Abstract:Spectral reflectance detection of the targeted object is considered a vital inherent optical property for its potential to provide abundant spectral information, which is crucial in underwater spectral imaging. However, the coarse condition of the underwater environment due to turbidity causes extreme distortions in spectral reflectance detection due to the high absorption and scattering of light. To cope with the effects of light degradation on underwater spectral reflectance detection accuracy, the rate of the impacts of turbidity on spectral reflectance should be examined thoroughly. Therefore, we utilize a stare-type underwater spectral imaging system based on a liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF) to study the effects of turbidity in underwater spectral imaging of various colored bodies. To examine the accuracy of underwater spectral reflectance detection based on escalating turbidity, the paper models the rate of increase in scattering intensity of the water body. Results show that, based on the non-linear increase in the pixel response of the black and white board, the rapid upsurge in scattering intensity occurs between 400nm to 500nm at different turbidity levels. Additionally, the spectral reconstruction of color bodies relative to the black and white board shows the maximum absolute deviation of 5.3% in spectral reflectance detection accuracy under varying turbidity. While employing underwater spectral imaging, the above findings of optimal band selection can find significant applications to improve the quality of underwater object detection.
Finite element modeling of light propagation in turbid media under illumination of a continuous-wave beam

Abstract:Spatially resolved spectroscopy provides a means for measuring the optical properties of biological tissues, based on analytical solutions to diffusion approximation for semi-infinite media under the normal illumination of an infinitely small light beam. The method is, however, prone to error in measurement because the actual boundary condition and light beam often deviate from that used in deriving the analytical solutions. It is therefore important to quantify the effect of different boundary conditions and light beams on spatially resolved diffuse reflectance in order to improve the measurement accuracy of the technique. This research was aimed at using finite element method (FEM) to model light propagation in turbid media, subjected to normal illumination by a continuous-wave beam of infinitely small or finite size. Three types of boundary conditions [i.e., partial current (PCBC), extrapolated (EBC), and zero (ZBC)] were evaluated and compared against Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, since MC could provide accurate fluence rate and diffuse reflectance. The effect of beam size was also investigated. Overall results showed that FEM provided results as accurate as those of the analytical method when an appropriate boundary condition was applied. ZBC did not give satisfactory results in most cases. FEM-PCBC yielded a better fluence rate at the boundary than did FEM-EBC, while they were almost identical in predicting diffuse reflectance. Results further showed that FEM coupled with EBC effectively simulated spatially resolved diffuse reflectance under the illumination of a finite size beam. A large beam introduced more error, especially within the region of illumination. Research also confirmed an earlier finding that a light beam of less than 1 mm diameter should be used for estimation of optical parameters. FEM is effective for modeling light propagation in biological tissues and can be used for improving the optical property measurement by the spatially resolved technique. Abstract:Multiple scattering is an inevitable effect in spaceborne oceanic lidar because of the large footprint size and the high optical density of seawater. The effective attenuation coefficient k(lidar) in oceanic lidar equation, which indicates the influence of the multiple scattering effect on the formation of lidar returns, is an important parameter in the retrieval of inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater. In this paper, the nonlinearity of k(lidar) and the relationships between k(lidar) and the IOPs of seawater are investigated by solving the radiative transfer equation with an improved semianalytic Monte Carlo model. k(lidar) is found to decrease exponentially with the increase of depth in homogeneous waters. k(lidar) is given as an exponential function of depth and IOPs of seawater. The results in this paper can help to have a better understanding of the multiple scattering effect of spaceborne lidar and improve the retrieval accuracy of the IOPs of seawater using spaceborne lidar.

Abstract:In this study we describe lab experiments on determining the above water reflectance Rrs coefficient, and the water attenuation coefficient Kd for fresh water. Different types of screens (totally absorbent, gray, etc.) were submerged in water (0-0.6 m) and illuminated from outside. The spectral density of the water leaving radiance was measured for different depths. The results were ran by a code which took into account the geometry of the incident irradiation, the geometry of the screen under water, and boundary conditions at the water surface provided by the radiation transfer theory. From the experimental data and our model we obtain the spectral distribution of the attenuation coefficient for fresh water and compared it with other data in literature. These experiments, performed in the Nonlinear Wave Lab at ERAU# represent just a preliminary calibration of the experimental protocol. More tests with water of different degrees of turbidity, and possibly wave filed at the water surface are in progress and will be presented in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract:With the development of marine research and exploitation, underwater optical communications have been widely used in numerous scenes. However, seawater would absorb and scatter the optical signal, causing the energy attenuation and the time-domain broadening of the pulse. In this work, based on the basic optical properties of seawater, the Monte Carlo method is applied to simulate the energy attenuation and the time-domain response of the light pulse in relatively turbid waters. The feasibility of optical communication in relatively turbid waters is estimated, with an interesting finding that the requirement for optical link alignment can be significantly relaxed in turbid waters.

