Abstract:We study Hartnell's firefighter problem on infinite trees and characterise the branching number in terms of the firefighting game. Using our results about trees, we give a partial answer to a question of Mart\'inez-Pedroza concerning firefighting on Cayley graphs.

Abstract:In the Firefighter problem, introduced by Hartnell in 1995, a fire spreads through a graph while a player chooses which vertices to protect in order to contain it. In this paper, we focus on the case of trees and we consider as well the Fractional Firefighter game where the amount of protection allocated to a vertex lies between 0 and 1. While most of the work in this area deals with a constant amount of firefighters available at each turn, we consider three research questions which arise when including the sequence of firefighters as part of the instance. We first introduce the online version of both Firefighter and Fractional Firefighter, in which the number of firefighters available at each turn is revealed over time. We show that a greedy algorithm on finite trees is 1/2-competitive for both online versions, which generalises a result previously known for special cases of Firefighter. We also show that the optimal competitive ratio of online Firefighter ranges between 1/2 and the inverse of the golden ratio. Next, given two firefighter sequences, we discuss sufficient conditions for the existence of an infinite tree that separates them, in the sense that the fire can be contained with one sequence but not with the other. To this aim, we study a new purely numerical game called targeting game. Finally, we give sufficient conditions for the fire to be contained, expressed as the asymptotic comparison of the number of firefighters and the size of the tree levels.

Surviving rates of trees and outerplanar graphs for the firefighter problem

Abstract:The firefighter problem is a discrete-time game on graphs introduced by Hartnell in an attempt to model the spread of fire, diseases, computer viruses and suchlike in a macro-control level. To measure the defence ability of a graph as a whole, Cai and Wang defined the surviving rate of a graph G for the firefighter problem to be the average percentage of vertices that can be saved when a fire starts randomly at one vertex of G. In this paper, we prove that the surviving rate of every n-vertex outerplanar graph is at least 1 − Θ( log n n ), which is asymptotically tight. We also show that the greedy strategy of Hartnell and Li for trees saves at least 1 − Θ( log n n ) percentage of vertices on average for an n-vertex tree.

Abstract:The firefighter problem is the following discrete-time game on a graph. Initially, a fire starts at a vertex of the graph. In each round, a firefighter protects one vertex not yet on fire, and then the fire spreads to all unprotected neighbors of the vertices on fire. The objective of the firefighter is to save as many vertices as possible. The surviving rate of a graph is the average percentage of vertices that can be saved when a fire starts randomly at one vertex of the graph, which measures the defense ability of a graph as a whole. In this paper, we study the surviving rates of graphs with bounded treewidth. We prove that the surviving rate of every $n$-vertex outerplanar graph is at least $1-\Theta(\frac{\log n}{n})$, which is asymptotically tight. We also prove that if $k$ firefighters are available in each round, then the surviving rate of an $n$-vertex graph with treewidth at most $k$ is at least $1-O(\frac{k^{2}\log n}{n})$. Furthermore, we show that the greedy strategy of Hartnell and Li [Congr. Numer., 145 (2000), pp. 187-192] for trees saves at least $1-\Theta(\frac{\log n}{n})$ percent of vertices on average for an $n$-vertex tree. Our results settle a conjecture and two problems of Cai and Wang [SIAM J. Discrete Math., 23 (2009), pp. 1814-1826] in affirmative.

Abstract:In this paper we study the complexity of generalized versions of the firefighter problem on trees, and answer several open questions of Finbow and MacGillivray (2009) [8]. More specifically, we consider the version denoted by Max(S,b)-Fire where b≥2 firefighters are allowed at each time step and the objective is to maximize the number of saved vertices that belong to S. We also study the related decision problem (S,b)-Fire that asks whether all the vertices in S can be saved using b≥2 firefighters at each time step.We show that (S,b)-Fire is NP-complete for trees of maximum degree b+2 even when S is the set of leaves. Using this last result, we prove the NP-hardness of Max(S,b)-Fire for trees of maximum degree b+3 even when S is the set of all vertices. On the positive side, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for solving (S,b)-Fire and Max(S,b)-Fire on trees of maximum degree b+2 when the fire breaks out at a vertex of degree at most b+1. Moreover, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for the Max(S,b)-Fire problem (and the corresponding weighted version) for a subclass of trees, namely k-caterpillars. Finally, we observe that the minimization version of Max(S,b)-Fire is not n1−ε-approximable on trees for any ϵ∈(0,1) and b≥1 if P≠NP.

