Abstract:Cubic SrTiO3 powders were synthesized by three methods: the polymerized complex (PC) method, the solid state reaction, and the milling assistant method. The samples obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectroscopy (UV–vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mean diameters of the as-synthesized SrTiO3 particles were 30nm by the polymerized complex method, 140nm by the solid state reaction, and 30nm by the milling assistant method. The photocatalytic activity of hydrogen evolution from water splitting over SrTiO3 powders by the polymerized complex method is higher than that by the solid state reaction and the milling assistant method. Particle size, uniformity of components, and particle aggregation extent affect the photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3 for hydrogen evolution. The best rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution over SrTiO3 by the polymerized complex method under UV illumination is as high as 3.2mmolh−1g−1.
Cu1.94S Nanocrystal Superstructure for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Ordered nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S nano superstructure are constructed and provide notably improved catalytic H2 evolution reaction performance at 2482.00 µmol g‒1 h‒1. Careful selection of metal organic framework precursors with long range metal ion alignments impact performance, as well-ordered superstructures give rise to uniform electromagnetic fields and organized interparticle interactions that facilitate charge carrier transport. These close packed nanoparticles with negatively charged carboxylate surfaces inhibit large [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 and triethanolamine transport outwards, but allow smaller H2O particles to enter superstructure interiors. In this case, separation happens not only between electrons and holes but also between reduction and oxidation zones. Abundant dangling bonds also form from the complex nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S structure and bulk aggregation of close packed Cu1.94S, up to hundreds of nanometers, provides abundant catalytic active sites.

Abstract:Surface and interface engineering of composite photocatalysts are effective ways to enhance the dynamics of photo-generated charge carriers. In this work, SrTiO3/Ti3C2 MXene (STO/TC) Schottky heterojunction is constructed by in-situ growth of SrTiO3 (STO) on Ti3C2 MXene (TC) through Sr(OH)2 etching the surfaces of TC. This in-situ growth strategy not only creates the tight chemically bonded interfaces by SrTiO3 nanoparticles uniformly anchoring on the surface of two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets for promoting the photo-generated charge carrier separation, but also introduces surface Ti vacancies as the efficient catalytic active sites to accelerate the charge carrier transfer process for efficient hydrogen production. The photocatalytic system constructed by interface and surface engineering optimizes the photo-generated charge carrier dynamics and refines the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance (6.8 times higher than pristine SrTiO3) and stability. This work is expected to provide an alternative strategy to construct highly efficient photocatalysts with hydrogen evolution.

Novel Amorphous NiCuSx H2-evolution Cocatalyst: Optimizing Surface Hydrogen Desorption for Efficient Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Cost-effective nickel sulfide has attracted great interest as a favorable cocatalyst for achieving highly-efficient photocatalytic activity, but its H2-evolution performance is still suppressed owing to the strong sulfurhydrogen bonds (S-Hads). In this study, the interfacial S-Hads bonds can be effectively weakened by the formation of the electron-rich active S sites via introducing Cu atoms into the amorphous NiSx cocatalyst. By use of a precursor-complexation photodeposition strategy, novel amorphous NiCuSx H2-evolution cocatalyst (a-NiCuSx) have been constructed and simultaneously anchored onto TiO2 to form a-NiCuSx/TiO2 photocatalysts. Photocatalytic results reveal that the optimized a-NiCuSx/TiO2 (3:1) photocatalyst (427.9 mu mol h-1, AQE = 34.67%) achieves an enhanced H2-generation activity compared to the a-NiSx/TiO2 (226.1 mu mol h-1). As investigated by density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the Cu heteroatom into a-NiSx can induce its charge redistribution to form electron-rich active S sites, thereby effectively weakening the S-Hads bonds to optimize hydrogen adsorption and accordingly boosting the photocatalytic H2-generation rate. This work offers a promising and rational method to optimize the catalytic centers of a H2-evolution cocatalyst, presenting great potential in designing highly-efficient photocatalyst for future scalable and sustainable H2 production.

Abstract:Exploring low-cost, high-efficiency, and stable photocatalysts is still a significant challenge. SrTiO 3 , one of the appealing photocatalysts, can meet most of the screening criteria except for its efficiency, which is restricted by its poor absorption of visible light and its prompt photogenerated carrier recombination. Recently, a two-dimensional transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 T x (2D MXene) has been found to serve as a co-catalyst due to its excellent metallic conductivity, hydrophilic property, large specific surface area, abundance of active sites, and low reaction barrier to hydrogen production. In this work, SrTiO 3 nanoparticles are rationally integrated with Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets via a simple hydrothermal process. The hydrogen production rate can achieve up to 3.43 mmol g −1 h −1 in the hybridization of SrTiO 3 -3 wt. % Ti 3 C 2 T x , which is almost six times that of SrTiO 3 alone. This remarkable enhancement arises predominantly from the Schottky contact between SrTiO 3 and Ti 3 C 2 T x , which can effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers and accelerate their separation. In addition, such enhancement benefits from the hydrogen evolution capacity of Ti 3 C 2 T x . This work opens an excellent prospect for constructing highly active, low-cost, and stable photocatalysts with 2D MXene and finding potential applications of 2D MXene in energy conversion fields.