Abstract:The detection and prediction of changes in coastal ecosystems require a better understanding of the complex physical, chemical and biological interactions, which involves that observations should be performed continuously. For this reason, there is an increasing demand for small, simple and cost-effective in situ sensors to analyze complex coastal waters at a broad range of scales. In this context, this study seeks to explore the potential of beam attenuation spectra, c(λ), measured in situ with an advanced-technology optical transmissometer, for assessing temporal and spatial patterns in the complex estuarine waters of Alfacs Bay (NW Mediterranean) as a test site. In particular, the information contained in the spectral beam attenuation coefficient was assessed and linked with different biogeochemical variables. The attenuation at λ = 710 nm was used as a proxy for particle concentration, TSM, whereas a novel parameter was adopted as an optical indicator for chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration, based on the local maximum of c(λ) observed at the long-wavelength side of the red band Chl-a absorption peak. In addition, since coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) has an important influence on the beam attenuation spectral shape and complementary measurements of particle size distribution were available, the beam attenuation spectral slope was used to analyze the CDOM content. Results were successfully compared with optical and biogeochemical variables from laboratory analysis of collocated water samples, and statistically significant correlations were found between the attenuation proxies and the biogeochemical variables TSM, Chl-a and CDOM. This outcome depicted the potential of high-frequency beam attenuation measurements as a simple, continuous and cost-effective approach for rapid detection of changes and patterns in biogeochemical properties in complex coastal environments.
Propagation properties of two types of sinc Schell-model beams in oceanic turbulence

Abstract:The evolution of two types of sinc Schell-model (SSM) beams, each considered with both circular and rectangular symmetries, is investigated during their propagation in oceanic turbulence. The expressions for the spectral intensity and spectral coherence of the transmitted optical field are derived using the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. Based on these expressions, numerical simulations are carried out to explore how source and turbulence parameters influence the transmitted field. The results demonstrate that the spectral intensity distribution of the SSM1 beam evolves from an initial Gaussian profile into a circular or rectangular flat-topped shape during propagation, while the SSM2 beam develops into a ring-shaped or array-like pattern. As the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy decreases, or the mean square temperature dissipation rate and the strength of temperature and salinity fluctuations increase, the energy of these beams disperses from its concentrated regions to the surrounding areas, causing the characteristic intensity distributions to become blurred. Additionally, the coherence of these beams exhibits oscillatory distributions, with the SSM2 beam showing stronger oscillations compared to the SSM1 beam and displaying greater sensitivity to changes in turbulence parameters. The intensity and coherence distributions are also affected by source parameters, which play a dominant role at shorter propagation distances. However, as the distance increases, turbulence parameters gradually become the primary influence. The results presented here may be applied to oceanic optical communication and remote sensing.

Abstract:Attenuation measurements of an He-Ne laser beam in suspensions of polystyrene latex spheres are presented. Measurements were performed with a transmissometer having a receiver with a variable field of view (FOV) in a lenspinhole geometry. Attenuation measurements taken with different fields of view for any fixed optical depth, enabled us to separate the scattered received power P s and the beam-attenuated power P 0 from the total received power P. In this way the true value τ of the optical depth was obtained from P 0 and compared with the apparent optical depth τA obtained from P. Thus the error ε = (τ − τA)/τ due to the contribution of scattered received power in attenuation measurements was investigated. Many measurements were taken in order to see how τA and ε vary with the optical depth, with the size of the diffusing spheres and with geometric arrangement (radius and angular FOV of the receiver, distance between scattering cell and receiver).

