Abstract:Developing highly active, earth-abundant, and durable electrocatalysts is desired but challenging for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, we design an electrocatalyst of the edge-rich nickel sulfide arrays on the nickel foam (Ni3S2 NSs-NF) by a facile yet efficient wet-chemical method. Benefiting from the three-dimensional nanostructure with numerous active edges, the prepared Ni3S2 NSs-NF exhibits superior OER performance in alkaline conditions. An in-depth study reveals that the real active sites toward OER are the in situ formed heterogenous Ni3S2-NiOOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the density of state (DOS) of the Ni3S2-NiOOH heterojunction near the Fermi level is enhanced, contributing to higher electronic conductivity. As a result, the Ni3S2 NSs-NF with abundant Ni3S2-NiOOH heterojunctions exhibits an efficient electrochemical activity toward OER in alkaline conditions. The Ni3S2 NSs-NF electrode shows an overpotential of 244 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec−1 and possesses ultrastable performance even at 100 mA cm−2.

Abstract:Highly active and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts have become essential to replace commercial electrocatalysts that rely on rare noble metals. High-entropy sulfide nanomaterials, characterized by abundant randomly distributed elements and inherent stability, possess significant potential for applications. However, challenges such as uneven composition, partial oxidation, or imprecise synthesis control still remain in the materials preparation. Herein, a simple and effective two-step hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize NiCoFeCuS nanoparticles supported on foam nickel substrate. With the catalytic active sites produced by electron density redistribution in high-entropy and sulfurization, NiCoFeCuS exhibits excellent alkaline OER performance, with an overpotential of 261 mV and a Tafel slope of 57.97 mV dec(-1) at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is only 88% of commercial RuO2 without any noble metals. Abstract:Developing low-cost, active, and stable electrocatalysts toward acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly desirable for proton electrolyte membrane electrolyzers to produce renewable H-2 energy. Here, we report a noble metal-free NiS-based electrocatalyst suitable for acidic OER media through a facile one-step pyrolysis approach. The prepared NiS particles display high crystallinity and are coupled on a sulfur-doped carbon nitrogen support. Synchrotron X-ray spectroscopies demonstrate that the strong hybridization of Ni and S not only provides a favorable electronic structure for the adsorption and dissociation of water but also offers high stability against the corrosive acidic media. Consequently, the NiS-based electrocatalyst exhibits high efficiency and stable OER performance with a low overpotential of 337 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a Tafel slope of 53.2 mV dec(-1).

Abstract:Abstract Designing and fabricating economically viable, high active and stable electrocatalysts play an important role for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Crystal phase is the crucial factor that governs the electrochemical property and electrocatalytic reaction pathways. Here, a one-step nickel foam derived sulfidation method was presented to synthesize self-supported NiS 2 and Ni 3 S 2 . The crystal phase-dependent chemical properties related to electrocatalytic behavior were evaluated by a series of advanced characterization and density functional theory calculations. Overall, the self-supported Ni 3 S 2 shows high electrochemical activity towards both HER and OER in alkaline conditions, which afford the current density of 10 mA cm −2 with overpotentials of 245 mV for OER and 123 mV for HER, respectively. When employed the self-supported Ni 3 S 2 as the bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, the entire device provides the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.61 V. These results indicate that the electrocatalytic properties can be exert greater improved by controlling the crystal phase, offering the prospect for advanced materials design and development.

Abstract:The development of cheap and effective catalysts is one of the major challenges to boost up electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we synthesized phosphorus incorporated nickel sulfide (Ni3S2@Ni5P4/NF) composite via a simple one-step hydrothermal treatment for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction in basic media. The newly synthesized Ni3S2@Ni5P4/NF composite catalyst shows a remarkable OER activity with an overpotential of 399 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. Ni3S2@Ni5P4/NF also shows a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec-1 with long-term stability for more than 15 h in alkaline media. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of current system is among best catalysts based on Nickle sulfides and nickel phosphides according to our knowledge. Current enhancement can be attributed to fast electron transfer due to synergistic effect of Ni3S2 and Ni5P4 in the composite.

Abstract:Low-cost and highly effective transition metal oxides are being widely researched as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional transition metal oxides suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile polydopamine-assisted carburization strategy for the confined synthesis of novel NiOx/Ni ultrathin heterostructured nanosheets. Benefiting from the large exposed surface area and fast charge transfer, the obtained ultrathin NiOx/Ni heterostructured nanosheets exhibit an overpotential of 358 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec(-1), outperforming other reported representative nickel oxide based materials and commercial Ir/C catalysts. In addition, a sustainable and efficient overall water-splitting electrolyzer integrated ultrathin NiOx/Ni nanosheets with commercial Pt/C can be effectively and stably driven by solar cells.

