Abstract:The Lewis acidity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted much research interest in recent years. We report here the development of two quantitative methods for determining the Lewis acidity of MOFs-based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of MOF-bound superoxide (O2•-) and fluorescence spectroscopy of MOF-bound N-methylacridone (NMA)-and a simple strategy that significantly enhances MOF Lewis acidity through ligand perfluorination. Two new perfluorinated MOFs, Zr6-fBDC and Zr6-fBPDC, where H2fBDC is 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and H2fBPDC is 2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluoro-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, were shown to be significantly more Lewis acidic than nonsubstituted UiO-66 and UiO-67 as well as the nitrated MOFs Zr6-BDC-NO2 and Zr6-BPDC-(NO2)2. Zr6-fBDC was shown to be a highly active single-site solid Lewis acid catalyst for Diels-Alder and arene C-H iodination reactions. Thus, this work establishes the important role of ligand perfluorination in enhancing MOF Lewis acidity and the potential of designing highly Lewis acidic MOFs for fine chemical synthesis.

Abstract:Transition metal-mediated or -catalyzed carbon-carbon bond or carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions are among the most powerful tools in organic synthesis. In addition, Lewis acid-mediated or -catalyzed organic transformations are widely used. In this context, an effective combination of these two powerful protocols or an efficient cooperation of transition metals with Lewis acids should open a new era in synthetic chemistry. This tutorial review summarizes representative synthetic methodologies developed in the past decades employing this co-operative effect.

Abstract:The synthesis of highly acidic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant research interest in recent years. We report here the design of a strongly Lewis acidic MOF, ZrOTf-BTC, through two-step transformation of MOF-808 (Zr-BTC) secondary building units (SBUs). Zr-BTC was first treated with 1 M hydrochloric acid solution to afford ZrOH-BTC by replacing each bridging formate group with a pair of hydroxide and water groups. The resultant ZrOH-BTC was further treated with trimethylsilyl triflate (Me3SiOTf) to afford ZrOTf-BTC by taking advantage of the oxophilicity of the Me3Si group. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of Zr-bound superoxide and fluorescence spectra of Zr-bound N-methylacridone provided a quantitative measurement of Lewis acidity of ZrOTf-BTC with an energy splitting (Delta E) of 0.99 eV between the pi(x)* and pi(y)* orbitals, which is competitive to the homogeneous benchmark Sc(OTf)(3). ZrOTf-BTC was shown to be a highly active solid Lewis acid catalyst for a broad range of important organic transformations under mild conditions, including Diels-Alder reaction, epoxide ring-opening reaction, Friedel-Crafts acylation, and alkene hydroalkoxylation reaction. The MOF catalyst outperformed Sc(OTf)(3) in terms of both catalytic activity and catalyst lifetime. Moreover, we developed a ZrOTf-BTC@SiO2 composite as an efficient solid Lewis acid catalyst for continuous flow catalysis. The Zr centers in ZrOTfBTC@SiO2 feature identical coordination environment to ZrOTf-BTC based on spectroscopic evidence. ZrOTf-BTC@SiO2 displayed exceptionally high turnover numbers (TONs) of 1700 for Diels-Alder reaction, 2700 for epoxide ring-opening reaction, and 326 for Friedel-Crafts acylation under flow conditions. We have thus created strongly Lewis acidic sites in MOFs via triflation and constructed the MOF@SiO2 composite for continuous flow catalysis of important organic transformations.

Abstract:Two readily-accessible molybdenum complexes with low sterically hindered S, N-bidentate ligands were designed for the reduction of nitrate to nitrite. The Lewis acid Sc(III) acted as a significant co-catalyst to enhance the catalytic efficiency by activating the N-O bond of nitrate. This study indicates that molybdenum complexes in cooperation with a Lewis acid offer functional Mo-catalyst systems, which present functional artificial models of the natural molybdenum enzymes.