Abstract:The firefighter problem with $k$ firefighters on an infinite graph $G$ is an iterative graph process, defined as follows: Suppose a fire breaks out at a given vertex $v\in V(G)$ on Turn 1. On each subsequent even turn, $k$ firefighters protect $k$ vertices that are not on fire, and on each subsequent odd turn, any vertex that is on fire spreads the fire to all adjacent unprotected vertices. The firefighters' goal is to eventually stop the spread of the fire. If there exists a strategy for $k$ firefighters to eventually stop the spread of the fire, then we say $G$ is $k$-containable. We consider the firefighter problem on the hexagonal grid, which is the graph whose vertices and edges are exactly the vertices and edges of a regular hexagonal tiling of the plane. It is not known if the hexagonal grid is $1$-containable. In arXiv:1305.7076 [math.CO], it was shown that if the firefighters have one firefighter per turn and one extra firefighter on two turns, the firefighters can contain the fire. We improve on this result by showing that even with only one extra firefighter on one turn, the firefighters can still contain the fire. In addition, we explore $k$-containability for birth sequence trees, which are infinite rooted trees that have the property that every vertex at the same level has the same degree. A birth sequence forest is an infinite forest, each component of which is a birth sequence tree. For birth sequence trees and forests, the fire always starts at the root of each tree. We provide a pseudopolynomial time algorithm to decide if all the vertices at a fixed level can be protected or not.
Distance-Restricted Firefighting on Finite Graphs

Abstract:In the classic version of the game of firefighter, on the first turn a fire breaks out on a vertex in a graph $G$ and then $b$ firefighters protect $b$ vertices. On each subsequent turn, the fire spreads to the collective unburnt neighbourhood of all the burning vertices and the firefighters again protect $b$ vertices. Once a vertex has been burnt or protected it remains that way for the rest of the game. In $\textit{distance-restricted firefighting}$ the firefighters' movement is restricted so they can only move up to some fixed distance $d$ and they may or may not be permitted to move through burning vertices. In this paper we establish the NP-completeness of the distance-restricted versions of $b$-Firefighter even on bipartite graphs and present an integer program for computing the exact value. We also discuss some interesting properties of the $\textit{Expected Damage}$ function.

Abstract:The firefighter game problem on locally finite connected graphs was introduced by Bert Hartnell. The game on a graph $G$ can be described as follows: let $f_n$ be a sequence of positive integers; an initial fire starts at a finite set of vertices; at each (integer) time $n\geq 1$, $f_n$ vertices which are not on fire become protected, and then the fire spreads to all unprotected neighbors of vertices on fire; once a vertex is protected or is on fire, it remains so for all time intervals. The graph $G$ has the \emph{$f_n$-containment property} if every initial fire admits an strategy that protects $f_n$ vertices at time $n$ so that the set of vertices on fire is eventually constant. If the graph $G$ has the containment property for a sequence of the form $f_n=Cn^d$, then the graph is said to have \emph{polynomial containment}. In [5], it is shown that any locally finite graph with polynomial growth has polynomial containment; and it is remarked that the converse does not hold. That article also raised the question of whether the equivalence of polynomial growth and polynomial containment holds for Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups. In this short note, we remark how the equivalence holds for elementary amenable groups and for non-amenable groups from results in the literature.
Parameterized Complexity of Firefighting Revisited

Abstract:The Firefighter problem is to place firefighters on the vertices of a graph to prevent a fire with known starting point from lighting up the entire graph. In each time step, a firefighter may be permanently placed on an unburned vertex and the fire spreads to its neighborhood in the graph in so far no firefighters are protecting those vertices. The goal is to let as few vertices burn as possible. This problem is known to be NP-complete, even when restricted to bipartite graphs or to trees of maximum degree three. Initial study showed the Firefighter problem to be fixed-parameter tractable on trees in various parameterizations. We complete these results by showing that the problem is in FPT on general graphs when parameterized by the number of burned vertices, but has no polynomial kernel on trees, resolving an open problem. Conversely, we show that the problem is W[1]-hard when parameterized by the number of unburned vertices, even on bipartite graphs. For both parameterizations, we additionally give refined algorithms on trees, improving on the running times of the known algorithms.

Abstract:We consider random dynamics on the edges of a uniform Cayley tree with $n$ vertices, in which edges are either inflammable, fireproof, or burt. Every inflammable edge is replaced by a fireproof edge at unit rate, while fires start at smaller rate $n^{-\alpha}$ on each inflammable edge, then propagate through the neighboring inflammable edges and are only stopped at fireproof edges. A vertex is called fireproof when all its adjacent edges are fireproof. We show that as $n\to \infty$, the density of fireproof vertices converges to $1$ when $\alpha>1/2$, to $0$ when $\alpha<1/2$, and to some non-degenerate random variable when $\alpha=1/2$. We further study the connectivity of the fireproof forest, in particular the existence of a giant component.

