Abstract:Thermal management of textiles requires local microclimate control over heat and wet dissipation to create a comfortable thermal-wet environment at the interface of the human body and clothing. Herein, we design a fabric capable of both sweat- and cooling-management using a knitted fabric featuring a bilayer structure consisting of hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate and hydrophilic cellulose fibers to simultaneously achieve high infrared (IR) transmittance and good thermal-wet comfort. The IR transmission of this cooling textile increased by ~ twofold in the dry state and ~ eightfold in the wet state compared to conventional cotton fabric. When the porosity changes from 10 to 47% with the comparison of conventional cotton fabric and our cooling textile, the heat flux is increased from 74.4 to 152.3 W/cm2. The cooling effect of the cooling fabric is 105% greater than that of commercial cotton fabric, which displays a better thermal management capacity for personal cooling. This bilayer design controls fast moisture transfer from inside out and provides thermal management, demonstrating high impact not only for garments, but also for other systems requiring heat regulation, such as buildings, which could mitigate energy demand and ultimately contribute to the relief of global energy and climate issues.

Abstract:Personal thermal management, especially heating up the space around human body, consumes substantial global resources. While traditional methods (such as room heaters) for personal heating are mostly energy-wasting and eco-unfriendly, ultra-thin textile with localized heating ability has recently gained significant attention. To date, passive radiative heating textiles are designed exclusively for indoor scenario and the coloration remains challenging. Herein, the authors report a colored nanophotonic structure textile (similar to 16 mu m thickness) with localized heating ability for both indoor and outdoor environments: (a) solar heating by selectively absorbing sunlight and converting it into heat (maximum absorbance similar to 50%) and (b) passive heating by suppressing radiative heat loss with a low-emissivity outer surface (infrared emissivity similar to 10%). This textile enables a 3.8 degrees C temperature enhancement of the artificial skin in indoor environment and a 6.3 degrees C temperature enhancement under sunlight compared with 2-mm-thick black sweatshirt, as well as excellent aesthetics, wearability and manufacturability. This colored textile with simultaneous solar and passive heating abilities is effective for energy-saving personal thermal management, and paves an innovative way to the sustainable development.

Abstract:Radiative cooling textiles hold promise for achieving personal thermal comfort under increasing global temperature. However, urban areas have heat island effects that largely diminish the effectiveness of cooling textiles as wearable fabrics because they absorb emitted radiation from the ground and nearby buildings. We developed a mid-infrared spectrally selective hierarchical fabric (SSHF) with emissivity greatly dominant in the atmospheric transmission window through molecular design, minimizing the net heat gain from the surroundings. The SSHF features a high solar spectrum reflectivity of 0.97 owing to strong Mie scattering from the nano-micro hybrid fibrous structure. The SSHF is 2.3°C cooler than a solar-reflecting broadband emitter when placed vertically in simulated outdoor urban scenarios during the day and also has excellent wearable properties.

Abstract:Personal thermal management is attracting growing attention due to the aggravation of climate anomalies and the increasing emphasis on physical health. Passive radiative heating textiles offer a promising solution to improve thermal comfort without energy consumption; however, using woven cloth to achieve passive heating while still exhibiting an aesthetic appearance remains a problem. Here, a colored textile based on woven cloth that features superior passive radiative heating capability without sacrificing aesthetics is demonstrated. By coating infrared transparent inorganic nanoparticles on MXene-decorated cotton, the textile achieves selectively visible reflectance for desired color, high near-infrared absorptivity, and low mid-infrared emissivity for passive heating management, as well as uniformly distributed nanopores for wearability. Thermal tests on simulated skin and real human bodies show considerable temperature increases compared to pure cottons. Owing to its easy manufacturing process and remarkable spectral engineering capability, this textile can be further applied to energy conservation and multi-spectral camouflage.

Zeng et al . developed a multilayer metafabric composed of a titanium oxide polylactic acid composite laminated with a polytetrafluoroethylene layer. Abstract:The development of smart textiles with thermal/moisture regulation is crucial for outdoor activities and healthcare applications. However, incorporating dynamic adaptive thermal management into conventional fabrics to provide consistent comfort remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the ingenious stomata of plant leaves, a novel Janus-type cotton fabric is fabricated by covalently linking shape memory polymer (SMP) on the surfaces of cotton fibers via the combination of the “grafting from” strategy and the “mist polymerization” methodology. This unique coating induces yarns to dynamically twist in response to temperature, switching the pore apertures in the fabric and allowing for adaptive adjustment of both heat dissipation capability and moisture permeability. The resulting fabrics provide effective thermal insulation at low temperatures, while demonstrating an enhanced cooling effect at high temperatures. Meanwhile, the asymmetrical distribution of SMP across the fabric enables unidirectional water transport, improving sweat removal and cooling. Additionally, the excellent biocompatibility and fabric flexibility allow for comfortable garment fabrication. This work provides novel insights into the field of self-adaptive thermal regulation, demonstrating promising potential for smart textile applications.

