Abstract:The Journal of School Nursing, Ahead of Print. Adolescents with food allergies (FA) face unique challenges, including an increased risk of bullying, yet comprehensive national studies on this intersection are lacking. Our study examines the prevalence and association between FA and bullying among US high-school adolescents, utilizing Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2015–2019) data. Analyzing responses from 27,781 adolescents, we found that 19.1% reported on-campus bullying, and 14.9% reported electronic bullying, while 15.8% reported FA. Food allergy was significantly more common among those who reported bullying (23% vs. 13.9%, p < .001). Logistic regressions revealed that adolescents with FA were more likely to experience on-campus (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.51, 95% CI 1.35–1.69) and electronic bullying (AOR 1.42, 95% CI 1.27–1.58) compared to their peers without FA. These findings underscore the vital role of school nurses in identifying and addressing bullying among FA adolescents, thereby ensuring supportive environments, promoting well-being, and fostering academic success.

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Psychosomatic Symptoms of Bullying in Chinese Adolescents in Three Provinces: a Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:BackgroundThe risk factors and effects of bullying are well recognised in many countries, but evidence from China is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of traditional bullying and cyberbullying in Chinese middle school children (aged 12–15 years) and the psychosomatic symptoms associated with bullying.MethodsA cross-sectional survey using a self-completion questionnaire was done in middle schools in urban and rural Zhejiang, Henan, and Chongqing provinces. In the schools, research assistants introduced the purpose and content of the survey, distributed the questionnaire and stayed in the classroom to respond to any queries. Ethical approval was obtained from the Medical Ethics Committee of Zhejiang University, School of Public Health, Hangzhou, China.FindingsFrom May 20 to Sept 25, 2018, 12 schools in total participated. 3774 questionnaires were completed: the mean age of respondents was 13·58 years (SD 0·87 years). For traditional bullying, 1332 (35·3 % identified as victims, and 341 (9·0% as perpetrators. For cyberbullying, 1170 (31·0%) identified as victims, and 622 (16·5%) as perpetrators. After adjusting for confounders, risk factors for traditional victimisation or perpetration were male sex, rural residence, low academic performance, and a poor relationship with parents. Risk factors for being a victim or perpetrator of cyberbullying were male sex, boarding at school, and a poor relationship with parents. In terms of psychosomatic symptoms, 491 (13·0%) reported they often had headache, 607 (16·1%) abdominal pain, and 597 (15·8%) sleep problems. Traditional victims and cyber victims were more likely to have frequent headaches (adjusted odds ratio 1·3, 95% CI 1·2–1·5 for traditional victims; 1·5, 1·3–1·8 for cyber victims) and frequent abdominal pain (1·2, 1·1–1·4 for traditional victims; 1·3, 1·1–1·5 for cyber victims). Traditional victims (1·3, 1·1–1·5), traditional bullies (1·3, 1·0–1·6), and cyber victims (1·6, 1·4–1·9) were more likely to have frequent sleep problems.InterpretationThe prevalence of bullying among Chinese adolescents is high and it is associated with psychosomatic conditions. Abstract:Bullying is a serious public health issue among children and adolescents in the United States. Existing national data sources provide limited current information about involvement in bullying among youth. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of parent-reported bullying victimization and perpetration among U.S. children and adolescents ages 6–17 years using nationally representative data, and to examine health-related factors associated with bullying experiences. We conducted secondary data analysis of the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, and stratified the sample by age (6–11 years, 12–17 years). We performed bivariate analyses to examine prevalence of bullying experiences according to demographic characteristics, health conditions, health behaviors, health services, and family environment. Using multivariable logistic regressions, we assessed the association between these factors and bullying experiences. Results showed that 22.7% of U.S. children and adolescents were bullied by others and 6.4% bullied others. The rate of bullying victimization was slightly higher among 6–11 year olds than among 12–17 year olds (24.1 vs. 21.1%, p = 0.011). The rate of bullying perpetration was 7.2% among children and 5.6% among adolescents but the difference between age groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.086). Several health conditions and health services factors were associated with either bullying victimization or perpetration, including special health care needs, internalizing problems, behavior or conduct problems, speech or other language disorders, autism, and unmet need for mental health treatment or counseling. Bullying victimization was also strongly associated with bullying perpetration.

