Abstract:Existing criticism of classical short fiction is often confined to the surface text. This may be attributable, among other things, to the following reasons: (1) failing to read the text "closely", (2) overlooking the interaction among different elements of the text, (3) overlooking the relation between the text and its context, (4) overlooking the relation between the text under discussion and other relevant texts. In order to redress these deficiencies, this essay advocates the method of "overall close reading," focusing on three exemplary cases: Mansfield’s "Revelations", Chopin’s "Desirée’s Baby" and Crane’s "An Episode of War". The present study aims to show that through "overall close reading", there may be revealed a hidden subtext which typically forms a sharp contrast with the surface text.

She believed that man and woman were different and living in a different world, and it’s very hard to understand and communicate with the other sex. Man dominated the society in the economical and political areas in tradition that they had the speech right and ranked above woman. However, Mansfield saw the hope of the awakening of the feminism awareness.

The Feminist Thoughts of Vera in A Dill Pickle

Abstract:Katherine Mansfield, the most famous writer in New Zealand, was closely associated with D. H. Lawrence and something of a rival of Virginia Woolf. Like the Russian writer Anton Chekhov, Mansfield depicted trivial events and subtle changes in human behavior. A Dill Pickle, one of her short stories, describes the reunion between the former lovers in a caf6 after six-year separation. Mansfield introduced suspense into the story while knitting the plot and adopted stream of consciousness as the narrative device to reveal the inner feelings and thoughts of the heroine--Vera. The present paper, first of all, gives a brief introduction of the story. Then, it explores Vera＇s feminist thoughts from three aspects：（a） causes to bring about her thought of feminism; （b） manifestation of her feminist thoughts in what she behaved; and （c） the influence of her thought to other women of her time and inspiration to other female writers. The paper concludes that Vera well presented the image of a woman full of feminist thoughts which were really ahead of her time.

Abstract:Dafen oil painting vilage is regarded as a successful case of Urban Vilage improvement. However, the needs of different groups of people in Dafen are paid little attention to when summing up the experience, while its 26-year-long continuous improvement process made it difficult to extract the experience of universal value from its complex historical accumulation. The thesis applied two main concepts of archetypal critical theory in the field of literary criticism to rethinking the improvement process of Dafen and tries to extract experience with universal value by investigating the relationship between the motion directions of the archetype and its deep structure.

Abstract:The present author's essay "Narrative Text and Ideology"takes issue with previous interpretations of Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour".That essay has been challenged by a recent essay entitled "Gender Politics or Marriage Bondage".This challenge has led the present author to consider further the relation between Chopin's story and some important aspects of literary interpretation,including(1) how interpretive frameworks predetermine reading;(2)the relation between the themes of a text and those of related texts;and(3)the relation between a literary work and its author as well as cultural context.

Abstract:This essay proposes and practices the method of "overall close-reading", which tries to get rid of the fetters of interpretive frames, carefully examines local elements in terms of their global function and the interaction among different elements of the narrative text, and combines intrinsic criticism with extrinsic criticism. Through an overall close-reading of Stephen Crane' s "An Episode of War," there is revealed a macrostruetural satirical strategy: "feminization" directed against traditional notions of heroism. Further, it is revealed that this strategy subtly interacts with other satirical strategies, such as implicitly substituting the fighting against the enemy with various internal conflicts and contrasts, subtly subverting the protagonist's "dignity" as an army officer, and unobtrusively deconstructing the meaning of war in general. From this new angle, "An Episode of War" is seen, instead of a realistic narrative, as a unique and extremely subtle satire against war and traditional notions of heroism.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Despite extensive theoretical and critical attention paid to focalization, no effort has been made to discuss how one mode of focalization simultaneously helps convey two contrastive kinds of irony. This is ascribable to three factors. First, such a phenomenon is not often seen. Second, if it occurs, it would take place at once in relation to the overt progression and to a covert progression, but critical attention has not extended to the latter. Third, investigations of both focalization and irony have not yet considered their taking on contrastive functions along different thematic trajectories. This essay explores this previously neglected phenomenon with the illustration of Katherine Mansfield’s “A Dill Pickle,” a narrative focusing on the relationship between a man and a woman. The essay reveals that the woman’s focalization conveys irony not only at the male protagonist in the plot-based overt progression but also at the woman herself in a paralleling covert progression.

Abstract:This article bridges the cultural and aesthetic critiques of sentimental fiction by turning to a rhetorical model of reading, a model that allows us to recognize both the cultural significance and aesthetic complexity of sentimental fiction. More specially, I use Rebecca Harding Davis's "Life in the Iron Mills" as a case study to illustrate how Davis devised her narrative strategies to move her reader to change the social reality they both faced. In other words, her strategies arise in response to specific historical and cultural circumstances even as they lead to an aesthetically accomplished novella. At the same time, the paper also seeks to make the theoretical intervention that sentimental fiction, " Life in the Iron Mills" in particular, prompts further refinements of the rhetorical model. That is, we can further discriminate the audience positions Peter Rabinowitz proposes in order to better account for the varied and complex reading situations in sentimental fiction.

Abstract:Starting with the old notion of poetics,this paper gives a deep exploration of the causes why Zhang Ailing annotated in Mandarin (intralingual translation) the novel Biographies of Shanghai Flowers written in Wu dialect. There are mainly two reasons: the unpopularity of the original text and the personal preference of the translator. It also reflects the close relationship among the poetics of the original text,the mainstream poetics and the poetics of the translator. The detailed investigation of the few aspects helps clarify the motives behind Zhang Ailing’s translating project.

