Abstract:Let (W,S) be any Coxeter system and let w↦w⁎ be an involution of W which preserves the set of simple generators S. Lusztig and Vogan have shown that the corresponding set of twisted involutions (i.e., elements w∈W with w−1=w⁎) naturally generates a module of the Hecke algebra of (W,S) with two distinguished bases. The transition matrix between these bases defines a family of polynomials Py,wσ which one can view as a “twisted” analogue of the much-studied family of Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials of (W,S). The polynomials Py,wσ can have negative coefficients, but display several conjectural positivity properties of interest, which parallel positivity properties of the Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials. This paper reports on some calculations which verify four such positivity conjectures in several finite cases of interest, in particular for the non-crystallographic Coxeter systems of types H3 and H4.

Abstract:We introduce deformations of Kazhdan-Lusztig elements and specialised nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, both of which form a distinguished basis of the polynomial representation of a maximal parabolic subalgebra of the Hecke algebra. We give explicit integral formula for these polynomials, and explicitly describe the transition matrices between classes of polynomials. We further develop a combinatorial interpretation of homogeneous evaluations using an expansion in terms of Schubert polynomials in the deformation parameters.

Abstract:We discuss a practical algorithm to compute parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. As an application we compute Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials which are needed to evaluate a character formula for reductive groups due to Lusztig. Some coefficients of these polynomials have interesting interpretations for certain finite groups. We find examples of finite dimensional modules for finite groups with much higher dimensional first cohomology group than in all previously known cases. Some of these examples lead to the construction of finite groups with many maximal subgroups, contradicting an old conjecture by G.~E.~Wall.

Abstract:We extend the techniques in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2209.08865" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.08865">arXiv:2209.08865</a>(1) to the non-simply-laced situation, and calculate explicit special values of parabolic affine inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for subregular nilpotent orbits. We thus obtain explicit character formulas for certain irreducible representations of affine Lie algebras. As particular cases, we compute characters of simple vertex algebras $V_{k}(\mathfrak{g})$ for $k=-1,\ldots,-b$, where $b$ is the largest label of the highest short coroot $\theta^\vee$. Conjecturally, all ordinary modules over $V_{-b}(\mathfrak{g})$ are covered by our computations. As an application, we obtain the explicit formulas for flavoured Schur indices of rank one Argyres-Douglas 4d SCFTs with flavour symmetry $G_2$ and $B_3$. Our results are proved using the geometry of the Springer resolution. We identify the cell quotient of the anti-spherical module over $\widehat{W}$ corresponding to the subregular cell with a certain one-dimensional extension of a module defined by Lusztig. We describe the canonical basis in this module geometrically and present an explicit description of the corresponding objects in the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution. They correspond to irreducible objects in the heart of a certain $t$-structure that we describe using an equivariant version of the derived McKay correspondence.

Denominators in Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra via the Plancherel formula

Abstract:Let $\tilde{W}$ be an extended affine Weyl group, $\mathbf{H}$ be the corresponding affine Hecke algebra over the ring $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{q}^\frac{1}{2}, \mathbf{q}^{-\frac{1}{2}}]$, and $J$ be Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra, viewed as a based ring with basis $\{t_w\}$. Viewing $J$ as a subalgebra of the $(\mathbf{q}^{-\frac{1}{2}})$-adic completion of $\mathbf{H}$ via Lusztig's map $\phi$, we use Harish-Chandra's Plancherel formula for $p$-adic groups to show that the coefficient of $T_x$ in $t_w$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{q}$, with denominator depending only on the two-sided cell containing $w$, and dividing a power of the Poincaré polynomial of the finite Weyl group. As an application, we conjecture that these denominators encode more detailed information about the failure of the Kazhdan-Lusztig classification at roots of the Poincaré polynomial than is currently known. Along the way, we show that upon specializing $\mathbf{q}=q>1$, the map from $J$ to the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra is injective. As an application of injectivity, we give a novel criterion for an Iwahori-spherical representation to have fixed vectors under a larger parahoric subgroup in terms of its Kazhdan-Lusztig parameter.

Characteristic polynomials of isometries of even unimodular lattices

Abstract:E. Bayer-Fluckiger gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be realized as the characteristic polynomial of a semisimple isometry of an even unimodular lattice, by describing the local-global obstruction, and the author extended the result. This article presents a systematic way to compute the obstruction. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a Salem number of degree $10$ or $18$ to be realized as the dynamical degree of an automorphism of nonprojective K3 surface, in terms of its minimal polynomial.

Abstract:We establish combinatorial and inductive formulas for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials associated to covexillary elements in classical types, extending results of Boe, Lascoux-Schützenberger, Sankaran-Vanchinathan, and Zelevinsky for Grassmannians of classical types. The proof uses intersection cohomology theory and the isomorphism of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties from Anderson-Ikeda-Jeon-Kawago.