Self-reported Patterns of Childhood Abuse and COVID-19 Related Depression and Problematic Behaviors in Adolescents: A Longitudinal Study from China

Abstract:Background: Extant studies have examined the role of childhood abuse experiences in adolescents' mental and behavioral reactions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it remained unclear whether different childhood abuse patterns had sensitizing or steeling effects on these psychological and behavioral problems. Objective: To elucidate the sensitizing or steeling effect of childhood abuse on subsequent adverse experiences, the current study examined patterns of childhood abuse and assessed their effects on adolescents' depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Participants and setting: In total, 1890 adolescents (969 females, mean age 14 years; 187 from a single-parent family, 858 were the only child in their family) were selected to complete self-report questionnaires at three time points (November 2019, November 2020, and November 2021). Methods: Latent profile analysis was used to identify patterns of childhood abuse, and linear regression analysis was used to assess the predictive effects of childhood abuse patterns on depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Results: The latent profile analysis identified five distinct groups: high physical/emotional abuse group, moderate physical/emotional abuse group, high emotional abuse group, ambivalent abuse group, and low physical/emotional abuse group. Compared with those in the low physical/ emotional abuse group, adolescents in the high and moderate physical/emotional abuse groups had a lasting positive association with problematic behaviors, and adolescents in the ambivalent abuse group had a long-term positive association with depressive symptoms during the pandemic. Conclusions: Preexisting childhood abuse had a sensitizing rather than a steeling effect on depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Furthermore, the longterm sensitizing effects mainly occurred in the high and moderate physical/emotional abuse and ambivalent abuse groups.

Abstract:Background: There are few studies on bullying in skin diseases. Persons with skin diseases are especially prone to bullying. Objectives: This component of the project 'Bullying among Dermatologic Patients' aimed to study the prevalence and nature of bullying in patients with skin diseases from different countries and age groups. Methods: Data were collected from participants of international social media groups for patients with skin diseases, in-patients and out-patients with skin diseases, and parents of children with skin diseases from six European countries. School and university students from Poland and Ukraine were asked to answer the question: Have you been bullied because of skin problems? Results: Bullying was reported in 1016 patients with 36 different skin diseases. Prevalence of self-reported and parental-reported bullying was quite heterogeneous among different countries In total, self-reported bullying was noted by 25.6% of patients with skin diseases during face-to-face consultations, by 63.7% of respondents from international patients' groups and by 12.2% of school and university students. Parental-reported bullying was detected in 34.5% of 3-4 years old children with skin diseases. The peak of bullying prevalence occurred between the ages of 13 and 15. The most prevalent forms of bullying were verbal abuse and social isolation. Physical abuse was the least often reported form of bullying. Only 33.2% of participants talked to anyone about being bullied. Negative long-term effects of bullying were reported by 63% of respondents. Conclusions: Skin disease-related bullying was reported by patients in all centres of the project. The main manifestations of bullying were similar in different countries and among patients with different skin diseases. International activities aimed to decrease or prevent skin disease-related bullying in different age groups are needed. These activities should be multidirectional and target teachers, parents of classmates and classmates of children with skin diseases, patients' parents and patients themselves.

Abstract:Bullying, traditional or cyber, among adolescents, is a public health concern. In this study, we explored frequencies and correlates of different forms of bullying among Connecticut high-school students. Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from 2019 from Connecticut adolescents (N = 1814) were used. χ 2 tests and survey-weighted logistic regressions examined relationships between bullying subgroups (in-school traditional bullying (ISTB) only, cyberbullying only, and both) and mental concerns, risk behaviors, academic performance, physical health, and receipt of social support, with the logistic regressions adjusted for demographics. The past-12-month frequency of having experienced only cyberbullying was 5.6%, only ISTB was 9.1%, and both forms was 8.7%. Between-group differences were observed by bullying status in terms of sex and race/ethnicity. In adjusted models, bullying status was associated with suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, self-harm, depression/dysphoria, mental health, use of alcohol, marijuana, injection drugs, tobacco, and e-vapor, gambling, driving under influence of alcohol, high-risk sexual behavior, physical fights, weapon-carrying, injuries/threats at school, feeling unsafe at school, dating violence, obesity, poor general health, insecure housing, less perceived family support, and poor academic performance. People experiencing both types of bullying were typically more likely to report adverse measures. High-school students commonly report bullying. The findings that both forms (traditional and cyber) were more robustly linked to negative experiences highlight the need for examining further relationships between types and patterns of bullying and mental health and functioning. Better understanding may help improve preventive anti-bullying interventions.