Abstract:This study presents a dual‐cooling fabric with thermal and moisture comfort, integrating high thermal conductivity and evaporative cooling performance to meet the static and dynamic cooling needs of individuals. It achieves outward heat conduction, moisture management, and mechanical durability, ultimately reducing human body temperature by 3.7 °C, providing new insight into summer human well‐being and building energy reduction. Personal thermal management textiles have garnered a lot of attention because they can efficiently preserve the body's thermal and moisture comfort while saving energy consumption. Nonetheless, conduction cooling‐based textile research is scarce and frequently encounters obstacles like overlooking through‐plane heat conduction, moisture management, and durability assurance. Here, a dual‐cooling textile (DCT) that combines high‐efficiency heat dissipation and sweat evaporation with a 3D thermal conductive network and Janus wetting structure is demonstrated. The DCT achieves notable in‐plane and through‐plane thermal conductivity (8.57 and 0.70 W m−1 K−1), along with practical mechanical qualities (tensile fracture strength of 65 MPa), under the influence of the 3D multistage thermal conduction network. Additionally, the DCT benefits from its Janus wetting structure, exhibiting unidirectional moisture‐wicking capability (transport index of 1081%) and fast water evaporation performance (0.34 g h−1). Rapid heat dissipation and sweat evaporation are advantageous features for the cooling of the human body in both static and dynamic situations. Compared to cotton fabric, DCT can lower the temperature by up to 3.7 °C. This strategy provides a fresh perspective on the development of advanced functional textiles for personalized cooling and energy savings in buildings.

Abstract:Outdoor heat stress poses a serious public health threat and curtails industrial labor supply and productivity, thus adversely impacting the wellness and economy of the entire society. With climate change, there will be more intense and frequent heat waves that further present a grand challenge for sustainability. However, an efficient and economical method that can provide localized outdoor cooling of the human body without intensive energy input is lacking. Here, a novel spectrally selective nanocomposite textile for radiative outdoor cooling using zinc oxide nanoparticle-embedded polyethylene is demonstrated. By reflecting more than 90% solar irradiance and selectively transmitting out human body thermal radiation, this textile can enable simulated skin to avoid overheating by 5-13 °C compared to normal textile like cotton under peak daylight condition. Owing to its superior passive cooling capability and compatibility with large-scale production, this radiative outdoor cooling textile is promising to widely benefit the sustainability of society in many aspects spanning from health to economy.

Abstract:Due to climate change, population increase, and the urban heat island effect (UHI), the demand for cooling energy, especially in urban areas, has increased and will further increase in the future. Technologies such as radiative cooling offer a sustainable and energy-free solution by using the wavelength ranges of the atmosphere that are transparent to electromagnetic radiation, the so-called atmospheric window (8–13 μm), to emit thermal radiation into the colder (3 K) outer space. Previous publications in the field of textile building cooling have focused on specific fiber structures and textile substrate materials as well as complex multi-layer constructions, which restrict the use for highly scaled outdoor applications. This paper describes the development of a novel substrate-independent coating with spectrally selective radiative properties. By adapting the coating parameters and combining low-emitting and solar-reflective particles, along with a matrix material emitting strongly in the mid-infrared range (MIR), substrate-independent cooling below ambient temperature is achieved. Moreover, the coating is designed to be easily applicable, with a low thickness, to ensure high flexibility and scalability, making it suitable for various applications such as membrane architecture, textile roofs, or tent construction. The results show a median daytime temperature reduction (7 a.m.–7 p.m.) of 2 °C below ambient temperature on a hot summer day.

Abstract:Fabrics are soft against the skin, flexible, easily accessible and able to wick away perspiration, to some extent for local private thermal management. In this review, we classify smart fabrics as passive thermal management fabrics and active thermal management fabrics based on the availability of outside energy consumption in the manipulation of heat generation and dissipation from the human body. The mechanism and research status of various thermal management fabrics are introduced in detail, and the article also analyses the advantages and disadvantages of various smart thermal management fabrics, achieving a better and more comprehensive comprehension of the current state of research on smart thermal management fabrics, which is quite an important reference guide for our future research. In addition, with the progress of science and technology, the social demand for fabrics has shifted from keeping warm to improving health and quality of life. E-textiles have potential value in areas such as remote health monitoring and life signal detection. New e-textiles are designed to mimic the skin, sense biological data and transmit information. At the same time, the ultra-moisturizing properties of the fabric's thermal management allow for applications beyond just the human body to energy. E-textiles hold great promise for energy harvesting and storage. The article also introduces the application of smart fabrics in life forms and energy harvesting. By combining electronic technology with textiles, e-textiles can be manufactured to promote human well-being and quality of life. Although smart textiles are equipped with more intelligent features, wearing comfort must be the first thing to be ensured in the multi-directional application of textiles. Eventually, we discuss the dares and prospects of smart thermal management fabric research.

