Abstract:Metal halide perovskites, as promising photovoltaic materials, have shown great potential in coherent light sources due to their unprecedented properties, such as solution processability, low cost, large and balanced carrier mobility, high optical gain, and tunable bandgap. With the rapid development in the material synthesis and nanofabrication technique, perovskite lasers have been realized in a variety of compositions, morphologies, dimensions, sizes, excitation schemes, and cavity configurations, giving rise to distinct emission characteristics. In this perspective, the latest progress in the mode control over perovskite lasers, including emission wavelength, mode number, direction, polarization, and orbital angular momentum, is systematically reviewed. Criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the strategies to steer the emission are proposed and discussed. Lastly, the challenges and trends for the mode control of perovskite lasers are presented.

Abstract:Solution-processable semiconductor lasers have been a long-standing challenge for next-generation displays, light sources, and communication technologies. Metal halide perovskites, which combine the advantages of inorganic and organic semiconductors, have recently emerged not only as excellent candidates for solution-processable lasers but also as potential complementary gain materials for filling the "green gap" and supplement industrial nanolasers based on classic II-VI/III-V semiconductors. Numerous perovskite lasers have been developed successfully with superior performance in terms of cost-effectiveness, low threshold, high coherence, and multicolor tunability. This mini review surveys the development, current status, and perspectives of perovskite lasers, categorized into thin film lasers, nanocrystals lasers, microlasers, and device concepts including polariton and bound-in-continuum lasers with a focus on material fundamentals, cavity design, and low-threshold devices in addition to critical issues such as mass fabrication and applications.

Abstract:Abstract Here we provide a comprehensive review of a newly developed lighting technology based on metal halide perovskites (i.e. perovskite light-emitting diodes) encompassing the research endeavours into materials, photophysics and device engineering. At the outset we survey the basic perovskite structures and their various dimensions (namely three-, two- and zero-dimensional perovskites), and demonstrate how the compositional engineering of these structures affects the perovskite light-emitting properties. Next, we turn to the physics underpinning photo- and electroluminescence in these materials through their connection to the fundamental excited states, energy/charge transport processes and radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms. In the remainder of the review, we focus on the engineering of perovskite light-emitting diodes, including the history of their development as well as an extensive analysis of contemporary strategies for boosting device performance. Key concepts include balancing the electron/hole injection, suppression of parasitic carrier losses, improvement of the photoluminescence quantum yield and enhancement of the light extraction. Overall, this review reflects the current paradigm for perovskite lighting, and is intended to serve as a foundation to materials and device scientists newly working in this field.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have been regarded as remarkable materials for next-generation light-harvesting and light emission devices. Due to their unique optical properties, such as high absorption coefficient, high optical gain, low trappingstate density, and ease of band gap engineering, perovskites promise to be used in lasing devices. In this article, the recent progresses of microlasers based on reduced-dimensional structures including nanoplatelets, nanowires, and quantum dots are reviewed from both fundamental photophysics and device applications. Furthermore, perovskite-based plasmonic nanolasers and polariton lasers are summarized. Perspectives on perovskite-based small lasers are also discussed. This review can serve as an overview and evaluation of state-of-the-art micro/nanolaser science.

Abstract:Metal-halide perovskites have garnered considerable research attention as highly efficient light emitters in recent years due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties with remarkable tunability and excellent solution processabilities. Substantial advancements have been achieved in the development of novel halide perovskites, and the exploitations of these materials in light-emitting devices. This review comprehensively outlines recent breakthroughs in metal-halide perovskites, encompassing the rational design of perovskite materials with tunable light emission properties, the controllable growth of single crystal for a deeper understanding of their structure–property relationships, as well as the fundamental insights into the photophysics and carrier dynamics in perovskite systems. Additionally, it provides an overview of recent applications of perovskite materials in high-performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and lasers.