Dermatology in Contemporary Times: Building Awareness of Social Media's Association With Adolescent Skin Disease and Mental Health

Abstract:Background: The contribution of psychological disorders to the burden of skin disease has been poorly explored in adolescent patients. The review aims to provide insights into the psychological, social, occupational, and social medias' association with acne, atopic dermatitis (AD), and aesthetics in adolescent patients. Methods: The project used a modified Delphi process comprising face-to-face discussions followed up online. The systematic literature search results informed the 14 draft statements. During an expert panel meeting, the draft statements underwent the panel's evaluation at a workshop, followed by a plenary discussion adopting five statements using evidence from the literature coupled with the panel's opinions and experiences. Results: Studies reported an association between poor sleep, social impairment, and mental health disorders, including body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) with acne or AD in adolescents with acne or AD. Education for patients and parents may improve self-management skills and self-responsibility, promoting better outcomes for acne and AD. The use of certain types of social media can contribute to unrealistic expectations regarding the outcomes of cosmetic procedures. Social media use may also be associated with, and potentially contribute to unrealistic appearance expectations and certain mental health conditions. However, social media use may have benefits, such as connection, diversity, social support, increased self-esteem, safe identity experimentation, and an increased opportunity for self-disclosure. Conclusions: The association with negative life events, BDD, suicidal ideation, depression, and anxiety are thought to be high for adolescent patients with acne or AD. Using social media for information has both positive and negative aspects. Awareness of the risks and benefits of receiving health information about dermatological disease among adolescents needs to be improved through the education of patients and clinicians. Abstract:This study examined whether there is a difference in children's psycho-social development variables according to the presence of children's atopic dermatitis symptoms, and analyzed the relationship among variables. This study aims to explore the differences in young children's problem behavior, peer interaction, and school readiness according to the presence of atopic dermatitis symptoms and to investigate the relationship among variables. A total of 1502 children whose are aged six years were considered as subject for this study out of which 232 children’s had atopic dermatitis symptoms and the remaining 1270 did not have this symptoms. The research instruments were used the children problem behavior scale, peer interaction scale, and school readiness scale. In the research results, it was found that the level of problem behavior internalization and externalization in the children with atopic dermatitis symptoms was higher than that of no-symptom children. Meanwhile, according to the presence or absence of atopic dermatitis symptoms, it was found that there was no difference between peer interaction and preschool school readiness. In addition, the externalization variable of the problem behavior of children with atopic dermatitis symptoms was found to have a negative effect on school readiness, and peer interaction was found to have a positive effect on school readiness. Children with symptoms of atopic dermatitis can be studied advance by taking this study as the basic data for guiding them also for coping the psychological developmental problem.
Social–emotional functioning among bias-based bullies, victims, and bully-victims.

Abstract:Bias-based harassment in U.S. schools is an increasingly significant concern for students' well-being. Although research on bullying broadly defined has indicated that the ways in which youth are involved in bullying (i.e., as bullies, victims, and bully-victims) are differentially associated with functioning, this study adds to extant research by exploring whether similar patterns emerge for bias-based harassment. A nationally representative sample of 639 adolescents, ages 13-17, completed online surveys in 2021 that included measures of bias-based harassment, anxiety, depression, substance use, and school social support. Findings from a multivariate latent variable model indicated that after controlling for demographic variables, compared to individuals not involved in bias-based harassment, students involved as victims, perpetrators, or both victims and perpetrators of bias-based harassment (i.e., bias-based bully-victims) reported more mental health symptoms. Substance use was elevated for bias-based perpetrators and bully-victims, whereas school social support was diminished for bias-based victims and bully-victims. Notably, bias-based bully-victims had the highest levels of anxiety symptoms and substance use, and lowest levels of school social support, among all adolescents. Findings highlight that involvement in bias-based harassment in any capacity is associated with deleterious functioning, with bias-based bully-victims reporting particularly adverse functioning across domains. Bolstering protective factors such as school social support would be a useful component of school practices and prevention programs related to bias-based harassment. Relationships among Behavior Problem, Peer Interaction, and Parental Factors in Young Boys and Girls with Atopic Dermatitis

