Abstract:We report on a theoretical study of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of magnesium atoms by circularly polarized intense laser pulses. We introduce a concise model considering the laser-induced dynamic core polarization, which is an often overlooked effect in understanding strong-field double ionization. By tracing back the electron trajectories, we demonstrate how the ionic response to the instantaneous laser field enhances the NSDI probability, which plays a crucial role in circular polarization. Furthermore, we propose a method to extract the ionic polarizability from the ratio of double to single ionization. This scheme can be applied to other polar targets and serves as a potential way to probe nonequilibrium states of strongly driven systems on the subfemtosecond timescale.

Abstract:Author(s): He Tong-Tong, Liu Zi-Chao, Li Ying-Bin, Huang Cheng Nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of He atoms in a parallel polarized three-color field is investigated by using a three-dimensional classical ensemble model. The driving field is composed of 1600-nm and 800-nm laser pulses with equal intensity. A weak 400-nm laser pulse is used as a controlling field. The results indicate that in the correlated electron momentum distribution and ion momentum distribution, the electron pairs and ions of the first returning recollision (FRR) trajectory, the odd-returning recollision (ORR) trajectory (excluding FRR), and the even-returning recollision (ERR) trajectory are located in different regions separated well from each other. The electron pairs from FRR trajectories mainly distribute around the origin, and those electron pairs from ORR and ERR trajectories respectively cluster in the first quadrant and the third quadrant. With the increase of the phase of the controlling field, the proportion of FRR trajectories in NSDI first increases and then decreases, and the proportions of those trajectories with the returning number more than one first decrease and then increase, which leads to the fact that with the increase of the phase of the controlling field, the anticorrelated emissions first increase and then decrease and correspondingly the ion momentum distribution evolves from a double-hump to a triple-hump and then to a double-hump structure. Moreover, NSDI from multiple-returning recollision trajectories mainly occur through recollision-induced direct ionization (RDI) mechanism, while NSDI from the FRR trajectories mainly occurs through recollision-induced excitation with subsequent ionization (RESI) mechanism. Abstract:Using a semiclassical approach, we theoretically study the above-threshold ionization of magnesium by intense, mid-infrared laser pulses. The formation of low-energy structures in the photoelectron spectrum is found to be enhanced by comparing with a calculation based on the single-active electron approximation. By performing electron trajectory and recollision-time distribution analysis, we demonstrate that this phenomenon is due to the laser-induced ionic core polarization effects on the recolliding electrons. We also show that the polarization effects should be experimentally detectable. Our finding provides new insight into ultrafast control of strong-field photoionization and imaging of polar molecules.
Wavelength-dependent Nonsequential Double Ionization of Magnesium by Intense Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on a systematic investigation of wavelength scaling strong-field double ionization of Mg in intense laser fields. A significant decrease of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) yield with increasing wavelength from 800--2000 nm is observed. Our data is well reproduced by a three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation considering recollision impact excitation cross section. We demonstrate that the NSDI of Mg mainly occurs via the first ionic excited state ${\mathrm{Mg}}^{+*}(3p\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3/2,1/2})$ pumped by returning electron impact process. The recollision impact direct ionization pathway plays a minor role here. The wavelength dependence of the NSDI ratio is due to the recollision energy-dependent excitation cross section as well as the electron wave packet diffusion effects, both sensitively depending on the wavelength. Our work represents a step towards strong-field double ionization experiments on Mg in the long wavelength limit and sheds light on the NSDI mechanism of alkaline-earth metal atoms.

Abstract:We investigate nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of helium by using an additional magnetic field parallel to the polarization of the laser pulse. By exploring the ability of a magnetic field for focusing the selected trajectories that contribute to the NSDI, we have found that the yield of NSDI, as a function of the magnetic-field strength, shows different behavior for different laser intensities. As a result, an additional magnetic field provides a way to identify that the NSDI mechanism of laser-assisted collision ionization begins to play an important role as the laser intensity increases.

Abstract:We demonstrate that dissociative ionization of H2 can be fully manipulated in an angle-time-resolved fashion, employing a polarization-skewed (PS) laser pulse in which the polarization vector rotates. The leading and falling edges of the PS laser pulse, characterized by unfolded field polarization, trigger, sequentially, parallel and perpendicular transitions of stretching H2 molecules, respectively. These transitions result in counterintuitive proton ejections that deviate significantly from the laser polarization directions. Our findings demonstrate that the reaction pathways can be controlled through fine-tuning the time-dependent polarization of the PS laser pulse. The experimental results are well reproduced using an intuitive wave-packet surface propagation simulation method. Abstract:A systematic study of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of alkaline-earth metal atoms with mid-infrared femtosecond pulses is reported. We find that the measured NSDI yield shows a strong target dependence and it is more suppressed for alkaline-earth metal with higher ionization potential. The observation is attributed to the differences in the recollision induced excitation and ionization cross sections of alkaline-earth metals. This work indicates that NSDI of alkaline-earth metals can be generally understood within recollision picture and sheds light on ultrafast control of electron correlation and dynamics of ionic excited states during NSDI of atoms with complex structures.

