Abstract:Layered boridenes M4/3B2 have been experimentally validated as a rising two-dimensional (2D) material family. Herein, we investigate nine kinds of 2D M4/3B2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W) toward their structural stabilities, electronic properties, and hydrogen evolution performances based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results show that except for Cr4/3B2, other 2D M4/3B2 materials are dynamically and kinetically stable and are promising for synthesis and application in hydrogen production. Metallic Ti4/3B2 and Ta4/3B2 monolayers are easily oxidized in aqueous environments as ideal platforms with optimal hydrogen adsorption free energies and exchange current densities around the peak of the activity volcano. Our work provides a systematic guideline for the application of the 2D M4/3B2 family in HER and reveals their underlying electronic origins.

Exploration of two-dimensional molybdenum-borides and potential applications

Abstract:The recent discovery of MBenes has generated interest in two-dimensional metal-borides, which are expected to show rich electrochemical properties. Using evolutionary search combined with ab initio calculations, we discover that the MoB x ( x = 1, 3, and 4) monolayers, two-dimensional metal-borides, are dynamically, mechanically, and thermally stable. Due to their metallic characters, we investigate the potential of application as anode materials of Li-ion batteries. The MoB and MoB 3 monolayers are found to provide excellent properties, combining high Li-specific capacities of 670 and 418 mA h g −1 with low Li diffusion barriers of 0.10 and 0.13 eV, respectively.

Abstract:Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) is an insulator with polar covalent B−N bonds. Based on current research on boron-nitrogen 2D materials and the cluster assembling method, here, we designed five novel monolayers with square lattice formed by tetrahedral B 4 units covalently linked to V-group atoms, namely the B 4 N 2 , B 4 P 2 , B 4 As 2 , B 4 Sb 2 , and B 4 Bi 2 monolayers, via first-principles calculations. Both the B 4 N 2 and B 4 P 2 have good stability , as demonstrated by high cohesive energies, all positive phonon modes, high in-plane Young's modulus and structural integrity through 5 ps’s molecular dynamics simulations at both 300 and 500 K. Moreover, the B 4 P 2 monolayer exhibits metallic properties, whereas B 4 N 2 monolayer is an indirect-bandgap semiconductor with the bandgap of 2.56 eV and appropriate band edge positions, the optical adsorption in visible and UV light region, and high electron mobility for photocatalytic water splitting. Our theoretical study adds new members of 2D boron nitrides (B 4 N 2 ), which can be used as an efficient photocatalyst for water splitting.
High Intrinsic Catalytic Activity of Two-Dimensional Boron Monolayers for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) boron monolayers have been successfully synthesized on silver substrate very recently. Their potential application is thus of great significance. In this work, we explore the possibility of boron monolayers (BMs) as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by first-principle method. Our calculations show that the BMs are active catalysts for HER with nearly zero free energy of hydrogen adsorption, metallic conductivity and plenty of active sites in the basal plane. The effect of the substrate on the HER activity is further assessed. It is found that the substrate has a positive effect on the HER performance caused by the competitive effect of mismatch strain and charge transfer. The indepth understanding of the structure dependent HER activity is also provided.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal borides (MBs) with rich diversity and intrinsic high conductivity attract increasingly focus in energy storage systems. Herein, seven structures (Sc2B2, Ti2B2, V2B2, Cr2B2, Zr2B2, Nb2B2, Mo2B2) were screened from one interesting class of 2D hexagonal 3d/4d M2B2 monolayers to be promising anode materials for Li-/Mg-/Al-ion battery using first principles calculations. Phonon dispersions, energy calculations, configuration analyses, electronic structure analyses and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm their high dynamic stability, strong adsorption and low volume change (< 7%) for Li/Mg/Al storage, and good thermostability with two layers of charge carriers. Furthermore, the high capacities (252-480/504-960/753-1442 mAh/g), low voltages (0.12-0.39/0.16-0.62/0.41-0.78 V), and ultra-low migration energy barriers (2.7-38.2/15.0-83.5/44.1-248.7 meV) in Li/Mg/Al-ion battery are proved. The performance of M2B2 monolayers in different ion batteries shows clear relationships with both the intrinsic nature of M and the electronegativity of charge carrier. For M2B2 monolayers in same period, the one with heavier M has higher dynamical stability, stronger bonding strength with charge carriers and lower reaction voltage. In addition, a specific M2B2 monolayer shows stronger adsorption and slower conduction for the charge carrier with higher electronegativity. This work provides theoretical guidance for developing new MBs anode materials for ion batteries.

