Abstract:Renewable power generation is the key to decarbonizing the electricity system. Wind power is the fastest-growing renewable source of electricity in the United States. However, expanding wind capacity often faces local opposition, partly due to a perceived visual disamenity from large wind turbines. Here, we provide a US-wide assessment of the externality costs of wind power generation through the visibility impact on property values. To this end, we create a database on wind turbine visibility, combining information on the site and height of each utility-scale turbine having fed power into the U.S. grid, with a high-resolution elevation map to account for the underlying topography of the landscape. Building on hedonic valuation theory, we statistically estimate the impact of wind turbine visibility on home values, informed by data from the majority of home sales in the United States since 1997. We find that on average, wind turbine visibility negatively affects home values in an economically and statistically significant way in close proximity ([Formula: see text]5 miles/8 km). However, the effect diminishes over time and in distance and is indistinguishable from zero for larger distances and toward the end of our sample.

Abstract:Basic forms of wind power generation in built environment and some indexes which evaluate the feasibility of wind power utilization were introduced. Considering the special location of Anzhong Building, the wind field around building was simulated by the computational fluid dynamics method. Some special places with large wind velocity, such as passageway, wind duct and building roof, were chosen to conduct further analysis. The utilization feasibility was evaluated using the index of wind speed increasing coefficient and proposals about reasonably installing wind turbines were proposed. Results show that the wind velocity at the building corner and passageway increases obviously and micro-turbines can be installed here. Considering economy and efficiency, it is feasible to install some horizontal-axis wind turbines on tower along the height. In the wind duct of the building, the wind velocity also increases significantly, especially when the direction of wind is parallel to that of the duct depth. The horizontal-axis wind turbine is suitable to be located at the front edge of duct. The wind power concentration effect on the roof of Anzhong Building is obvious with the increasing wind velocity, and multi rows of wind turbines can be installed according to the size of roof.
Getting more with less? Why repowering onshore wind farms does not always lead to more wind power generation -- a German case study

Abstract:The best wind locations are nowadays often occupied by old, less efficient and relatively small wind turbines. Many of them will soon reach the end of their operating lifetime, or lose financial support. Therefore, repowering comes to the fore. However, social acceptance and land use restrictions have been under constant change since the initial expansions, which makes less area available for new turbines, even on existing sites. For the example of Germany, this study assesses the repowering potential for onshore wind energy in high detail, on the basis of regionally differentiated land eligibility criteria. The results show that under the given regional criteria, repowering will decrease both operating capacity and annual energy yield by roughly 40\,\% compared to the status quo. This is because around half of the wind turbines are currently located in restricted areas, given newly enacted exclusion criteria. Sensitivity analyses on the exclusion criteria show that the minimum distance to discontinuous urban fabric is the most sensitive criterion in determining the number of turbines that can be repowered. As regulations on this can vary substantially across different regions, the location-specific methodology chosen here can assess the repowering potential more realistically than existing approaches.

Abstract:While the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy will benefit many constituencies, recent work suggests that newly activated solar panels may negatively impact nearby housing prices. Although a single mechanism driving these effects has not been causally identified, alternative explanations posit that homes near solar farms lose value either due to glare or the loss of open space amenities and associated rural character. We supplement this literature with an analysis distinguished by a unique sample with the most equatorial location to date and the largest average solar farm (26 MW), allowing for a careful investigation of the role of size and glare in the capitalization of solar farm proximity. Using hedonic analysis, manually traced solar farm footprints, and difference-in-differences identification, we find a 6.86% negative capitalization of solar farm proximity that does not appear to be attributable to glare and is driven by the impacts of very large solar farms. The results are robust to concerns of negative weights associated with bad controls. To limit economic losses associated with the renewable energy transition, solar farms should be strategically located to minimize the number of nearby homes regardless of whether glare is likely to be a concern.

Abstract:Local opposition to the installation of renewable energy sources is a potential threat to the energy transition. Local communities tend to oppose the construction of energy plants due to the associated negative externalities (the so-called 'not in my backyard' or NIMBY phenomenon) according to widespread belief, mostly based on anecdotal evidence. Using administrative data on wind turbine installation and electoral outcomes across municipalities located in the South of Italy during 2000-19, we estimate the impact of wind turbines' installation on incumbent regional governments' electoral support during the next elections. Our main findings, derived by a wind-speed based instrumental variable strategy, point in the direction of a mild and not statistically significant electoral backlash for right-wing regional administrations and of a strong and statistically significant positive reinforcement for left-wing regional administrations. Based on our analysis, the hypothesis of an electoral effect of NIMBY type of behavior in connection with the development of wind turbines appears not to be supported by the data.