Abstract:The Firefighter problem and a variant of it, known as Resource Minimization for Fire Containment (RMFC), are natural models for optimal inhibition of harmful spreading processes. Despite considerable progress on several fronts, the approximability of these problems is still badly understood. This is the case even when the underlying graph is a tree, which is one of the most-studied graph structures in this context and the focus of this paper. In their simplest version, a fire spreads from one fixed vertex step by step from burning to adjacent non-burning vertices, and at each time step, $B$ many non-burning vertices can be protected from catching fire. The Firefighter problem asks, for a given $B$, to maximize the number of vertices that will not catch fire, whereas RMFC (on a tree) asks to find the smallest $B$ that allows for saving all leaves of the tree. Prior to this work, the best known approximation ratios were an $O(1)$-approximation for the Firefighter problem and an $O(\log^* n)$-approximation for RMFC, both being LP-based and essentially matching the integrality gaps of two natural LP relaxations. We improve on both approximations by presenting a PTAS for the Firefighter problem and an $O(1)$-approximation for RMFC, both qualitatively matching the known hardness results. Our results are obtained through a combination of the known LPs with several new techniques, which allow for efficiently enumerating subsets of super-constant size of a good solution to obtain stronger LPs.

Firefighting with a Distance-Based Restriction

Abstract:In the classic version of the game of firefighter, on the first turn a fire breaks out on a vertex in a graph $G$ and then $k$ firefighters protect $k$ vertices. On each subsequent turn, the fire spreads to the collective unburnt neighbourhood of all the burning vertices and the firefighters again protect $k$ vertices. Once a vertex has been burnt or protected it remains that way for the rest of the game. A common objective with respect to some infinite graph $G$ is to determine how many firefighters are necessary to stop the fire from spreading after a finite number of turns, commonly referred to as containing the fire. We introduce the concept of distance-restricted firefighting where the firefighters' movement is restricted so they can only move up to some fixed distance $d$ per turn rather than being able to move without restriction. We establish some general properties of this new game in contrast to properties of the original game, and we investigate specific cases of the distance-restricted game on the infinite square, strong, and hexagonal grids. We conjecture that two firefighters are insufficient on the square grid when $d = 2$, and we pose some questions about how many firefighters are required in general when $d = 1$.

Abstract:We consider the problem of firefighting to save a critical subset of nodes. The firefighting game is a turn-based game played on a graph, where the fire spreads to vertices in a breadth-first manner from a source, and firefighters can be placed on yet unburnt vertices on alternate rounds to block the fire. In this work, we consider the problem of saving a critical subset of nodes from catching fire, given a total budget on the number of firefighters. We show that the problem is para-NP-hard when parameterized by the size of the critical set. We also show that it is fixed-parameter tractable on general graphs when parameterized by the number of firefighters. We also demonstrate improved running times on trees and establish that the problem is unlikely to admit a polynomial kernelization (even when restricted to trees). Our work is the first to exploit the connection between the firefighting problem and the notions of important separators and tight separator sequences. Finally, we consider the spreading model of the firefighting game, a closely related problem, and show that the problem of saving a critical set parameterized by the number of firefighters is W[2]-hard, which contrasts our FPT result for the non-spreading model.

Abstract:Consider a model of fire spreading through a graph; initially some vertices are burning, and at every given time-step fire spreads from burning vertices to their neighbours. The firefighter problem is a solitaire game in which a player is allowed, at every time-step, to protect some non-burning vertices (by effectively deleting them) in order to contain the fire growth. How many vertices per turn, on average, must be protected in order to stop the fire from spreading infinitely?Here we consider the problem on Z2×[h] for both nearest neighbour adjacency and strong adjacency. We determine the critical protection rates for these graphs to be 1.5h and 3h, respectively. This establishes the fact that using an optimal two-dimensional strategy for all layers in parallel is asymptotically optimal.