A Systematic Computational Investigation of the Water Splitting and N2 Reduction Reaction Performances of Monolayer MBenes

Abstract:Recently, transition metal borides (MBenes, analogous to MXenes) have attracted interest due to their potential applications in energy conversion and storage. In this work, we performed density functional theory calculations to systematically explore the exfoliation properties of 14 MAlB phases and their water splitting and N2 reduction reaction (NRR) performances. Results showed a linear relationship between the binding energy and exfoliation energy with the coefficient (R2) of 0.95, indicating that the lower the binding energy of element Al in MAlB (M2AlB2), the higher the exfoliation energy required to synthesize monolayer MB from MAlB (M2AlB2). NiB (B site) was predicted to possess the best electrocatalytic activity for water splitting, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) among the studied MBenes, and overpotentials on the NiB surface were calculated to be 0.08 V (for HER) and 0.37 V (for OER), respectively. The electronic properties and dynamic simulations indicated that NiB is the best candidate catalyst for water splitting. Conversely, the Fe site on FeB (FeB-Fe) was predicated to have the highest nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) activity among the studied MBenes, with the overpotential ηNRR of 0.11 V. Furthermore, the B site of TaB (TaB-B) was identified as the best NRR catalyst against HER among the studied MBenes considering the HER side reaction.
Computational screening of single-atom transition metals on boron-rich boron nitride nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution catalysis in all pH range

Abstract:Low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts are of crucial importance for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Two-dimensional (2D) boron nitride (B-N) compounds formed by the combination of boron and nitrogen atoms of group III and V elements are promising candidates for electrocatalytic HER due to their significant electronic properties. Hence, an electrocatalyst is computer-aided designed with isolated single atoms of 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals supported on 2D B-N (B2N, B5N3, and B7N5) monolayers to fabricate single-atom catalysts (SACs) with an excellent HER performance. Moreover, pH modulations are considered to improve the HER activity theoretically based on first-principles calculation. Our results indicate that B-N compounds surface doping with transition metal atoms can effectively enhance the HER catalytic performance over a wide range of pH. Among all SACs studied, Co-, Ti-, V-, Nb-, Ru-, Tc-, Zr-, and Os-embedded B2N, Sc-, Cr-, Mn-, Ti-, and Y-embedded B5N3, and Sc- and Mn-embedded B7N5 have excellent catalytic activity under acidic conditions, while Mo-, Ir-, Re-, Ta-, and W-embedded B2N and Ti- and Fe-embedded B7N5 show high catalytic activity under alkaline conditions. Interestingly, Hf@B2N and V@B5N3 systems exhibit promising catalytic activity under acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. Our work offers cost-effective candidates with a wide pH range HER performance for exploring ideal electrocatalysts.
Computational Exploration of Two-Dimensional Vacancy-Free Boridene Sheet and Its Derivatives: High Stabilities and the Promise for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The recent synthesis of a two-dimensional (2D) MBene sheet, referred to as the boridene sheet (Mo4B6Tz), 4 B 6 T z ), has ignited considerable interest in exploring 2D transition metal borides. Boridene has an ordered arrangement of metal vacancies, which are pivotal to its stability. Employing first-principles calculations, we explored the stable phases, electronic properties and catalytic abilities of boridene with different vacancy concentrations (Vm). m ). Our results demonstrate that Vm m significantly influences the cohesive energies of boridene sheets. Phonon spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal the high stability of the vacancy-free boridene Mo6B6T6 6 B 6 T 6 (T = O,-OH), underscoring their potential for experimental realization. Substituting Mo atoms with Nb, Ta, or W enhances the structural stability of boridene sheets, leading to the identification of four stable variants: Nb6B6F6, 6 B 6 F 6 , Ta6B6F6, 6 B 6 F 6 , Ta6B6O6, 6 B 6 O 6 , and W6B6O6. 6 B 6 O 6 . These boridene sheets exhibit metallic behavior, with five structures displaying near-zero Gibbs free energy for hydrogen atom adsorption, indicating their potential as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The uncovering of vacancy-free boridenes and their 2D derivatives greatly broadens the scope of the MBene family.
Improving the hydrogen storage performance of metal-decorated tetragonal boron carbide monolayer: First-principles investigations