Abstract:The present study examined differences in children's behavior problems and peer interaction, and parental factors including self-esteem, depression and childrearing stress between atopic dermatitis(AD) and normal(non-AD) children in each gender, and analyzed the effects of the parental factors on the two variables of AD children. 165 AD and 1176 non-AD children of age 5 were selected from the 6th year data of the Panel Study on Korean Children. The results from t-test and multiple regression are as follows. First, only AD boys showed a higher level of behavior problems than non-AD boys, but peer interaction showed no difference between AD and non-AD groups. Compared with non-AD children's parents, mothers of AD children showed a higher stress level and mothers of AD boys had a higher depression level. But there were no differences in maternal self-esteem and paternal factors between the groups. Second, AD boys' behavior problems were related to maternal factors and paternal stress, and some characteristics of AD girls' behavior problems were related with some parental variables. But peer interaction of AD children had no relation with parental factors. Third, behavior problems were influenced by maternal stress in AD boys and influenced by maternal depression and parental self-esteem in AD girls.
Extracurricular activities and bullying perpetration and victimisation in early and middle adolescence

Abstract:The present study examined the association between adolescents' extracurricular activities and bullying perpetration and victimisation. The sample was drawn from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health dataset. Analyses included descriptive statistics and logistic regression for the early adolescent and middle adolescent groups. Among early adolescents, sports were negatively associated with victimisation. Participation in clubs/organisations, organised activities or lessons, and community services were negatively associated, while employment was positively related to bullying perpetration. Among middle adolescents, all extracurricular activities were negatively related to victimisation. As for bullying perpetration, organised activities or lessons and community services were negatively associated with bullying. The study highlights the potential for sport and extracurricular involvement as ways to possibly deter bullying perpetration and victimisation. Future research should consider these associations longitudinally.

Effects of Bullying Forms on Adolescent Mental Health and Protective Factors: A Global Cross-Regional Research Based on 65 Countries

Abstract:Adolescent bullying is a public health issue of great global concern. Given the serious negative effect of bullying on adolescent mental health, it is critical to seek protective factors to protect adolescent mental health. From a global cross-regional perspective, the study aims to explore the relationship between forms of bullying and adolescent mental health and the role of parental support as a protective factor. Data were drawn from adolescents aged 12–17 years in 65 countries from the Global School-based Student Health Survey between 2003 and 2015. After controlling the state-fixed effects, individual adolescent behavior, and family factors, the ordinary least squares model was used to analyze the influence of bullying frequency and forms of bullying on adolescent mental health. The results found that the prevalence of bullying in the sample of 167,286 adolescents was 32.03%, with the highest prevalence of bullying in the sample countries in Africa. Verbal bullying had the highest prevalence and the most significant negative effect on adolescent mental health. The study also discussed the differences in bullying among adolescents by gender, age, and region. “Parental supervision”, “parental connectedness” and “parental bonding” played a positive and protective role in the mental health of adolescents who experienced bullying.

Factors Predicting In-School and Electronic Bullying among High School Students in the United States: An Analysis of the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System

