Abstract:Current status of dynamical modeling of relativistic heavy ion collisions and hydrodynamic description of the quark gluon plasma is reported. We find the hadronic rescattering effect plays an important role in interpretation of mass splitting pattern in the differential elliptic flow data observed at RHIC. To demonstrate this, we predict the elliptic flow parameter for phi mesons to directly observe the flow just after hadronisation. We also discuss recent applications of outputs from hydrodynamic calculations to J/psi suppression, thermal photon radiation and heavy quark diffusion.

Abstract:We investigate the space-time evolution of ultrarelativistic Au-Au collisions at full RHIC energy using a schematic model of the expansion. Assuming a thermally equilibrated system, we can adjust the essential scale parameters of this model such that the measured transverse momentum spectra and Hanbury-Brown Twiss (HBT) correlation parameters are well described. We find that the experimental data strongly constrain the dynamics of the evolution of the emission source although hadronic observables for the most part reflect the final breakup of the system.

Abstract:It has long been debated whether the hydrodynamics is suitable for the smaller colliding systems such as p+p collisions. In this paper, by assuming the existence of longitudinal collective motion and long-range interactions in the hot and dense matter created in p+p collisions, the relativistic hydrodynamics incorporating with the nonextensive statistics is used to analyze the transverse momentum distributions of the particles. The investigations of present paper show that the hybrid model can give a good description of the currently available experimental data obtained in p+p collisions at RHIC and LHC energies, except for p and p^bar produced in the range of p_T> 3.0 GeV/c at sqrt(s)=200 GeV.

Collective flow and the fluid behavior in p/d/$^3$He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV

Abstract:By varying the intrinsic initial geometry, the p/d/$^3$He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provide a unique opportunity to understand the collective behavior and probe the possible sub-nucleon fluctuations in small systems. In this paper, we employ the hybrid model iEBE-VISHNU with Trento initial conditions to study the collective flow and the fluid behavior in p/d/$^3$He+Au collisions. With fine-tuned parameters, iEBE-VISHNU can describe the $v_2(p_T)$ and $v_3(p_T)$ data from the PHENIX and STAR collaborations. However, for some certain parameter sets with initial sub-nucleon fluctuation, the hydrodynamic simulations have already beyond their limits with the average Knudsen number $\langle K_n \rangle$ obviously larger than one. Our calculations demonstrate that, for a meaningful evaluation of the fluid behavior in the small systems, model simulations should also pay attention to the validity range of hydrodynamics.

Abstract:Rapid 3+1D transverse plus Bjorken collective expansion in A+A collisionsat ultra-relativistic energies is shown to reduce substantially the azimuthalasymmetry resulting from jet quenching. While the azimuthal asymmetry innon-central collisions, v_2(p_T>2 GeV/c)∼ 0.15 reported by STAR atRHIC, can be accounted for by spatially anisotropic jet energy loss through a1+1D expanding gluon plasma with dN^g/dy∼ 1000, we show that if rapidtransverse collective expansion of the plasma is assumed, then the asymmetrydue to jet quenching may be reduced below the observed level. Possibleimplications of this effect are discussed.

Abstract:High-energy nuclear collisions exhibit collective flow, which emerges as a dynamical response of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) to the initial state geometry of the collision. Collective flow in heavy-ion collisions is usually described within multi-stage evolution models, which employ a viscous relativistic hydrodynamic description of the space-time evolution of the QGP. By comparing event-by-event simulations in kinetic theory and viscous hydrodynamics in OO, AuAu and PbPb collisions at RHIC and LHC energies, we quantify to what extent a macroscopic hydrodynamic description can accurately describe the development of collective flow and to what extent collective flow in small systems, such as OO, is sensitive to the non-equilibrium evolution of the QGP beyond hydrodynamics.

Tunable Molecular Resonances of Double Quantum Dots Embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

Abstract:We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.

Abstract:We review several facets of the hydrodynamic description of the relativistic heavy ion collisions, starting from the historical motivation to the present understandings of the observed collective aspects of experimental data, especially those of the most recent RHIC and LHC results. In this report, we particularly focus on the conceptual questions and the physical foundations of the validity of the hydrodynamic approach itself. We also discuss recent efforts to clarify some of the points in this direction, such as the various forms of derivations of relativistic hydrodynamics together with the limitations intrinsic to the traditional approaches, variational approaches, known analytic solutions for special cases, and several new theoretical developments. Throughout this review, we stress the role of course-graining procedure in the hydrodynamic description and discuss its relation to the physical observables through the analysis of a hydrodynamic mapping of a microscopic transport model. Several questions to be answered to clarify the physics of collective phenomena in the relativistic heavy ion collisions are pointed out.

Abstract:The success of relativistic hydrodynamics as an essential part of the phenomenological description of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC has motivated a significant body of theoretical work concerning its fundamental aspects. Our review presents these developments from the perspective of the underlying microscopic physics, using the language of quantum field theory, relativistic kinetic theory, and holography. We discuss the gradient expansion, the phenomenon of hydrodynamization, as well as several models of hydrodynamic evolution equations, highlighting the interplay between collective long-lived and transient modes in relativistic matter. Our aim to provide a unified presentation of this vast subject -- which is naturally expressed in diverse mathematical languages -- has also led us to include several new results on the large-order behaviour of the hydrodynamic gradient~expansion.