Abstract:Abstract Electron dynamics during non-sequential double ionization (NSDI) is one of the most attractive research orientations in laser-atom or molecule interaction field. Based on the classic 2D model, the NSDI process of argon atoms driven by a few-cycle orthogonal two-color (OTC) laser field composed of 800 and 400nm laser pulses is studied. By changing the relative phase of two laser pulses, a localized enhancement of NSDI yield is observed at 0.5π and 1.5π which could be attributed to a rapid and substantial increase in the number of electrons returning to the parent ion within extremely short time intervals at these specific phases. Through the analysis of the electron-electron momentum correlations within different time windows of NSDI events and the angular distributions of emitted electrons in different channels, we observed a more pronounced electron-electron correlation phenomenon in the recollision-induced ionization (RII) channel. This is attributed to the shorter delay time in the RII channel.

Abstract:The nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of atom is revisited by elliptically polarized few-cycle laser pulse with the classical ensemble method. We focus on the events that both electrons emit into the same direction along the long and short axis of the laser polarization plane, and how do the correlated electron momentum spectra of these two events depends on the carrier-envelope-phase (CEP). We first exhibit that the double-ionization probability has a negligible dependence on CEP. Back analysis shows that the ionization dynamics of the second electron are strongly depend on the CEP, which is significantly responsible for the CEP-dependent correlated electron momentum spectra. Besides, the correlated electron momentum spectrum along the long axis of the laser polarization plane reproduces the so-called V-like structure (also called the figurelike structure) observed in experiments [A. Staudte, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 263002 (2007); A. Rudenko, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 263003 (2007)]. We sort the V-like shape into two regions and find that the different regions exhibit significantly different dynamics behaviors. Simultaneously, we demonstrate that the electron pairs emitted into the same direction along the short axis of the laser polarization plane is a result of the nuclear–electron attraction, and both the nuclear–electron attraction and e–e repulsion significantly contribute to the V-like structure.

Abstract:The degree of elliptical polarization of intense short laser pulses is shown to be related to the timing of strong-field non-sequential double ionization. Higher ellipticity is predicted to force the initiation of double ionization into a narrower time window, and this "pins" the ionizing field strength in an unexpected way, leading to the first experimentally testable formula for double ionization probability as a function of ellipticity.

Abstract:Using a full-dimensional Monte Carlo classical ensemble method, we present a theoretical study of atomic nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) with mid-infrared laser fields, and compare with results from near-infrared laser fields. Unlike single-electron strong-field processes, double ionization shows complex and unexpected interplays between the returning electron and its parent ion core. As a result of these interplays, NSDI for mid-IR fields is dominated by second-returning electron trajectories, instead of first-returning trajectories for near-IR fields. Some complex NSDI channels commonly happen with near-IR fields, such as the recollision-excitation-with-subsequent-ionization (RESI) channel, are virtually shut down by mid-IR fields. Besides, the final energies of the two electrons can be extremely unequal, leading to novel e-e momentum correlation spectra that can be measured experimentally.

Abstract:Using a three-dimensional classical ensemble model, we investigate the dependence of relative frequency and relative initial phase for nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of atoms driven by orthogonal two-color (OTC) fields. Our findings reveal that the NSDI probability is clearly dependent on the relative initial phase of OTC fields at different relative frequencies. The inversion analysis results indicate that adjusting the relative frequency of OTC fields helps control returning probability and flight time of the first electron. Furthermore, manipulating the relative frequency at the same relative initial phases can vary the revisit time of the recolliding electron, leading that the emission direction of Ar2+ ions is explicitly dependent on the relative frequency.

Abstract:Using a three-dimensional semiclassical method, we perform a systematic analysis of the effects of an additional static electric field on nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of a helium atom in an intense, linearly polarized laser field. It is found that the static electric field influences not only the ionization rate, but also the kinetic energy of the ionized electron returning to the parent ion, in such a way that, if the rate is increased, then the kinetic energy of the first returning electron is decreased, and vice versa. These two effects compete in NSDI. Since the effect of the static electric field on the ionization of the first electron plays a more crucial role in the competition, the symmetric double-peak structure of the He2+ momentum distribution parallel to the polarization of the laser field is destroyed. Furthermore, the contribution of the trajectories with multiple recollisions to the NSDI is also changed dramatically by the static electric field. As the static electric field increases, the trajectories with two recollisions, which start at the time when the laser and the static electric field are in the same direction, become increasingly important for the NSDI.

