Abstract:The impact of the industrial and digital (information) revolutions has, undoubtedly, been substantial on practically all aspects of our society, life, firms and employment. Will the forthcoming AI revolution produce similar, far-reaching effects? By examining analogous inventions of the industrial, digital and AI revolutions, this article claims that the latter is on target and that it would bring extensive changes that will also affect all aspects of our society and life. In addition, its impact on firms and employment will be considerable, resulting in richly interconnected organizations with decision making based on the analysis and exploitation of “big” data and intensified, global competition among firms. People will be capable of buying goods and obtaining services from anywhere in the world using the Internet, and exploiting the unlimited, additional benefits that will open through the widespread usage of AI inventions. The paper concludes that significant competitive advantages will continue to accrue to those utilizing the Internet widely and willing to take entrepreneurial risks in order to turn innovative products/services into worldwide commercial success stories. The greatest challenge facing societies and firms would be utilizing the benefits of availing AI technologies, providing vast opportunities for both new products/services and immense productivity improvements while avoiding the dangers and disadvantages in terms of increased unemployment and greater wealth inequalities.

Abstract:The recent successes of AI have captured the wildest imagination of both the scientific communities and the general public. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) heralds a new wave of technological advancement. The domain of scientific writing and publishing, traditionally steeped in human effort, is experiencing an unprecedented transformation through AI's integration, particularly with Large language models (LLMs) and Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs). LLMs have access to and are trained on massive amounts of data. GPTs can understand user inputs, analyze them, and generate human-like responses. Currently there is no consensus amongst researchers or publishers as to what constitutes appropriate use of AI or what AI usage must be declared. As the capabilities and applications of AI grow, it is important to recognize its potential uses and limitations. We aim to describe the implications of AI in scientific writing and publication, exploring its potential to enhance efficiency and reliability, while also highlighting the need for vigilance against its pitfalls.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in medical robots are bringing a new era to medicine. Advanced medical robots can perform diagnostic and surgical procedures, aid rehabilitation, and provide symbiotic prosthetics to replace limbs. The technology used in these devices, including computer vision, medical image analysis, haptics, navigation, precise manipulation, and machine learning (ML) , could allow autonomous robots to carry out diagnostic imaging, remote surgery, surgical subtasks, or even entire surgical procedures. Moreover, AI in rehabilitation devices and advanced prosthetics can provide individualized support, as well as improved functionality and mobility (see the figure). What these applications have in common is that they involve learning and operating in a constrained, predictable environment. • But embedding AI more firmly into our endeavors and enterprises poses a great challenge. To get to the next level, researchers are trying to fuse AI and robotics to create an intelligence that can make decisions and control a physical body in the messy, unpredictable, and unforgiving real world. It's a potentially revolutionary objective that has caught the attention of some of the most powerful tech-research organizations on the planet. "I'd say that robotics as a field is probably 10 years behind where computer vision is," says Raia Hadsell, head of robotics at DeepMind, Google's London-based AI partner. (Both companies are subsidiaries of Alphabet.) • Even for Google, the challenges are daunting. Some are hard but straightforward: For most robotic applications, it's difficult to gather the huge data sets that have driven progress in other areas of AI. But some problems are more profound, and relate to long-standing conundrums in AI. Problems like, how do you learn a new task without forgetting the old one? This paper explores the impact of AI and the critical role of transdisciplinary research in understanding, harnessing, and guiding its evolution. We discuss the evolution of AI from rule-based systems to complex neural networks, followed by various use cases and a case study of the MITRE Corporation's xAcademy platform. Challenges and safety recommendations are presented, and future work is proposed to address ethical, social, and economic implications of AI. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing technological phenomenon that all industries wish to exploit to benefit from efficiency gains and cost reductions. At the macrolevel, AI appears to be capable of replacing humans by undertaking intelligent tasks that were once limited to the human mind. However, another school of thought suggests that instead of being a replacement for the human mind, AI can be used for intelligence augmentation (IA). Accordingly, our research seeks to address these different views, their implications, and potential risks in an age of increased artificial awareness. We show that the ultimate goal of humankind is to achieve IA through the exploitation of AI. Moreover, we articulate the urgent need for ethical frameworks that define how AI should be used to trigger the next level of IA.

Abstract:Over the past half century, there have been several false dawns during which the "arrival" of world-changing artificial intelligence (AI) has been heralded. Tempting fate, the authors believe the age of AI has, indeed, finally arrived. Powerful image generators, such as DALL-E2 and Midjourney have suddenly allowed anyone with access the ability easily to create rich and complex art. In a similar vein, text generators, such as GPT3.5 (including ChatGPT) and BLOOM, allow users to compose detailed written descriptions of many topics of interest. And, it is even possible now for a person without extensive expertise in writing software to use AI to generate code capable of myriad applications. While AI will continue to evolve and improve, probably at a rapid rate, the current state of AI is already ushering in profound changes to many different sectors of society. Every new technology challenges the ability of humanity to govern it wisely. However, governance is usually viewed as both possible and necessary due to the disruption new technology often poses to social structures, industries, the environment, and other important human concerns. In this article, we offer an analysis of a range of interactions between AI and governance, with the hope that wise decisions may be made that maximize benefits and minimize costs. The article addresses two main aspects of this relationship: the governance of AI by humanity, and the governance of humanity by AI. The approach we have taken is itself informed by AI, as this article was written collaboratively by the authors and ChatGPT.

Abstract:The current hype about artificial intelligence makes a sober assessment of the state of the technology and its likely societal impacts difficult. AI researchers, start-ups, investors and the media all have their own incentives to keep the hype going. China and the US compete for pole position in AI research and development, and the EU and most economically advanced countries vie for the remaining top spots. The mighty multinational corporations of the digital economy rival for both new and established researchers and engineers. Where I live, in Montreal, Facebook, Alphabet (Google Brain and Deep Mind), Microsoft and Samsung all lured top scientists into their newly opened labs, and both the provincial and federal governments invested massively to maintain the Canadian edge in AI. If this weren't enough, some of the best fiction of recent years—Ex Machina, Her, Westworld, Ian McEwan's recent Machines Like Me—all hijack our power of imagination so that we keep picturing ourselves...

Abstract:In the largest survey of its kind, 2,778 researchers who had published in top-tier artificial intelligence (AI) venues gave predictions on the pace of AI progress and the nature and impacts of advanced AI systems The aggregate forecasts give at least a 50% chance of AI systems achieving several milestones by 2028, including autonomously constructing a payment processing site from scratch, creating a song indistinguishable from a new song by a popular musician, and autonomously downloading and fine-tuning a large language model. If science continues undisrupted, the chance of unaided machines outperforming humans in every possible task was estimated at 10% by 2027, and 50% by 2047. The latter estimate is 13 years earlier than that reached in a similar survey we conducted only one year earlier [Grace et al., 2022]. However, the chance of all human occupations becoming fully automatable was forecast to reach 10% by 2037, and 50% as late as 2116 (compared to 2164 in the 2022 survey).
