Abstract:Branching processes in a random environment are natural generalisations of Galton-Watson processes. In this paper we analyse the asymptotic decay of the survival probability for a sequence of slightly supercritical branching processes in an iid random environment, where the offspring expectation converges from above to $1$. We prove that Haldane's asymptotics, known from classical Galton-Watson processes, turns up again in the random environment case, provided that one stays away from the critical/subcritical regime. A central building block is a connection to and a limit theorem for perpetuities with asymptotically vanishing interest rates.

Abstract:For branching processes, the generating functions for limit distributions of so-called ratios of probabilities of rare events satisfy the Schröder-type integral-functional equations. Excepting limited special cases, the corresponding equations can not be solved analytically. I found a large class of Poisson-type offspring distributions, for which the Schröder-type functional equations can be solved analytically. Moreover, for the asymptotics of limit distributions, the power and constant factor can be written explicitly. As a bonus, Bernoulli branching processes in random environments are treated. The beauty of this example is that the explicit formula for the generating function is unknown. Still, the closed-form expression for the power and constant factor in the asymptotic can be written with the help of some outstanding tricks. Also, the asymptotic expansion contains oscillatory terms absent in the Poisson case. It is shown that at the power $3$ in the Bernoulli binomial kernels short-phase discrete oscillations turn into long-phase continuous ones.

Abstract:Consider a supercritical branching Wiener process in Rd. Let Zn(A) be the number of the nth generation particles located in a given set A⊂Rd. Under the moment condition of EX(lnX)1+λ type, the complete asymptotic expansions of Zn(A) as n tends to infinity are obtained. This result gives an alternative version of the work by Révész, Rosen and Shi (2005), hence generalizing theirs by weakening the second moment condition therein.

Abstract:We study supercritical branching processes under the influence of an i.i.d. emigration component. We provide conditions, under which the lifetime of the process is finite respectively has a finite expectation. A new version of the Kesten-Stigum theorem is obtained and the extinction probability for a large initial population size is related to the tail behaviour of the emigration.

Abstract:We investigate subcritical Galton-Watson branching processes with immigration in a random environment. Using Goldie's implicit renewal theory we show that under general Cramér condition the stationary distribution has a power law tail. We determine the tail process of the stationary Markov chain, prove point process convergence, and convergence of the partial sums. The original motivation comes from Kesten, Kozlov and Spitzer seminal 1975 paper, which connects a random walk in a random environment model to a special Galton-Watson process with immigration in a random environment. We obtain new results even in this very special setting.

Abstract:We prove some limit theorems for continuous time and state branching processes. The non-degenerate limit laws are obtained in critical and non-critical cases by conditioning or introducing immigration processes. The limit laws in non-critical cases are characterized in terms of the canonical measure of the cumulant semigroup. The proofs are based on estimates of the cumulant semigroup derived from the forward and backward equations, which are easier than the proofs in the classical setting.

Abstract:We introduce a random probability measure on the profinite completion of the random tree of a branching process and introduce the canonical and grand canonical ensembles of random repelling particles on this random profinite completion at inverse temperature $\beta > 0$. We think of this as a random spatial process of particles in a random tree, and we introduce the notion of the {\em mean} canonical and grand canonical partition functions where in this context `mean' means averaged over the random environment. We give a recursion for these mean partition functions and demonstrate that in certain instances, determined by the law for the branching process, these partition functions as a function of $\beta$ have algebraic properties which generalize those that appear in the non-random and $p$-adic environments.

Abstract:In this work, we study asymptotics of the genealogy of Galton-Watson processes. Thus we consider a offspring distribution such that the rescaled Galton-Watson processes converges to a continuous state branching process (CSBP) with jumps. After we show that the rescaled height (or exploration) process of the corresponding Galton-Watson family tree, converges in a functional sense, to the continuous height process that Le Gall and Le Jan introduced in 1998 on their paper "branching processes in L\'evy processes : The exploration process".

Abstract:Branching processes pervade many models in statistical physics. We investigate the survival probability of a Galton-Watson branching process after a finite number of generations. We reveal the finite-size scaling law of the survival probability for a given branching process ruled by a probability distribution of the number of offspring per element whose standard deviation is finite, obtaining the exact scaling function as well as the critical exponents. Our findings prove the universal behavior of branching processes concerning the survival probability.

Abstract:We consider two independent random variables with the given tail asymptotic (e.g. power or exponential). We find tail asymptotic for their sum and product. This is done by some cumbersome but purely technical computations and requires the use of the Laplace method for asymptotic of integrals. We also recall the results for asymptotic of a self-similar locally stationary centered Gaussian process plus a deterministic drift; and we find the asymptotic for the same probability after multiplying the drift by a random variable, which is independent of this process. While classical subcritical Galton-Watson processes have been extensively analyzed, bisexual Galton-Watson branching processes present unique difficulties because of the lack of the branching property. Abstract:We study a branching random walk with independent and identically distributed, heavy tailed displacements. The offspring law is supercritical and satisfies the Kesten-Stigum condition. We treat the case when the law of the displacements does not lie in the max-domain of attraction of an extreme value distribution. Hence, the classical extreme value theory, which is often deployed in this kind of models, breaks down. We show that if the tails of the displacements are such that the absolute value of the logarithm of the tail is a slowly varying function, one can still effectively analyse the extremes of the process. More precisely, after a non-linear transformation the extremes of the branching random walk process converge to a cluster Cox process.

Abstract:We consider a class of density-dependent branching processes which generalises exponential, logistic and Gompertz growth. A population begins with a single individual, grows exponentially initially, and then growth may slow down as the population size moves towards a carrying capacity. At a time while the population is still growing superlinearly, a fixed number of individuals are sampled and their coalescent tree is drawn. Taking the sampling time and carrying capacity simultaneously to infinity, we prove convergence of the coalescent tree to a limiting tree which is in a sense universal over our class of models.

Abstract:We study distributions $F$ on $[0,\infty)$ such that for some $T\le\infty$, $F^{*2}(x,x+T]\sim 2 F(x,x+T]$. The case $T=\infty$ corresponds to $F$ being subexponential, and our analysis shows that the properties for $T<\infty$ are, in fact, very similar to this classical case. A parallel theory is developed in the presence of densities. Applications are given to random walks, the key renewal theorem, compound Poisson process and Bellman-Harris branching processes.
