efficiency and a long-cycling period over 1500 h. In result, the rechargeable magnesium batteries with Mg[B(HFIP)4]2/DME-MgI2 electrolyte and Mo6S8 cathode show outstanding compatibility, rapid kinetics, and stable cyclability for over 1200 cycles, surpassing all previously reported boron-based electrolytes. This work introduces a promising halogen-enhancement strategy for boron-based Mg-ion electrolytes and is pivotal for the advancement and optimization of multi-valent secondary batteries.

A Novel Asymmetric Diffusion Path for Superior Ion Dynamic in High-Voltage Mg-Based Hybrid Batteries

Abstract:Magnesium-based batteries have garnered significant attention due to their high energy density, excellent intrinsic safety, and low cost. However, the application process has been hindered by the high Mg2+ ions diffusion barrier in solid-state structures and solid-liquid interphase. To address this issue, a hybrid battery technology based on Mg anode and Fe-based Prussian Blue Analogue cathode doped with functional transition metal ions and N═O bonds is proposed. Combined multiscale experimental characterizations with theoretical calculations, the subtle lattice distortion can create an asymmetric diffusion path for the active ions, which enables reversible extraction with significantly reduced diffusion barriers achieved by synergistic doping. The optimized cathode exhibits a working potential of 2.3 V and an initial discharge capacity of 152 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1. With the preferred electrolyte combined with equivalent concentration [Mg2(µ-Cl)2(DME)4][AlCl4]2 and NaTFSI salt solution, the hybrid system demonstrates superior cycling performance over 200 cycles at a high current density of 200 mA g-1, maintaining ≈100% coulombic efficiency with superior ion dynamic. The findings are expected to be marked an important step in the further application of high-voltage cathodes for Mg-based hybrid batteries.
Building Organic–Inorganic Robust Interphases from Deep Eutectic Solution for Highly Stable Mg Metal Anode in Conventional Electrolyte

Abstract:Abstract Magnesium metal batteries (MMBs) currently face challenges suffering from severe Mg metal passivation and extremely high overpotential in conventional electrolytes. Herein, a strategy of using a low‐cost deep eutectic solution (DES) is proposed to modify Mg anode with the monolithic and compact coating of a MgCl 2 ‐Al‐MgCl 2 sandwich structure, enabling the stable and reversible Mg plating–stripping behavior. An organic/nanocrystal hybrid interphase is in‐situ built through a facile Mg‐Al displacement reaction between aluminum‐chloro clusters and Mg in AlCl 3 /Et 3 NHCl solution, and it can effectively minimize the adverse interfacial passivation reaction and surface diffusion barrier, affording the high ion‐conduction and electronic insulation. This DES‐assisted method guarantees a highly reversible cycling of Mg metal anode (over 5000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and 400 h at 2.0 mAh cm −2 ) in Mg(TFSI) 2 /DME electrolyte with the improved interfacial kinetics and low overpotential. Even at a much higher current density of 1 mA cm −2 , the overpotential only undergoes a slight increase from 0.2 V (at 0.1 mA cm −2 ) to 0.23 V. The corresponding full cells with CuS and phenanthraquinone cathodes deliver satisfactory cyclic performance. The DES modification strategy provides a new solution to the design of robust and conductive solid electrolyte interphase for achieving high‐voltage and durable MMBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) represent a promising beyond-lithium technology for energy storage due to their high energy and power densities. However, developing suitable electrolytes compatible with both electrodes and exhibiting high thermal and electrochemical stabilities remains a significant challenge for RMBs. In this study, we present the development of a novel electrolyte for RMBs based on a eutectic mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate. This electrolyte demonstrates a high ionic conductivity of ~ 6.7 mS.cm −1 at room temperature and a wide electrochemical stability window (> 4.5 V vs. Mg/Mg 2+ ). We demonstrate that the present electrolyte enables the reversible operation of an Mg-graphite cell with a discharge capacity of ~ 120 mAh.g −1 for over 500 cycles while maintaining a Coulombic efficiency of > 95%. Furthermore, the distinctive dual-ion transport behavior of the electrolyte is substantiated through the fabrication of a symmetric graphite cell, where both anions and cations exhibit bidirectional movement during the charge and discharge processes. This cell manifests an equivalent discharge capacity to that of Mg-graphite cells. These findings underscore the potential of further optimizing RMBs utilizing this electrolyte, offering prospects for superior energy density and enhanced performance across diverse application domains.