Energy and carbon audit of a rooftop wind turbine

Abstract:Microgeneration is being promoted as a means of lowering carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions by replacing electricity from the grid with production from small domestic generators. One concern over this drive is that the use of smaller plant could lead to the loss of economies of scale. Partly, this relates to cost but also in terms of energy consumed and CO 2 emitted over the life cycle of the microgenerator. Here, an analysis is presented of a life-cycle audit of the energy use and CO 2 emissions for the ‘SWIFT’, a 1.5 kW rooftop-mounted, grid-connected wind turbine. The analysis shows that per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated by the turbine, the energy intensity and CO 2 emissions are comparable with larger wind turbines and significantly lower than fossil-fuelled generation. With energy and carbon intensities sensitive to assumed levels of production, assessments were carried out for an annual production range of 1000–4000 kWh, representing capacity factors of 8–31 per cent. For the manufacturer's estimated production of 2000 to 3000 kWh and, giving credit for component recycling, the energy payback period was found to be between 17 and 25 months, whereas the CO 2 payback was between 13 and 20 months. Across the full production range, the energy and carbon payback periods were 13–50 months and 10–39 months, respectively. A key outcome of the study is to inform the manufacturer of the opportunities for improving the energy and carbon intensities of the turbine. A simple example is presented showing the impact of replacing one of the larger aluminium components with alternative materials.
Strategic selection of wind turbines for low wind speed regions: Impact on cost and environmental benefits

Abstract:Integrating renewable energy sources into the power system is essential for rapid and cost-effective decarbonization. This study evaluates the potential of a wind farm by analyzing three turbine models – VESTAS, GAMESA, and W2E – with power capacities from 2.5 MW to 8 MW. The analysis focuses on Region III, characterized by wind speeds below 7.5 m/s. Using the RETScreen model, the study identifies an optimized wind-rated power (OWRP) that balances financial viability, technical performance, and capacity factors. Monte Carlo simulations and sensitivity analyses assess financial indicators such as the levelized cost of energy, net present value, and equity payback period. The framework also considers greenhouse gas (GHG) credits. Results show that turbines with 4.5 MW power, rotor diameters of 105–128 m, and hub heights of 150 m are the most feasible. The project would reduce annual CO 2 emissions by 187,097 tons and avoid 82,031 tons of fossil fuel consumption, equivalent to 17,559 hectares of forest CO 2 absorption or 190,915 people cutting energy use by 20%. Without GHG credits, the equity payback period is 6.2 years; with a €50/tCO 2 credit, it drops to 2.7 years. These findings offer policymakers in Albania and similar low-wind regions a guide to meeting 2050 energy and climate targets.

Abstract:Growing international demand for renewable energy has led to rapid growth in the wind power sector and wind farms are becoming an increasingly common feature of landscapes and seascapes in many countries. However, as the most appropriate locations within established markets are taken up, and as wind power penetrates new markets, there is an increasing likelihood that proposed projects will encroach on sensitive landscapes and residential areas. This will present challenges for the industry, particularly due to the impact that public opinion can have upon the outcomes of planning decisions about specific projects. This article introduces the four key dimensions of the WindNet programme, which are helping to elucidate some of the socio-technical debates that will likely shape the future of the wind power sector. The article outlines studies investigating (1) public responses to cumulative landscape and visual impacts, (2) the auditory impact of wind power projects on human health, (3) the science of wind farm design and its implications for planning, and (4) the relevance of the democratic deficit explanation of the so-called "social gap" in wind farm siting. The outcomes of the research being conducted by WindNet stand to help reduce uncertainty within the planning process and assist in providing a more comprehensive and fairer assessment of the possible impacts associated with wind power project development.