Abstract:Topological structures based on controllable ferroelectric or ferromagnetic domain configurations offer the opportunity to develop microelectronic devices such as high-density memories. Despite the increasing experimental and theoretical insights into various domain structures (such as polar spirals, polar wave, polar vortex) over the past decade, manipulating the topological transformations of polar structures and comprehensively understanding its underlying mechanism remains lacking. By conducting an in-situ non-contact bias technique, here we systematically investigate the real-time topological transformations of polar structures in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 multilayers at an atomic level. The procedure of vortex pair splitting and the transformation from polar vortex to polar wave and out-of-plane polarization are observed step by step. Furthermore, the redistribution of charge in various topological structures has been demonstrated under an external bias. This provides new insights for the symbiosis of polar and charge and offers an opportunity for a new generation of microelectronic devices.
Laser-assisted Collision Effect on Non-Sequential Double Ionization of Helium in a Few-Cycle Laser Pulse

Abstract:Nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of helium in an intense few-cycle laser pulse is investigated by applying the three-dimensional semi-classical re-scattering method. It is found that the momentum distribution of He$^{2+}$ shows a single-double-single peak structure as the pulse intensity increases. According to the different mechanisms dominating the NSDI process, the laser intensity can be classified into three regimes where the momentum distribution of He$^{2+}$ exhibits different characteristics. In the relatively high intensity regime, an NSDI mechanism named the "laser-assisted collision ionization" is found to be dominating the NSDI process and causing the single peak structure. This result can shed light on the study of non-sequential ionization of a highly charged ion in a relatively intense laser pulse.
Controlling Magnetic and Electric Nondipole Effects with Synthesized Two Perpendicularly Propagating Laser Fields

Abstract:Nondipole effects are ubiquitous and crucial in light-matter interaction. However, they are too weak to be directly observed. In strong-field physics, motion of electrons is mainly confined in transverse plane of light fields, which suppresses the significance of nondipole effects. Here, we present a theoretical study on enhancing and controlling the nondipole effect by using the synthesized two perpendicularly propagating laser fields. We calculate the three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions of strong-field tunneling ionization of hydrogen atoms using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo model and show that the nondipole effects are noticeably enhanced in such laser fields due to their remarkable influences on the sub-cycle photoelectron dynamics. In particular, we reveal that the magnitudes of the magnetic and electric components of nondipole effects can be separately controlled by modulating the ellipticity and amplitude of driving laser fields. This novel scenario holds promising applications for future studies with ultrafast structured light fields.

Abstract:Polarization moments play a crucial role in measuring magnetic fields for nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) atomic magnetometers. However, it is challenging to distinguish between each polarization moment and evaluate its effect on the magnetic resonance response signal in an alkali vapor cell with buffer gas. To address this issue, a method is proposed to identify different polarization moments through the frequency shift of the magnetic resonance response signal. The proportion of each polarization moment is determined, and it is demonstrated that the magnetic resonance response signal is affected by the hexadecapole moment, resulting in a frequency shift and a decrease in signal amplitude. To mitigate this effect, an approach is investigated to manipulate the polarization moments by flipping the phase of the pump light. Ultimately, a 15.19% increase in response amplitude is achieved in the simulated geomagnetic environment within the magnetic shield barrel. The theory and method presented here provide strong support for the study of the polarization moments in an alkali vapor cell with buffer gas, which potentially enhance the performance of NMOR atomic magnetometers. The visualization of the polarization moments evolution process illustrates the symmetry changes of the polarization moment before and after the phase flip of the pump light. By manipulating the phase of the pump light, the selection and manipulation of specific polarization moments can be achieved. image
Excitation, two-center interference and the orbital geometry in laser-induced nonsequential double ionization of diatomic molecules

Abstract:We address the influence of the molecular orbital geometry and of the molecular alignment with respect to the laser-field polarization on laser-induced nonsequential double ionization of diatomic molecules for different molecular species, namely $\mathrm{N}_2$ and $\mathrm{Li}_2$. We focus on the recollision excitation with subsequent tunneling ionization (RESI) mechanism, in which the first electron, upon return, promotes the second electron to an excited state, from where it subsequently tunnels. We show that the electron-momentum distributions exhibit interference maxima and minima due to the electron emission at spatially separated centers. We provide generalized analytical expressions for such maxima or minima, which take into account $s$ $p$ mixing and the orbital geometry. The patterns caused by the two-center interference are sharpest for vanishing alignment angle and get washed out as this parameter increases. Apart from that, there exist features due to the geometry of the lowest occupied molecular orbital (LUMO), which may be observed for a wide range of alignment angles. Such features manifest themselves as the suppression of probability density in specific momentum regions due to the shape of the LUMO wavefunction, or as an overall decrease in the RESI yield due to the presence of nodal planes.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the non-sequential double ionization of Ar atoms in the combined fields of linearly polarized laser and circularly polarized laser through 3D semiclassical simulations. By partially overlapping the two time-delayed multicycle laser pulses, we construct an optical waveform whose polarization ellipticity increase slowly for consecutive optical cycles. This composite laser pulses with the time-dependent ellipticity can tunnel-ionize atoms and steer the first tunneling electron to recollision with the second bound electron through different trajectories, in which the recollision occurs with different return times of the first ionized electron. Through tuning delay time between the two laser pulses, the double ionization yields and recollision trajectories with different return times can be controlled. The time-dependent ellipticity with different delay time can enhance or suppress the probability of different return times. This work provides a scheme exploring electron dynamics in few optical cycle or even subcycle time scale in a multicycle laser field without having to be limited to near-single-cycle laser pulses.