Abstract:Limited by the high de-solvation energy barrier of hydrated Mg 2+ and undesired interfacial water decomposition behavior, aqueous magnesium ion batteries normally suffer from sluggish ion transfer kinetics and drastic cathode dissolution. To overcome these obstacles, inspired by the amphiphilic structure of cell membranes, a MnO 2 /carbon-based cathode composed of hydrophobic poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and hydrophilic α-MnO 2 substrate was successfully constructed. In combination with experimental and theoretical calculations, the PEDOT layer can efficaciously enhance the conductivity for the overall electrode, reduce the de-solvation energy barrier of hydrated Mg 2+ , and inhibit the cathode dissolution, thereby boosting the performance of composite electrodes. Therefore, the as-prepared composite electrode demonstrates superior rate performance (58.4 mAh g −1 , 3 A g −1 ) and enhanced long-term cycle stability (85.92 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles, 2 A g −1 ) which is superior to the pristine α-MnO 2 cathode. Based on the bio-inspired design concept, this work will provide an innovative direction for the development of aqueous magnesium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A polymer-based magnesium (Mg) electrolyte is vital for boosting the development of high-safety and flexible Mg batteries by virtue of its enormous advantages, such as significantly improved safety, potentially high energy density, ease of fabrication, and structural flexibility. Herein, a novel polytetrahydrofuran-borate-based gel polymer electrolyte coupling with glass fiber is synthesized via an in situ crosslinking reaction of magnesium borohydride [Mg(BH4 )2 ] and hydroxyl-terminated polytetrahydrofuran. This gel polymer electrolyte exhibits reversible Mg plating/stripping performance, high Mg-ion conductivity, and remarkable Mg-ion transfer number. The Mo6 S8 /Mg batteries assembled with this gel polymer electrolyte not only work well at wide temperature range (-20 to 60 °C) but also display unprecedented improvements in safety issues without suffering from internal short-circuit failure even after a cutting test. This in situ crosslinking approach toward exploiting the Mg-polymer electrolyte provides a promising strategy for achieving large-scale application of Mg-metal batteries.

Abstract:To realize an energy storage transition beyond Li-ion competitive technologies, earth-abundant elements, such as Mg, are needed. Carborane anions are particularly well-suited to realizing magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs), as their inert and weakly coordinating properties beget excellent electrolyte performance. However, utilizing these materials in actual electrochemical cells has been hampered by the reliance on the Mg2+ salts of the commercially available [HCB11H11]- anion, which is not soluble in more weakly binding solvents apart from the higher glymes. Herein, we demonstrate it is possible to iteratively engineer the [HCB11H11]- anion surface synthetically to address previous solubility issues and yield a highly conductive (up to 7.33 mS cm-1) and electrochemically stable (up to +4.2 V vs Mg2+/0) magnesium electrolyte that surpasses the state of the art. This novel non-nucleophilic electrolyte exhibits highly dissociative behavior regardless of concentration and is tolerant of prolonged periods of cycling in symmetric cells at high current densities (up to 2.0 mA cm-2, 400 h). The hydrocarbon functionalized carborane electrolyte presented here demonstrates >96% Coulombic efficiency when paired with a Mo6S8 cathode. This approach realizes a needed candidate to discover next-generation cathode materials that can enable the design of practical and commercially viable Mg batteries.

Abstract:Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) are considered strong candidates for next-generation energy-storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity, divalent nature and the natural abundancy of magnesium (Mg) resources on Earth. However, the development of MIBs has been mainly limited by the incompatibility of Mg anodes with several Mg salts and conventional organic-liquid electrolytes. Therefore, one major challenge faced by MIBs technology lies on developing safe electrolytes, which demonstrate appropriate electrochemical voltage window and compatibility with Mg anode. This review discusses the development of MIBs from the point-of-view of the electrolyte syntheses. A systematic assessment of promising electrolyte design strategies is proposed including liquid and solid-state electrolytes. Liquid-based electrolytes have been largely explored and can be categorized by solvent-type: organic solvent, aqueous solvent, and ionic-liquids. Organic-liquid electrolytes usually present high electrochemical and chemical stability but are rather dangerous, while aqueous electrolytes present high ionic conductivity and eco-friendliness but narrow electrochemical stability window. Some ionic-liquid electrolytes have proved outstanding performance but are fairly expensive. As alternative to liquid electrolytes, solid-state electrolytes are increasingly attractive to increase energy density and safety. However, improving the ionic conductivity of Mg ions in these types of electrolytes is extremely challenging. We believe that this comprehensive review will enable researchers to rapidly grasp the problems faced by electrolytes for MIBs and the electrolyte design strategies proposed to this date.

