Abstract:Nearly a century after Einstein first predicted the existence of gravitational waves, a global network of earth-based gravitational wave observatories is seeking to directly detect this faint radiation using precision laser interferometry. Photon shot noise, due to the quantum nature of light, imposes a fundamental limit on the attometer level sensitivity of the kilometer-scale Michelson interferometers deployed for this task. Here we inject squeezed states to improve the performance of one of the detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) beyond the quantum noise limit, most notably in the frequency region down to 150 Hz, critically important for several astrophysical sources, with no deterioration of performance observed at any frequency. With the injection of squeezed states, this LIGO detector demonstrated the best broadband sensitivity to gravitational waves ever achieved, with important implications for observing the gravitational wave Uni- verse with unprecedented sensitivity.

Abstract:Gravitational-wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), are sensitive to very small changes in the displacement of spacetime. In a recent work, Wenxuan Jia and colleagues have shown that a reduction in the noise level of a LIGO detector three decibels below the standard quantum limit (SQL) can be achieved for a certain frequency range by using frequency-independent squeezed vacuum states and a filter cavity. The authors used the combination of quantum squeezed states with a detuned and overcoupled Fabry–Pérot cavity, which converts the frequency-independent states from a squeezer to the frequency-dependent states, such that the noise can be reduced for a broader frequency range. These squeezed states (or non-classical light states) represent quantum states of light with correlation between photon pairs. In these states it is possible to reduce one form of noise (imprecision noise) at the expense of the other (quantum back action noise) to a limit allowed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The two noise types are conjugate variables such that uncertainty in one noise increases while the other noise is measured precisely. The filter cavity used by the authors rotates the squeezed states depending on their frequency and reduces the noise. They have subtracted the measurements with unsqueezed states from the squeezed ones in their analysis and the results clearly show that the squeezed quantum noise surpasses the SQL between 35 and 75 Hz by a maximum of 3 dB.

Abstract:The first detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2015 launched the era of gravitational wave astronomy. The quest for gravitational wave signals from objects that are fainter or farther away impels technological advances to realize ever more sensitive detectors. Since 2019, one advanced technique, the injection of squeezed states of light is being used to improve the shot noise limit to the sensitivity of the Advanced LIGO detectors, at frequencies above $\sim 50$ Hz. Below this frequency, quantum back action, in the form of radiation pressure induced motion of the mirrors, degrades the sensitivity. To simultaneously reduce shot noise at high frequencies and quantum radiation pressure noise at low frequencies requires a quantum noise filter cavity with low optical losses to rotate the squeezed quadrature as a function of frequency. We report on the observation of frequency-dependent squeezed quadrature rotation with rotation frequency of 30Hz, using a 16m long filter cavity. A novel control scheme is developed for this frequency-dependent squeezed vacuum source, and the results presented here demonstrate that a low-loss filter cavity can achieve the squeezed quadrature rotation necessary for the next planned upgrade to Advanced LIGO, known as "A+."

Abstract:Ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors are highly precise sensors for weak forces, limited in sensitivity across their detection band by quantum fluctuations of light. Current and future instruments address this limitation by injecting frequency-dependent squeezed vacuum into the detection port, utilizing narrow-band, low-loss optical cavities for optimal rotation of the squeezing ellipse at each signal frequency. This study introduces a novel scheme employing the principles of quantum teleportation and entangled states of light. It allows achieving broadband suppression of quantum noise in detuned signal recycled-Fabry-Perot--Michelson interferometers, which is the baseline design of the low-frequency detector within the Einstein Telescope xylophone detector, without requiring additional filter cavities or modifications to the core optics of the main interferometer.

Abstract:The Heisenberg uncertainty principle dictates that the position and momentum of an object cannot be simultaneously measured with arbitrary precision, giving rise to an apparent limitation known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). Gravitational-wave detectors use photons to continuously measure the positions of freely falling mirrors and so are affected by the SQL. We investigated the performance of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) after the experimental realization of frequency-dependent squeezing designed to surpass the SQL. For the LIGO Livingston detector, we found that the upgrade reduces quantum noise below the SQL by a maximum of three decibels between 35 and 75 hertz while achieving a broadband sensitivity improvement, increasing the overall detector sensitivity during astrophysical observations.

