Abstract:Although polyphase deformation is reported in the Late Triassic volcano-sedimentary rocks in the Yidun Terrane at the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, deformation events, formation ages and tectonic implications are still hotly debated. Based on the 1: 50, 000-scale regional geological survey, structural analysis, paleostress inversion and zircon U-Pb geochronology were carried out on the Late Triassic volcano-sedimentary rocks in the Yidun Terrane. U-Pb ages of youngest detrital zircons from meta-sandstone of the Lamaya Formation (220 Ma for sample D2000 and 225 Ma for sample D2023), welded tuff (219.4 ± 1.2 Ma) and quartz monzogranite (216.7 ± 0.5 Ma) indicate that the Late Triassic volcano-sedimentary rocks were deposited during 219-216 Ma. These volcano-sedimentary rocks were deposited in a foreland basin caused by the closure of the Jinshajiang Ocean. Structural analysis shows that three generations of folds with different orientations and five stages of Cenozoic faulting occurred in the Late Triassic volcano-sedimentary rocks. These three generations of folds consist of Late Triassic N-S-trending tight folds, Early-Middle Paleogene E-W-striking open folds and Late Neogene NW-SE-trending drag folds. The stress inversion of the fault-slip data reveals that Late Paleogene strike-slip regime, Early Miocene NE-SW extensional regime, Late Miocene strike-slip regime, Pliocene N-S extensional regime and Quaternary E-W extensional regime subjected to the Yidun Terrane. Combining these with previously published data, we ascribe the N-S-trending tight folds to the Late Triassic final closure of Paleo-Tethys Ocean, whereas the E-W-striking open folds to the closure of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and subsequent India-Asia collision. The NW-SE-trending drag folds and the five stages of faulting regimes were possibly related to the intracontinental stresses originating of India-Asia collision.
