Abstract:On the questionnaires of 583 new generations of the peasant workers,correlation analysis,regression analysis and structural equation model were used to examine the specific relations between social network characteristics and reemployment quality,job satisfaction,and the effect of job search strategy among them.The results revealed that: ①Social network characteristics had significant effects on job search strategy;②Social network characteristics had indirect effects on reemployment quality and job satisfaction;③Job search strategy was the full meditating variable in the relationship between social network characteristics and reemployment quality,and was the part meditating variable in the relationship between social network characteristics and job satisfaction.The meditating effect was shown in the two facets of exploratory job search strategy and haphazard job search strategy.
How the size and structure of egocentric networks change during a life transition

Abstract:While social networks are typically relatively stable in size over time, major changes in life circumstances can result in opportunities to acquire new friends. How young adults manage their relationships with their wider network of friends and family during such transitions is, however, not well understood. Using a prospective longitudinal design, we investigate changes in the size and composition of complete egocentric networks of two cohorts of young adults moving away from home to college. We show that, although networks grow rapidly due to an influx of new friends made at college, the social overload that would result is partially mitigated through the progressive loss of pre-transition friendships (but not family relationships). In addition, most of the new relationships are placed in the outermost, emotionally less close network layers that are less costly to maintain. In contrast, the more intimate inner layers of the network remain stable in size, with efforts being made to conserve these relationships. The overriding importance of face-to-face interaction in creating and maintaining ties (compared to digital media) results in the emotional quality of a tie being traded off against the constraints imposed by physical distance. The most reliable predictor of the proportion of original members with whom relationships were maintained post-transition was pre-transition network size, with weaker effects due to geographical proximity and personal popularity in the new social context. These findings have implications for managing transitions to a new environment at any life stage.
Empowering or Burdening? the Short-Lived Benefits and Costs of Upward Networking at Work

Abstract:Research on social networking has primarily focused the long-term consequences of upward networking on actors (e.g., Higgins & Kram, 2001; Lankau & Scandura, 2002), and upward networking has been furthermore found to be uniformly beneficial for actors in the long term. However, we have limited knowledge of in what ways upward networking impacts actors in the short term or immediately. Drawing upon conservation of resources theory, we focus particularly on upward networking – the pursuit of social ties with leaders in support of task and professional goals, and have developed a dual- pathway model that simultaneously examines the immediate benefits and costs of upward networking for employees on a daily basis. In Study 1, we have developed and validated a reliable scale of upward networking using 6 separate samples. In Study 2, utilizing a time- lagged experience sampling methodology across 82 employees who completed twice-daily surveys for 10 consecutive workdays, we examined the immediate effect of daily upward networking on work engagement through a resource gain of perceived impact and a resource loss of ego depletion. we found that the strength of the relationships between daily upward networking and its positive and negative outcomes was moderated by employees’ trait of self-control. Specifically, employees higher in self-control experienced greater impact after engaging in upward networking while those lower in self- control experienced greater ego depletion. Overall, the current study suggests the complex two faces of upward networking, empowering and burdening, on employees’ immediate work outcomes.

Abstract:We investigate the returns to adolescent friendships on earnings in adulthood. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we document that individuals make investments to accumulate friends in addition to educational investments. Because both education and friendships are jointly determined in adolescence, OLS estimates of their returns are biased. To estimate the causal returns to friendships, we implement a novel procedure that assumes the returns to schooling range from 5 to 15% (as the literature has documented), and instrument for friendships using homophily (similarity) measures among peers to obtain bounds on the returns to friendships. We find that having one more friend in adolescence increases earnings between 7 and 14%, which is substantially larger than the OLS estimates: measurement error and omitted variables lead to significant downward bias. We also find suggestive evidence that although some friendships generate larger returns in the labor market (close friendships, friendships with high SES individuals), most friendships appear to have positive returns. Individuals with more friendships in adolescence obtain more schooling and become more social and connected adults, in turn making them more likely to work and to work in higher paying occupations where social skills are rewarded.

