Abstract:In recent years, aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted more and more attention not only because they use earth-abundant metals but also due to their improved safety and high volumetric energy density. As one type of promising electrode material for AZIBs, manganese-based materials are receiving considerable attention owing to their high theoretical specific capacity, non-toxicity, and low cost. This mini review summarizes the recent advances on the application of manganese-based materials (manganese oxide, manganate, and their composites) in AZIBs. In addition, the methods to enhance their zinc-ion storage properties are summarized and discussed, such as morphology engineering, doping, as well as compositing with other materials. Ultimately, some personal prospects for future research of the manganese-based materials for AZIBs are also proposed.

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), which use mild aqueous electrolyte, have attracted increasing attention, due to their unique advantages such as low cost, high safety, environmental friendliness, and ease of manufacture. At present, developing a kind of cathode materials with stable structures and large capacities for ZIBs is a hot research topic. Among all ZIBs cathode materials, manganese-based cathode materials have the advantages of low cost, abundant reserves, low toxicity, rich valence states, and high zinc storage capacity, which make them one of the most promising candidates. In recent years, manganese-based composites with different crystal structures have been extensively studied as cathode materials of ZIBs. In this paper, the reaction mechanism of ZIBs cathodes is discussed in detail, and the challenges faced by manganese-based cathode materials and the latest research progress are examined deeply. In addition, a number of optimization strategies aimed at improving the electrochemical performance of the cathode of ZIBs are outlined. Finally, the future prospect of ZIBs is presented.

Abstract:In article number 2001050, Houzhao Wan, Ling Miao, Yi Wang, Hao Wang and co-workers present the valence engineering of manganese oxide through bulk oxygen defects. The resulting material can act as a cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Valence engineering can change the [MnO6] octahedral configuration of manganese oxide to improve structural stability and inhibit the dissolution of Mn2+, thereby greatly improving the cycle life of the battery.

Abstract:This review systematically overviews Mn‐based cathode materials for zinc‐ion batteries from the aspects of phase compositions, electrochemical behaviors, energy storage mechanisms and modification strategies. Some new perspectives on future efforts toward high‐energy and long‐life Mn‐based cathodes for zinc‐ion batteries were also provided. Mn‐based cathodes have been widely explored for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs), by virtue of their high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, Mn‐based cathodes suffer from poor rate capability and cycling performance. Researchers have presented various approaches to address these issues. Therefore, these endeavors scattered in various directions (e. g., designing electrode structures, defect engineering and optimizing electrolytes) are necessary to be connected through a systematic review. Hence, we comprehensively overview Mn‐based cathode materials for ZIBs from the aspects of phase compositions, electrochemical behaviors and energy storage mechanisms, and try to build internal relations between these factors. Modification strategies of Mn‐based cathodes are then introduced. Furthermore, this review also provides some new perspectives on future efforts toward high‐energy and long‐life Mn‐based cathodes for ZIBs.

Abstract:The newly emerging rechargeable batteries beyond lithium-ion, including aqueous and nonaqueous Na-/K-/Zn-/Mg-/Ca-/Al-ion batteries, are rapidly developing toward large-scale energy storage application. The properties of electrode materials are determinant for electrochemical performance of the batteries. By virtue of the prominent features of low cost, non-toxicity, high voltage, and rich valence states, Mn-based electrode materials have attracted increasing attention. The big family of Mn-based materials with rich composition and polymorphs, provides great possibilities for exploring and designing advanced electrode materials for these emerging rechargeable batteries. In this review, three main categories of Mn-based materials, including oxides, Prussian blue analogous, and polyanion type materials, are systematically introduced to offer a comprehensive overview about the development and applications of Mn-based materials in various emerging rechargeable battery systems. Their crystal structure, electrochemical performance, and reaction mechanism are highlighted. In addition, the key issues encountered by many Mn-based materials, including Jahn–Teller distortion, Mn dissolution, crystal water, impact of electrolyte, etc., are also discussed. Finally, challenges and perspectives on the future development of manganese-based materials are provided as well. It is believed this review is timely and important to further promote exploration and applications of Mn-based materials in both aqueous and nonaqueous rechargeable battery systems beyond lithium-ion.