Abstract:Transitioning to a sustainable energy production system is an integral component of mitigating climate change impacts. Increasing renewable energy development—such as large-scale wind farms—is a vital part of this transition. Wind energy development is often controversial due to local pushback to the proposed installations. This phenomenon of local opposition is characterized as Not-In-My-Back-Yard (NIMBY). Here, we used Ostrom’s Social-Ecological System (SES) framework to conduct a structured analysis of anti-wind energy development narratives associated with the failed Wind Catcher Project in the south-central region of the United States of America (USA). Our findings indicate that local values and perceptions of social and economic resources are the most critical factors explaining opposition to wind energy development, with little weight placed on environmental concerns. The wind farm, turbines, and associated transmission lines were seen as a threat to people’s way of life and their perception of place. In addition, past experiences with volatile energy prices caused distrust of long-term projections on cost savings. Our analysis suggests that new energy development projects must include open discussions with local stakeholders, more thoughtful consideration of opposing arguments and concerns, and acknowledgment of local place attachment to avoid pushback.

Abstract:Abstract. Wind turbines are designed to minimize the economic cost of energy, a metric aimed at making wind competitive with other energy-producing technologies. However, now that wind energy is competitive, how can we increase its value for the environment and for society? And how much would environmental and societal gains cost other stakeholders, such as investors or consumers? This paper tries to answer these questions, limitedly to climate-related environmental impacts, from the perspective of wind turbine design. Although wind turbines produce green renewable energy, they also have various impacts on the environment, as do all human endeavors. Among all impacts, the present work adopts the environmental effects produced by a turbine over its entire life cycle, expressed in terms of CO2-equivalent emissions. A new approach to design is proposed, whereby Pareto fronts of solutions are computed to define optimal trade-offs between economic and environmental goals. The new proposed methodology is demonstrated on the redesign of a baseline 3 MW wind turbine at two locations in Germany, differing for typical wind speeds but within the same energy market. Among other results, it is found that, in these conditions, a 1 % increase in the cost of energy can buy about a 5 % decrease in the environmental impact of the turbine. Additionally, it is also observed that in the specific case of Germany, very low-specific-power designs are typically favored, because they produce more energy at low wind speeds, where both the economic and environmental values of wind are higher. Furthermore, it is found that the CO2-equivalent emissions displaced by a wind turbine are 1 order of magnitude larger than the produced emissions. Although limited to the sole optimization of wind-generating assets at two different locations, these results suggest the existence of new opportunities for the future development of wind energy where, by shifting the focus slightly away from a purely cost-driven short-term perspective, longer-term benefits for the environment (and, in turn, for society) may be obtained.
Impact of atmospheric turbulence on wind farms sited over complex terrain

Abstract:This article investigates the impact of atmospheric turbulence on wind farms in mountainous regions using Scale-Adaptive Large-Eddy Simulation (SALES) combined with the immersed boundary method. An array of 25 Gaussian hills was considered to mimic the mountainous terrain, and three cases were simulated: atmospheric boundary layer flow over complex terrain, 25 full-scale turbines positioned on hilltops, and 125 full-scale turbines positioned across the mountainous landscape. These simulations captured the intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity caused by the complex topographic features of mountainous terrain, challenging the assumption of horizontally homogeneous atmospheric turbulence. This study emphasizes the significance of velocity gradient dynamics and stresses on surface mounted obstacles to evaluate data quality and uncertainty. However, it also considered more detailed comparisons with other methods, validation of topographic impact using experimental work with windbreak and isolated hill, and a comprehensive analysis of the results. The findings include significantly enhanced power production at hilltop turbine locations as compared to homogeneous terrain. Although wind turbines in windward and leeward directions experienced a reduced power output in the near-wake region, these local losses recovered globally by the enhanced vertical energy entrainment from higher altitudes. Additionally, the presence of mountains indicated an increase in the power density by up to five times compared to flat terrain. A wavelet-based autoencoder demonstrated superior performance in separating the harmonic component of time-varying mean and subgrid-scale fluctuations compared to constant and Gaussian weighting kernels. The study suggests wavelet filtering as a promising technique for subgrid-scale modeling, offering improvements not only in wind energy applications but also in other turbulence flow scenarios.

Abstract:Wind power, a rapidly growing alternative energy source, has been threatened by reductions in global average surface wind speed, which have been occurring over land since the 1980s, a phenomenon known as global terrestrial stilling. Here, we use wind data from in situ stations worldwide to show that the stilling reversed around 2010 and that global wind speeds over land have recovered. We illustrate that decadal-scale variations of near-surface wind are probably determined by internal decadal ocean–atmosphere oscillations, rather than by vegetation growth and/or urbanization as hypothesized previously. The strengthening has increased potential wind energy by 17 ± 2% for 2010 to 2017, boosting the US wind power capacity factor by ~2.5% and explains half the increase in the US wind capacity factor since 2010. In the longer term, the use of ocean–atmosphere oscillations to anticipate future wind speeds could allow optimization of turbines for expected speeds during their productive life spans. Wind speeds have reduced globally over land since the 1980s. In situ data show that this reversed around 2010, with natural ocean–atmosphere variability thought to drive the wind speed changes, as well as a 17% increase in potential wind energy for 2010–2017 and a boosted wind power capacity factor.