Abstract:CuOx-NiO bimetallic oxides modified TiO2 catalysts were prepared via a precipitationphotoreduction approach for photocatalytic H-2 production. 0.9%Cu0.1%Ni/TiO2 exhibited the highest H2 evolution rate (about 55.4 umol/g/min) under UV visible light irradiation (350-780 nm), which is higher than the sum of Cu0x/TiO2 and NiO/TiO2 catalyst. Cu species exhibited more reducing valence state including Cu when deposited on NiO/TiO2 compared with deposited on TiO2. The polyvalent Cu species lead to enhanced photo current and reduced transfer resistance confirmed by photoelectron chemical analysis. CuOx-NiO modification of the TiO2 surface is beneficial for the photoexcited electron transfer, which suppresses electrons recombination. The lifetime of photoexcited electrons was enhanced greatly from 1.16 (TiO2) to 5.15 ns (CuOx-NiO/TiO2). A multiple electrons transfer mechanism for polyvalent bimetallic oxides co-modified TiO2 was proposed based on careful analysis. This work demonstrated a polyvalent bimetallic oxides modified TiO2 system with efficient photocatalytic H-2 production which can provide some insightful understanding for bimetallic metal oxides co -catalyst design and H-2 evolution mechanism. Abstract:TiO2/CdS porous hollow microspheres have been one-pot rapidly synthesized by a salt-assisted aerosol decomposition method, and exhibit an excellent photocatalytic activity of 996 μmol h(-1) (50 mg photocatalysts with loading Ru co-catalyst) for hydrogen evolution from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial reagents (SO3(2-) and S(2-)) under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). Its high photocatalytic performance is attributed to the surface morphology, crystallinity and heterostructures. The present facile method can be extended to fabricate other heterostructures consisting of oxides or sulfides.

Abstract:Schottky junction and p-n heterojunction are widely employed to enhance the charge transfer during the photocatalysis process. Herein, Cu and Cu3P co-modified TiO2 nanosheet hybrid (Cu–Cu3P/TiO2) was fabricated using an in situ hydrothermal method. The ternary composite achieved the superior H2 evolution rate of 6915.7 μmol g−1 h−1 under simulated sunlight, which was higher than that of Cu/TiO2 (4643.4 μmol g−1 h−1) and Cu3P/TiO2 (6315.8 μmol g−1 h−1) and pure TiO2 (415.7 μmol g−1 h−1). The enhanced activity can be attributed to the collaboration effect of Schottky junction and p-n heterojunction among Cu/TiO2 and Cu3P/TiO2, which can harvest the visible light, reduce the recombination of charge carriers and lower the overpotential of H2 evolution, leading to a fast H2 evolution kinetics. This work develops a feasible method for the exploration of H2 evolution photocatalyst with outstanding charge separation properties.

Abstract:Spherical Cu particles were successfully synthesized by a facile strategy at room temperature. The crystal phase and structure were characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM measurements. The physical mixing of the as-synthesized copper spheres with TiO2 nanoparticles could initial and promote solar-to-hydrogen evolution in methanol aqueous solution. TEM result showed that the partial of Cu co-catalyst attached on the surface of the host TiO2 nanoparticles, although the interface of TiO2-Cu non-existed in the synthetic process. On the basis of photo/electro-chemical measurements, it was proposed that charge transfer was accomplished via collisions between the TiO2 and Cu nanoparticles, which promoted charge separation and subsequently photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in the suspension.