Abstract:As a new functional material, metal halide perovskites provide new possibilities for preparing gain media for nanosemiconductor lasers. This paper reviews the fabrication results of nanosemiconductor lasers based on metal halide perovskite materials. Firstly, three standard metal halide perovskite-based nanosemiconductor lasers are described: thin-film, nanowire, and quantum dot lasers. Under the corresponding gain structure of each laser, the appropriate gain dielectric material is discussed, and its application in the fabrication of nanosemiconductor lasers is discussed. On this basis, the effects of these gain structures and metal halide perovskite materials on the performance of nanosemiconductor lasers and related application progress are analyzed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of nanosemiconductor lasers based on metal halide perovskite materials are summarized and the future development trend was discussed.

Abstract:<p>Metal halide perovskites have drawn tremendous attention in optoelectronic applications owing to the rapid development in photovoltaic and light‐emitting diode devices. More recently, these materials are demonstrated as excellent gain media for laser applications due to their large absorption coefficient, low defect density, high charge carrier mobility, long carrier diffusion length, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and low Auger recombination rate. Despite the great progress in laser applications, the development of perovskite lasers is still in its infancy and the realization of electrically pumped lasers has not yet been demonstrated. To accelerate the development of perovskite‐based lasers, it is important to understand the fundamental photophysical characteristics of perovskite gain materials. Here, the structure and gain behavior in various perovskite materials are discussed. Then, the effects of charge carrier dynamics and electron–phonon interaction on population inversion in different types of perovskite materials are analyzed. Further, recent advances in perovskite‐based lasers are also highlighted. Finally, a perspective on perovskite material design is presented and the remaining challenges of perovskite lasers are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Nanostructures of inorganic semiconductors have revolutionized many areas of electronics, optoelectronics and photonics. The controlled synthesis of semiconductor nanostructures could lead to novel physical properties, improved optoelectronic device performance and new areas for exploration. Lead halide perovskites have recently excited the photovoltaic research community owing to their high solar-conversion efficiencies and ease of solution processing; they also hold great promise for optoelectronic applications, such as light-emitting diodes and lasers. In this Review, we summarize recent developments in the synthesis and characterization of metal halide perovskite nanostructures with controllable compositions, dimensionality, morphologies and orientations. We examine the advantageous optical properties, improved stability and potential optoelectronic applications of these 1D and 2D single-crystal perovskite nanostructures and compare them with those of bulk perovskites and nanostructures of conventional semiconductors. Studies in which perovskite nanostructures have been used to study the fundamental physical properties of perovskites are also highlighted. Finally, we discuss the challenges in realizing halide perovskite nanostructures for optoelectronic and photonic applications and offer our perspectives on future opportunities and research directions.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites, which have aroused the enormous interest from scientists recently, are widely used in a variety of areas such as solar cells, light emitting diodes (LED) and lasers. Nanomaterials exhibit distinguished optical and electrical properties because of their quantum confinement as well as strong anisotropy. The metal halide perovskite nanomaterials have the advantages of adjustable band gap, high quantum efficiency, strong photoluminescence, quantum confinement and long carrier-lifetime. Besides, as a result of the low-cost fabrication and the sufficient raw material reserve, they have a broad prospect in photoelectric applications. But on the other hand, the poor stability of metal halide perovskites, due to the defect trap states and grain boundaries on the surface, cast a shadow towards their practical applications. The moisture, oxygen and ultraviolet of the environment will degrade their photoelectric performances significantly. In this review, we introduce the synthesis and growth mechanism of metal perovskite nanomaterial quantum dots, nanowires and nanoplatelets, and present their novel photoelectric properties and applications in various photoelectric devices. Finally we summarize the emerging challenges and discuss the next-generation photoelectric applications.

Abstract:Reliable and efficient continuous-wave (CW) lasers have been intensively pursued in the field of optoelectronic integrated circuits. Metal perovskites have emerged as promising gain materials for solution-processed laser diodes. Recently, the performance of CW perovskite lasers has been improved with the optimization of material and device levels. Nevertheless, the realization of CW pumped perovskite lasers is still hampered by thermal runaway, unwanted parasitic species, and poor long-term stability. This review starts with the charge carrier recombination dynamics and fundamentals of CW lasing in perovskites. We examine the potential strategies that can be used to improve the performance of perovskite CW lasers from the materials to device levels. We also propose the open challenges and future opportunities in developing high-performance and stable CW pumped perovskite lasers.

