Abstract:Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to optimize the Mo active sites in HBeta zeolite catalysts as well as to locate the reaction pathways to form the Mo-methylidene species. Two different Mo active sites, i.e., the oxidized MoVIO2 and its reduced form MoVO(OH), were developed and incorporated into HBeta zeolites by replacing a pair of Brønsted acidic sites. The Mo-methylidene species were found to be produced through two elementary reaction steps, and the Mo-oxametallacyclobutanes were identified as the intermediates. The activation barriers of the decompositions of the oxametallacyclobutane intermediates (Step 2) were estimated to be higher than those of the ethene addition on the Mo active sites (Step 1). The oxidation states of the Mo centers exerted marked influences on the stabilities of the intermediates as well as on the activation barriers and reaction heats of Steps 1 and 2, which were elucidated by the electronic properties of the Ob-ligands directly bonded to the Mo centers. Both free energy barriers and reaction heats have indicated that the whole processes of generating the Mo-methylidene species were preferred over the Mo(VI) rather than Mo(V) active site. Accordingly, the Mo(VI) active site was more efficient in catalyzing the formation of Mo-methylidene species in the heterogeneous Mo/HBeta catalytic systems.
Structure, Activity, and Stability of Triphenyl Phosphine-Modified Rh/SBA-15 Catalyst for Hydroformylation of Propene: A High-Resolution Solid-State NMR Study

Abstract:A ligand (triphenyl phosphine, PPh3)-modified heterogeneous PPh3-Rh(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst and supported Wilkinson complex HRh(CO)(PPh3)(3)/SBA-15 catalyst were prepared and examined in the hydroformylation of propene. Heterogeneous PPh3-Rh(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst showed much higher activity and stability in this reaction. Multimuclear H-1, Si-29, P-31, and O-17 MAS NMR and two-dimensional O-17 MQ MAS NMR together with XRD and N-2 adsorption were employed to study the local structures of these two catalysts. Quantitative H-1 and Si-29 MAS NMR and qualitative one- and two-dimensional O-17 MAS and MQ MAS NMR indicate that in the presence of CO the silanols on the surface of SBA-15 can react with rhodium carbonyls to form the Si-O-Rh bonds at the interface between the catalyst and the support. IT MAS NMR spectra demonstrate a similar Wilkinson complex structure is produced on the heterogeneous PPh3-Ph(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst. The formation of Si-O-Rh bonds at the interface may immobilize the Rh complex during the long reaction. These may be correlated to the higher performances of heterogeneous PPh3-Rh(CO)/SBA-15 catalyst in propene hydroformylation.

Abstract:Hydroformylation is one of the most important homogeneous reactions in industry. Cu-BTC, as a kind of MOFs material with coordinate unsaturated metal sites, has strong interaction with adsorption molecules and is widely used in adsorption and catalytic research fields. The open metal sites in it can be adjusted according to the demand. In this work, Rh-BTC was selected as the catalyst for the hydroformylation of propylene. In order to regulate the electronic properties of Rh metal center, eight Rh-M-BTC materials (M= Fe, Ru, Mn, Rh, Pt, Pd, Re, Cu, Ni) were investigated. The Mulliken charge of Rh-M metal nodes and the reaction energy barrier of the key steps of propylene hydroformylation on Rh-M-BTC were calculated, including the step of propylene insertion, CO insertion, and aldehyde formation. The results showed that on Rh-Pd-BTC, the energy barrier difference between linear and branched path for the regional decisive step propylene insertion step is the lowest, only 0.04 eV. The reaction energy barrier of the linear path for CO insertion is only half of that of the branched path. The linear path has obvious advantages. Therefore, Rh-Pd-BTC was suggested as the most suitable model studied in the work for hydroformylation of propylene.