Anisotropic transverse flow and the quark-hadron phase transition

Abstract:We use (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics with exact longitudinal boost-invariance to study the influence of collision centrality and initial energy density on the transverse flow pattern and the angular distributions of particles emitted near midrapidity in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We concentrate on radial flow and the elliptic flow coefficient v2 as functions of the impact parameter and of the collision energy. We demonstrate that the finally observed elliptic flow is established earlier in the collision than the observed radial flow and thus probes the equation of state at higher energy densities. We point out that a phase transition from hadronic matter to a color-deconfined quark-gluon plasma leads to non-monotonic behaviour in both beam energy and impact parameter dependences which, if observed, can be used to identify such a phase transition. Our calculations span collision energies from the Brookhaven AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron) to beyond the LHC (Large Hadron Collider); the QGP phase transition signature is predicted between the lowest available SPS (CERN Super Proton Synchrotron) and the highest RHIC (Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) energies. To optimize the chances for applicability of hydrodynamics we suggest to study the excitation function of flow anisotropies in central uranium-uranium collisions in the side-on-side collision geometry.

Abstract:I outline experimental results on heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for a non-technical audience. This includes: elliptic flow and nearly ideal hydrodynamics; the suppression of hard particles and the ratio R_AA; and electromagnetic signals, including dileptons and direct photons. Especially puzzling is why the behavior of heavy (charm) quarks appears to be so similar to that of light quarks.

Transverse Momentum in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions: Collective Expansion.

Abstract:Hadron production in the central region in high-energy nuclear collisions is investigated. The hydrodynamical expansion of a locally thermalized system is studied for both the cases with and without phase transition. The case with phase transition is considered by using a sound-velocity function ${c}_{s}$(T) parametrized to fit the energy density determined in a lattice gauge calculation. The effect of a transverse rarefaction wave is included in the calculation of the temperature profile of the expanding fluid. The transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons is calculated by collecting all the hadrons produced when the hadron gas is cooled down to a freeze-out temperature at different times in the expansion. Fluctuation in initial temperature and radius is allowed due to variation in impact parameter. On the basis of a study of the thermalization process in the parton model we impose a constraint on the initial temperature and the thermalization time, the simultaneous variation of both of which gives rise to a relationship between the average transverse momentum and rapidity density. We have found that there is no so-called ``plateau'' region in that relationship. The implication on the diagnostics of a quark-gluon plasma is discussed.

Abstract:We report recent results from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model on the azimuthal anisotropies of particle momentum distributions in heavy ion collisions at the relativistic heavy ion collider. These include higher-order anisotropic flows and their scaling, the rapidity dependence of anisotropic flows and the elliptic flow of charm quarks.

Abstract:The photon emission from the late stages of the dynamical evolution of heavy-ion reactions at the highest RHIC and LHC energies is investigated. A comparison between a calculation from hadronic rates from a fluid dynamic evolution down to temperatures of 120 MeV and a full non-equilibrium hadronic transport approach is performed. The photon yields are very similar in both cases while the elliptic flow is slightly smaller in the non-equilibrium scenario. This study is important, since it is crucial to apply the same dynamical evolution model for hadronic and electromagnetic observables.

Dynamical freeze-out condition in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions

Abstract:We determine the decoupling surfaces for the hydrodynamic description of heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC by comparing the local hydrodynamic expansion rate with the microscopic pion-pion scattering rate. The pion $p_T$ spectra for nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC are computed by applying the Cooper-Frye procedure on the dynamical-decoupling surfaces, and compared with those obtained from the constant-temperature freeze-out surfaces. Comparison with RHIC data shows that the system indeed decouples when the expansion rate becomes comparable with the pion scattering rate. The dynamical decoupling based on the rates comparison also suggests that the effective decoupling temperature in central heavy ion collisions remains practically unchanged from RHIC to LHC.

Abstract:We construct a dynamical model for high-energy heavy-ion collision based on the relativistic resistive magneto-hydrodynamic framework. Using our newly developed (3+1)-dimensional relativistic resistive magneto-hydrodynamics code, we investigate magneto-hydrodynamic expansion in symmetric and asymmetric collision systems as a first application to high-energy heavy-ion collisions. As a realistic initial condition for electromagnetic fields, we consider the solutions of the Maxwell equations with the source term of point charged particles moving in the direction of the beam axis, including finite constant electrical conductivity of the medium. We evaluate the directed flow in the symmetric and asymmetric collisions at RHIC energy. We find a significant effect of finite electrical conductivity on the directed flow in the asymmetric collision system. We confirm that a certain amount of energy transfer by dissipation associated with Ohmic conduction occurs in the asymmetric collision system because of asymmetry of the electric field produced by two different colliding nuclei. Because this energy transfer makes the pressure gradient of the medium flatter, the growth of directed flow decreases.

Abstract:We explore the phase diagram of SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory with dynamical fermions in the temperature, mass, chemical potential space. We observe qualitative changes of the dependence of the particle density on $\mu$ and $T$, which is compatible with that expected of a gas of free massless quarks $n \propto \mu^3$ only for $T \simeq T_c$. At the onset for thermodynamics the interquark potential flattens at large separations, indicating enhanced fermion screening and the transition to a deconfined phase. Temporal and spatial Polyakov loops behave in different ways, the latter being nearly insensitive to the chemical potential. The rotation of the chiral condensate to a baryonic condensate, as inferred from the susceptibilities, might occur together with a reduction of its magnitude in the chiral limit, possibly leading to a critical temperature for diquark condensation smaller than the deconfinement temperature. We further asses the rôle of the chemical potential into the gauge dynamics by carrying out a partial quenched calculation. We speculate on the relevance, or lack thereof, of our findings to real QCD.