Abstract:Non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels are increasingly depleted.In order to cope with the potential energy crisis,it is urgent to develop clean and efficient renewable energy sources.Advanced energy storage technology based on electrical energy holds critical significance to the sustainable and steady development of human society.Aqueous rechargeable batteries are a kind of promising electrochemical energy storage devices.Zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)are gaining increasing popularity due to their safety,sustainability,cost-effectiveness and high energy density,positioning them as potential successors to current Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)with a high degree of commercialization.The extraordinary mechanical flexibility and excellent electrochemical performance exhibited by ZIBs holds great significance in advancing the development of flexible and wearable batteries.Manganese-based oxides with large channel size possess the characteristics of high theoretical capacity,various oxidation states(including+2,+3,+4)and low cost,which are commonly employed as cathode materials for AZIBs.Nevertheless,the electrochemical performance of current manganese-based ZIBs is not satisfactory,facing the challenges of metal dissolution,material structure instability,notably a strong electrostatic interaction exhibited by divalent Zn2+ions in the host structure resulting in slow transmission kinetics.These challenges contribute to low cycle stability of the battery,impeding practical application and the progression of ZIBs.To solve these problems,diverse structural engineering strategies including defect engineering have been exploited,which can effectively improve the transport kinetics of zinc ions.From the perspective of enhancing the performance of the material itself,interlayer intercalation and other measures can be taken to better the microstructure or morphology of manganese-based materials.By improving the electrical conductivity of the material and enhancing ionic bonding,the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the material can be effectively improved.And from the angle of battery design,in order to improve the stability of the electrode-electrolyte interface,the electrolyte is optimized,or a fresh preparation method different from the conventional slurry coating process is adopted,which is also a promising method to design a new electrode without binder and the electrode components can still be evenly distributed.This review provides an overview of Zinc-ion storage mechanisms:the reversible Zn2+insertion/extraction;the reversible interposition and deintercalation of Zn2+and H+;the chemical conversion reactions,and the mechanism of dissolution-deposition reaction.Furthermore,the challenges faced by manganese-based cathode materials are clarified,and the optimization strategies to improve their electrochemical performance by increasing active sites,reducing solid-state diffusion energy barriers,inhibiting the dissolution of active substances,and improving material stability are highlighted.Finally,the practical application and potential of ZIBs assembled by manganese-based cathode materials in biomedical equipment and other electronic devices are also discussed.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) are regarded as promising electrochemical energy storage devices owing to its low cost, intrinsic safety, abundant zinc reserves, and ideal specific capacity. Compared with other cathode materials, manganese dioxide with high voltage, environmental protection and high theoretical specific capacity receives considerable attention. However, the problems of structural instability, manganese dissolution and poor electrical conductivity make the exploration of high‐performance manganese dioxide still a great challenge and impede its practical applications. Besides, zinc storage mechanisms involved are complex and somewhat controversial. To address these issues, tremendous efforts, such as surface engineering, heteroatoms doping, defect engineering, electrolyte modification, some advanced characterization technologies and so on, have been devoted to improving its electrochemical performance and illustrating zinc storage mechanism. In this review, we particularly focus on the classification of manganese dioxide based on crystal structures, zinc ions storage mechanisms, the existing challenges and corresponding optimization strategies as well as structure‐performance relationship. In the final section, the application perspectives of manganese oxide cathode materials in AZIBs are prospected.

Abstract:The development of advanced cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) is a critical step in building large-scale green energy conversion and storage systems in the future. Manganese dioxide is one of the most well-studied cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries due to its wide range of crystal forms, cost-effectiveness, and well-established synthesis processes. This review describes the recent research progress of manganese dioxide-based ZIBs, and the reaction mechanism, electrochemical performance, and challenges of manganese dioxide-based ZIBs materials are systematically introduced. Optimization strategies for high-performance manganese dioxide-based materials for ZIBs with different crystal forms, nanostructures, morphologies, and compositions are discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future research directions of manganese dioxide-based cathodes in ZIBs are envisaged.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted extensive attention due to their low cost, environmental friendliness, and high volumetric specific capacity. However, the design of cathode materials with high performance for ZIBs is quite limited. In this paper, a kind of manganese-based metal-organic framework/carbon nanotubes (Mn-MOF/CNT) composite is prepared as the cathode material for ZIBs via a one-pot in situ solvothermal method. Particularly, the assembled Mn-MOF/CNT//Zn battery exhibits high specific capacity (260 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1) and excellent capacity retention (approximately 100 %) after 900 cycles at 1000 mA g−1. This significant electrochemical performance is attributed to the high porosity and the high conductivity of Mn-MOF/CNT, as well as the Mn2+ electrolyte additive. This work renders a new sight to design high-performance MOF-based cathode materials for aqueous ZIBs.