Abstract:The past two years have witnessed heightened interest in metal-halide perovskites as promising optoelectronic materials for solid-state light emitting applications beyond photovoltaics. Metal-halide perovskites are low-cost solution-processable materials with excellent intrinsic properties such as broad tunability of bandgap, defect tolerance, high photoluminescence quantum efficiency and high emission color purity (narrow full-width at half maximum). In this review, the photophysical properties of hybrid perovskites, which relates with light-emission, such as broad tunability, nature of the recombination processes and quantum efficiency are examined. The prospects of hybrid perovskite light-emitting diodes and lasers, and their key challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Recent progress on emerging laser technologies for processing and nanopatterning of halide perovskites, as well as their applications in designing advanced light‐emitting systems and controlling light at the nanoscale, is overviewed. Special emphasis is placed on new approaches for the perovskites surface and volume modification with ultra‐high precision and a high degree of material's properties control. Halide perovskites have become a versatile platform not only for optoelectronic devices but also for modern optics and nanophotonics. Perovskite nano‐ and micro‐particles, metasurfaces, and photonic crystals demonstrate their applicability for directional enhanced photo‐ and electro‐luminescence, lasing, as well as for improving the performance of optoelectronic devices. However, ionic nature makes perovskites water soluble, while their high sensitivity to diverse chemicals complicates their patterning toward the formation of functional, high‐quality nanostructures. Here, recent progress on emerging laser technologies for processing and nanopatterning of halide perovskites, as well as their applications in designing advanced light‐emitting systems and controlling light at the nanoscale is overviewed. Special emphasis is made on the processes underlying the interaction of laser radiation with perovskites to disclose new avenues for their surface and volume modification with ultra‐high precision and a high degree of material's property control.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite nanostructures have emerged as low-dimensional semiconductors of great significance in many fields such as photovoltaics, photonics, and optoelectronics. Extensive efforts on the controlled synthesis of perovskite nanostructures have been made towards potential device applications. The engineering of their band structures holds great promise in the rational tuning of the electronic and optical properties of perovskite nanostructures, which is one of the keys to achieving efficient and multifunctional optoelectronic devices. In this article, we summarize recent advances in band structure engineering of perovskite nanostructures. A survey of bandgap engineering of nanostructured perovskites is firstly presented from the aspects of dimensionality tailoring, compositional substitution, phase segregation and transition, as well as strain and pressure stimuli. The strategies of electronic doping are then reviewed, including defect-induced self-doping, inorganic or organic molecules-based chemical doping, and modification by metal ions or nanostructures. Based on the bandgap engineering and electronic doping, discussions on engineering energy band alignments in perovskite nanostructures are provided for building high-performance perovskite p-n junctions and heterostructures. At last, we provide our perspectives in engineering band structures of perovskite nanostructures towards future low-energy optoelectronics technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Owing to the excellent properties of perovskite quantum dots (QDs), such as an easy synthesis process, high photoluminescence quantum yields, high defect tolerance, and tunable bandgap with different elements, laser actions have been widely conducted. Over the past few years, several approaches have been used for successfully creating perovskite QD lasers. In this review, we summarize the progress of perovskite QD lasers from the aspects of laser theory, characteristics and applications of QD lasers, advantages of perovskite materials for lasers, factors influencing the QD laser threshold, two‐photon pumped QD lasers, and perovskite QD laser stability. Abstract:Metal halide perovskites represent a flourishing area of research, which is driven by both their potential application in photovoltaics and optoelectronics and by the fundamental science behind their unique optoelectronic properties. The emergence of new colloidal methods for the synthesis of halide perovskite nanocrystals, as well as the interesting characteristics of this new type of material, has attracted the attention of many researchers. This review aims to provide an up-to-date survey of this fast-moving field and will mainly focus on the different colloidal synthesis approaches that have been developed. We will examine the chemistry and the capability of different colloidal synthetic routes with regard to controlling the shape, size, and optical properties of the resulting nanocrystals. We will also provide an up-to-date overview of their postsynthesis transformations, and summarize the various solution processes that are aimed at fabricating halide perovskite-based nanocomposites. Furthermore, we will review the fundamental optical properties of halide perovskite nanocrystals by focusing on their linear optical properties, on the effects of quantum confinement, and on the current knowledge of their exciton binding energies. We will also discuss the emergence of nonlinear phenomena such as multiphoton absorption, biexcitons, and carrier multiplication. Finally, we will discuss open questions and possible future directions.