Abstract:Going beyond traditional inquiry into social support from local organizational constituents, this project examined how diverse resources from mutually affiliated contacts within and beyond local work environs boost propensity to stay in firms. We deployed Burt’s (1992) name generator and network closure index to more fully assess guanxi networks in China, which comprise strong, dense, and multiplex ties. Specifically, we tested how closed guanxi networks promote job loyalty among Chinese nationals, while investigating how high-commitment human resource management (HRM) systems moderate network effects. We collected egonet data from 417 employees in four high tech firms in China. Hierarchical linear modeling revealed that guanxi network closure increases propensity to stay, whose effects high-commitment HRM reinforce.
Short-term and long-term effects of a social network intervention on friendships among university students

Abstract:Abstract Informal social relations, such as friendships, are crucial for the well-being and success of students at all levels of education. Network interventions can aim at providing contact opportunities in school settings to prevent the social isolation of individuals and facilitate integration between otherwise segregated social groups. We investigate the short-term and long-term effects of one specific network intervention in an undergraduate cohort freshly admitted to an engineering department ( $${\bf{N}}{\boldsymbol{=}}{\bf{226}}$$ N = 226 ). In this intervention, we randomly assigned students into small groups at an introduction event two months prior to their first day at university. The groups were designed to increase mixed-gender contact opportunities. Two months after the intervention, we find a higher rate of friendships, common friends, and mixed-gender friendships in pairs of students who were assigned to the same group than in pairs from different groups (short-term effects). These effects gradually diminish over the first academic year (long-term effects). Using stochastic actor-oriented models, we investigate the long-term trajectory of the intervention effects, while considering alternative network processes, such as reciprocity, transitivity, homophily, and popularity. The results suggest that even though the induced friendship ties are less stable than other friendships, they may serve as early seeds for complex social network processes. Our study shows that simple network interventions can have a pronounced short-term effect and indirect long-term effects on the evolution and structure of student communities.

Network effects across the earnings distribution: payoffs to visible and invisible job finding assistance

Abstract:This study makes three critical contributions to the "Do Contacts Matter?" debate. First, the widely reported null relationship between informal job searching and wages is shown to be mostly the artifact of a coding error and sample selection restrictions. Second, previous analyses examined only active informal job searching without fully considering the benefits derived from unsolicited network assistance (the "invisible hand of social capital") - thereby underestimating the network effect. Third, wage returns to networks are examined across the earnings distribution. Longitudinal data from the NLSY reveal significant wage returns for network-based job finding over formal job searching, especially for individuals who were informally recruited into their jobs (non-searchers). Fixed effects quantile regression analyses show that contacts generate wage premiums among middle and high wage jobs, but not low wage jobs. These findings challenge conventional wisdom on contact effects and advance understanding of how social networks affect wage attainment and inequality.
Star Employees’ Network Evolution and Dynamic Impact on Peer Performance

Abstract:In this study we address two important questions regarding the temporal dynamics of star employees. 1) How do star employees’ and peers’ networks evolve over time? 2) Does star employees’ impact on peers’ performance change over time? Integrating research on network dynamics and relational work, we argue that there are temporal variations in stars’ network evolution and their impacts on peers. Based on personnel and email network data from a health care organization in the United States, we found that internal formal status was positively related to tie creation in stars network and that the proportion of status stars in a group was positively related to tie creation in group members’ network. However, both network-expanding effects diminished over time. Further, we found that the proportion of stars in a group had a changing impact — it dampens group members’ performance in the short-term yet increases it in the long-term. Overall, this study extends research on talent management and network dynamics, offering important theoretical and practical insights.

Abstract:With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, significant use of social network services (SNSs) for career-related purposes has begun to emerge. However, relatively few studies have explored the adverse effects of networking on SNSs, and the existing literature has overlooked its potential consequences. Drawing on upward social comparison theory, this study investigates how networking on SNSs affects career satisfaction through an upward social comparison mechanism leading to ego depletion. To achieve this, we carried out two studies. In Study 1, the hypotheses were tested using a sample of 408 workers. The results indicated that networking on SNSs is negatively related to career satisfaction through a sequential mediation of upward social comparison and ego depletion. In Study 2, we examined this mechanism using a longitudinal design with a three-wave survey of 157 workers, replicating and confirming the findings of Study 1. Both studies demonstrated the process through which networking on SNSs might produce adverse effects on career satisfaction. These findings offer guidance for career counselors, training and development professionals, and managers who want to limit the negative side of networking on SNSs. Different implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Network Social Capital and Labour Market Outcomes: Evidence For Ireland

Abstract:Using data from the International Social Survey Programme 2008 this paper tests empirically the effects of network social capital on Irish employment outcomes, while attempting to account for possible endogeneity. We allow the effects of social networks to vary for different groups and across different localities. We find that an individual’s “weak ties” or acquaintances matter for employment outcomes, whereas their “strong ties”, for example, their friends and family, are less important. The effects, however, vary across age and location. We also find no evidence that the relationship between social participation and employment is endogenous. These findings are discussed with relevance for future research and policy.