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional systems have attracted considerable interest from scientists, due to their high H 2 storage capacity and excellent reversibility. In this context, by means of DFT computations, we predict a novel system known as boron carbide, which can be formed by replacing 50% carbon atoms with boron atoms in tetragonal-graphene. We investigate the hydrogen adsorption performance of pristine and functionalized t-B 4 C 4 sheets with the metals Li/Sc/Ti. Results indicate that metal-decorated t-B 4 C 4 exhibits significantly lower H 2 adsorption energies compared to pristine t-B 4 C 4 . Moreover, the hydrogen storage capacities for Li/Sc/Ti@t-B 4 C 4 are 13.32%, 10.03% and 9.74% respectively. Furthermore, the desorption temperature exceeds the critical temperature of H 2 . Based on activation energy, H 2 can migrate quickly on the t-B 4 C 4 sheet during the adsorption/desorption cycles. Our results indicate that t-B 4 C 4 functionalized with Li/Sc/Ti-metals can be an efficient material for hydrogen storage.

Abstract:We carried out the first-principle calculations on the structure, thermal stability, magnetic configuration, electronic structure, and electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of a class of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal borides (MBenes, where M is Mn, Fe, Cr and Mo; B is boron). The structural and thermal stability of the MBenes was estimated with the cohesive energy, the phonon dispersion curves and the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation calculations. The effects of functionalized groups on the structure of MBenes were also discussed. The magnetic configuration at ground state of both MBenes and their precursors was studied with a sample model. All stable MBenes exhibit metallic transport performance. The valence electrons are generally localized around B–B chains in the unit cell of MBenes, which results in the good stability of MBenes. The free energy of hydrogen adsorption of Mn2B2 is 2 meV for the coverage of 1/8, implying that this 2D boride is a promising candidate for HER application.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene is predicted to possess intriguing physical properties, but its preparation remains challenging due to the high surface energy constraint. Herein, we report a sandwiched epitaxy growth strategy for the controllable preparation of 2D bismuthene between a Cu foil substrate and a h-BN covering layer. The top h-BN layer plays a crucial role in suppressing the structural transformation of bismuthene and compensating for the charge transfer from the bismuthene to the Cu(111) surface. The bismuthene nanoflakes present a superior thermal stability up to 500 °C in air, attributed to the passivation effect of the h-BN layer. Moreover, the bismuthene nanoflakes demonstrate an ultrahigh faradaic efficiency of 96.3% for formate production in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, which is among the highest reported for Bi-based electrocatalysts. This study offers a promising approach to simultaneously synthesize and protect 2D bismuthene nanoflakes, which can be extended to other 2D materials with a high surface energy.
Novel two-dimensional boron-centered graphdiyne analogue as multifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions

Abstract:Seeking multifunctional electrocatalysts capable of driving the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is becoming increasingly crucial in the realm of sustainable energy development . Herein, the multifunctional electrocatalytic activities of HER, OER, and ORR in two-dimensional (2D) boron-centered graphdiyne analogue (B-GDY) are identified by first-principles computations, and its low overpotentials of HER/OER/ORR (0.02/0.55/0.52 V) are comparable to, or even surpasses, well-developed noble-metal-based catalysts. The remarkable multifunctional electrocatalytic activity of B-GDY can be attributed to the unique orbital distribution of the 2D framework as evidenced by its highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO), and synergistic interplay of boron-centered carbocycles and diacetylene linkages in its unique 2D framework. More importantly, the data confirm our motivation by replacing the central C in small aromatic groups with the adjacent element of B can realize/create multi-active sites in the original aromatic functional groups (the simplest boron-centered triangulene-like units). Hence, this study not only provides cost-effective alternatives to metal-based catalysts but also paves the way for designing and developing novel, multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Monolayer AlB$_2$ is composed of two atomic layers: honeycomb borophene and triangular aluminum. In contrast with the bulk phase, monolayer AlB$_2$ is predicted to be a superconductor with a high critical temperature. Here, we demonstrate that monolayer AlB$_2$ can be synthesized on Al(111) via molecular beam epitaxy. Our theoretical calculations revealed that the monolayer AlB$_2$ hosts several Dirac cones along the $\Gamma$--M and $\Gamma$--K directions; these Dirac cones are protected by crystal symmetries and are thus resistant to external perturbations. The extraordinary electronic structure of the monolayer AlB$_2$ was confirmed via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. These results are likely to stimulate further research interest to explore the exotic properties arising from the interplay of Dirac fermions and superconductivity in two-dimensional materials.
Transition-Metal Diboride: A New Family of Two-Dimensional Materials Designed for Selective CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:From both energy and environmental points of view, it is highly desirable to produce organic compounds from greenhouse gas CO2. To reach such an attractive goal, high-performance catalysts are required. In this study, a new family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, transition-metal diboride To (MB2), are theoretically designed. With intrinsic transition-metal-terminated surfaces, MB2 monolayers exhibit a high catalytic activity for the conversion of CO, selectively to CH4. In particular, the OsB2 monolayer has an ultralow limiting potential of -0.4 V for CH4 production. Non-noble-metal-based FeB2 and MnB2 also have a low limiting potential, and they are thus very promising for practical applications. Atomistic mechanisms of the catalyzed CO2 conversion are understood based on the first-principles calculations. Oxygen binding energy is found to be a good descriptor for the catalytic performance, and the activity "volcano" plot suggests that, in the OsB 2 case, it is very close to the optimal value of 6.4 eV. The outstanding catalytic performance of this new type of 2D materials makes them especially attractive for CO2 utilization.
Constructing 1D Boron Chains in the Structure of Transition Metal Monoborides for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Abstract:The forms of boron atoms are many and varied in the structure of transition metal borides (TMBs). The form of boron atoms determines the structure, morphology, and properties of borides. Herein, transition metal monoborides (CrB and WB) with different arrangement of one-dimensional (1D) boron chains were synthesized under high pressures and high temperatures. The 1D boron chains between the interlayers of CrB are parallel to one another, while the 1D boron chains between the interlayers of WB are perpendicular to one another. The morphologies of CrB and WB also show large differences due to the difference in 1D boron chain arrangement. As electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs), CrB and WB show good catalysis activity and durability. WB has the smallest overpotential (210 mV) and Tafel slope (90.09 mV dec−1), which is mainly attributed to the intercrossing boron chains improving the electrical properties of WB, as well as the 5d electrons of W being more chemically active. The TOF value of WB is 1.35 s−1, proving that WB has a higher intrinsic catalytic activity during HERs. This work provides a data reference for the development of high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Prediction of Boridenes as High Performance Anodes for Alkaline Metal and Alkaline Earth Metal Ion Batteries

Abstract:We conduct a comprehensive density functional theory investigation using r 2 SCAN-rVV10 functional on the structural stability and electrochemical properties of Boridenes for their use as the anode materials in the rechargeable alkaline (earth) metal ion batteries (Li + , Na + , K + , Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ). The first-principles molecular dynamics simulations and the reaction thermodynamic calculations conclude that the Mo 4/3 B 2 (OH) 2 and Mo 4/3 B 2 F 2 are unstable against the presence of alkaline (earth) metal ions due to the surface conversion reactions between surface terminations and adsorbates. Meanwhile, the bare Mo 4/3 B 2 and Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 monolayers not only could accommodate alkaline (earth) metal ions, but also able to form the stable multi-layer adsorption structures for most of the studied metal ions (Li + , Na + , K + , Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ). The predicted gravimetric capacities of bare Mo 4/3 B 2 monolayer (Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 ) are 625.9 mAh/g (357.3 mAh/g), 247.20 mAh/g (392.1 mAh/g), 101.8 mAh/g (206.4 mAh/g), 667.0 mAh/g, 413.0 mAh/g (485.4 mAh/g) for Li + , Na + , K + , Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ions, respectively. The bare Mo 4/3 B 2 exhibits a lower onset charging open circuit voltages for alkaline (earth) metal ions than those of Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 . The diffusivities of metal ions are revealed to be high on the Boridene monolayer especially for the outer full stable adsorption layers where the migration energy barriers are found to be less than 0.10 eV. Similar to that of MXenes, the negative electron cloud (NEC) also plays the vital role to stabilize the observed multi-layer adsorption structures for various metal ions on either bare Mo 4/3 B 2 or Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 monolayer.

