Abstract:In this paper, we address the target localization problem based on hybrid range and angle measurements with unknown transmit power in both noncooperative and cooperative scenarios, respectively. By analyzing the approximate expressions of the noise terms in the measurement models, an original nonconvex localization problem is formulated according to the least square criterion. This problem is transformed into a mixed semi-definite programing/second-order cone programing by using convex relaxation techniques. Computer simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can effectively solve the localization problem with good performance in the unknown transmit power case.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the target localization problem based on hybrid distance and angle measurements in wireless sensor networks, especially the localization problem when the transmit power is unknown in non - cooperative and cooperative scenarios. By analyzing the approximate expression of the noise term in the measurement model, according to the least - squares criterion, the paper first constructs an original non - convex localization problem. Then, by using convex relaxation techniques, this non - convex problem is transformed into a mixed semidefinite programming/second - order cone programming problem. Computer simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can effectively solve the localization problem when the transmit power is unknown and exhibits good performance. ### Main contributions: 1. **Problem definition**: The paper solves the target localization problem based on hybrid received signal strength (RSS) and angle - of - arrival (AOA) measurements in non - cooperative and cooperative scenarios, especially when the transmit power is unknown. 2. **Model establishment**: By analyzing the noise term in the measurement model, a non - convex localization problem based on the least - squares criterion is proposed. 3. **Problem transformation**: Using convex relaxation techniques, the non - convex problem is transformed into a mixed semidefinite programming/second - order cone programming problem. 4. **Algorithm verification**: Through computer simulation, the effectiveness and performance of the proposed algorithm are verified. ### Key techniques and methods: - **Least - squares criterion**: Used to construct the initial non - convex localization problem. - **Convex relaxation techniques**: Transform non - convex problems into convex problems for easy solution. - **Mixed semidefinite programming/second - order cone programming**: The final form of the optimization problem, which can be solved using existing optimization tools (such as CVX). ### Experimental results: - **Non - cooperative localization**: Simulation results show that as the number of anchor nodes increases, the localization performance gradually improves. In addition, the proposed SDP/SOCP1 algorithm performs best among all the algorithms discussed, approaching the Cramér - Rao lower bound (CRLB). - **Cooperative localization**: Simulation results show that as the number of nodes increases, the normalized root - mean - square error (NRMSE) gradually decreases, indicating that more target/target communication link information helps improve localization accuracy. Although the performance of the proposed algorithm is slightly better than that of the SDP method, the results confirm that the hybrid measurement system has better performance than the traditional single - measurement system. ### Conclusion: The paper proposes a non - cooperative and cooperative localization algorithm based on hybrid RSS - AOA measurements under the condition of unknown transmit power. By transforming the non - convex problem into a mixed semidefinite programming/second - order cone programming problem, the target localization problem is successfully solved, and the effectiveness and superiority of the algorithm are verified by simulation.
