Abstract:The growing use of conventional energy such as fossil fuels results in problems degrading our environment. Hydrogen is frequently discussed as a clean energy in the future without pollution. However, efficient and safe storage of hydrogen constitute a key challenge and unresolved problem. One of the main options is solid-state storage technology. A successful solid-state reversible storage material should meet the requirements of high storage capacity, suitable thermodynamic properties, reversibility and fast adsorption and desorption kinetics. This feature article focuses mainly on the development of thermodynamic improvement of hydrogen storage materials in the past few years including the complex hydride, ammonia borane, and metal-organic frameworks. Abstract:Efficient storage of hydrogen is one of the biggest challenges towards a potential hydrogen economy. Hydrogen storage in liquid carriers is an attractive alternative to compression or liquefaction at low temperatures. Liquid carriers can be stored cost-effectively and transportation and distribution can be integrated into existing infrastructures. The development of efficient liquid carriers is part of the work of the International Energy Agency Task 40: Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage. Here, we report the state-of-the-art for ammonia and closed CO2-cycle methanol-based storage options as well for liquid organic hydrogen carriers.

Abstract:There is a demand for a sufficient and sustainable energy supply. Hence, the search for applicable hydrogen storage materials is extremely important owing to the diversified merits of hydrogen energy. Lithium and sodium borohydride, ammonia borane, hydrazine, and formic acid have been extensively investigated as promising hydrogen storage materials based on their relatively high hydrogen content. Significant advances, such as hydrogen generation temperatures and reaction kinetics, have been made in the catalytic hydrolysis of aqueous lithium and sodium borohydride and ammonia borane as well as in the catalytic decomposition of hydrous hydrazine and formic acid. In this Minireview we briefly survey the research progresses in catalytic hydrogen generation from these liquid‐phase chemical hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:The storage and transfer of energy require a safe technology to mitigate the global environmental issues resulting from the massive application of fossil fuels. Fuel cells have used hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy source. Nevertheless, the storage and transport of hydrogen have presented longstanding problems. Recently, liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have emerged as a solution to these issues. The hydrogen storage technique in LOHCs is more attractive than those of conventional energy storage systems like liquefaction, compression at high pressure, and methods of adsorption and absorption. The release and acceptance of hydrogen should be reversible by LOHC molecules following favourable reaction kinetics. LOHCs comprise liquid and semi-liquid organic compounds that are hydrogenated to store hydrogen. These hydrogenated molecules are stored and transported and finally dehydrogenated to release the required hydrogen for supplying energy. Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are conducted catalytically for multiple cycles. This review elaborates on the characteristics of different LOHC molecules, based on their efficacy as energy generators. Additionally, different catalysts used for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are discussed.

Abstract:Liquid hydrogen is a promising energy carrier in the global hydrogen value chain with the advantages of high volumetric energy density/purity, low operating pressure, and high flexibility in delivery. Safe and high-efficiency storage and transportation are essential in the large-scale utilization of liquid hydrogen. Aiming at the two indicators of the hold time and normal evaporation rate (NER) required in standards, this paper focuses on the thermal behaviors of fluid during the no-vented storage of liquid hydrogen and thermal insulations applied for the liquid hydrogen tanks, respectively. After presenting an overview of experimental/theoretical investigations on thermal behaviors, as well as typical forms/testing methods of performance of thermal insulations for liquid hydrogen tanks, seven perspectives are proposed on the key challenges and recommendations for future work. This work can benefit the design and improvement of high-performance LH2 tanks.

Abstract:Hydrogen gas is regarded as an ideal clean energy carrier to substitute fossil-based fuels. However, develop safe, efficient, and economical hydrogen storage approaches is still a big challenge in engineering for real applications. Recently, liquid hydrogen rich molecules have attracted great attention, because of their high hydrogen content, low potential risk, and reasonable cost. This review is to summarize the latest developments of hydrogen generation from liquid hydrogen rich molecules (i.e. formic acid, alcohols, ammonia, hydrous hydrazine, primary amines, and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs)) and their regeneration, demonstrating the state-of-the-art liquid-phase hydrogen storage technology. Notably, the development of highly active catalysts and the related catalytic systems to accelerate the evolution of the catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of hydrogen rich chemicals, making the circular hydrogen economy feasible and affordable.