Abstract:Nickel-based sulfides have been proven to be excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts due to their excellent electrical conductivity, but their poor stability hinders their application in practical applications. To address this issue, defect engineering has been proposed as a viable strategy to enhance the electronic structure of the catalyst and further boost the OER performance. Herein, a MOF-derived Sn-doped NiS/Ni3S2 nanostructure grown in situ on nickel foam (Sn-NixSy/NF) has been designed as an active OER electrocatalyst. The morphology of the material was significantly impacted by the addition of the Sn elements, nanorods modified with nanoparticles providing more active sites. Moreover, the introduction of Sn elements induced the generation of sulfur vacancies (V-s), enhanced electron transfer, promoted electron redistribution, and increased the charge transfer rate. All of these endow the Sn-NixSy/NF-T with exceptionally low overpotentials of 104 and 286 mV to achieve a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm(-2) for OER. Moreover, the Sn-NixSy/NF-T showed long-term stability, maintaining 100 h at current densities of 100 mA cm(-2). In short, this work opened a route for engineering defects to boost the OER.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important semi-reaction in the electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen energy production, and the development of efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts to solve the problem of slow 4-electron transport kinetics in the OER process is key. In this work, a pre-electrocatalyst with the heterogeneous interfacial structure, Prussian blue-modified nickel sulfide with sulfur vacancies (PB/NS-S v ), was designed and then converted to iron-nickel bilayer hydroxyl oxides in oxygen-rich vacancies (FeOOH/NiOOH-O v @NS) through electrochemical oxidative reconstruction to obtain a truly stable and efficient active material. The study utilized in situ Raman to observe the transition from PB/NS-S v to FeOOH/NiOOH-O v @NS during the reaction. The electronic density of states in FeOOH/NiOOH-O v @NS is regulated by the bilayer hydroxyl metal oxide synergistic effect and the abundant oxygen defect of Mental-OOH-O v , which significantly improves OER catalytic performance. FeOOH/NiOOH-O v @NS requires a low overpotential of only 257 mV in 1 mol/L KOH at 100 mA cm −2 current density, has a small Tafel slope of 35.2 mV dec −1 and has excellent stability for 150 h at 100 mA cm −2 current density, making it a promising candidate for industrial applications.

Construction of iron-doped nickel cobalt phosphide nanoparticles via solvothermal phosphidization and their application in alkaline oxygen evolution

Abstract:Multi-metallic phosphides offer the possibility to combine the strategies of surface reconstruction, electronic interaction and mechanistic pathway tuning to achieve high electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activity. Here, iron-doped nickel cobalt phosphide nanoparticles (FexCoyNi2-x-yP) with the crystalline NiCoP phase are for the first time synthesized by the solvothermal phosphidization method via the reaction between metal-organic frameworks and white phosphorus. When used to electrochemically catalyze oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the Fe0.4Co0.8Ni0.8P supported by nickel foam requires only 248 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm-2 current densities, and is robust towards the long-term OER in 1 M KOH. The higher number of electrochemically active sites can account for the good OER activity, along with the improved intrinsic activity which is caused by the electron interaction that optimizes the adsorption energy of hydroxyl intermediates, and that increases the acidity of high-valent metal centers. The OER mechanistic pathway involves both adsorbate and lattice oxygen. Surface conversion is observed after OER in alkaline solution, and metal phosphide layer transforms to metal oxides and (oxy)hydroxides.

Abstract:The design of efficient and active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for hydrogen generation from water electrolysis. Here, crystalline iron-doped nickel sulfide core-amorphous iron-doped nickel phosphate shell heterostructured nanosheets grown on nickel foam (Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 S@NiFe(PO 4 ) x /NF) are prepared by a solvothermal reaction of nickel iron layered double hydroxides on NF (NiFe-LDH/NF) with P 2 S 5 . The heterogeneous interface induces the electronic interaction between the Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 S and NiFe(PO 4 ) x phases, which is beneficial for the OER. The electrode exhibits excellent OER performance, requiring only 208 mV and 246 mV at current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, and a low Tafel slope of 38.75 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH. The OER mechanistic pathways of both Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 S@NiFe(PO 4 ) x /NF and NiFe-LDH/NF involve decoupled electron and proton transfer processes. The increase in the acidity of Ni sites leads to the enhanced participation of LOM for Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 S@NiFe(PO 4 ) x /NF. Additionally, the electrode also shows long-term durability (150 h), with the conversion of surface metal sulfides and phosphates to hydroxides and (oxy)hydroxides.