Abstract:In recent years, metal–semiconductor heterojunctions have been intensively researched in the field of photocatalysis due to the effective spatial separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Here, the dual-functional copper (Cu0/Cu2+)-modified SrTiO3-δ nanosheets (Cu/STCO) are successfully synthesized by a two-step route. First, Cu2+-doped SrTiO3-δ (STCO) nanosheets are synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then Cu0 nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ formed from the STCO under H2 atmosphere at 500 °C. The optimized ratio 6 %-Cu/STCO photocatalyst exhibits the best photothermal catalytic performance for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and H2 evolution performance. The detailed characterization demonstrate that the Cu2+ dopant extend the light absorption range and the in situ generated Cu0 NPs effectively improve the separation ability of photogenerated charge carriers by forming the Schottky contact with STCO. The excited localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of metallic Cu0 in Cu/STCO shows a considerable catalysis performance even under 600 nm monochromatic light irradiation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the Cu/STCO diminishes the barrier of the rate-determining steps of the CO2RR and H2 evolution thus perform the outstanding catalysis ability in two filed. This work presents the synergistic effect of Cu0 and Cu2+ on enhancing the photothermal catalytic performance for CO2RR and H2 evolution and offers a novel strategy to synthesize the metal–semiconductor nanostructures for efficient harnessing of solar energy into fuel.

Abstract:Exploring sustainable noble-metal-free photocatalyst still remains a huge challenge for highly efficient and durable photocatalytic H2 production. In this work, Cu3P nanosheets were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method without using any organic solvents, and red phosphorus was used as the phosphorus source. A Z-scheme Cu3P/TiO2 photocatalyst without a noble metal was rationally fabricated to achieve UV–vis harvesting. Compared to TiO2, the optimized Cu3P/TiO2 photocatalyst displays much more excellent activity with the hydrogen evolution rate of 607.5 µmol h−1 g−1, which is 30.4 folds higher than that of bare TiO2 photocatalyst under solar light irradiation. The enhancement of charge carriers separation efficiency in Cu3P/TiO2 is demonstrated by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Moreover, The photo-induced charge-transfer route of Cu3P/TiO2 is a Z-scheme transfer mode confirmed by selective deposition of Pt nanoparticles, the photocatalytic decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB). In the Z-scheme system, the holes are left on the TiO2, and photo-exited electron will be enriched on Cu3P nanosheets for hydrogen evolution. This work will provide more insight into fabricating eco-friendly phosphide-based catalyst with efficient photocatalytic hydrogen property and sufficient durability for solar-to-chemical conversion and utilization.

Abstract:Exploiting highly efficient, noble metal-free, and ultra-small H-2-evolution cocatalysts is crucial to promoting the photocatalytic water splitting reaction. Herein, ultra-small non-crystalline CuxP nanodots (CuxP-ND) as an efficient H-2-evolution cocatalyst were coupled on the TiO2 surface via a simple triethanolamine (TEOA)-assisted photodeposition strategy. Owing to the initially uniform anchoring of the Cu(TEOA)(2+) precursor on the TiO2 surface, the final CuxP nanodots show a very small size of 2-5 nm and are homogeneously distributed on the surface of the photocatalyst. The obtained CuxP-ND/TiO2 photocatalysts displayed a significantly enhanced ultraviolet-light H-2-production activity and the CuxP-ND/TiO2(1 wt%) sample displayed a maximum hydrogen-production rate of 93.5 mu mol h(-1) with an apparent quantum efficiency of 7.7%, which is a 30-fold increase compared to bare TiO2. The boosted hydrogen generation can be ascribed to the fact that the ultra-small non-crystalline CuxP nanodots can not only induce the formation of a built-in electric field to improve the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons, but also provide interfacial hydrogen-production sites to dramatically enhance the H-2-generation rate. These new non-crystalline CuxP nanodots with a green and facile preparation procedure can pave a new way to exploit efficient co-catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of Pd/Ni modification on the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of SrTiO3 (STO). STO catalysts were synthesized using a hydrothermal method, and Pd/Ni modification was applied on the surface of STO through chemical deposition. Experimental results demonstrate that the hydrogen evolution rate of Pd/Ni-modified STO (Pd/Ni-STO) reaches 2232.14 μmol·g-1·h-1. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) analysis reveals substitutional doping of Ni with Ti and coordination of Pd with surface O. XPS analysis indicates the introduction of oxygen vacancies due to Pd/Ni doping. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that Ni doping activates neighboring Ti atoms, leading to the formation of bimetallic catalytic sites composed of oxygen vacancies and Ti atoms, greatly enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. This study not only provides an effective catalyst for photocatalytic applications but also offers insights into the underlying mechanism, which may stimulate the development of metal-doped catalytic materials and have implications for a range of other applications.