Abstract:A comprehensive first principles investigation is performed to address the stability, reaction thermodynamics and the electrochemical properties C2N1_xBx and C2B monolayers for the use as the anodes in alkali metal ion batteries (Li, Na and K). The formation of C2N1_xBx structures in terms of the substituting of N in C2N monolayer by B atom is found to the thermodynamically spontaneous above the room temperature. The reaction thermodynamics in the combination with the first principles molecular dynamics simulations confirm the optimal experimental conditions for the preparation of C2N1_xBx or C2B should be a reaction directly between C2N and B element at the moderately high temperature in the range from 500 K to 900 K in the vacuum. For the electrochemical properties, the B-doped C2N show a systematic improvement on theoretical capacities, open circuit voltages and ion diffusion dynamics over those of C2N especially for B-rich C2N1_xBx structures. Nevertheless, owing to its small molar mass and less prominent adsorption site preferences, the overall electrochemical performances of C2B are much superior to those of C2N and ternary C2N1_xBx. Specifically, the theoretical capacities of C2B are predicted to be Li (1546 mAh/g), Na (663 mAh/g) and K (411 mAh/g), respectively. The migration energy barrier heights of C2N1_xBx and C2B are found to be much lower than those of C2N monolayer for the favorable diffusion pathways. Overall, the C2B monolayer is considered as a new 2-D structural platform to provide the high theoretical capacities and small migration energies as the anodes for the alkali metal ion batteries.
Robust Sandwiched B/TM/B Structures by Metal Intercalating into Bilayer Borophene Leading to Excellent Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Bilayer borophene, very recently synthesized on Ag and Cu, possesses extremely flat large surface and excellent conductivity. Besides, the van der Waals gap of bilayer borophene can be intercalated by metal atoms, thereby tailoring the properties of bilayer borophene. Herein, we propose that sandwiched B/TM/B (TM=Co, Ni, Cu, Pd) could be a new 2D formation by transiton metal atoms intercalated into bilayer borophene network, it is quiet robust with both energetic, structural and thermal stability, and exhibits heat resistance of at least 1300 K. Besides, it is novel platform for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The interecalation metal atom serves as single-atomic catalyst, which acting the nonmetal boron layers. Beyond that, the transtion metal is protected by outside boron layers from being corroded by acidic/alkaline solution. B/Cux/B, B/Pdx/B and B/Alx/B with different metal coverage exhibit defect-independent extremely low HER free energy in the range of -0.162 ~ 0.179 eV, -0.134 ~ 0.183 eV and -0.082 ~ 0.086 eV which are comparable to noble metal Pt. Combining excellent conduction, high structural and thermal stability, low resistance to intercalated behaviour, effortless water splitting process, excellent defect-independent catalytic performance, cheapness and abundance of raw materials, free of corrodation, 2D sandwiched B/TM/B (TM=Co, Ni, Cu, Pd) is believed to promising for electrocatalytic HER applications.

Abstract:Using gradient corrected density functional theory and a cluster-based model we have studied the stability and hydrogen-storage properties of monometallic borohydrides, M(BH4)(3), and bimetallic borohydrides, KM(BH4)(4) (M = Al, Ga, Sc). A systematic study of BHx (x = 1-4), M(BH4)(n) (M = Al, Ga, Sc; n = 1-4), and KM(BH4)(4) reveals many interesting results. (i) The vertical detachment energy of BH4- is larger than that of any halogen atom; hence, BH4 can be classified as a superhalogen. (ii) When a metal atom, M, is surrounded with BH4 moieties whose number exceed the valence of the metal atom by one, a new class of highly electronegative molecules referred to as hyperhalogens can be formed. (iii) Both BH4- and M(BH4)(4)(-) can serve as the building blocks of super- and hyper-salts, respectively, when counterbalanced with a metal cation such as K+. (iv) The energy required to remove a hydrogen atom from a bimetallic borohydride such as KAl(BH4)(4) is found to be less than that from the corresponding monometallic borohydride, namely Al(BH4)(3), thus making bimetallic borohydrides potential candidates for hydrogen-storage materials. We hope these results will stimulate experimental investigation into new super- and hyperhalogens and their corresponding salts as potential hydrogen-storage materials.