Squeezing atomic $p$-orbital condensates for detecting gravitational waves

Abstract:Precision gravitational wave measurement transforms research beyond general relativity and cosmology. Advances are made by applying quantum enhanced interferometry into the LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA detectors. Here, we develop an atomic sensor that employs a $p$-orbital Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice to project gravitational wave signals into an orbital squeezed state. This entangled state couples linearly to the spacetime distortion signals received via a Michelson interferometer. Simulation data show that this sensor improves sensitivity over LIGO's quantum noise by approximately one order of magnitude and detection volume by $\sim 10^3$ in key frequency regimes. Additionally, it reduces the required laser power by five orders of magnitude. These results suggest that atomic orbital squeezing offers a compelling alternative to conventional techniques, offering a qualitatively different avenue for gravitational wave-based detection of dark matter, black holes, and the equation of state in neutron stars.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics places noise limits and sensitivity restrictions on physical measurements. The balance between unwanted backaction and the precision of optical measurements imposes a standard quantum limit (SQL) on interferometric systems. In order to realize a sensitivity below the SQL, it is necessary to leverage a backaction evading measurement technique, reduce thermal noise to below the level of backaction, and exploit cancellations of any excess noise contributions at the detector. Many proof of principle experiments have been performed, but only recently has an experiment achieved sensitivity below the SQL. In this work, we extend that initial demonstration and realize sub-SQL sensitivity nearly two times better than previous measurements, and with an architecture applicable to interferometric gravitational wave detectors. In fact, this technique is directly applicable to Advanced LIGO, which could observe similar effects with a detuned signal recycling cavity. We measure a total sensitivity below the SQL by 2.8 dB, corresponding to a reduction in the noise power by 72±5.1% below the quantum limit. Through the use of a detuned cavity and the optical spring effect, this noise reduction is tunable, allowing us to choose the desired range of frequencies that fall below the SQL. Abstract:We present the generation and detection of squeezed light in the 2 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ wavelength region. This experiment is a crucial step in realising the quantum noise reduction techniques that will be required for future generations of gravitational-wave detectors. Squeezed vacuum is generated via degenerate optical parametric oscillation from a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal, in a dual resonant cavity. The experiment uses a frequency stabilised 1984 nm thulium fibre laser, and squeezing is detected using balanced homodyne detection with extended InGaAs photodiodes. We have measured $4.0 \pm 0.1$ dB of squeezing and $10.5 \pm 0.5$ dB of anti-squeezing relative to the shot noise level in the audio frequency band, limited by photodiode quantum efficiency. The inferred squeezing level directly after the optical parametric oscillator, after accounting for known losses and phase noise, is 10.7 dB.

Abstract:The detection of gravitational waves has ushered in a new era of observing the universe. Quantum resource advantages offer significant enhancements to the sensitivity of gravitational wave observatories. While squeezed states for ground-based gravitational wave detection have received marked attention, the generation of squeezed states suitable for mid-to-low-frequency detection has remained unexplored. To address the gap in squeezed state optical fields at ultra-low frequencies, we report on the first direct observation of a squeezed vacuum field until Fourier frequency of 4 millihertz with the quantum noise reduction of up to 8.0 dB, by the employment of a multiple noise suppression scheme. Our work provides quantum resources for future gravitational wave observatories, facilitating the development of quantum precision measurement.

Squeezed States of Light for Future Gravitational Wave Detectors at a Wavelength of 1550 nm

Abstract:The generation of strongly squeezed vacuum states of light is a key technology for future ground-based gravitational wave detectors (GWDs) to reach sensitivities beyond their quantum noise limit. For some proposed observatory designs, an operating laser wavelength of 1550 nm or around 2 μm is required to enable the use of cryogenically cooled silicon test masses for thermal noise reduction. Here, we present for the first time the direct measurement of up to 11.5 dB squeezing at 1550 nm over the complete detection bandwidth of future ground-based GWDs ranging from 10 kHz down to below 1 Hz. Furthermore, we directly observe a quantum shot-noise reduction of up to (13.5±0.1) dB at megahertz frequencies. This allows us to derive a precise constraint on the absolute quantum efficiency of the photodiode used for balanced homodyne detection. These results hold important insight regarding the quantum noise reduction efficiency in future GWDs, as well as for quantum information and cryptography, where low decoherence of nonclassical states of light is also of high relevance.

Abstract:Currently, the German/British gravitational wave detector GEO600 is being upgraded in course of the GEO-HF program. One part of this upgrade consists of the integration of a squeezed light laser to nonclassically improve the detection sensitivity at frequencies where the instrument is limited by shot noise. This has been achieved recently [1]. The permanent employment of squeezed light in gravitational wave observatories requires a long-term stability of the generated squeezed state. In this paper, we discuss an unwanted mechanism that can lead to a varying squeezing factor along with a changing phase of the squeezed field. We present an extension of the implemented coherent control scheme [2] that allowed an increase in the long-term stability of the GEO600 squeezed light laser. With it, a quantum noise reduction by more than 9 dB in the frequency band of 10 Hz - 10 kHz was observed over up to 20 hours with a duty cycle of more than 99%.