Abstract:Developing earth-abundant transition metal-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is extremely essential for accomplishing efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting. Herein, we synthesized a Ni3S2/MnO2@N,F-CQDs catalyst with a microstructure composed of interlaced nanowires in a spherical-chain shape by treating a nickel foam substrate with sulfur and co-regulating the morphology and properties of manganese dioxide with carbon dots. The catalyst exhibited excellent OER electrocatalytic performance and stability under alkaline conditions, requiring only a low overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 105.76 mV dec-1. Furthermore, the catalyst remained stable after 3000 cycles of Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) testing and multistep chronopotentiometric (CP) measurements at the current density of 10, 50 and 100 mA cm−2 for 12 h, respectively. The enhanced performance of Ni3S2/MnO2@N,F-CQDs catalyst was mainly attributed to the practical improvement of charge interface transport performance induced by carbon dots and interface layer Ni3S2 which increased active catalytic sites of the electrode and reduced charge transfer resistance. These results suggest a promising approach for developing efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Constructing highly efficient electrocatalysts is vital to enhance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance at industrially relevant current densities. Herein, three-phase coupled Ni 3 S 2 /r-NiS/h-NiS composites are grown in situ on Ni foam (NNSN/NF) via a one-step solvothermal approach. The as-prepared composites need overpotentials of only 377 mV, 451 mV and 476 mV at 1000 mA cm −2 for the OER in alkaline freshwater, simulated seawater and seawater, respectively. In addition, the optimized catalyst exhibited long-term durability at 300 mA cm −2 . Our work clarifies designing and preparing cost-effective Ni-based sulfide electrocatalysts for the OER in alkaline freshwater/simulated seawater/seawater under industrially relevant current densities.

Abstract:The synergistic effect and unique interfacial structure of ternary transition metal (Co, Ni, Fe) sulfides are significant in improving the catalytic performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the ultrathin Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S ternary sulfide nanoparticles (Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs) anchored in carbon bubble structure with rich pore structures (Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C) were firstly constructed via a cost-effective and general solid-phase synthesis strategy. Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C has a crystalline structure of Co 1−x S, accompanying the shift of diffraction peaks, which indicate the doping of nickel and iron atoms into Co 1−x S lattice. Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C catalyst has good OER activity with a low overpotential of 322 mV at 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, superior to single metal sulfide synthesized at the same conditions. More importantly, the Co 0.3 Ni 0.3 Fe 0.2 S NPs/C catalyst possesses excellent stability with a low current density decrease in the continuous 336 h I-t test. The good catalytic intrinsic activity may originate from the synergistic effect among the highly exposed Fe, Co, and Ni sulfide grown on the porous carbon bubbles and the unique reconstruction structure formed during the OER process. This work provides some reference significance for the systematic study of the synergistic effects between multicomponents and the relationship between interfacial modulation and OER.

Abstract:Reasonable design and preparation of non-noble metal electrocatalysts with predominant catalytic activity and long-term stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential for electrocatalytic water splitting. Ni foam (NF) is highlighted for its 3D porous structure, impressive conductivity and large specific surface area. Herein, nano/micro structured dendritic cobalt activated nickel sulfide grown on 3D porous NF (Co-Ni3S2/NF) has been successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. Due to the ingenious incorporation of Co, Co-Ni3S2/NF electrode shows auspicious electrocatalytic performance for OER compared with Ni3S2/NF electrode. As a result, Co-Ni3S2/NF needs overpotential of only 274 and 459 mV at current density of 10 and 50 mA cm(-2), respectively, while Ni3S2/NF requires overpotential of 344 and 511 mV. At potential of 2.0 V (vs. RHE), Co-Ni3S2/NF displays current density of 191 mA cm(-2), while Ni3S2/NF just attains current density of only 135 mA cm(-2). Moreover, Co-Ni3S2/NF demonstrates excellent stability for uninterrupted OER in alkaline electrolyte. The strategy of designing and preparing cobalt activated nickel sulfide grown on NF renders a magnificent prospect for the development of metal-sulfide-based oxygen evolution catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performances. Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are considered to be cornerstones of many energy conversion and storage technologies. It is difficult studying high-performance nonprecious materials as cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the OER and ORR in future practical applications. In this study, NiCo2S4 hollow spheres (NiCo2S4 HSs) were fabricated via an effective and facile one-pot "green" approach in an N, N-dimethylformamide-ethylene glycol binary solution. The obtained NiCo2S4 HSs had a high specific surface area as well as numerous active sites and showed a remarkable catalytic performance and durability toward both the OER and ORR in an alkaline electrolyte. For the ORR, NiCo2S4 HSs exhibited a positive half-wave potential of 0.80 V and demonstrated outstanding stability and enhanced methanol tolerance. For the OER, NiCo2S4 HSs presented a low overpotential (400 mV) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, small Tafel slope, and excellent stability in 0.1 M KOH. Moreover, regarding the overall electrocatalytic activity, the potential difference of NiCo2S4 HSs was 0.83 V, surpassing that of NiCo2S4 nanoparticles, binary counterparts (CoS, NiS), and most highly active bifunctional catalysts described in the literature. The superior catalytic performance of NiCo2S4 HSs is mainly ascribed to its unique hollow structure, which increases molecular diffusion and adsorption, as well as the synergistic effect of Ni and Co, which offers richer redox reaction sites. Importantly, this strategy may facilitate the design and preparation of excellent bifunctional nonprecious metal electrocatalysts in various domains.
Nickel sulfide-oxide heterostructured electrocatalysts: Bi-functionality for overall water splitting and in-situ reconstruction