Abstract:By 2030 Austria aims to meet 100% of its electricity demand from domestic renewable sources, with most of the additional generation coming from wind and solar energy. Apart from the benefit of reducing CO2 emissions and, potentially, system cost, wind power is associated with negative impacts at the local level, such as interference with landscape aesthetics. Some of these impacts might be avoided by using alternative renewable energy technologies. Thus, we quantify the opportunity cost of wind power versus its best feasible alternative solar photovoltaics, using the power system model medea. Our findings suggest that the cost of undisturbed landscapes is considerable, particularly when solar PV is mainly realized on roof-tops. Under a wide range of assumptions, the opportunity cost of wind power is high enough to allow for significant compensation of the ones affected by local, negative wind turbine externalities.

Abstract:The global drive to produce low-carbon energy has resulted in an unprecedented deployment of onshore wind turbines, representing a significant land use change for wind energy generation with uncertain consequences for local climatic conditions and the regulation of ecosystem processes. Here, we present high-resolution data from a wind farm collected during operational and idle periods that shows the wind farm affected several measures of ground-level climate. Specifically, we discovered that operational wind turbines raised air temperature by 0.18 °C and absolute humidity (AH) by 0.03 g m−3 during the night, and increased the variability in air, surface and soil temperature throughout the diurnal cycle. Further, the microclimatic influence of turbines on air temperature and AH decreased logarithmically with distance from the nearest turbine. These effects on ground-level microclimate, including soil temperature, have uncertain implications for biogeochemical processes and ecosystem carbon cycling, including soil carbon stocks. Consequently, understanding needs to be improved to determine the overall carbon balance of wind energy.

Estimating the Impact of Wind Generation in the UK

Abstract:This paper studies the impact of wind generation on market prices and system costs in the UK between 2013 and 2014. The wider effects and implications of wind generation is of direct relevance and importance to policy makers, as well as the grid operator and market traders. We compare electricity generation from Coal, Gas and wind, on both the wholesale and imbalance market. We calculate the system cost of wind generation (government subsidies and curtailment costs) and the total energy costs. For the first time in the UK, we calculate the Merit Order Effect on spot price due to the wind component and show a $1.67\%$ price decrease for every percentage point of wind generation (compared to the ``zero-wind'' price). The net result of total costs and price savings is roughly zero (slight positive gain). We also consider the effect of not having either an onshore or an offshore wind component. We show that the Merit-Order Effect savings are heavily reduced, leading to an outgoing cost of wind generation in both cases. It is therefore important to have a significant total percentage of wind generation, from both onshore and offshore farms.
The overlooked threat of land take from wind energy infrastructures: Quantification, drivers and policy gaps

Abstract:Wind harnessing is a fast-developing and cost-effective Renewable Energy Source, but the land impacts of wind power stations are often overlooked or underestimated. We digitized land take, i.e., the generation of artificial land, derived from 90 wind power stations in Greece constructed between 2002 and 2020 (1.2 GW). We found substantial land take impacts of 7729 m2/MW (3.5 m2/MWh) of new artificial land, 148 m/MW of new roads and 174 m/MW of widened roads on average. Models showed that the number and size of wind turbines, the absence of other existing infrastructures and the elevational difference across new access roads increased artificial land generation. The elevational difference across new and widened access roads also increased their length. New wind power stations in Greece are planned to be installed at higher elevations and in terrains facing higher risks for soil erosion and soil biodiversity. The general tendency in the European Union is to sit fewer wind power stations in mountainous and forested land. Still, this pattern is inversed in several countries, particularly in Southern Europe. After screening 29 policy and legal documents, we found that land take is indirectly inferred in the global policy but more directly in the European policy through five non-legally binding documents and three Directives. However, the current European energy policies seem to conflict with nature conservation policies, risking land take acceleration. The study provides insights for reducing land take when planning and constructing wind power stations. We underline the need for better quantification of land take and its integration in the complex process of sustainable spatial planning of investments.
The impact of onshore wind farms on ecological corridors in Ningbo, China

