Abstract:This research delves into the development and characterization of polymer composites reinforced with grape stalk extracted lignin biopolymer (GSLB) and Celosia cristata stem fibers (CCS). The primary objective of this research is to develop a biocomposite using biodegradable fibre and fillers derived from biomass wastes as well as to characterize them to know their suitability to be deployed as functional material. The lignin biopolymer was extracted from waste grape stalks, whereas the fiber was extracted from Celosia cristata stems. Utilizing solution casting method, these composites were prepared and underwent comprehensive evaluation with respect to ASTM standards. According to results, it is noted that, among the various fabricated composites, VFL2 emerged with superior fatigue properties, provided with fatigue counts of 26,268, 24,093, and 21,946 for 25%, 50%, and 75% of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS). In terms of creep resistance, VFL3 demonstrated a notable reduction in creep strain, recording values of 0.0018, 0.0039, and 0.0058 for time intervals of 5000 s, 10,000 s, and 15,000 s, respectively. Additionally, in DMA assessments, VFL3 exhibited a significantly high storage modulus of 5.4 GPa and a reduced loss factor of 0.49, indicating enhanced rigidity and damping characteristics. The hydrophobic nature of lignin played a crucial role in influencing the water contact angle of the composites. VFL3, incorporating an optimal ratio of GSLB and CCS, demonstrated an improved water contact angle of 98°, underscoring the enhanced hydrophobic behavior induced by the hydrophobic lignin. These findings contribute significantly to the understanding of sustainable biopolymer composites, showcasing their remarkable performance across various mechanical parameters and in different environmental conditions. The detailed insights gained from this study hold promise for the advancement of eco-friendly materials with enhanced mechanical and surface properties for diverse engineering applications.