Abstract:The intrinsic high safety of rechargeable aqueous batteries makes them particularly advantageous in the field of large-scale energy storage. Among them, rechargeable Zn–Mn batteries with high energy density, low cost, high discharge voltage, and nontoxicity have been considered as one of the most promising aqueous battery systems. However, exiting research on manganese-based cathode materials mainly focuses on diverse manganese oxides analogs, while reports on other promising manganese-based analogs with high performance are still limited. Herein, we report a MnCO3 cathode material, which can be manufactured on a large scale by a facile coprecipitation method. Interestingly, the MnCO3 can spontaneously be converted into MnO2 material during the charging process. The Zn–MnCO3 battery delivers a highly specific capacity (280 mAh g−1) even at the high current density of 50 mA g−1. It is also noteworthy that the battery with a high loading mass (7.2 mg cm−2) exhibits good reversibility of charge–discharge for 2000 cycles, showing a competitive cycling stability in aqueous systems.

Abstract:Thanks to low cost, high safety, and large energy density, aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted tremendous interest worldwide. However, it remains a challenge to develop high-performance cathode materials with an appropriate method that is easy to realize massive production. Herein, we use a molten salt method to synthesize nanostructured manganese oxides. The crystalline phases of the manganese oxides can be tuned by changing the amount of reduced graphene oxide added to the reactant mixture. It is found that the α-MnO2/Mn2O3 nanocomposite with the largest mass ratio of Mn2O3 delivers the best electrochemical performances among all the products. And its rate capability and cyclability can be significantly improved by modifying the Zn anode with carbon black coating and nanocellulose binder. In this situation, the nanocomposite can deliver high discharging capacities of 322.1 and 213.6 mAh g−1 at 0.2 and 3 A g−1, respectively. After 1000 cycles, it can retain 86.2% of the capacity at the 2nd cycle. Thus, this nanocomposite holds great promise for practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract As a new type of secondary ion battery, aqueous zinc‐ion battery has a broad application prospect in the field of large‐scale energy storage due to its characteristics of low cost, high safety, environmental friendliness, and high‐power density. In recent years, manganese dioxide (MnO 2 )‐based materials have been extensively explored as cathodes for Zn‐ion batteries. Based on the research experiences of our group in the field of aqueous zinc ion batteries and combining with the latest literature of system, we systematically summarize the research progress of Zn−MnO 2 batteries. This article first reviews the current research progress and reaction mechanism of Zn−MnO 2 batteries, and then respectively expounds the optimization of MnO 2 cathode, Zn anodes, and diverse electrolytes and their effects on battery performance. Additionally, primary challenges related to different components and their respective strategies for mitigating them are discussed, with the ultimate objective of offering comprehensive guidance for the design and fabrication of high‐performance Zn−MnO 2 batteries. Finally, the future research and development direction of aqueous Zn−MnO 2 batteries with high energy density, high safety and long life is envisioned.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc-based batteries with near-neutral media are standing in the middle of the energy storage field by virtue of their high safety and low cost. However, it is still imperative for Mn-based cathode to improve rate capacity by facilitating ions/electron transfer and long-cycle stability by suppressing Mn dissolution. Herein, promoting electrooxidation kinetics is proposed and employed to construct advanced Mn−Zn battery. The formation of carbon-protected birnessite-MnO 2 is promoted via inducing the electron-donating capability of the heterointerface between the N−C coating and the defective MnO. Moreover, density functional theory calculations also demonstrate that N−C protected birnessite-MnO 2 is more hydrophobic than pure birnessite-MnO 2 , which is beneficial to prohibiting Mn dissolution and other side reactions. As a result, the elaborate design realizes effective transformation from low valence to high valence Mn for high capacity (291 mA·h·g −1 ) and protective bamboos-like structure for rate capacity (126 mAh·g −1 at 5 A·g −1 ) and cycling stability (89% capacity retention after 2,000 cycles). The assembled flexible quasi-solid-state Mn−Zn pouch batteries display application prospects for wearable and implantable electronic devices. The atomic engineering promoting electrooxidation kinetics strategy will be instructive in activating other cathode materials and maximizing their capacity.