Abstract:Under the background of the energy transition, the ecosystems are threatened by the rapid expansion of renewable power plants, especially wind turbines with enormous sizes. While the potential ecological influence near wind farms has not been extensively studied. In the process of wind farm site selection, there is no uniform methodology to assess the ecological impact on the local ecosystem. This paper proposed a research framework to quantify the impacts on ecological corridors under the influence of wind farms. Taking five wind farms in Ningbo Peninsula as cases, the geographical data from Landsat 8, NDVI, DEM, and wind turbine data from Vortex were selected from 2010 to 2020. The ecological sources and resistance surfaces were analyzed with and without wind farms under least-cost distance and least-cost path models. The results revealed that wind farms could increase the migration resistance that prevents the species' ecological corridors, and change the number and routes of main ecological corridors. Additionally, the cumulative resistance value positively correlated with the distance between ecological sources. Through GIS spatial quantification assessment, this paper helps balance wind energy development and regional ecological security and provides scientific and orderly planning suggestions for the healthy development of the regional ecological network.

Abstract:For policymakers, an important long-run question related to the development of renewable industries is how government policies affect decisions regarding the scrapping or upgrading of existing assets. This paper develops a dynamic structural econometric model of wind turbine owners' decisions about whether and when to add new turbines to a pre-existing stock, scrap an existing turbine, or replace old turbines with newer versions (i.e., upgrade). We apply our model to owner-level panel data for Denmark over the period 1980-2011 to estimate the underlying profit structure for small wind producers (who constitute the vast majority of turbine owners in the Danish wind industry during this time period), and evaluate the impact of technology and government policy on wind industry development. Our structural econometric model explicitly takes into account the dynamics and interdependence of shutdown and upgrade decisions, and generates parameter estimates with direct economic interpretations. Results from the model indicate that the growth and development of the Danish wind industry were driven primarily by government policies as opposed to technological improvements. We use the parameter estimates to simulate counterfactual policy scenarios in order to analyze the relative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Danish feed-in-tariff and replacement certificate programs. Results show that both of these policies significantly impacted the timing of shutdown and upgrade decisions made by small wind producers and accelerated the development of the wind industry in Denmark. We also find that when compared with the feed-in-tariff; a declining feed-in-tariff; and the replacement certificate program and the feed-in-tariff combined, the replacement certificate program was the most cost-effective policy both for increasing payoffs of small wind producers and also for decreasing carbon emissions.
Measuring the value of window views using real estate big data and computer vision: A case study in Wuhan, China

Abstract:Window views significantly influence residential quality and real estate value, particularly in high-rise residential buildings. Previous studies have predominantly focused on water and green views, resulting in a lack of clarity regarding the influence of other types of views on house prices. In this study, we quantified and analyzed the impacts of 9 window view elements, including sky, high-rise buildings, low-rise buildings, trees, grass, water, hard ground, roads, and barren land, on housing prices using online real estate images and computer vision techniques. Focusing on high-rise buildings constructed in the past five years, our findings, based on spatial hedonic pricing models, reveal that an increased proportion of water views through windows has a significant positive effect on property prices. Conversely, the presence of grass and hard ground is associated with significant negative impacts. This study examines the influence of various window view elements on apartment prices, offering valuable insights for urban planning, architectural design, and property development.

Abstract:Offshore wind farms have developed rapidly in Jiangsu Province, China, over the last decade. The existence of offshore wind turbines will inevitably impact hydrological and sedimentary environments. In this paper, a digital elevation model (DEM) of the intertidal sandbank in southern Jiangsu Province from 2018 to 2020 was constructed based on the improved remote sensing waterline method. On this basis, the stability of the sandbank was analysed, and combined with the hypothetical sandbank surface discrimination method (HSSDM), the erosional/depositional influences of wind turbine construction on topography were quantitatively analysed. The results show that due to the frequent oscillations of the tidal channels, only 35.03% of the study area has a stable topography, and more than 90% of the wind turbines in all years have a balanced impact on the intensity of topographic change, and all see a small reduction in their impact in the following year. The remaining wind turbines with erosional/depositional impacts are mainly located in areas with unstable topography, but the overall impact of all wind turbines is balanced in 2018–2020. The impact of wind turbines on topography is both erosional and depositional, but the overall intensity of the impact is not significant. This study demonstrates the quantitative effects of wind turbine construction on topography and provides some help for wind turbine construction site selection and monitoring after turbine completion.