Abstract:M-N-C was recently reported as high activity catalyst for hydroformylation compared with the metal nanocluster. However, the nature of M-N-C sites and the dominant path of propylene hydroformylation on M-N-C sites with different structure are poorly understood. In this work, five different Co-N-C models (Co-N3-C, Co-N4-C, 0N-bridged Co2-N6-C, 1N-bridged Co2-N7-C and 2N-bridged Co2-N6-C) were constructed to simulate the Co active sites with different coordination that may exist on the surface of MOF-derived Co-based carbon materials. DFT combined with kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) methods were used to study the catalytic performance for hydroformylation of different Co-N-C models. The result of DFT calculation shows that the coordination number and mode of N atoms could regulate the electronic density of the Co sites. The electronic density of the Co sites further affects catalytic activity. The higher the electronic density is, the lower the energy barrier for partial hydrogenation of propylene and CO insertion reactions. Besides, the catalytic activity is also affected by the strong interaction in closer neighboring Co atoms in some Co2-Nx-C models. The strong interaction affects the adsorption state and energy of species, which also reduces the overall reaction energy barrier. The kMC simulation results further showed that the dominant path of propylene hydroformylation was n-butylaldehyde path for 0N-bridged model, and isobutylaldehyde path for Co-N3-C and 2N-bridged models.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the influence of Mo oxidation state on the olefin metathesis over heterogeneous Mo/HBeta catalyst. Three cluster models of Mo-methylidene active sites with different Mo oxidation states were developed. The olefin such as ethene metathesis on Mo-methylidene occurs via two elementary steps, i.e. the formation of the molybdacyclobutane intermediate and the opening of the four-membered ring. On the basis of the energy profiles, the energy barriers of the second step are largely dependent on the Mo oxidation states, and the reaction rate of Mo-methylidene active sites are found to decrease in the order of MoV>MoVI>MoIV.

Abstract:Titania (TiO2) is widely used in the chemical industry as an efficacious catalyst support, benefiting from its unique strong metal-support interaction. Many proposals have been made to rationalize this effect at the macroscopic level, yet the underlying molecular mechanism is not understood due to the presence of multiple catalytic species on the TiO2 surface. This challenge can be addressed with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring well-defined metal oxo/hydroxo clusters for supporting single-site catalysts. Herein we report that the Ti8(μ2-O)8(μ2-OH)4 node of the Ti-BDC MOF (MIL-125) provides a single-site model of the classical TiO2 support to enable CoII-hydride-catalyzed arene hydrogenation. The catalytic activity of the supported CoII-hydride is strongly dependent on the reduction of the Ti-oxo cluster, definitively proving the pivotal role of TiIII in the performance of the supported catalyst. This work thus provides a molecularly precise model of Ti-oxo clusters for understating the strong metal-support interaction of TiO2-supported heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the detailed reaction mechanism of the cross-metathesis of ethylene and 2-butylene over heterogeneous Mo/HBeta catalysts. The whole process is divided into two stages: the initiation of Mo–carbene species from Mo-oxo precursors and the propagating process by these active sites to yield propylene. The formation of initial Mo–carbene takes place via the endothermic addition and the subsequent decomposition of the oxametallacyclobutane intermediate. In the propagating stage to yield the final products, MoCHCH3 firstly reacts with ethylene to form MoCH2, which would further react with 2-butylene to give another propylene molecule. The oxidation states of the Mo species have great influences on the reactivities associated with these two stages. It is unfavorable for MoIV-oxo precursors to produce Mo–alkylidene species compared with MoVI and MoV sites. The energy barriers indicate that the MoVI and MoV–alkylidene species could catalyze the olefin metathesis reaction, but MoV ones are more preferred to be the active sites. The calculation results are consistent with our previous XPS results.

Abstract:Multinuclear MAS NMR together with XRD and N2 adsorption were employed to characterize the local structures of heterogeneous Ph3P-Rh/SBA-15 and supported homogeneous HRh(CO)(PPh3)3/SBA-15 catalysts. It is found that Ph3P-Rh complex can be tightly grafted on SBA-15 through the Si-O-Rh bonds while much less such bonds are formed in the supported homogeneous counterpart. This can be correlated to the longer catalytic life of heterogeneous PPh3-Rh/SBA-15 for propylene hydroformylation.

Abstract:Rh-based bimetallic catalysts are promising ligand-free heterogeneous catalysts for hydroformylation reactions. It is important to understand the mechanism of this bimetallic promotion for designing highly selective and active heterogenous catalysts. In this work, the RhCo bimetallic catalyst was investigated focusing on the promotion effect of Co for the gasphase hydroformylation of ethene. Adding Co to Rh increased both the catalytic productivity and selectivity to oxygenates. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and CO-temperature programmed desorption were used to characterize CO adsorption. The results showed that the addition of Co to Rh changed the CO adsorption modes and strength for the Rh-based catalyst. Modulated CO adsorption strength was important to enhance selectivity. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to reveal the reaction mechanism. A reaction pathway was proposed to clarify the reason for enhanced selectivity on a Si O, RhCo bimetallic catalyst and show that the ratio between CO migration and desorption played a great role in this reaction.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials in the field of catalysis. They offer an optimal ground for screening catalysts and tailoring their catalytic properties. In this work, we investigate the catalytic activity of the propylene oligomerization reaction on the trimetallic MOF nodes, Fe2Ni, by varying the active metal Ni with other 3d-transition metals ranging from Sc to Cu, aiming to grasp the impact of altering the active atoms on the catalyst’s activity. Additionally, we examined how substituting the spectator atom, Fe, in Fe2Ni with other transition metals, i.e., from Sc to Cu, affects these energy barriers. In addition, we found a correlative relationship between spin-density from natural population analysis and energy barriers in the realm of C-C bond formation, whereby an elevation in spin density is found to be inversely proportional to the magnitude of energy barriers. Moreover, we calculated the energy barriers for C-C coupling and β-hydride elimination using multireference NEVPT2 calculations on top of the CASSCF wavefunction to validate the rate-determining step of the reaction.