Abstract:Owing to the low cost and high safety, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are one of the most attractive candidates to the post lithium-ion batteries. Among the reported cathode materials for ZIBs, manganese (Mn)-based materials hold high promise due to their abundant resources, various crystal structures, high operating voltages (>1.2 V) and decent reversible capacities (>200 mA h g−1). However, Mn-based materials suffer poor cycling stability and rate capability. To address these obstacles, various strategies have been developed and some progress has been achieved. In this review, an overview on the structural influence in the energy storage mechanisms and the challenges of Mn-based materials for aqueous ZIBs was given, and four main strategies including Mn2+ addition in electrolyte, structural adjustment, functional modification and architecture construction, are emphasized and discussed. Moreover, we analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these strategies, provide new insights for the design of high-performance Mn-based ZIBs, and sort out the applications and future opportunities of ZIBs in flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries have been received extensive interest in the resulting energy storage devices due to their high safety, simple operation, environment friendliness and nontoxicity. Herein, we report a composite material of manganese sulfide/reduced graphene oxide (MnS/RGO) as the cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, which exhibits excellent cycling performance. Owing to the synergistic effect of desirable structural characteristic of MnS microsphere and favorable conductivity of the graphene network, the composite material delivers remarkable zinc storage performance. The MnS/RGO electrode exhibits a reversible discharge capacity of 289 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and impressive rate capability of 62 mA h g−1 at 1000 mA g−1. The brilliant electrochemical performance of MnS/RGO is related to the RGO nanosheets, which greatly improves the electrical contact and effectively alleviates the huge volume expansion during charging and discharging.

Abstract:The H+‐induced manganese (Mn) dissolution reaction in manganese oxide cathode for Zn‐ion batteries is effectively mitigated via an electrochemical hydroxylation strategy. The hydroxylated manganese oxide with a high content of Mn‐OH component exhibits good cycling stability over 5000 cycles, without relying on the commonly used Mn2+ additives. Manganese (Mn) oxides are promising cathode materials for rechargeable aqueous Zn‐ion batteries. However, the Mn dissolution in weakly acidic electrolytes always hinders the development of better aqueous Zn–Mn batteries. Herein, a hydroxylated manganese oxide cathode material (H‐MnO2) is fabricated using an electrochemical method for stable aqueous Zn–Mn batteries without relying on the Mn2+ electrolyte additives. The partial hydroxylation of the oxides leads to charge redistribution of the material, changing the reaction thermodynamics and kinetics. Theoretical simulation suggests that the hydroxylation of manganese oxide promotes both Zn2+ adsorption thermodynamics and diffusion kinetics on the surface of H‐MnO2 but weakens the interaction between H+ and the electrode. Therefore, Zn2+ ions can be more reactive with the hydroxylated manganese oxide than H+ ions. Experimental results show that the Zn2+ insertion mechanism dominates the charge storage process of H‐MnO2, and the H+‐induced Mn dissolution reaction is effectively alleviated. Importantly, H‐MnO2 exhibits good cycling stability with 95% capacity retention over 5000 cycles at the current density of 3.8 A g−1 in the ZnSO4 electrolyte, outperforming the state‐of‐the‐art aqueous Zn–Mn batteries, even those with Mn2+ electrolyte additives. The findings provide new insights for designing stable manganese oxide cathodes in aqueous Zn–Mn batteries.

An Amorphous Manganese Iron Oxide Hollow Nanocube Cathode for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries(ZIBs) are attracting considerable attentions for practical energy storage because of their low cost and high safety. Nevertheless, the traditional manganese oxide cathode materials suffer from the low intrinsic electronic conductivity, sluggish ions diffusion kinetics, and structural collapse, hindering their large-scale application. Herein, we successfully developed a latent amorphous Mn 1.8 Fe 1.2 O 4 hollow nanocube(a-H-MnFeO) cathode material derived from Prussian blue analogue precursor. The amorphous nature endows the cathode with lower diffusion barrier and narrower band gap compared with crystalline counterpart, resulting in the superior Zn 2+ ions and electrons transport kinetics. Hollow structure can furnish abundant surface sites and suppress the structural collapse during the repeated charge/discharge processes. By virtue of the multiple advantageous features, the a-H-MnFeO cathode exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance, in terms of high capacity, excellent rate capability, and prolonged cycle life. This strategy will pave the way for the structural design of emerging cathode materials.

Abstract:Low‐cost and highly safe zinc‐manganese batteries are expected for practical energy storage and grid‐scale application. The electrolyte adjustment is further combined to boost their performance output; however, the mechanism behind the electrochemical contrast caused by electrolyte composition remains unclear, which has held back the development of these systems. Hence, new insight into the electrochemical activation of manganese‐based cathodes, which is induced by the aqueous zinc‐ion electrolyte, is provided. The relationship between the desolvation of Zn2+ from [Zn(OH2)6]2+‐solvation shell and the electrolyte/electrode interfacial reaction to form Zn4SO4(OH)6·4H2O phase or its analogues is established, which is the key for the electrochemical activation. Further electrolyte optimization promotes the cycling stability of Zn/LiMn2O4 battery with a long life span over 2000 cycles. This work illuminates the confused direction in exploring electrolyte for zinc‐manganese batteries.