Abstract:The propagation of light underwater is tied closely to the optical properties of water. In particular, the underwater channel imposes attenuation on the optical signal in the form of scattering, absorption, and turbulence. These attenuation factors can lead to severe spatial and temporal dispersion, which restricts communication to a limited range and bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a statistical model to estimate the probability density function of the temporal dispersion in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) based Internet of Underwater Things (IoUTs) using discrete histograms. The underwater optical channel is modeled using Monte Carlo simulations, and the effects of temporal dispersion are presented by measuring the magnitude response of the channel in terms of received power. The temporal response analysis is followed by an extensive performance evaluation in terms of bit error rate (BER). To facilitate in-depth theoretical analysis, we have measured and presented magnitude response and BER of the channel under different field-of-views (FoVs), apertures, and water types. The three main areas under study are (i) BER versus link distance behavior, (ii) temporal response of the channel, and (iii) effect of scattering on photon travel. Our study shows the two main factors that contribute to beam spreading and temporal dispersion are (i) diffusivity of the optical source and (ii) multiple scattering. Furthermore, our results suggest that temporal dispersion caused due to multiple scattering cannot be mitigated completely; however, it can be minimized by optimizing the receiver aperture.

Abstract:Monte-Carlo numerical simulation (MCNS) is used to study the characteristics of an underwater scattering channel for an LED source in different types of water. The high scattering effect of turbid water significantly dispersed the signal's intensity distribution and broadened the half power angle. An empirical path loss model is proposed and was proved effective by simulations in different types of water. Abstract:A recently developed Standard-Model Extension (SME) formalism for neutrino oscillations that includes Lorentz and CPT violation is used to analyze the sidereal time variation of the neutrino event excess measured by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment. The LSND experiment, performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, observed an excess, consistent with neutrino oscillations, of ${\bar\nu}_e$ in a beam of ${\bar\nu}_\mu$. It is determined that the LSND oscillation signal is consistent with no sidereal variation. However, there are several combinations of SME coefficients that describe the LSND data; both with and without sidereal variations. The scale of Lorentz and CPT violation extracted from the LSND data is of order $10^{-19}$ GeV for the SME coefficients $a_L$ and $E \times c_L$. This solution for Lorentz and CPT violating neutrino oscillations may be tested by other short baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, such as the MiniBooNE experiment.

A Fast Monte Carlo Simulation Method for Underwater Wireless Optical Channels with Large Attenuation Length.

Abstract:In this work, a fast Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method is proposed to deal with the common problem of lengthy simulation time in underwater wireless optical channels with large attenuation lengths. By conducting plenty of simulations and experiments, the linear relationship between the received optical power (ROP) and reception area under large attenuation length has been observed, analyzed, and experimentally verified. Specifically, when using laser diodes (LDs) as light sources, the ROPs exhibited a linearly increasing trend as the detector diameter varied from 10 cm to 200 cm for a transmission distance of 12 m in harbor water. When using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources, a similar linear relationship held for transmission distances longer than 20 m, 10 m, and 5 m in clear water, coastal water, and harbor water, respectively. After that, our experiment also confirmed that as the water became increasingly turbid, even through only a 20-cm water body, the LD beam spot tended to homogenize. By adding 3-gram Mg(OH) 2 powder and within a measured radial displacement of ±5 cm, the normalized ROP difference would not exceed 5%. In summary, such a linear relationship can be applied to shorten the MC simulation time by simply increasing the reception area of detectors. It is greatly beneficial to the rapid design of underwater wireless optical communication systems that can support a long transmission distance or work in relatively turbid waters.

Abstract:The underwater scattering channel for line-of-sight (LOS) underwater optical wireless communications in the transmission window (wavelength of 400nm-600nm) is modeled by a ray tracing technique. The inherent seawater optical properties, the scattering and absorption of the suspending particles, are represented by one single parameter-chlorophyll concentration (CC). Path losses for different waters and different ranges are simulated. The influences of some system parameters, such as beam divergence, field of view, and misalignment, to the link path loss are studied. The communication bit-error-rate performance is evaluated based on simulated path losses.

Abstract:In order to mitigate the stochastic interference of underwater channels and improve the quality of underwater communication systems, it is essential to study the performance of the underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) links utilizing vortex beams with unique attributes. In this paper, the analytical formulae for the bit error rate (BER) and the average capacity of the UWOC link with diffraction-free Lommel beam are derived under the Rytov theory. Simulation results demonstrate that the system with a long wavelength, a high system signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), a small asymmetric parameter and receiving aperture diameter achieves a high average capacity and a low BER. Furthermore, in the underwater channel with a larger kinetic energy dissipation rate per unit mass of fluid and inner scale, a smaller mean-squared temperature dissipation rate, temperature salinity contribution ratio and transmission distance, the performance of the communication link can be improved. Meanwhile, it is found that the performance of the link with carrier Lommel beam are less sensitive to the topological charge, the scaling factor of the beam and the turbulent outer scale. These findings provide theoretical support for the design and implementation of an UWOC link utilizing the Lommel beam.