Abstract:Background: Bullying is a global public health problem with severe adverse effects on behavioral health. Understanding the predictors of victimization by bullying is essential for public policy initiatives to respond to the problem effectively. In addition to traditional in-person bullying, electronic bullying has become more prevalent due to increasing social interaction and identity formation in virtual communities. This study aims to determine the predictors of in-school and electronic bullying. Methods: We employed multivariable logistic regression to analyze a nationally representative sample of 17,232 high school students in the United States, the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System national component. The survey was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, from September through December 2021. The factors examined included sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, race), appearance (obesity), physically active lifestyles (being physically active, spending a long time on digital games), and risk-taking behavior (using marijuana). Results: Our results indicated that sociodemographic characteristics were strong predictors of being bullied in school and electronically. Being obese is more likely to result in bullying in school (AOR = 1.32, p = 0.003) and electronically (AOR = 1.30, p = 0.004). Adolescent students showing marijuana use had higher odds of being bullied in school (AOR = 2.15, p < 0.001) and electronically (AOR = 1.81, p < 0.001). While spending a long time on digital devices raises the risk of being electronically bullied (AOR = 1.25, p = 0.014), being physically active is not associated with being bullied. Neither of the two lifestyle factors was associated with in-school bullying. Conclusions: Interventions addressing violence among adolescents can benefit from empirical evidence of risk factors for bullying victimization in high school.

Methods: Using the maximum difference sampling method, 15 adolescent patients were interviewed by psychologists and nurses, and the interview results were analyzed by topic induction. Results: Among the 15 participants, 12 (80%) felt helpless, 13 (86.7%) had serious negative emotions, and 10 (66.7%) felt anxious about personal growth. Based on the semi-structured interviews, the psychological states of participants were summarized into three themes: Helplessness, Severe negative emotions, and Anxiety about personal growth. Under the theme of serious negative emotions, it was further divided into three sub-themes: Frustration and Distrust, Rebellion, Insecurity and depression. These themes reflected the significant impact of school bullying on the psychological status of the participants. Conclusion: The internal experience of adolescent patients with mental disorders caused by school bullying mainly includes helplessness, serious negative emotions and anxiety about personal growth. It is recommended to evaluate and diagnose patients' existing and potential health problems individually during clinical treatment and care. On the basis of comprehensive assessment, psychological counseling should be provided and support from family and school should be sought to promote positive mental health and personal growth of adolescents. It is often defined as an unwelcome aggressive behavior that is repeatedly and habitually transmitted to others in the school environment. 1 School bullying is the interpersonal contradiction and conflict problem in the process of the socialisation of teenagers and is endangering the physical and mental health of teenagers across the globe. 2 Bullying occurs in both developing and developed countries. 3–5 According to a survey conducted by the China Youth Research Centre in 2015, 6.1% of surveyed students in primary and secondary schools were regularly bullied, while 32.5% were occasionally bullied. 6 In 2017, the findings of a Chinese school bullying survey showed that all victims of school bullying were subjected to varying degrees of physical or psychological harm. 7,8 Previous study reported that about 40% of students in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province participated in school bullying, of which 3.3% were bullies, 21.1% were victims, and 17.6% were bullies/victims. 9 A survey in seven provinces in China shows that 25% of the 3675 urban students are victims of school bullying. 10 The data only covers some provinces and cities in China, but it has been shocking and thought-provoking. Teenagers who are bullied are more likely to suffer from psychological disorders such as social phobia. School bullying increases the risk of a range of medical conditions, including anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as other health problems, such as suicide. 11 Studies have demonstrated a significant relationship between victims of school bullying and a variety of mental health problems, including somatic symptoms such as paranoia, post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety and depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. 12 Therefore, it is more necessary to actively intervene the mental health of adolescent patients with mental disorders caused by school bullying. Abstract:Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by pruritus and recurrent eczematous patches and plaques. It impacts sleep and its visibility can lead to stigmatisation, low self-esteem, social withdrawal, reduced quality of life (QOL), and psychological burden. This study explores the relationship between AD and mental health, including possible causation pathways. A literature review was conducted in PubMed without using limiters. AD carries higher odds of suicidality and an increased risk of depression, anxiety, alexithymia, and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) across all severities. While some studies report an association of AD with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and possibly autism spectrum disorder (ASD), others do not. There is increasing evidence that AD contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation and cognitive impairment (CI). Causative factors for mental health complications of AD likely include both psychosocial and biological variables. AD is associated with higher levels of cutaneous and circulating proinflammatory cytokines; these can breach the blood–brain barrier and trigger central nervous system events, including oxidative stress, neurotransmitter breakdown, altered serotonin metabolism, and reduced neurogenesis in several brain regions. Excessive inflammation in AD may thus contribute to CI, depression, and suicidality. AD providers should be vigilant about mental health.