Abstract:This study examines the social networks and networking behavior of students graduating from higher education and transitioning to the labor market. To obtain an in-depth understanding of graduating students' social networks, a mixed method social network study was conducted. Network data from 12 graduating students were collected. The results showed that students seek labor market-oriented contacts with individuals in the personal, education, and work contexts. Students received more practical and job-specific support from weak ties (e.g., colleagues at internships) and more social and emotional support from strong ties (e.g., parents and fellow students). The development of a labor market-oriented network occurred spontaneously through social media channels or when students proactively connected with others at educational institutions or job events. However, not all students felt confident developing a network. In these cases, the lack of awareness of relevant network actors, and interpersonal and intrapersonal characteristics play a critical role.

Abstract:Working longer is an important area of research given extended life expectancy, shortfalls of retirement income, desires to remain socially engaged, and solvency concerns of social insurance programs. The purpose of this longitudinal population-based study of older adults is to examine how different types of social resources (social bonding, bridging, and linking) relate to returning to work after retirement. Data were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study of fully retired older adults aged 62+ in 1998 ( N = 8,334) and followed to 2008. After controlling for a comprehensive set of fixed and time-varying covariates, findings suggest that social bridging (informal volunteering) and social linking (formal volunteering, partnered with an employed spouse) were strongly and positively related to returning to work (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 1.49, p < .001; HR: 1.58, p < .0001; and HR: 1.75, p < .0001, respectively). Social bonding resources were not significantly associated with returning to work. Implications for social policy are discussed.

Abstract:This study explored how job seekers perceived human and technological sources in their sociotechnical ego-networks. United States residents ( N = 285) who had sought jobs in the past 2 years responded to questions about their perceptions of sources used during the job search (n = 1297). Participants rated each source they used across a variety of perceived attributes. We measured tie strength using an amalgam of frequency of interaction and closeness, and strong tie sources included humans contacted online and in-person as well as websites. In contrast, the weakest tie sources were direct online application, employment agencies, and career events. Results showed a newly developed perceived bridging scale, social support, ease of access, and homophily were all positively related to tie strength. Influence was negatively related to tie strength. Information quality was not related to tie strength. We discuss implications for network and job search research, theory, and practice.

Abstract:Scholars have disagreed about the role of network structures (structural holes versus network closure) as source of social capital. Delineating interpersonal ties as instrumental and expressive, in this paper, we propose that the influence of network structure on employee retention is contingent on the content of the ties. Further, we examine how employee personal values, such as self-enhancement, may moderate the effects of network structure on retention. Pursuing ones’ own success, self-enhancers are proposed to alienate people by abusing their brokerage positions, thus negatively affecting staying. Yet they would value their expressive network density more, thus positively affecting staying. Using survival analysis, we test our hypotheses with data from 1219 employees in 44 business units in a multinational company in China. Drawing on social network perspectives, our paper contributes to turnover theories, such as theory of job-embeddedness, by investigating how the individual characteristics of those embedded in social networks may moderate the impact of network structure on turnover.
Analysis of the health effects of multiple social networks on the older adult: the substitution role of labor participation

Abstract:Objectives: This study aims to examine the role of social networks in influencing the physical and mental health of older Chinese adults, investigating both the underlying mechanisms and the associations between social networks, labor force participation, and health outcomes. Methods: Using data from the 2021 China General Social Survey (CGSS), we analyzed a sample of 1,332 older adults, incorporating demographic and health-related variables. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and mediation analysis were conducted to evaluate the effects of social networks on health outcomes, with subgroup analyses by gender and education level. Stata 18.0 and SPSS were employed to perform all statistical analyses. Results: Social networks demonstrate a significant positive effect on overall, physical, and mental health at the 1% level, with weak-tie networks exhibiting a more substantial impact on health ( β = 0.1146, p < 0.01). In promoting physical health, social networks have a coefficient of 0.1371 ( p < 0.001) for females and 0.2128 ( p < 0.001) for males. Among individuals with lower education, the coefficient is 0.1561 ( p < 0.001), while for those with higher education, it is 0.2184 ( p < 0.001). Regarding mental health, social networks yield a coefficient of 0.0747 ( p > 0.05) for females and 0.1095 ( p < 0.01) for males; for individuals with lower education, the coefficient is 0.0914 ( p < 0.01), and for those with higher education, it is 0.0441 ( p > 0.05). Media use, subjective wellbeing, and perceived social class are key explanatory mechanisms in the relationship between social networks and health of the older adult. Notably, subjective wellbeing and perceived social class function as chain mediators between social networks and health outcomes. The interaction between social networks and labor participation reveals a significant negative coefficient ( β = −0.1864, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Social networks contribute to improved health in older adults, with weak ties playing a particularly significant role, although the effect varies across subgroups. Media use, subjective social class, and wellbeing are important mechanisms linking social networks with older adult health, while labor force participation may serve as a substitute for social networks in health promotion among older adults. This study will inform the improvement of older adults health and the development of labor policies for older adults.