Lewis-acid mediated reactivity in single-molecule junctions

Abstract:Recent work has shown that solution-based chemical reactions at a gold electrode can be monitored using molecular conductance and driven by extrinsic stimuli, such as an electric field or electrochemical potential. However, the intrinsic properties of the nanostructured interface may be expected to play important additional functions that are not yet well understood. Here we study single-molecule junctions formed from components having the same molecular backbone functionalized with 12 different sulfur-based linker groups to determine the influence of sulfur-substituent on junction conductance and stability. Remarkably, we find evidence for in situ S–C(sp3) bond breaking, and C(sp2)–C(sp3) bond forming, reactions that are consistent with the ex situ transformations expected for those systems in the presence of a Lewis acid. We also find we approach the limits of substituent influence on the conductance of physisorbed sulfur-bound junctions. As an illustrative example, we show that a tert-butylthio-functionalized 4,4’-biphenyl precursor can form both chemisorbed (Au−S) junctions, consistent with heterolytic S−C(sp3) bond cleavage to generate the stable tert-butyl carbocation, as well as physisorbed junctions that are >1 order of magnitude lower than analogous junctions comprising cyclic “locked” thioether contacts. Our findings are supported by a systematic analysis of model thioether components comprising different simple hydrocarbon substituents of intermediate size, which do not form chemisorbed contacts and further clarify the inverse relationship between conductance and substituent steric bulk. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory also confirm that bulky sulfur-substituents increase the probability of forming junction geometries with reduced electronic coupling between the electrode and π-conjugated molecular backbone. Together, this work helps to rationalize the dual roles that linker molecular structure and metal electrode Lewis character play in mediating interfacial reactions in break-junction experiments. The insights provided may be applied to advance our understanding of heterogeneous chemical processes or develop new molecular electronic components with improved or novel functionality.

Abstract:We present the synthesis and characterization of an Sb(III) stabilized by a bulky bis(imino)dihydroacridanide pincer ligand. The Lewis acidity of the Sb cation is quantified using the Guttmann-Beckett method and confirmed by its reaction with 4-dimethylaminopyridine, which forms a Lewis acid-base adduct. This Sb cation exhibits catalytic activity in the cyanosilylation of arylketones. The electronic structure of the Sb cation as well as the mechanism of the catalytic transformation are explored by density functional theory computations.

Abstract:Since the dawn of organometallic chemistry, transition metal complexes of unsaturated organic molecules, namely π-complexes, have remained a central focus: our thorough understanding of the electronic nature of such species, and their importance in countless reactive processes continues to drive research in their synthesis and utilisation. Since the late 1900s, research regarding the related chemistry for the heavier group 14 elements has become increasingly more fervent. Today, heavier congeners of a vast array of classical π-complexes have been realised, from alkene to arene systems, involving Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb. This has given deeper insights into the bonding observed for these heavier elements, which typically involves a lessened degree of π-bonding and an increased polarisation. This review aims to summarise this field, identifying these disparities, and highlighting areas which we believe may be exciting for future exploration.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates (POMs) have conducive properties such as controlled Brønsted and Lewis acidity, high thermal stability, nontoxic nature, tunable solubility, and less corrosiveness. POMs have been extensively applied in catalytic organic reactions and have an exciting prospect for industrial applications. This review summarized recent progress in the application of POMs as acid catalysts for various organic reactions including CC bond formation, CN bond formation, CO bond formation, heterocyclic synthesis reactions, cyanosilylation and hydrolysis reactions. Various POMs catalysts including heteropoly acids (HPAs) and cationic functionalized HPAs with Brønsted acidity, HPAs supported on non-precious metal support with Brønsted acidity (or both Brønsted and Lewis acidity), transition metal substituted POMs with Lewis acidity were applied in above reactions. This review attempts to provide up-to-date information about POMs acid-catalyzed organic reactions and propose future prospects.

Abstract:The "sulfonated carbons" are a new class of metal-free solid protonic acids characterized by their unique carbon structure and Brønsted acidity (-H0 = 8-11) on par to concentrated H2SO4. These carbon materials covalently functionalized with SO3H groups via C-PhSO3H or C-SO3H linkages can act as versatile water-tolerant solid acids. Due to their low production costs, unique surface chemistry, high chemical and thermal stability, as well as tailorable pore structures they are regarded as potential substitutes to liquid H2SO4. Catalysis, in particular, biomass and large molecule catalysis, is one of the important areas in which acidic carbons have demonstrated exceptional activity and selectivity, outperforming traditional solid acid catalysts (cation-exchange resins, sulfated oxides, and acidic zeolites). In this review we address developments in the different types SO3H- and PhSO3H-functionalized acidic carbon materials, their structure, active sites, and surface properties, applications in catalysis, as well as activation and deactivation characteristics covering important literature since 2004. In particular, we aim to provide a systematic discussion on the specific merits and demerits of such materials obtained from different carbon precursors and functionalization methods which directly influence the structure-stability-acidic properties and catalytic performance.

Abstract:Abstract Complexation of π-conjugated ligands by metal or semimetal ions leads to the enhancement of the planarity and rigidity of π-conjugated systems. Boron, especially, has played a central role in the design of luminescent main-group complexes. However, these complexes still suffer the disadvantage of aggregation-caused quenching as well as typical organic fluorophores. It has recently been reported that some types of boron complexes exhibit the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. Moreover, AIE behavior from complexes and organometallic compounds composed of the other group 13 elements, such as aluminum and gallium, has emerged in this decade. These observations greatly encourage us to develop advanced functional materials based on the group 13 elements. Indeed, recent research has demonstrated that these classes of materials are potentially versatile scaffolds for constructing chromic luminophores, efficiently emissive π-conjugated polymers and so on. This review mainly describes AIE-active group 13 complexes with four-coordinate structures and their application as photo-functional materials. Proposed mechanisms of the origins of AIE behavior are briefly discussed.