Abstract:We show that a certain two-dimensional family of Weyl sums of length $P$ takes values as large as $P^{3/4 + o(1)}$ on almost all linear slices of the unit torus, contradicting a widely held expectation that Weyl sums should exhibit square-root cancellation on generic subvarieties of the unit torus. This is an extension of a result of J. Brandes, S. T. Parsell, C. Poulias, G. Shakan and R. C. Vaughan (2020) from quadratic and cubic monomials to general polynomials of arbitrary degree. The new ingredients of our approach are the classical results of E. Bombieri (1966) on exponential sums along a curve and R. J. Duffin and A. C. Schaeffer (1941) on Diophantine approximations by rational numbers with prime denominators.

The Weil-Steinberg character of finite classical groups

Abstract:We compute the irreducible constitutents of the product of the Weil character and the Steinberg character in those finite classical groups for which a Weil character is defined, namely the symplectic, unitary and general linear groups. It turns out that this product is multiplicity free for the symplectic and general unitary groups, but not for the general linear groups. As an application we show that the restriction of the Steinberg character of such a group to the subgroup stabilizing a vector in the natural module is multiplicity free. The proof of this result for the unitary groups uses an observation of Brunat, published as an appendix to our paper. As our "Weil character" for the symplectic groups in even characteristic we use the 2-modular Brauer character of the generalized spinor representation. Its product with the Steinberg character is the Brauer character of a projective module. We also determine its indecomposable direct summands.

Abstract:We begin with modular form periods, a focal point of several Yuri Manin's works. The similarity is discussed between the corresponding zeta-polynomials and superpolynomials of algebraic links, closely related to Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials. We focus on DAHA superpolynomials and motivic ones, defined via compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities and their counterparts in arbitrary ranks; the non-unibranch construction is new. They conjecturally coincide with the corresponding generalizations of L-functions and satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis in some sectors of the parameters. Presumably, the motivic ones an be interpreted as certain partition functions of Landau-Ginzburg models associated with plane curve singularities; RH for them is remarkably similar to the Lee-Yang circle theorem for Ising models. A q,t-deformation of the Witten index is obtained as an application. General perspectives of the motivic theory of isolated curve and surface singularities are discussed, including possible implications in number theory. Also, we introduce super-analogs of $\rho_{ab}$-invariants and discuss super-deformations of the Riemann's zeta. Among other topics: Verlinde algebras, and the topological vertex.

Monotonicity of inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials

Abstract:For arbitrary Coxeter systems, we prove that inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials satisfy a monotonicity property. This follows from the validity of Soergel's conjecture and the existence of injective morphisms between Rouquier complexes in the mixed perverse Hecke category. The monotonicity property is generalised to parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Abstract:We study the multiplicities of semisimple split characters in tensor product of semisimple split characters of $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We prove that these multiplicities are polynomial in q with non-negative integer coefficients and we obtain a criterion for their non-vanishing. We give moreover an interpretation of these polynomials in terms of the counting of the representations of star-shaped quivers, generalizing a previous result of Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas, who linked multiplicities for generic $k$-tuples of semisimple split characters and Kac polynomials.

Abstract:When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.

Abstract:We determine the invariants, with arbitrary determinant twists, of the parabolic subgroups of the finite general linear group GL_n(q) acting on the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of the natural GL_n(q)-module V. In addition, we obtain the graded multiplicity of the Steinberg module of GL_n(q) in the tensor product of the symmetric algebra and the exterior algebra of V, twisted by an arbitrary determinant power.

Vanishing of Schubert Coefficients

Abstract:Schubert coefficients are nonnegative integers $c^w_{u,v}$ that arise in Algebraic Geometry and play a central role in Algebraic Combinatorics. It is a major open problem whether they have a combinatorial interpretation, i.e, whether $c^w_{u,v} \in \#{\sf P}$. We study the closely related vanishing problem of Schubert coefficients: $\{c^w_{u,v}=^?0\}$. Until this work it was open whether this problem is in the polynomial hierarchy ${\sf PH}$. We prove that $\{c^w_{u,v}=^?0\}$ in ${\sf coAM}$ assuming the GRH. In particular, the vanishing problem is in ${\Sigma_2^{\text{p}}}$. Our approach is based on constructions lifted formulations, which give polynomial systems of equations for the problem. The result follows from a reduction to Parametric Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, recently studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.13027" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.13027">arXiv:2408.13027</a>. We apply our construction to show that the vanishing problem is in ${\sf NP}_{\mathbb{C}} \cap {\sf P}_{\mathbb{R}}$ in the Blum--Shub--Smale (BSS) model of computation over complex and real numbers respectively. Similarly, we prove that computing Schubert coefficients is in $\#{\sf P}_{\mathbb{C}}$, a counting version of the BSS model. We also extend our results to classical types. With one notable exception of the vanishing problem in type $D$, all our results extend to all types.

Abstract:We obtain new bounds on some trilinear and quadrilinear character sums, which are non-trivial starting from very short ranges of the variables. An application to an apparently new problem on oscillations of characters on differences between Farey fractions is given. Other applications include a modular analogue of a multiplicative hybrid problem of Iwaniec and Sárközy (1987) and the solvability of some prime type equations with constraints.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a complex semisimple Lie algebra. We give a description of characters of irreducible Whittaker modules for $\mathfrak{g}$ with any infinitesimal character, along with a Kazhdan-Lusztig algorithm for computing them.