Abstract:This review summarizes the recent advances of alloy engineering of metal halide perovskites, focusing on A‐cation and B‐metal alloy strategies. The alloy effects on the crystalline structure, optoelectronic properties, ferroelectricity, carrier dynamics, and stability of perovskites are systematically interpreted. This review provide an insightful physical understanding and technical guideline for designing high‐quality and stable halide perovskites. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have demonstrated great advances for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. However, owing to the presence of the synergy from lattice strain, defects of MHPs, and environment, MHPs suffer from phase transitions and degradation, resulting in the restriction of their practical applications and further commercialization. Multiple metal elements can coexist in MHPs to form alloys due to the high tolerance of lattice and the composition replaceability, which provides a novel strategy for improvement of performance and stability. In this review, the recent advances of alloy engineering of MHPs, focusing on the cation and the metal ion (A‐ and B‐site) alloy strategies, are reviewed. The alloy effects on the crystalline structure, optoelectronic properties, ferroelectricity, carrier dynamics, and stability of perovskites are interpreted. Finally, the prospect of this study is the challenges in the MHPs alloy engineering.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites emerge as promising semiconductors for optoelectronic devices due to ease of fabrication, attractive photophysical properties, their low cost, highly tunable material properties, and high performance. High-quality thin films of metal halide perovskites are the basis of most of these applications including solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and electronic memristors. A typical fabrication method for perovskite thin films is the solution method, which has several limitations in device reproducibility, adverse environmental impact, and utilization of raw materials. Thermal evaporation holds great promise in addressing these bottlenecks in fabricating high-quality halide perovskite thin films. It also has high compatibility with mass-production platforms that are well-established in industries. This review first introduces the basics of the thermal evaporation method with a particular focus on the critical parameters influencing the thin film deposition. The research progress of the fabrication of metal halide perovskite thin films is further summarized by different thermal evaporation approaches and their applications in solar cells and other optoelectronic devices. Finally, research challenges and future opportunities for both fundamental research and commercialization are discussed.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have shown rapid development in various fields such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and optically pumped lasers owing to their superior optoelectronic properties. Here, we review the basic optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites from a photophysical perspective. We highlight that halide perovskites are promising in various optoelectronic devices functioning at a wide range of carrier densities. We discuss optically and electrically generated carrier density under two different excitation modes [continuous wave (CW) and pulsed] as well as the impact of carrier density on the optoelectronic behavior of perovskites. Moreover, we discuss lasing actions at high carrier densities and summarize key rules to evaluate the lasing actions. Last, we provide an outlook on perovskite-based electrically pumped lasers.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals have attracted great attention of researchers due to their unique optoelectronic properties such as high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), narrow full width at half-maximum (FWHM), long exciton diffusion length and high carrier mobility, which have been widely used in diverse fields including solar cells, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. Very recently, metal halide perovskites have emerged as a new class of materials in photocatalysis due to their promising photocatalytic performance. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on synthesis, modification and functionalization, with a specific focus on the photocatalytic application of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals. Finally, a brief outlook is proposed to point out the challenges in this emerging area. The goal of this view is to introduce the photocatalytic application of the metal halide perovskites and motivate researchers from different fields to explore more potentials in catalysis.