Abstract:This review is about reviewing the challenges in hydrogen storage and transportation from its physical and economical perspective and presenting LOHC as a feasible solution. Restructuring the current energy industry towards sustainability requires transitioning from carbon based to renewable energy sources, reducing CO2 emissions. Hydrogen, is considered a significant clean energy carrier. However, it faces challenges in transportation and storage due to its high reactivity, flammability, and low density under ambient conditions. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers offer a solution for storing hydrogen because they allow for the economical and practical storage of organic compounds in regular vessels through hydrogenation and dehydrogenation. This review evaluates several hydrogen technologies aimed at addressing the challenges associated with hydrogen transportation and its economic viablity. The discussion delves into exploring the catalysts and their activity in the context of catalysts′ development. This review highlights the pivotal role of various catalyst materials in enhancing the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activities of multiple LOHC systems, including benzene/cyclohexane, toluene/methylcyclohexane (MCH), N‐ethylcarbazole (NEC)/dodecahydro‐N‐ethylcarbazole (H12‐NEC), and dibenzyltoluene (DBT)/perhydrodibenzyltoluene (H18‐DBT). By exploring the catalytic properties of noble metals, transition metals, and multimetallic catalysts, the review provides valuable insights into their design and optimization. Also, the discussion revolved around the implementation of a hydrogen economy on a global scale, with a particular focus on the plans pertaining to Saudi Arabia and the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries. The review lays out the challenges this technology will face, including the need to increase its H2 capacity, reduce energy consumption by providing solutions, and guarantee the thermal stability of the materials.

Abstract:Safe,efficient and economical hydrogen storage is the key technique for the large-scale application of hydrogen energy.With respect to high-pressure and liquefaction hydrogen storage,solid-state hydrogen storage,which can store hydrogen in materials by forming solid solution and/or hydrides,is regarded as the most promising technique because of its good safety and high energy density.To achieve the hydrogen storage capacity of above 5.0 wt% for on-board applications,the high-capacity hydrogen storage materials including metal aluminum hydrides,borohydrides,metal-N-H systems and amidoboranes were studied and developed.This brief review deals with the recent developments of high-capacity hydrogen storage materials.The emphases are focused on the hydrogen storage capacity,thermodynamics,kinetics,mechanisms and the effects of composition modification,catalyst doping and particle size on the hydrogen storage properties.

Abstract:Hydrogen has attracted widespread attention as a carbon-neutral energy source, but developing efficient and safe hydrogen storage technologies remains a huge challenge. Recently, liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) technology has shown great potential for efficient and stable hydrogen storage and transport. This technology allows for safe and economical large-scale transoceanic transportation and long-cycle hydrogen storage. In particular, traditional organic hydrogen storage liquids are derived from nonrenewable fossil fuels through costly refining procedures, resulting in unavoidable environmental contamination. Biomass holds great promise for the preparation of LOHCs due to its unique carbon-balance properties and feasibility to manufacture aromatic and nitrogen-doped compounds. According to recent studies, almost 100% conversion and 92% yield of benzene could be obtained through advanced biomass conversion technologies, showing great potential in preparing biomass-based LOHCs. Overall, the present LOHCs systems and their unique applications are introduced in this review, and the technical paths are summarized. Furthermore, this paper provides an outlook on the future development of LOHCs technology, focusing on biomass-derived aromatic and N-doped compounds and their applications in hydrogen storage.

Abstract:Energy storage and conversion via a hydrogen chain is a recognized vision of future energy systems based on renewables and, therefore, a key to bridging the technological gap toward a net-zero CO2 emission society. This paper reviews the hydrogen technological chain in the framework of renewables, including water electrolysis, hydrogen storage, and fuel cell technologies. Water electrolysis is an energy conversion technology that can be scalable in megawatts and operational in a dynamic mode to match the intermittent generation of renewable power. Material concerns include a robust diaphragm for alkaline cells, catalysts and construction materials for proton exchange membrane (PEM) cells, and validation of the long-term durability for solid oxide cells. Hydrogen storage via compressed gas up to 70 MPa is optional for automobile applications. Fuel cells favor hydrogen fuel because of its superfast electrode kinetics. PEM fuel cells and solid oxide fuel cells are dominating technologies for automobile and stationary applications, respectively. Both technologies are at the threshold of their commercial markets with verified technical readiness and environmental merits; however, they still face restraints such as unavailable hydrogen fueling infrastructure, long-term durability, and costs to compete with the analog power technologies already on the market.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) is being acknowledged as the future energy carrier due to its high energy density and potential to mitigate the intermittency of other renewable energy sources. H2 also ensures a clean, carbon‐neutral, and sustainable environment for current and forthcoming generations by contributing to the global missions of decarbonization in the transportation, industrial, and building sectors. Several H2 storage technologies are available and have been employed for its secure and economical transport. The existing H2 storage and transportation technologies like liquid‐state, cryogenic, or compressed hydrogen are in use but still suffer from significant challenges regarding successful realization at the commercial level. These factors affect the overall operational cost of technology. Therefore, H2 storage demands novel technologies that are safe for mobility, transportation, long‐term storage, and yet it is cost‐effective. This review article presents potential opportunities for H2 storage technologies, such as physical and chemical storage. The prime characteristics and requirements of H2 storage are briefly explained. A detailed discussion of chemical‐based hydrogen storage systems such as metal hydrides, chemical hydrides (CH3OH, NH3, and HCOOH), and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) is presented. Furthermore, the recent developments and challenges regarding hydrogen storage, their real‐world applications, and prospects have also been debated.