Abstract:Victimization and perpetration of cyberbullying and traditional bullying are prevalent among adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aims of this study were to examine the role of social anxiety in victimization and perpetration of cyberbullying and traditional bullying in adolescents with ASD and ADHD in Taiwan. A total of 219 adolescents with ASD and 287 adolescents with ADHD aged 11–18 years and their caregivers were recruited from the child psychiatry outpatient clinics into this study. The associations of social anxiety with victimization and perpetration of cyberbullying and traditional bullying were examined using logistic regression analysis. The results indicated that after the effects of sex, age, and autistic social impairment were controlled, social anxiety increased the risk of being a victim of cyberbullying (Odds Ratios (OR) = 1.048; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.013–1.084), a victim of traditional bullying (OR = 1.066; 95% CI: 1.036–1.097), and a perpetrator of traditional bullying (OR = 1.061; 95% CI: 1.027–1.096) in adolescents with ASD. After the effects of sex, age, and ADHD symptoms were controlled for, social anxiety increased the risk of being a victim of traditional bullying in adolescents with ADHD (OR = 1.067; 95% CI: 1.039–1.096). Social anxiety was significantly associated with several forms of bullying involvement in adolescents with ASD and ADHD and warrants being considered into prevention and intervention programs for bullying involvement.

Abstract:This study examines the prevalence of bias-based bullying and the associations among bias-based bullying, negative effects, school avoidance, and supportive adults. Frequency analysis and moderated mediation analysis were conducted using a national sample of adolescents aged 12 to 18 in the U.S. from the 2015, 2017, and 2019 National Crime Victimization Survey School Crime Supplement. Among the adolescents who were bullied between 2015 and 2019 ( N = 629 in 2015, N = 1,179 in 2017, and N = 1,197 in 2019), 40.3% − 45.0% of them thought that bullying was related to their race, religion, ethnic origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation, or physical appearance. Among the adolescents who were bullied, the most frequently perceived reason was physical appearance (28.1% − 30.8%), followed by race (10.2% − 11.8%). The presence of supportive adults at school significantly moderates the mediational pathway between experiencing multiple forms of bias-based bullying and school avoidance through the negative effects of bullying.