Abstract:In this work, a ternary Ti3C2/TiO2/SrTiO3 composite with heterogeneous network structure was prepared by two-step in situ hydrothermal synthesis method, which mainly involved the growth of TiO2 nanosheets and fibrous SrTiO3 sequentially on the Ti3C2 substrate using the Ti source inherent in Ti3C2 as the reaction site. The Ti3C2/TiO2/SrTiO3 heterojunction exhibited enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. When the doping amount of SrTiO3 was 5 wt%, the hydrogen evolution rate of 5MTS under full solar irradiation reached 14322.6 μmol·g−1·h−1, which was 10.6 times the rate of the Ti3C2/TiO2 composite without modified SrTiO3. Meanwhile, the 5MTS composites showed good stability in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution cycle test. The enhanced activity and recyclability are mainly attributed to the strong light absorption ability, fast separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and abundant catalytic active sites. In addition, the synthesis method utilizing an intrinsic Ti source also enhances the interfacial contact between Ti3C2, TiO2, and SrTiO3. This study provides an effective reference for the construction of perovskite-based or Ti3C2 co-catalyzed heterostructures and their application for the conversion of solar power to hydrogen energy.

Abstract:Nano-CuO have been grown on the surface of CdS nanorods by a simple solution-phase reaction, which greatly enhanced the hydrogen evolution ability of CdS. The physical chemistry properties of CuO/CdS nanocomposites were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS and electrochemical methods. The morphology and crystal structure of CdS were not influenced by the loading of Nano-CuO. And it was helpful to delay the time of electron recombination to the hole, and greatly improved the hydrogen evolution performance of CdS. When the loading of Nano-CuO was 1 wt%, the photocatalytic performance of CdS increases from 105 μmol g−1 h−1 to 3317.5 μmol g−1 h−1. After several cycles, the structure of CuO/CdS nanocomposites was not changed, and Nano-CuO could effectively prevent the photo-corrosion defects of CdS. This work provides a new way to improve the hydrogen evolution performance of CdS by growing nano-oxide on CdS surface.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts anchoring offers a desirable pathway for efficiency maximization and cost-saving for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, the single-atoms loading amount is always within 0.5% in most of the reported due to the agglomeration at higher loading concentrations. In this work, the highly dispersed and large loading amount (>1 wt%) of copper single-atoms were achieved on TiO 2 , exhibiting the H 2 evolution rate of 101.7 mmol g −1 h −1 under simulated solar light irradiation, which is higher than other photocatalysts reported, in addition to the excellent stability as proved after storing 380 days. More importantly, it exhibits an apparent quantum efficiency of 56% at 365 nm, a significant breakthrough in this field. The highly dispersed and large amount of Cu single-atoms incorporation on TiO 2 enables the efficient electron transfer via Cu 2+ -Cu + process. The present approach paves the way to design advanced materials for remarkable photocatalytic activity and durability.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis serves a green technique to convert solar energy to sustainable hydrogen energy through water splitting. TiO2 has attracting increasing interest and much effort has been paid on addressing the suffered drawbacks of solar energy utilization limitation and electron-hole recombination. In this work, simultaneously involving of oxygen vacancy and Cu into TiO2 nanoparticles has been achieved through self-reduction of Cu2O and self-transformation of Ti-precursor from Cu2O@Ti-precursor in ethylene glycol-water medium. The Cu@TiO2-x hybrids show improved photocatalytic H2 production, and the Cu@TiO2-x-1% sample has H2 evolution rate of 7218.8 μmol g−1h−1, which is 2.1 times higher than that of TiO2-x. It is proposed that the involving of metallic copper and oxygen vacancy by this solvothermal approach can enhance light absorption, promote electron-hole pairs separation and charge transfer, and increase active sites of TiO2 nanoparticles, resulting in synergetic effect for hydrogen production improvement.

Simultaneous Realization of Sulfur-Rich Surface and Amorphous Nanocluster of NiS1+x Cocatalyst for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:Transition-metal sulfides have been proved to be a favorable candidate for high-efficiency cocatalyst for photocatalysts, but the major bottlenecks remains lacking sufficient active sites for interfacial H-2-generation reactions. In this article, the sulfur-rich NiS1+x nanoclusters with abundant active unsaturated S sites are homogeneously anchored on TiO2 particles by a facile S2O32--mediated photodeposition route. The as-synthesized NiS1+x/TiO2(1 wt%) photocatalyst achieves the boosted H-2 evolution rate of 264.42 mu mol h(-1) as well as shows an outstanding stability and repeatability. The sulfur-rich NiS1+x nanoclusters can not only act as an outstanding cocatalyst to effectively accelerate the electron migration from TiO2 to NiS1+x nanoclusters, but also provide numerous active unsaturated S sites to promote interfacial H-2-generation reaction, thereby promoting the photocatalytic H-2 -production rate of the NiS1+x/TiO2 photocatalysts. Particularly, the present method can be extended to construct other metal sulfides (AgSx, CoSx or CuSx) to evidently promote the photocatalytic H-2-evolution activity.