Abstract:In this paper, the characteristics of current hydrogen storage technologies are reviewed from the aspects of hydrogen storage capacity, working conditions, reversibility, and safety. Among the technologies mentioned herein, N-containing liquid organic hydrogen carriers (N-containing LOHCs) are regarded as an ideal hydrogen storage medium because of their excellent hydrogen storage performance. However, N-containing LOHCs are mostly hydrogenated/dehydrogenated by traditional thermal catalysis, which requires strict reaction conditions (120 ~ 200°C; 6 ~ 7 MPa) and external hydrogen supply. Thermal catalysis has high energy consumption and certain safety risks. The electrochemical method can hydrogenate/dehydrogenate organic substrates under mild conditions (25 ~ 60°C; normal pressure) and does not require an external H 2 supply. Therefore, electrochemical hydrogen storage technology based on N-containing LOHCs has great development potential.

Abstract:In light of climate change imperatives, there is a critical need for technological advancements and research endeavors towards clean energy alternatives to replace conventional fossil fuels. Additionally, the development of high-capacity energy storage solutions for global transportability becomes paramount. Hydrogen emerges as a promising environmentally sustainable energy carrier, devoid of carbon dioxide emissions and possessing a high energy density per unit mass. Its versatile applicability spans various sectors, including industry, power generation, and transportation. However, the commercialization of hydrogen necessitates further technological innovations. Notably, high-pressure compression for hydrogen storage presents safety challenges and inherent limitations in storage capacity, resulting in about 30%–50% loss of hydrogen production. Consequently, substantial research endeavors are underway in the domain of material-based chemical hydrogen storage that causes reactions to occur at temperatures below 200 °C. This approach enables the utilization of existing infrastructure, such as fossil fuels and natural gas, while offering comparatively elevated hydrogen storage capacities. This study aims to introduce recent investigations concerning the synthesis and decomposition mechanisms of chemical hydrogen storage materials, including methanol, ammonia, and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC).

Abstract:Hydrogen accumulation, storage and production systems are the important direction in the development of fundamental and applied aspects of alternative energy. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC), polycyclic forms of the corresponding aromatic compounds, are an efficient way of hydrogen storage and release with a hydrogen content of up to 7.3 mas.%. This article compares LOHC as potential substrates for hydrogen storage and hydrogen evolution based on catalytic hydrogenation-dehydrogenation reactions, including cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, decalin, perhydroterphenyl, bicyclohexyl, perhydrodibenzyltoluene and perhydroethylcarbazole. For each of the perhydrogenated substrates, data on the activity and selectivity of Pt-containing dehydrogenation catalysts are presented.

Abstract:Abstract An important component of the deep decarbonization of the worldwide energy system is to build up the large-scale utilization of hydrogen to substitute for fossil fuels in all sectors including industry, the electricity sector, transportation and heating. Hence, apart from reducing hydrogen production costs, establishing an efficient and suitable infrastructure for the storage, transportation and distribution of hydrogen becomes essential. This article provides a technically detailed overview of the state-of-the-art technologies for hydrogen infrastructure, including the physical- and material-based hydrogen storage technologies. Physical-based storage means the storage of hydrogen in its compressed gaseous, liquid or supercritical state. Hydrogen storage in the form of liquid-organic hydrogen carriers, metal hydrides or power fuels is denoted as material-based storage. Furthermore, primary ways to transport hydrogen, such as land transportation via trailer and pipeline, overseas shipping and some related commercial data, are reviewed. As the key results of this article, hydrogen storage and transportation technologies are compared with each other. This comparison provides recommendations for building appropriate hydrogen infrastructure systems according to different application scenarios.
Recent Advances in Reversible Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier Systems: From Hydrogen Carriers to Catalysts

Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have gained significant attention for large-scale hydrogen storage due to their remarkable gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity (HSC) and compatibility with existing oil and gas transportation networks for long-distance transport. However, the practical application of reversible LOHC systems has been constrained by the intrinsic thermodynamic properties of hydrogen carriers and the performances of associated catalysts in the (de)hydrogenation cycles. To overcome these challenges, thermodynamically favored carriers, high-performance catalysts, and catalytic procedures need to be developed. Here, significant advances in recent years have been summarized, primarily centered on regular LOHC systems catalyzed by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, including dehydrogenative aromatization of cycloalkanes to arenes and N-heterocyclics to N-heteroarenes, as well as reverse hydrogenation processes. Furthermore, with the development of metal complexes for dehydrogenative coupling, a new family of reversible LOHC systems based on alcohols is described that can release H2 under relatively mild conditions. Finally, views on the next steps and challenges in the field of LOHC technology are provided, emphasizing new resources for low-cost hydrogen carriers, high-performance catalysts, catalytic technologies, and application scenarios.

Abstract:Transitioning towards a carbon‐free economy is the current global need of the hour. The transportation sector is one of the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere disturbing the delicate balance on the Earth, leading to global warming. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative energy carrier capable of replacing fossil fuels, with advancements in systems facilitating its storage and long‐distance transport. In this context, the concept of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) is taking the lead, offering a plausible solution because of its compatibility with the existing gasoline infrastructure, while eliminating the challenges associated with conventional hydrogen storage methods. Key LOHC systems, such as methylcyclohexane/toluene and H‐18‐dibenzyltoluene/dibenzyltoluene (H‐18‐DBT/DBT), have been extensively researched for large‐scale applications. However, challenges persist, particularly concerning the endothermic nature of the reactions involved. In this regard, of particular interest are the multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts supported on a single support, offering cost‐effective and energy‐efficient solutions to circumvent issues related to the endothermicity of the reactions. In this review, solid heterogeneous catalysts that have been developed and investigated for reversible dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions have been presented. These catalysts include monometallic, bimetallic, and pincer complexes supported on materials designed for efficient hydrogen uptake and release.

Abstract:The liquid chemical hydrogen storage technology has great potentials for high-density hydrogen storage and transportation at ambient temperature and pressure. However, its commercial applications highly rely on the high-performance heterogeneous dehydrogenation catalysts, owing to the dehydrogenation difficulty of chemical hydrogen storage materials. In recent years, the chemists and materials scientists found that the supported metal nanoparticles (MNPs) can exhibit high catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability for the dehydrogenation of chemical hydrogen storage materials, which will clear the way for the commercial application of liquid chemical hydrogen storage technology. This review has summarized the recent important research progress in the MNP-catalyzed liquid chemical hydrogen storage technology, including formic acid dehydrogenation, hydrazine hydrate dehydrogenation and ammonia borane dehydrogenation, discussed the urgent challenges in the key field, and pointed out the future research trends.

Abstract:Hydrogen carriers are one of the keys to the success of using hydrogen as an energy vector. Indeed, sustainable hydrogen production exploits the excess of renewable energy sources, after which temporary storage is required. The conventional approaches to hydrogen storage and transport are compressed hydrogen (CH2) and liquefied hydrogen (LH2), which require severe operating conditions related to pressure (300–700 bar) and temperature (T < −252 °C), respectively. To overcome these issues, which have hindered market penetration, several alternatives have been proposed in the last few decades. In this review, the most promising hydrogen carriers (ammonia, methanol, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, and metal hydrides) have been considered, and the main stages of their supply chain (production, storage, transportation, H2 release, and their recyclability) have been described and critically analyzed, focusing on the latest results available in the literature, the highlighting of which is our current concern. The last section reviews recent techno-economic analyses to drive the selection of hydrogen carrier systems and the main constraints that must be considered. The analyzed results show how the selection of H2 carriers is a multiparametric function, and it depends on technological factors as well as international policies and regulations.