Abstract:<p>A radiative cooling garment is proposed as a promising strategy for ordinary people to attain high thermal comfort indoors and outdoors. However, low production and poor cooling capability restrict its wide applications. Herein, a high‐performance fiber and its textile with pore and wrinkle structures are fabricated that consist of polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene oxide. This specific structure endows the fiber and textile with high IR absorbance/emissivity (90.97%) and sunlight reflectance (93.77%). Therefore, the hybrid porous PE fiber and textile show good cooling capabilities and avoid the human body overheating by 6.8 °C under direct solar irradiation. The inner temperature of the transparent house with a roof covered by the textile decreases by 20.3 and 12.5 °C compared to the states of no extra cover and cotton cover, respectively. Apart from that, the results of the simulating and real human body measurements demonstrate that the porous PE textile enables the human body to acquire the same thermal comfort as the bare state. More importantly, the porous PE fiber and textile are superlight, flexible, moisture‐permeable, and waterproof, and meanwhile, have excellent tensile strength and UV protection properties. The good comprehensive performance indicates that the textile is appealing for fabricating summer clothes.</p>

Rendering passive radiative cooling capability to cotton textile by an alginate/CaCO3 coating via synergistic light manipulation and high water permeation

Abstract:Personal thermal management textiles that put focus on cooling human body in hot environment attracts intense research interests since the urgent requirement for adjusting human activity to save energy even when we face extreme weather more frequently. Textiles produced from petrol-based fibers have shown their effective passive cooling effects. However, regeneratable passive cooling textiles are still lacking. In this study, we report a cotton-based effective passive cooling textile by interfacial engineering by alginate modification and in-situ generated CaCO3 particles. The Alg/CaCO3-cotton fabrics not only effectively cool the underlining surface via high reflectivity over solar spectra (∼90%) and high mid-infrared emissivity (0.97) in the atmospheric window, but also present enhanced water evaporation and water vapor permeation capabilities (36.51% higher water vapor transmission rate than pristine cotton fabric). The textile avoids overheating by 5.4 °C under direct solar irradiation, comparable to the performance of the reported petrol-based textile. The Alg/CaCO3-cotton also presents high washing stability, UV protection properties, faster drying and fire resistance properties. The surface engineering process is compatible with large-scale production. This work provides enlightening insights to regeneratable and wearable passive cooling materials and sheds light on the working mechanism of personal thermal management materials.

Abstract:Radiative cooling in textiles is one of the important factors enabling cooling of the human body for thermal comfort. In particular, under an intense sunlight environment such as that experienced with outdoor exercise and sports activities, high near-infrared (NIR) reflectance to block sunlight energy influx along with high IR transmittance in textiles for substantial thermal emission from the human body would be highly desirable. This investigation demonstrates that a nanoscale geometric control of textile structure alone, instead of complicated introduction of specialty polymer materials and composites, can enable such desirable NIR and IR optical properties in textiles. A diameter-dependent Mie scattering event in fibers and associated optical and thermal behavior were simulated in relation to a nonwoven, nanomesh textile. As an example, a nanomesh structure made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) electrospun fibers with ∼600 nm average diameter was examined, which exhibited a significant radiative cooling performance with over 90% solar and NIR reflectance to profoundly block the sunlight energy influx as well as ∼50% IR transmittance for human body radiative heat dissipation. An extraordinary cooling effect, as much as 12 °C, was obtained on a simulated skin compared to the normal textile fabric materials. Such a powerful radiative cooling performance together with IR transmitting capability by the nanomesh textile offers a way to efficiently manage sunlight radiation energy to make persons, devices, and transport vehicles cooler and help to save energy in an outdoor sunlight environment as well as indoor conditions.