To overcome these problems, herein, a novel Mg-intercalation engineering approach for MnO 2 electrode to be used in aqueous MIBs is presented, wherein the structural regulation and electrochemical performance of the Mg-intercalation MnO 2 (denoted as MMO) electrode were thoroughly investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ Raman investigation. The results demonstrate that the Mg intercalation is essential to adjusting the charge/ion state and electronic band gap of MMO electrode, as well as the highly reversible phase transition of the MMO electrode during the charging-discharging process. Because of these remarkable characteristics, the MMO electrode can be capable of delivering a significant specific capacity of ∼419.8 mAh·g −1 , while exhibiting a good cycling capability over 1000 cycles in 1 M aqueous MgCl 2 electrolyte. On the basis of such MMO electrode, we have successfully developed a soft-packaging aqueous MIB with excellent electrochemical properties, revealing its huge application potential as the efficient energy storage devices.
An efficient Hauser-base electrolyte for rechargeable magnesium batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered the promising candidates for post lithium-ion batteries due to the abundant storage, high capacity, and dendrite-rare characteristic of Mg anode. However, the lack of practical electrolytes impedes the development and application of RMBs. Here, through a one-step reaction of LiCl congenital-containing Knochel-Hauser base TMPL (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinylmagnesium chloride lithium chloride complex) with Lewis acid AlCl 3 , we successfully synthesized an efficient amino-magnesium halide TMPLA electrolyte. Raman and mass spectroscopy identified that the electrolyte comprises the typical di-nuclear copolymer [Mg 2 Cl 3 ·6THF] + cation group and [(TMP) 2 AlCl 2 ] − anion group, further supported by the results of density functional theory calculations (DFT) and the Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The TMPLA electrolyte exhibits promising electrochemical performance, including available anodic stability (>2.65 V vs. SS), high ionic conductivity (6.05 mS cm −1 ), and low overpotential (<0.1 V) as well as appropriate Coulombic efficiency (97.3%) for Mg plating/stripping. Both the insertion Mo 6 S 8 cathode and conversion CuS cathode delivered a desirable electrochemical performance with high capacity and good cycling stability based on the TMPLA electrolyte. In particular, when compatible with low cost and easily synthesized CuS, the CuS||Mg cell displayed an extremely high discharge capacity of 458.8 mAh g −1 for the first cycle and stabilized at 170.2 mAh g −1 with high Coulombic efficiency (99.1%) after 50 cycles at 0.05 C. Our work proposes an efficient electrolyte with impressive compatibility with Mg anode and insertion/conversion cathode for practical RMBs and provides a more profound knowledge of the Lewis acid-base reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) batteries represent a promising candidate for energy-dense, sustainable and safe energy storage. However, the realization of practical Mg batteries remains challenging and advanced material design strategies are imperatively necessary. Herein, a novel magnesium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate-based non-corrosive gel polymer electrolyte has been synthesized by an in-situ polymerization. This gel polymer electrolyte exhibits unprecedented electrolytic properties in terms of high ionic conductivity (10−3 S cm−1), reversible Mg plating/stripping capability (Coulombic efficiency ∼99%, 1000 cycles) and low voltage polarization. Simultaneously, the polymeric matrix can prevent dissolution and diffusion of soluble electrode materials. For the first time, the employment of a gel polymer electrolyte to suppress the polysulfide shuttle in Mg−S batteries has been demonstrated. Moreover, it can be extended to other polymer backbones and incorporated with other cathodes for improving battery performance.

Abstract:Aqueous Li-ion batteries are attracting increasing attention because they are potentially low in cost, safe and environmentally friendly. However, their low energy density (<100 Wh kg−1 based on total electrode weight), which results from the narrow operating potential window of water and the limited selection of suitable negative electrodes, is problematic for their future widespread application. Here, we explore optimized eutectic systems of several organic Li salts and show that a room-temperature hydrate melt of Li salts can be used as a stable aqueous electrolyte in which all water molecules participate in Li+ hydration shells while retaining fluidity. This hydrate-melt electrolyte enables a reversible reaction at a commercial Li4Ti5O12 negative electrode with a low reaction potential (1.55 V versus Li+/Li) and a high capacity (175 mAh g−1). The resultant aqueous Li-ion batteries with high energy density (>130 Wh kg−1) and high voltage (∼2.3–3.1 V) represent significant progress towards performance comparable to that of commercial non-aqueous batteries (with energy densities of ∼150–400 Wh kg−1 and voltages of ∼2.4–3.8 V).

Abstract:Aqueous magnesium (Mg)-ion batteries (AMIBs) are gaining considerable amount of attention for large-scale energy storage applications due to their safety, abundance and low cost. Herein we propose a 3D flower-like MgMn2O4 (s-MMO) that tackles main bottlenecks (sluggish electrochemical kinetics) of AMIBs cathode and conduct in-depth research on charge–discharge behaviors in aqueous electrolyte for the first time. With this design, a unique nanofluidic effect with strong confinement of molecules and ions has been achieved by constructing abundant nanofluidic channels, which can fundamentally address the sluggish Mg2+ ion diffusion. It is further elucidated that water molecules enter and remain within MgMn2O4 lattice, presenting a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation of lattice during water activation process. These induced water molecules expand the interplanar spacing (64.1%) and screen the electrostatic interactions between Mg2+ and host framework, which contribute to the significant increase of specific capacity, enhanced electrochemical kinetics and stability of s-MMO electrode. As a proof of this concept, the as-fabricated s-MMO based cell exhibits a high specific capacity up to 194.0 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and maintains capacity retention of 80.9% even after 5 000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1. Here, we have demonstrated a novel water-induced 3D flower-like MgMn2O4 assisted by nanofluidic effect, achieving ultrahigh energy density of 481.4 Wh kg−1 and unprecedentedly durable cycling life (over 16 000 cycles).