Abstract:We describe the synthesis and characterisation of four organic Lewis acids based on fluorophosphoniums, with tetracarbonyl cobaltate as the counter-anion: [R 3 PF] + [Co(CO) 4 ] − (with R = o -Tol, Cy, i Pr, and t Bu). Their catalytic activity was investigated for the carbonylation of β-lactones to succinic anhydrides. In the presence of [ t Bu 3 PF] + [Co(CO) 4 ] − IV (3 mol%), 90% of succinic anhydride was afforded from β-propiolactone after 16 h at 80 °C, at a very mild pressure of 2 bar of carbon monoxide. Our study sets the first example of the use of a main-group cation as a Lewis acidic partner in the cobalt-catalyzed carbonylation of β-lactones.

Abstract:Antimony is a re-emerging contaminant, and its complexation with natural organic matter is rising to ever-increasing levels due to global climate change, which has far-reaching impacts on its environmental fate and mobility. A molecular-level understanding of the interactions between Sb(III) and organic ligands at the solid-liquid interface is of paramount importance in deciphering the effect of these organic ligands. Herein, we identified and characterized Sb(III)-organic ligand complexes in solution and at the goethite-water interface using complementary techniques. The FT-ICR MS, XANES, and DFT calculations show that organic ligands bind Sb(III) through nucleophilic functional groups, such as –COO–, –OH and –HS. The formation of surface ternary Sb(III)-bridging complexes retarded the Sb(III) surface precipitation starting from 3.8 mg-Sb/L to a much higher level at 8.3–13.5 mg-Sb/L. The strong bond between Sb(III) and organic ligands is the key factor to inhibit Sb(III) adsorption, surface precipitation and oxidation under sunlight irradiation. Our results showed the chemical basis for the multifaceted functions of organic ligands in stabilizing trace metalloids such as Sb(III) in the environment.

Abstract:Carbonyl compounds (R 2 C=O) are cornerstones of organic chemistry. In sharp contrast, main group carbonyl analogues (R 2 E=O) derived from p ‐block elements from groups 13 to 15, have long been considered to be elusive species. Employment of chemical tricks such as acid/base stabilization protocols granted access to these transient species in their masked forms. However, electronic and steric effects inevitably perturb their chemical reactivity and distinguish them from classical carbonyl compounds. A new era was marked by the recent isolation of acid‐base (i.e. acid and base) free main group carbonyl analogues, ranging from a lighter boracarbonyl to the heavier silacarbonyls, phosphacarbonyls and a germacarbonyl. Most importantly, the rich chemistry of these unperturbed main group carbonyl compounds has begun to emerge, spanning the vista from classical organic carbonyl‐type reactions to transition metal‐like oxide ion transfer chemistry. The anionic nature of boracarbonyl can be employed to make a strong donor ligand while the cationic phosphacarbonyl exhibits potent Lewis acidity. On the other hand, neutral sila/germacarbonyls display more ambiphilic behaviour. In this review, we survey the strategies used for the isolation of such systems and document their emerging reactivity profiles, with a view to providing fundamental comparisons both with carbon and transition metal oxo species. This highlights the emerging opportunities for exciting 'crossover' reactivity offered by these derivatives of the p ‐block elements.

Abstract:Bis(catecholato)silanes were showcased as strong Lewis acids, while their inherent redox activity remained unexplored in this context. In the present work, we study the oxidation of monomeric bis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-catecholato)silane (1), leading to the Lewis superacidic radicalic silylium ionradical 1•+ (FIA 784 kJ mol−1). Oxidation of 1 with [N(p-C6H4Br)3][B(C6F5)4] yielded [1][B(C6F5)4], displaying strong catalytic activity in the Friedel-Crafts-dimerization, hydrodeoxygenation and carbonyl-olefin-metathesis. It demonstrates how Lewis acidity can be amplified through oxidation without needing an add-on redox-active substituent. Instead, it synergizes the constraining effect of catecholates with their inherent redox non-innocence to unlock enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract:The present review should be seen far beyond pure homage to organometallic lanthanide amide chemistry. The class which is settled between the alkyl and alkoxide counterparts has claimed its own importance within the family of organolanthanide compounds during the last ten years. Meanwhile compound design can fall back on an extensive reservoir of sterically and electronically tailored ligands. Of course, the “lanthanide dilemma” requires special emphasis on structural chemistry, although, encouraging applications should highlight this review. The thermal stability and kinetic lability of the Ln-N bond make this class of lanthanide compounds not only a valuable synthetic precursor. The article covers the literature until mid-1995 and seeks to uncover the current trends in this field.