Abstract:In the last decade, wildfires have become wider and more destructive. Climate change and the growth of urban areas are among the main factors that increase the risk of large-scale fires. This risk can be lowered with preventive measures. Among them, firefighting lines are used to stop the fire spread and to offer a safe corridor where firefighting resources can be deployed. Due to their high cost of installation and maintenance, the placement of these lines must be carefully planned. In this work, we address this problem from a theoretical perspective. The land is modeled by a mixed graph in which vertices represent areas subject to burn while edges model the possibility of fire spreading from one area to another. Vertices are associated with probabilities of ignition and edges with probabilities of spread. We consider the problem of positioning firefighting lines such that the risk is reduced under a budget constraint. We call this problem Firebreak Location. We study its complexity and prove in particular its NP-hardness even when the graph is planar, bipartite, with a maximum degree four and the probabilities of propagation are equal to one. Planarity and low degree are indeed natural properties of real instances. We also show an efficient polynomial time algorithm for particular instances on trees.

Abstract:We consider the complexity of the firefighter problem where b>=1 firefighters are available at each time step. This problem is proved NP-complete even on trees of degree at most three and budget one (Finbow et al.,2007) and on trees of bounded degree b+3 for any fixed budget b>=2 (Bazgan et al.,2012). In this paper, we provide further insight into the complexity landscape of the problem by showing that the pathwidth and the maximum degree of the input graph govern its complexity. More precisely, we first prove that the problem is NP-complete even on trees of pathwidth at most three for any fixed budget b>=1. We then show that the problem turns out to be fixed parameter-tractable with respect to the combined parameter "pathwidth" and "maximum degree" of the input graph.

Abstract:It is well known that fighting a fire is a hard task. The Firefighter problem asks how to optimally deploy firefighters to defend the vertices of a graph from a fire. This problem is NP-Complete on all but a few classes of graphs. Thankfully, firefighters do not have to work alone, and are often aided by the efforts of good natured civilians who slow the spread of a fire by maintaining firebreaks when they are able. We will show that this help, although well-intentioned, unfortunately makes the optimal deployment of firefighters an even harder problem. To model this scenario we introduce the Temporal Firefighter problem, an extension of Firefighter to temporal graphs. We show that Temporal Firefighter is also NP-Complete, and remains so on all but one of the underlying classes of graphs on which Firefighter is known to have polynomial time solutions. This motivates us to explore making use of the temporal structure of the graph in our search for tractability, and we conclude by presenting an FPT algorithm for Temporal Firefighter with respect to the temporal graph parameter vertex-interval-membership-width.

Abstract:The firefighter problem is a monotone dynamic process in graphs that can be viewed as modeling the use of a limited supply of vaccinations to stop the spread of an epidemic. In more detail, a fire spreads through a graph, from burning vertices to their unprotected neighbors. In every round, a small amount of unburnt vertices can be protected by firefighters. How many firefighters per turn, on average, are needed to stop the fire from advancing?We prove tight lower and upper bounds on the amount of firefighters needed to control a fire in the Cartesian planar grid and in the strong planar grid, resolving two conjectures of Ng and Raff.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the firefighter problem on a graph G=(V,E) that is either finite or infinite. Suppose that a fire breaks out at a given vertex v∈V. In each subsequent time unit, a firefighter protects one vertex which is not yet on fire, and then the fire spreads to all unprotected neighbors of the vertices on fire. The objective of the firefighter is to save as many vertices as possible (if G is finite) or to stop the fire from spreading (for an infinite case).The surviving rate ρ(G) of a finite graph G is defined as the expected percentage of vertices that can be saved when a fire breaks out at a vertex of G that is selected uniformly random. For a finite square grid Pn□Pn, we show that 5/8+o(1)≤ρ(Pn□Pn)≤67243/105300+o(1) (leaving the gap smaller than 0.0136) and conjecture that the surviving rate is asymptotic to 5/8.We define the surviving rate for infinite graphs and prove it to be 1/4 for the infinite square grid, even for more than one (but finitely many) initial fires. For the infinite hexagonal grid we provide a winning strategy if two additional vertices can be protected at any point of the process, and we conjecture that the firefighter has no strategy to stop the fire without additional help. We also show how the speed of the spreading fire can be reduced by a constant multiplicative factor. For triangular grid, we show that two firefighters can slow down the fire in the same sense, which is relevant to the conjecture that two firefighters cannot contain the fire on the triangular grid, and also corrects a previous result of Fogarty (2003).

Abstract:AbstractContinuous and discrete models [1, 5] for firefighting problems are well-studied in Theoretical Computer Science. We introduce a new, discrete, and more general framework based on a hexagonal cell graph to study firefighting problems in varied terrains. We present three different firefighting problems in the context of this model; for two of which, we provide efficient polynomial time algorithms and for the third, we show NP-completeness. We also discuss possible extensions of the model and their implications on the computational complexity.