Abstract:Background: Bullying in schools is a common problem that can have significant consequences on the mental health of both bullies and victims of bullying. Some estimates suggest that 30% of American youth are bullied. Self-reported incidence of depression, anxiety, and suicide attempts has been correlated with bullying. Victims may also suffer from a variety of somatic complaints such as headache, sleep disorders, and others. Youth surveys undertaken by Education or Public Health Departments in most US states are an underutilized resource in evaluating the problem and any consequences. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the association of being involved in bullying either as a victim and/or a bully on mental health and suicide ideation by analyzing data from the 2018 Iowa Youth Survey. The results will then be applied to the published anti-bullying literature to make suggestions for how anti-bullying programs may be designed. Methods: Data were obtained from the 2018 Iowa Youth Survey (IYS), which is a cross-sectional survey of 6th, 8th and 11th grade students. We chose two mental health questions as dependent variables and used a multivariable logistic regression analysis to evaluate the correlation between the two dependent variables and ten types of bullying included in the IYS. Since some respondents in the IYS were prescribed psychotropic medications to help with feeling angry, anxious, nervous, or sad, we adjusted for the use of psychotropic medication in our analysis. Similarly, the literature suggests that some students are both bullies and victims (bully-victims). Accordingly, we also adjusted for bully-victims. Results: Unadjusted Odds Ratios (ORs) showed that not all forms of bullying were correlated with a significant risk of mental distress. Physical bullying had comparatively little association (ORs < 1 or overlapped 1), while identity bullying on sexual orientation or gender identity or sexual joking was consistently correlated with significant ORs for feeling sad or hopeless and attempting suicide (ORs 1.40-2.84). Cyberbullying (ORs 1.32-1.70) and social bullying (ORs < 1-2.21) were correlated with mental distress with ORs generally between physical and identity bullying. When adjusting for medication use or bully-victim status, adjusted ORs (aORs) were generally lower than unadjusted ORs. Conclusions: Not all types of bullying were significantly correlated with feeling sad or hopeless or attempting suicide. Being able to evaluate the specific associations of different types of bullying may have implications for teachers or policy makers hoping to implement bullying mitigation strategies in their schools.
Risk of Mental Disorders in Children and Adolescents with Atopic Dermatitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Assessing the psychological effects on children and adolescents of suffering atopic dermatitis (AD) is essential, when planning successful management. This study aimed to systematically review the literature regarding risk of mental disorders in children and adolescents with, or without, AD; and to explore confounders. We identified potentially relevant studies from EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ERIC, the British Nursing Index, the Family and Society Studies Worldwide, the Social Work Abstracts, and the Sociological Abstracts from inception to Sep 30, 2018. Investigators independently screened titles and abstracts, and then full-texts. Investigators independently extracted data from included studies. Meta-analyses using random-effects models were performed, reporting odds ratios (ORs; 95% CIs). Thirty-seven studies (n = 2,068,911 children/ adolescents) were included. Meta-analysis of 35 studies found that children and adolescents with AD had significantly higher risk of total mental disorders than those without AD (OR = 1.652; 95% CI, 1.463–1.864). There was no significant difference in risks for ADHD (OR = 1.563; 95% CI, 1.382–1.769); sleep disorders (OR = 2.100; 95% CI, 1.322–3.336); anxiety (OR = 1.339; 95% CI, 1.062–1.687); depression (OR = 1.402 95% CI, 1.256–1.565); conduct disorder (OR = 1.494 95% CI, 1.230–1.815); or ASD (OR = 2.574; 95% CI, 1.469–4.510; Qb = 8.344, p = 0.138). Race/ethnicity of child, target of comparison, type of studies, representativeness of the sample, measures of AD and mental disorders were significant moderators for total mental disorders. Integrated, holistic, multidisciplinary management of pediatric AD is significantly important, which emphasizes the well-being of the whole person.
School bullying and its association with psychological wellbeing: findings of the Fujian Adolescent Mental Wellness Study (FAMWeS)

Abstract:Background: School bullying is becoming a prevalent phenomenon in China, posing a growing threat to the psychological well-being of children and adolescents. This study aims to examine bullying victimization and bullying behavior using data from FAMWeS (the Fujian Adolescent Mental Wellness Study), and how they impact emotional state and psychological distress. Method: The study conducted in entire Fujian Province, China, involved a cross-sectional questionnaire survey on adolescent students from secondary and high schools, employing multi-stage stratified cluster sampling methods from May to July 2023. Primary outcome measures were bullying victimization and bullying behavior. Emotional state was evaluated using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale for Youth (DASS-Y), and psychological distress was assessed using the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). Results: Analysis of 54,368 responses revealed that 19.3% of respondents reported being victims of bullying, 9.8% reported engaging in bullying behavior, and 8.1% reported experiencing both bullying victimization and engaging in bullying themselves. A minority were found to have depressive (19.1%), anxiety (22.0%), and stress (9.2%) symptoms. The presence of psychological distress was observed in 54.4% of the participants (GHQ score of 3-12). Significant associations were found between bullying victimization and the DASS-Y subscales of depression, anxiety, and stress. Odds ratios indicated a 1.75 times higher likelihood for depression (OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.55-1.99), 2.24 times higher for anxiety (OR 2.24, 95% CI 1.96-2.55), and 1.82 times higher for stress (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.73-1.91). Similarly, psychological distress measured by the GHQ was significantly associated with bullying victimization (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.73-1.91). Bullying behavior also showed significant associations with all DASS-Y subscales and psychological distress. Geographic disparities revealed varying rates across districts, while factors such as age, academic performance, and parental education emerged as significant influences on bullying victimization and behavior. Conclusion: The findings underscore a concerning prevalence of bullying victimization and behavior, highlighting the critical need for comprehensive anti-bullying strategies that address both victimization and perpetration dynamics. There is also a clear need for interventions targeting socio-economic disparities across various geographic regions.