Abstract:Abstract Finding heterogeneous catalysts that are superior to homogeneous ones for selective catalytic transformations is a major challenge in catalysis. Here, we show how micropores in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) push homogeneous catalytic reactions into kinetic regimes inaccessible under standard conditions. Such property allows branched selectivity up to 90% in the Co-catalysed hydroformylation of olefins without directing groups, not achievable with existing catalysts. This finding has a big potential in the production of aldehydes for the fine chemical industry. Monte Carlo and density functional theory simulations combined with kinetic models show that the micropores of MOFs with UMCM-1 and MOF-74 topologies increase the olefins density beyond neat conditions while partially preventing the adsorption of syngas leading to high branched selectivity. The easy experimental protocol and the chemical and structural flexibility of MOFs will attract the interest of the fine chemical industries towards the design of heterogeneous processes with exceptional selectivity.

Abstract:Transition metal‐catalyzed hydroformylation reaction of olefins is one of the most important transformations in the perspective of both industrial applications and academic research. This synthetic process provides a straightforward and easy way for the transformations of inexpensive feedstock (mostly different alkene molecules) to valuable aldehyde compounds, which are considered as major building blocks for several essential chemical products. Inspired and motivated by the tremendous success of homogeneous catalysis for hydroformylation reactions, paramount interests have been raised for the design and development of active heterogeneous catalysts owning advantages from both molecular and material sciences. Crystalline metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) as solid support to immobilize active catalysts for the hydroformylation reaction have shown appealing promises as heterogeneous catalysts. This review sketches out a decade of developments of MOF‐based heterogeneous catalysts for the hydroformylation of olefins while discussing both advantages and limitations for their implementation beyond the lab scale.

Abstract:A comprehensive theoretical investigation on the mechanism of hydroformylation and hydrogenation of propyne catalyzed by the modified catalyst HRh(CO)2(PH3) is carried out employing a nonlocal density functional method (B3LYP). There are a number of possible pathways for this catalytic cycle. It comes to the conclusion from computation that the propyne insertion into Rh–H bond step is irreversible and thus the regioselectivity-limiting step for the whole catalytic cycle. The results from calculation indicate that the energy barrier for hydroformylation of propyne is obviously lower than that of hydrogenation, so hydroformylation of propyne could be easier than propyne hydrogenation. The main product is trans-butenal originated from hydroformylation and can be further hydrogenated to give birth to butanal at last.

Abstract:Molecularly defined organometallic rhodium phosphine complexes were efficiently heterogenized within a MOF structure without affecting neither their molecular nature nor their catalytic behavior. Phosphine-functionalized MOF-808 served as a solid ligand in a series of eight rhodium phosphine catalysts. These MOF-heterogenized molecular catalysts showed activity up to 2100 h–1 for ethylene hydroformylation toward propionaldehyde as the sole carbon-containing product. The combined experimental and computational methods applied to this unique MOF-based molecular system allowed unraveling the structure and evolution of the active Rh species within the MOF under catalytic conditions, in line with the molecular mechanisms at play during the hydroformylation reaction. The MOF-based Rh catalyst also successfully catalyzed the hydroformylation of longer and bulkier alkenes with similar activity and selectivity than that obtained with its molecular homogeneous counterpart. MOF-808, designed as a porous crystalline macroligand for well-defined molecular catalysts, allows benefiting from the molecular scale understanding of interactions and mechanisms as well as from stabilization through site isolation and recycling ability.

Abstract:Currently, the hydroformylation of short olefins is operated almost exclusively by using Rh catalysts. Considering the high cost and scarcity of rhodium resources, it is important to develop non-noble metal catalysts toward hydroformylation. Herein, we report an efficient cobalt-based catalyst rich in interfacial sites between metallic and oxidized cobalt species for the hydroformylation of short olefin, propene, under a moderate syngas pressure. The catalyst exhibited a high specific activity of 252 mol molCo-1 h-1 in toluene under 2 bar of propene and 40 bar of CO/H2 mixed gas (CO/H2 = 1:1) at 160 °C. According to mechanistic studies, the interface of metallic and oxidized cobalt species promoted the adsorption of CO and propene. Moreover, the interfacial sites lowered the energy barrier for CO* hydrogenation and C-C coupling compared with metallic cobalt.