Abstract:Bi-functional electrocatalysts are desired for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Herein, facile O2-plasma activation is introduced to improve the bi-functionality via constructing nickel sulfide-oxide heterostructures. Ni3S2-NiOx supported by nickel foam delivers obviously elevated HER and OER activity in comparison with pristine Ni3S2 and recently reported NiSx-based electrocatalysts, featured by the low overpotentials for HER (104 mV) and OER (241 mV) at ± 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH, as well as a voltage of 1.52 V for overall water splitting. As revealed by in-situ Raman spectroscopy, on the one hand, Ni(OH)2 generated from Ni3S2 during alkaline HER accelerates water dissociation toward the gradually improved performance; on the other hand, this heterostructure undergoes extensive oxidation during OER, leading to excessive NiOOH covering on Ni3S2 and thereby declining activity. These changes are interpreted by the distinct thermodynamic relationship under specific electrochemical conditions via density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:The design of efficient, environmentally friendly, stable and low-cost oxygen evolution electrocatalyst is the technical difficulty to realize the commercial application of water electrolysis. Here, we have developed a novel 3D electrocatalyst to grow Ni3Se4/Fe(PO3)2 composite on nickel foam (NF) in a short time of 80 s by a simple electrodeposition method, which not only effectively prevents the agglomeration of Ni3Se4, but also reduces the size of Fe(PO3)2 particles from micron level to nanometer level, exposes more electroactive sites. The Fe(PO3)2 with low crystalline structure and the crystalline Ni3Se4 can form a unique heterostructure to produce strong electron coupling and synergistic effect for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, which effectively improves the intrinsic activity of Ni/FeOOH active sites. The Ni3Se4/Fe(PO3)2/NF composites as catalysts can achieve a low overpotential of 188 mV in alkaline media at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec-1, exhibiting excellent OER catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:In the field of electrocatalysis, most of the electrodes have the problem of poor mechanical properties, which leads to the electrode can not be used on a large scale. At present, most bulk electrodes are used to study their mechanical properties due to their unique phase composition distribution and facile fabricate methods. But their novel properties in the field of electrocatalysts have not been fully developed. Multi-element bulk electrodes not only diversified the electronic states, but also build complex surface morphology by different dissolution rate between multi-phase distribution. In this paper, we synthesized the FeNiMo bulk electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with two-phase coexistence of Mo-doped face center cubic phase (FCC) and Mo-rich intermetallic compound (IMC) phase. During cyclic voltammetry activation, the surface reconstruction of Mo-rich IMC phases generated by ion leaching leaves Fe-Ni pore structures with more active area, which enhances OER performance. Meanwhile, the electron states get more diverse on the surface of remaining FCC phases due to Mo doping, which provides more suitable sites for four-step OER process. The FeNiMo electrode shows an ultra-low overpotential of 212 mV and 293.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and 100 mA cm(-2) , respectively. Moreover, it can maintain stability at 100 mA cm(-2) for up to 72 h. This work provides a strategy for studying the relationship between phase composition and electrochemical performance of alloy bulk electrodes.

Abstract:This study employed a one-step hydrothermal process to synthesize Ni3S2/Fe3O4 nanoblocks in situ on nickel foam (NF). The resulting Ni3S2/Fe3O4/NF catalyst demonstrates exceptional electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and robust long-term stability. It achieves a low overpotential of only 220 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a Tafel slope of 54.1 mV dec(-1) and remains stable in 1.0 M KOH for 66 h. The binder -free self-supported three-dimensional nanoblocks enhance the reaction region and long-term stability. Electronic interactions between Fe3O4 and Ni3S2, coupled with heterogeneous interfaces, optimize the electronic structure, fostering the formation of highly reactive species. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that Ni3S2/Fe3O4, with a heterogeneous interfacial structure, modulates the chemisorption of reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface, optimizing the Gibbs free energies (Delta G) of oxygen-containing intermediates. The synergistic effect between the two active materials within the heterogeneous structure enhances OER catalytic performance. This finding offers a valuable approach to designing efficient and stable OER electrocatalysts.