Abstract:Due to the uneven distribution of the underwater laser transmission channels, the transmission beam will be affected by water absorption and scattering effects, which induce inter-symbol interference and the degradation of link performance. Based on the binomial Henyey–Greenstein scattering phase function and considering the forward and backward effects, the pulse response expression of the non-line-of-sight underwater laser channel is derived. The effectiveness of the underwater photon transmission channel model established is simulated and verified by the Monte Carlo method. The fitting effects in the coastal waters between the theoretical calculation value of channel impulse response and simulation are better. Under the same simulation parameters, the pulse-broadening factor in coastal waters is higher than that in harbor waters, and the time-domain broadening effect of laser pulse transmission in harbor waters is large. When the asymmetry factor is large, the influence of front scattering on pulse broadening is greater.

Abstract:A comprehensive multiparameter model is proposed for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) channels to integrate the effects of absorption, scattering, and dynamic turbulence. The simulation accuracy is further improved by the combined use of the subharmonic method and the strict sampling constraint method by comparing the phase structure function with the theoretical value. The average light intensity and scintillation index are analyzed using the channel parameters of absorption, scattering, turbulence, flow velocity, and transmission distance. Under weak or medium turbulence, the bit error rate (BER) performance can be effectively improved by increasing the transmitting light power. The power penalty of a 50 m UWOC channel is 5.8 dBm from pure seawater to ocean water and 1.0 dBm from weak turbulence to medium turbulence, with the BER threshold of 10−6.

Abstract:This paper aims to address the challenges of short optical communication distances and high Bit Error Rates (BERs) caused by seawater absorption, scattering, and underwater turbulence. This paper establishes an optical communication channel model based on the Monte Carlo method and simulates and analyzes the process of received optical power attenuation when light is transmitted underwater due to absorption and scattering. The simulation model focuses on the influence of seawater type, transmission distance, receiver position, and angle on the received optical power attenuation. The results of this simulation will provide theoretical support for the development of prototype underwater optical communication systems and experiments in complex environments. To solve the long-range weak signal reception and processing issues in underwater optical wireless communication systems, this paper proposes the design and implementation of an underwater optical wireless communication system using optimized on-off keying high-power light-emitting diode/laser diode modulation technology and avalanche photodiode (APD)/photomultiplier (PMT) receiver modules. In addition, this paper describes the design of the underwater optical communication host computer software, which provides functions such as mode selection, BER monitoring, and file transfer. To test the performance of the proposed system, this paper conducts experiments in a 35 m long pool, fixed platform, and underwater mobile platform, as well as cross-air-water interface optical communication performance test experiments in a complex hydrological environment. The results show that the system achieved a 35 m underwater medium communication distance, transmission rate of 5–20 Mbps, and cross-domain wireless optical communication function under the condition of a BER of less than 10−6. The experiments also revealed that the communication distance decreases as the turbidity of the water body increases and the PMT receiver module selected at the receiver end has a longer communication distance than the APD receiver module. Overall, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed technology for underwater optical communication systems in complex waters, providing theoretical and data support for the next engineering practice.

Abstract:Underwater LED light sources are commonly implemented in array configurations with a wide-angle field of view, primarily catering to high-speed communication within a few meters. To increase transmission distance and mitigate oceanic turbulence effects, this paper focuses on the spatial coherence analysis of narrow-beam partially coherent light-emitting diode (PCLED) arrays, examining their average light intensity distribution, beam width, and spatial coherence during oceanic transmission. Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel integral, the optical field models and spatial characteristics of the radial PCLED array are derived under oceanic conditions, considering parameters such as water attenuation coefficient, kinetic energy dissipation rate, temperature dissipation rate, temperature-to-salinity ratio, as well as the radial filling factor and the sub-beam spatial coherence length of the light source at different transmission distances. The simulations show that, as the spatial coherence length of the sub-beam decreases from hundreds to a few micrometers, the combining distance of the beam arrays also decreases. This reduction in coherence results in the average light intensity distribution degrading into a Gaussian-like distribution, with a significant five-fold decrease in peak intensity. Furthermore, the width of the array spreads, starting from distances of 7 m and 0 m, respectively. The radial PCLED beam array, with its sub-beam spatial coherence length inside micrometers, possesses inherent characteristics that suppress turbulence effects and has future extensive possibilities in the ocean.