Abstract:Molecular iridium catalysts immobilized in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were positioned in the condensing chamber of a Soxhlet extractor for efficient CO2 hydrogenation. Droplets of hot water seeped through the MOF catalyst to create dynamic gas/liquid interfaces which maximize the contact of CO2, H2, H2O, and the catalyst to achieve a high turnover frequency of 410 h-1 under atmospheric pressure and at 85 °C. H/D kinetic isotope effect measurements and density functional theory calculations revealed concerted proton-hydride transfer in the rate-determining step of CO2 hydrogenation, which was difficult to unravel in homogeneous reactions due to base-catalyzed H/D exchange.

Abstract:The mechanisms of the transfer hydroformylation reactions catalyzed by rhodium, cobalt, and iridium complexes were studied by using the density functional theory. There are nine stages in each catalytic cycle: oxidation addition and C−H activation, hydrogen transfer and benzoic acid dissociation, anti-insertion reaction (decarbonylation), β-H elimination, nucleophilic substitution 1 (SN1) of ligand, C=C insertion, C=O insertion, coordination of benzoic acid and hydrogen transfer, and reductive elimination and aldehyde dissociation for catalyst regeneration. The total free energy barriers of the reactions catalyzed by Rh, Co and Ir complexes are 25.1 (3Rh → TS11,12-Rh), 27.3 (1Co → TS5,6-Co) and 41.5 (14Ir → TS14,1-Ir) kcal/mol, respectively. Such barriers indicate that the newly proposed cobalt complex could be a potential low-cost catalyst for the transfer hydroformylation reaction under mild conditions. The electronic structures of key intermediates and transition states in the reactions were analyzed by using the natural bond orbital theory and the Multiwfn program.

Abstract:Two heterobimetallic Mo,M’ complexes (M’ = IrIII, RhIII) were synthesized and fully characterized. Their catalytic activity in homogeneous carbon dioxide hydrogenation to formate was studied. A pronounced synergistic effect between the two metals was found, most notably between Mo and Ir, leading to a fourfold increase in activity compared with a binary mixture of the two monometallic counterparts. This synergism can be attributed to spatial proximity of the two metals rather than electronic interactions. To further understand the nature of this interaction, the mechanism of the CO2 hydrogenation to formate by a monometallic IrIII catalyst was studied using computational and spectroscopic methods. The resting state of the reaction was found to be the metal-base adduct, whereas the rate-determining step is the inner-sphere hydride transfer to CO2. Based on these findings, the synergism in the heterobimetallic complex is beneficial in this key step, most likely by further activating the CO2.

Abstract:The hydroformylation of olefins is one of the most important industrial processes used for aldehyde synthesis, which commonly involves the use of scarce and expensive rhodium-based catalysts. It is therefore important to develop inexpensive catalysts, e.g., cobalt-based catalysts with sufficiently high activity and stability for hydroformylation. However, conventional metallic Co clusters, acting as active centers, suffer from low activity and severe metal leaching. Here, we show that Mo6C2-bonded Co can serve as an efficient active center for propene hydroformylation, with a total turnover number of 3158 after five in situ cycles, which is approximately 7.5 times higher than that of conventional metallic Co clusters. Furthermore, the developed Co6Mo6C2 catalyst effectively suppresses cobalt leaching, demonstrating its stability in a long-lasting test. The results of theoretical calculations and characterization analyses demonstrate that the enhanced activity and stability of Mo6C2-bonded Co result from a reduction in the overall energy barrier for hydroformylation and the stability of the Co6Mo6C2 crystal structure, which originates from the strong interaction between Co and the support.

Abstract:Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts generally have limited selectivity relative to their homogeneous counterparts in hydroformylation reactions despite of the convenience of catalyst separation in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we develop CoO-supported Rh single-atom catalysts (Rh/CoO) with remarkable activity and selectivity towards propene hydroformylation. By increasing Rh mass loading, isolated Rh atoms switch to aggregated clusters of different atomicity. During the hydroformylation, Rh/CoO achieves the optimal selectivity of 94.4% for butyraldehyde and the highest turnover frequency number of 2,065 h −1 among the obtained atomic-scale Rh-based catalysts. Mechanistic studies reveal that a structural reconstruction of Rh single atoms in Rh/CoO occurs during the catalytic process, facilitating the adsorption and activation of reactants. In kinetic view, linear products are determined as the dominating products by analysing reaction paths deriving from the two most stable co-adsorbed configurations. As a bridge of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, single-atom catalysts can be potentially applied in other industrial reactions.