Abstract:The loneliness and isolation experienced by older women have frequently been the focus of Brookner's writing. Fraud, one of her typical novels, provided a provocative perspective on age and gender. In light of a number of previous studies, this article aims to contribute to the study of feminist fiction that focuses on older women and to encourage more academic inquiry and study in this area. Based on the method of literature research and detailed reading of Fraud, the essay demonstrated the dual gaze that Anna, the protagonist of Fraud, experienced from both sexes, particularly from her mother and Lawrence Halliday, in accordance with the gaze theory. The gaze showed exterior control in Anna as well as how she internalized those gaze and molded herself into the object of others’ sight. Though she was observed by others and lived by their expectations for half of her life, Anna "counter-gazed" the overall look in her own unique way. She was liberated from the ongoing fraud thanks to her anorexia, dreams, straight look, and clothing design. Finally, the once-submissive Anna developed into an independent woman, speaking up forcefully for women to follow their own aspirations. By examining the gaze and anti-gaze that Anna experienced, the essay empowers all older women to recognize that new routes are open to them and inspires all women to confront the oppressive gaze and live their lives to the fullest.
Three Canons of Chinese Painting and Virginia Woolfs Painting Words in To the Lighthouse

Abstract:Virginia Woolf has been writing with painting words. Based on the previous studies on Woolfs relationship with Chinese art and aesthetics, great similarities between Virginia Woolfs writing techniques and Chinese painting techniques are able to be identified. Her masterpiece To the Lighthouse has shown a strong resonance with the first three of the Six Canons of Chinese Painting --Qi Yun Sheng Dong, Gu Fa Yong Bi and Ying Wu Xiang Xing. This parallel research aims to further establish the resonances between these three canons and Woolfs way of writing in To the Lighthouse. Qi Yun Sheng Dong (rhythmic vitality) has found an echo in Woolfs rhythmic sentence pattern, rhythmic words and rhythmic images. The second canon, Gu Fa Yong Bi (bone-manner brushwork) finds similarities in the novels long-short-long chapter organization and how each chapter is unfolded. Ying Wu Xiang Xing (conformity with nature in portraying forms) shows great resonances with Lily Briscoes creative process and her final art creation. Surprisingly, Chinese painting aesthetics has found its resonance in Virginia Woolfs writing and a new critical perspective has come into being.

Abstract:Regarding "The Daisy follows soft the Sun -" (Fr161), the interpretive energy has been invested upon formulating the love relationship between the daisy and the sun, describing her humbleness, faithfulness, and masochistic attachment, her transformation from subservience to assertiveness or her assertion in disguise of humility. From a combined perspective of Daoism and Ralph Waldo Emerson, this essay argues that this poem features the course of nature, the transcendent moment that gravitates within, and an impersonal love. The poem dramatizes a process of returning to quietude characterized by stillness, darkness, and serenity. The Emersonian vein is clearly evidenced in the daisy's posture of "[Sitting] shyly" at night, returning to solitude, and finding a rest within an edifying sentiment. The daisy-sunset love echoes Emerson's spiritual love which presupposes a non-possessive attitude. This strand of theme intersects with softening the light, an idea which is essential for a flourishing state of being and interaction.

Abstract:Fond Memories of Peiping is a prose created by She Lao. Through the description of Peiping City in his memory, the author expresses his deep longing for this city. The prose is simple and unpretentious, coupled with the delicate emotion expressed in prose, which is representative and implies research significance. In order to solve the problem of differences between Chinese and English in the translation of this prose, Peiji Zhang has polished and modified the translation to convey “beauty” to the target readers while ensuring the original characteristics as much as possible. Under the theory of translation aesthetics, the author will analyze Peiji Zhang’s translation from two aspects: lexical and syntactic aesthetics.

Abstract:The Story of an Hour as one of Kate Chopin’s classic masterpieces, has always been regarded as a purely feminist work that authentically indicates the awakening of women’s consciousness of freedom under the oppression of patriarchal politics. Since Halliday proposed Systemic Functional Grammar and the three metafunctions of language, transitivity has been widely employed in the interpretation of literary works. The present study focuses on the vicissitude of the protagonist Mrs. Mallard’s mental status through the transitivity analysis as a useful tool and the stylistic features of the text itself as well to explore the hidden theme which has been neglected, and concludes that this classic work is kidnapped by feminist criticism. It satirizes the protagonist’s pathological emotional state of pursuing the absolute freedom in marriage.

Abstract:Bing Xin, Ding Ling and Zhang Ailing are indispensable in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese literature, and they have also opened up a new world in the history of Chinese women's literature. Bing Xin's first short story "Two Families" vividly expresses the necessary factors for Bing Xin for an excellent family in the new era - the necessity of knowledge and the necessity of women to learn knowledge. But in this short story, when Bing Xin shows the current situation of the Kochi family, she incorporates her longing and desire for her future love and family environment. The concept has not yet been fully understood. In Ding Ling's literary creation, through a more in-depth analysis of the female images she created in her literary work "Ms. Sophie's Diary", it can be seen that these women broke through the barriers of feudal tradition and used Her actions interpret what is female liberation, and thus express Ding Ling's "life-oriented" and faith-like view of love. Zhang Ailing's concept of love is more clearly reflected in the more important work of her life - "Love in a Fallen City".