Abstract:Global warming and energy crises severely limit the ability of human civilization to develop along a sustainable path. Increasing renewable energy sources and decreasing energy consumption are fundamental steps to achieve sustainability. Technological innovations that allow energy-saving behaviour can support sustainable development pathways. Energy-saving fabrics with a superior cooling effect and satisfactory wearability properties provide a novel way of saving the energy used by indoor cooling systems. Here, we report the large-scale extrusion of uniform and continuous nanoporous polyethylene (nanoPE) microfibres with cotton-like softness for industrial fabric production. The nanopores embedded in the fibre effectively scatter visible light to make it opaque without compromising the mid-infrared transparency. Moreover, using industrial machines, the nanoPE microfibres are utilized to mass produce fabrics. Compared with commercial cotton fabric of the same thickness, the nanoPE fabric exhibits a great cooling power, lowering the human skin temperature by 2.3 °C, which corresponds to a greater than 20% saving on indoor cooling energy. Besides the superior cooling effect, the nanoPE fabric also displays impressive wearability and durability. As a result, nanoPE microfibres represent basic building blocks to revolutionize fabrics for human body cooling and pave an innovative way to sustainable energy.

Abstract:Thermal management through personal heating and cooling is a strategy by which to expand indoor temperature setpoint range for large energy saving. We show that nanoporous polyethylene (nanoPE) is transparent to mid-infrared human body radiation but opaque to visible light because of the pore size distribution (50 to 1000 nanometers). We processed the material to develop a textile that promotes effective radiative cooling while still having sufficient air permeability, water-wicking rate, and mechanical strength for wearability. We developed a device to simulate skin temperature that shows temperatures 2.7° and 2.0°C lower when covered with nanoPE cloth and with processed nanoPE cloth, respectively, than when covered with cotton. Our processed nanoPE is an effective and scalable textile for personal thermal management.

Abstract:As global temperatures rise due to anthropogenic climate change, thermal comfort becomes an increasingly critical area of research. While most buildings are equipped to cool and heat their interiors, this process is very energy intensive; a smarter approach is to enable personal thermal management using clothing and textiles. In particular, we are interested in the ability to use textiles and clothing to cool bodies in extreme heat, both to maintain comfort and prevent deaths in urban deserts due to heat stroke. One innovative category in this realm is radiative coolers—surfaces adept at manipulating light to passively regulate temperature. These coolers achieve sub-ambient surface temperatures by selectively reflecting or refracting sunlight wavelengths (200nm-2.5μm) while emitting infrared light (8-13μm). This unique capability allows them to maintain cooler temperatures, even when exposed to direct sunlight and the open sky. Coatings facilitating this cooling action typically consist of a porous media filled with refractive gaps, requiring specific substrates and custom production processes, thereby limiting their applications. Furthermore, the necessity of low light transmission presents issues in creating fabrics that radiatively cool while still retaining high breathability and durability. In this study we present a method whereby an optically active coating comprised of a mixture of CaCO 3 and BaSO 4 microcrystals was applied to multiple fabric substrates to create a radiative cooler. Through the use of photoinitiated chemical vapor deposition (pICVD), a 5 μm thick layer of a hydrophilic polymer polyhydroxyethyleneacrylate (pHEA) was deposited on the fabric substrate. Subsequently, through serial immersion in solutions containing Ca and Ba ions and solutions containing CO 3 and SO 4 ions, inorganic microcrystals were grown directly on the surface of the fabric. These microcrystals formed with a large polydispersity, endowing the coating with excellent reflective properties in the solar spectrum. Mie scattering calculations confirmed that the CaCO 3 and BaSO 4 microcrystals were primarily responsible for scattering. Further simulations using finite difference time domain software revealed, surprisingly, that surface-immobilized crystals provided the highest reflection efficiency, indicating that composite fibers with embedded particles are not as efficient. Upon outdoor testing, the device showed a cooling ability of 8°C compared to an uncoated fabric, achieving a maximum cooling of 4°C below ambient temperature. Washing and durability testing of the coating found no degradation in the material's performance, affirming its resilience and long-term effectiveness.

Abstract:Textiles with thermal/moisture managing functions are of high interest. However, making the textile sensitive to the surrounding environment is still challenging. Herein, a multimodal smart fabric is developed by stitching together the Ag coated thermal-humidity sensitive thermoplastic polyurethane (Ag-THSPU) and the hybrid of polyvinylidene fluoride and polyurethane (PU-PVDF). The porous PU-PVDF layer is used for solar reflection, infrared emissivity, and water resistance. The Ag-THSPU layer is designed for regulating thermal reflection, sweat evaporation as well as convection. In cold and dry state, the Ag domains are densely packed covering the crystalline polyurethane matrix, featuring low water transmission (102.74 g m-2·24 h-1), high thermal reflection and 2.4 °C warmer than with cotton fabric. In the hot and humid state, the THSPU layer is swollen by sweat and expands in area, resulting in the formation of micro-hook faces where the Ag domains spread apart to promote sweat evaporation (2084.88 g/m-2·24 h-1), thermal radiation and convection, offering 2.5 °C cooler than with cotton fabric. The strategy reported here opens a new door for the development of adaptive textiles in demanding situations.