Abstract:Quantum noise will be the dominant noise source for the advanced laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors currently under construction. Squeezing-enhanced laser interferometers have been recently demonstrated as a viable technique to reduce quantum noise. We propose two new methods of generating an error signal for matching the longitudinal phase of squeezed vacuum states of light to the phase of the laser interferometer output field. Both provide a superior signal to the one used in previous demonstrations of squeezing applied to a gravitational-wave detector. We demonstrate that the new signals are less sensitive to misalignments and higher order modes, and result in an improved stability of the squeezing level. The new signals also offer the potential of reducing the overall rms phase noise and optical losses, each of which would contribute to achieving a higher level of squeezing. The new error signals are a pivotal development towards realizing the goal of 6 dB and more of squeezing in advanced detectors and beyond.

Abstract:All gravitational-wave observatories (GWOs) have been using the laser wavelength of 1064 nm. Ultra-stable laser devices are at the sites of GEO 600, Kagra, LIGO and Virgo. Since 2019, not only GEO 600 but also LIGO and Virgo have been using separate devices for squeezing the uncertainty of the light, so-called squeeze lasers. The sensitivities of future GWOs will strongly gain from reducing the thermal noise of the suspended mirrors, which involves shifting the wavelength into the 2 $\mu$m region. Our work aims for reusing the existing high-performance lasers at 1064 nm. Here, we report the realisation of a squeeze laser at 2128 nm that uses ultra-stable pump light at 1064 nm. We achieve the direct observation of 7.2 dB of squeezing, as the first step, at MHz sideband frequencies. The squeeze factor achieved is mainly limited by the photodiode's quantum efficiency, which we estimated to (92$\pm$3)%. Reaching larger squeeze factors seems feasible, also in the required audio and sub-audio sideband, provided photo diodes with sufficiently low dark noise will be available. Our result promotes 2128 nm as the new, cost-efficient wavelength of GWOs.

Amplification of gravitational waves signal in Michelson coherent-squeezed interferometer

Abstract:Gravitational waves reaching a Michelson interferometer are expected to induce a very small change in the length of its arms causing a phase shift between them, but it is very difficult to observe the extremely small phase shift signals produced. In the present letter we show that the gravitational waves signal could be amplified by orders of magnitude by using very special conditions for a coherent-squeezed Michelson interferometer in which the coherent state enters one port of the interferometer and the squeezed vacuum enters in the other port. We treat the case where without the gravitational induced phase shift the very strong coherent state goes out of one output port while the squeezed vacuum goes out the other output port (the ``dark'' port). While the phase shift produced by the gravitation waves does not give any significant change in the strong coherent output, the light intensity in the ``dark'' port is amplified with decreased fluctuations as the squeezing increases.

Abstract:Following a major upgrade, the two advanced detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) held their first observation run between September 2015 and January 2016.The product of observable volume and measurement time exceeded that of all previous runs within the first 16 days of coincident observation.On September 14th, 2015 the Advanced LIGO detectors observed the transient gravitational-wave signal GW150914, determined to be the coalescence of two black holes, launching the era of gravitational-wave astronomy.We present the main features of the detectors that enabled this observation.At its core Advanced LIGO is a multi-kilometer long Michelson interferometer employing optical resonators to enhance its sensitivity.Four very pure and homogeneous fused silica optics with excellent figure quality serve as the test masses.The displacement produced by the event GW150914 was one 200th of a proton radius.It was observed with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 24 in coincidence by the two detectors.At full sensitivity, the Advanced LIGO detectors are designed to deliver another factor of three improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio for binary black hole systems similar in masses to GW150914.

Abstract:Photon shot noise, arising from the quantum-mechanical nature of the light, currently limits the sensitivity of all the gravitational wave observatories at frequencies above one kilohertz. We report a successful application of squeezed vacuum states of light at the GEO\,600 observatory and demonstrate for the first time a reduction of quantum noise up to $6.03 \pm 0.02$ dB in a kilometer-scale interferometer. This is equivalent at high frequencies to increasing the laser power circulating in the interferometer by a factor of four. Achieving this milestone, a key goal for the upgrades of the advanced detectors, required a better understanding of the noise sources and losses, and implementation of robust control schemes to mitigate their contributions. In particular, we address the optical losses from beam propagation, phase noise from the squeezing ellipse, and backscattered light from the squeezed light source. The expertise gained from this work carried out at GEO 600 provides insight towards the implementation of 10 dB of squeezing envisioned for third-generation gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract:In the coming years, the gravitational-wave community will be optimizing detector performance to target a variety of astrophysical sources which make competing demands on detector sensitivity in different frequency bands. In this paper we describe a number of technologies that are being developed as anticipated upgrades to the Advanced LIGO detectors and quantify the potential sensitivity improvement they offer. Specifically, we consider squeezed light injection for the reduction of quantum noise, detector design and materials changes which mitigate thermal noise and mirrors with significantly increased mass. We explore how each of these technologies impacts the detection of the most promising gravitational-wave sources and suggest an effective progression of upgrades which culminates in a twofold improvement in broadband sensitivity.
