Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a novel microbial auto-aggregate, and a promising technology for wastewater treatment. Filamentous/fungal granules (FAG) are often observed in AGS systems, which is generally associated with operation failure and considered a significant obstacle to AGS’ application. This study presents a comprehensive and updated review on several key aspects of FAG. First, various conditions pertaining to their formation are systematically analyzed, including the type of substrates, organic loading rate (OLR), nutrients level, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH. The species of simple organics likely do not determine AGS’ morphology, but extremely low or high OLR should be applied with caution. Similarly, a moderate carbon to nitrogen/phosphorus ratio is recommended, as well as sufficient buffer capacities to maintain an alkaline environment. In addition, a distinctive feast/famine regime is crucial in preventing FAG occurrence, which could be undermined by low temperature, insufficient oxygen supply and particulate organics in the feed. Possible measures to mitigate and reverse FAG occurrence are then introduced, and tools to characterize its physical, chemical, biological and genetic properties outlined. The unique advantages of FAG are further proposed. In addition to fast formation and facilitating early granulation, FAG could remain stable and functional over months, withstand extreme pH and salinity, and degrade pollutants recalcitrant to bacterial activities. Finally, spent FAG could be reused and valorized as biosorbents and biochar. This review hopes to supply engineers with useful information to control FAG in AGS systems, meanwhile open up new directions for fundamental research in this field.