Abstract:The Strength-of-Strong-Ties Hypothesis (SSTH) suggests that because of cultural and institutional factors, Chinese job seekers benefit more from their strong social ties than weak ones. However, the methodology used to support SSTH has not been subjected to robust empirical examination. Using data from job searches of 172 Chinese college graduates, we compared findings from the commonly used direct effects methodology, which examines the effect on income of the strength of a tie used to find a job, with the more robust social capital methodology, which examines the effect of network resources. We found that compared to the latter, the former overstates the effect of strong ties on getting a high-paying job and understates the effect of weak ties. We discuss methodological and substantive implications of our results for further study of social networks in China.

Abstract:While the literature widely acknowledges the importance of social support to the health, well-being and performance of older adults, little is known about the way in which occupational conditions affect older employees' access to social support over time and whether these effects are maintained after retirement. Accordingly, in the current study we examine the degree to which work hours have longer term effects on the amount and type of support older individuals receive from intimate coworkers, family and non-work friends, and whether these effects are attenuated or intensified for those who retire. Longitudinal data were collected from a random sample of members of nine unions, 6 months prior to their retirement eligibility (T1) and approximately one year after Time 1 (T2). Our findings indicate that while retirement attenuates the positive association between Time 1 work hours and subsequent coworkers' support as well as the negative relationship between Time 1 work hours and subsequent non-work friends support, retirement fails to attenuate the negative effect of Time 1 work hours on subsequent family support. Policy implications are discussed.
Comparing Neighbors and Friends in Age-Related Network Changes

Abstract:Objectives: To assess how the role of neighbors and friends in people's networks changes with age and how this is affected by cohort, marriage, employment, and socioeconomic status. The hypothesis is that for most aspects of the network, friends lose "importance" as people become older, with neighbors gradually becoming more dominant in the nonkin network. Methods: Data are used for people aged 55-90 between 1999 and 2019 from the Swiss Household Panel (N = 5,585). A total of 4 network aspects were measured: size, contact, practical support, and emotional support. Measures for neighbors and friends were compared and analyzed with fixed-effects and hybrid-effects regression models on person-year observations. Results: The sizes of both network segments declined with age but more strongly for friends than neighbors. Contact with friends was stable but contact with neighbors increased. Support from friends declined whereas support from neighbors was stable. Direct comparisons revealed that the relative share of neighbors vis-à-vis friends increased as people age. Friends were more common and supportive vis-à-vis neighbors for divorced and widowed people than for married people, but this gap declined with age. The share of neighbors increased with retirement, especially for men. The share of neighbors vis-à-vis friends was also larger for people with less income and education and this gap did not change with age. Discussion: In the nonkin part of older adults' networks, proximity eventually becomes dominant. This finding is interpreted in terms of rising needs, greater opportunity for local contact, and friend mortality risks, all favoring the neighbor segment of the network.
Stability of the personal relationship networks in a longitudinal study of middle school students

Abstract:The personal network of relationships is structured in circles of friendships, that go from the most intense relationships to the least intense ones. While this is a well established result, little is known about the stability of those circles and their evolution in time. To shed light on this issue, we study the temporal evolution of friendships among teenagers during two consecutive academic years by means of a survey administered on five occasions. We show that the first two circles, best friends and friends, can be clearly observed in the survey but also that being in one or the other leads to more or less stable relationships. We find that being in the same class is one of the key drivers of friendship evolution. We also observe an almost constant degree of reciprocity in the relationships, around 60%, a percentage influenced both by being in the same class and by gender homophily. Not only do our results confirm the mounting evidence supporting the circle structure of human social networks, but they also show that these structures persist in time despite the turnover of individual relationships -- a fact that may prove particularly useful for understanding the social environment in middle schools.

Unemployment Benefits and Job Quality: Unveiling the Complexities of Labour Market Dynamics

Abstract:This study explores the impact of unemployment benefits on employment quality, job stability, and tenure within complex labour market dynamics. Given the macroeconomic consequences of changes in unemployment benefits, including their impact on employment rates and output growth, we develop a closed macroeconomic model that integrates heterogeneous households and adaptive firms and incorporates real-world entry-exit market mechanisms. The model considers personal values, social norms, and social network formation among workers as we examine the role of social contacts in mediating the effects of unemployment benefits on job-matching quality and labour market outcomes. We simulate the model across various scenarios where unemployment benefit schemes differ in level and/or duration. Our results suggest that extending the duration of unemployment benefits does not necessarily improve job-matching quality. Longer benefits may indeed reduce the effectiveness of social networks in job finding, indicating that social contacts play a key role in labour market dynamics.
