Abstract:The ability to controllably manipulate complex topological polar configurations such as polar flux-closures via external stimuli may allow the construction of new electromechanical and nanoelectronic devices. Here, using atomically resolved in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy, we find that the polar flux-closures in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattice films are mobile and can be reversibly switched to ordinary single ferroelectric c or a domains under an applied electric field or stress. Specifically, the electric field initially drives movement of a flux-closure via domain wall motion and then breaks it to form intermediate a/c striped domains, whereas mechanical stress first squeezes the core of a flux-closure toward the interface and then form a/c domains with disappearance of the core. After removal of the external stimulus, the flux-closure structure spontaneously recovers. These observations can be precisely reproduced by phase field simulations, which also reveal the evolutions of the competing energies during phase transitions. Such reversible switching between flux-closures and ordinary ferroelectric states provides a foundation for potential electromechanical and nanoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Electrically switchable magnetic and electronic properties are promising for quantum sensing and information technology. Here, we report an electrically driven magnetic and electronic phase transition in molecular electronic crystal, potassium-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan, with the magneto-electric switching over 105 cycles at room temperature. Electron spin resonance study reveals the cooperative transition between spin and charge degrees of freedom. In addition, the mechanistic spectroscopy studies suggest the charges in an inhomogeneous conductorinsulator mixed state. The findings shown here suggest electrically controlled ordering in strongly correlated molecular crystal leads to dynamic magneto-electric switching, paving the way for developing molecular-based memory and switching devices.

Despite numerous breakthrough findings made recently, a theoretical systematization is still lacking. In the present paper we are making a step on the way of systematization. A powerful technique that molecular-statistical physics is has been applied to an assembly of polar molecules influenced by electric field. Totally, the three polar nematic phases were found to be stable at various conditions: the double-splay ferroelectric nematic $N_F^{2D}$ (observed in the lower-temperature range in the absence or at low electric field), the double-splay antiferroelectric nematic $N_{AF}$ (observed at intermediate temperature in the absence or at low electric field) and the single-splay ferroelectric nematic $N_F^{1D}$ (observed at moderate electric field at any temperature below transition into paraelectric nematic $N$ and in the higher-temperature range (also below $N$) at low electric field or without it. A paradoxal transition from $N_F^{1D}$ to $N$ induced by application of higher electric field has been found and explained. A transformation of the structure of polar nematic phases at application of electric field has also been investigated by Monte Carlo simulations and experimentally by observation of POM images. In particular, it has been realized that, at planar anchoring, $N_{AF}$ in the presence of moderate out-of-plane electric field exhibits the twofold splay modulation: antiferroelectric in the plane of the substrate and ferroelectric in the plane normal to the substrate. Several additional sub-transitions related to fitting confined geometry of the cell by the structure of polar phases were detected.

Abstract:Control of coupling between electric and elastic orders in ferroelectric bulks is vital to understand their nature and enrich the multifunctionality of polarization manipulation applied in domain-based electronic devices such as ferroelectric memories and data storage ones. Herein, taking (1 - x%)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-x%PbTiO3 (PMN-x%PT, x = 32, 40) as the prototype, we demonstrate the less-explored mechanical switching in relaxor ferroelectric single crystals using scanning probe microscopy. Low mechanical forces can induce metastable and electrically erasable polarization reversal clearly from electrical-created bipolar domains around the 180 degrees domain wall in monoclinic PMN-32%PT and inside the c+ domain in tetragonal PMN-40%PT. The mechanical switching evolutions show force/time dependence and time-force equivalence. The time-dependent mechanical switching behavior stems from the participation and contribution of polar nanoregions. Flexoelectricity and bulk Vegard strain effect can account for the mechanical switching but notably, the former in the two has very different origins. These investigations exhibit the possibility of mechanical switching as a tool to manipulate polarization states in ferroelectric bulks, and provide the potential of these crystals as substrates in mechanical polarization control of future thin-film devices.

Abstract:A hybrid metal halide crystal actuator is reported to show six responsive switches through a room temperature‐triggered structural phase transition, including macroscopic deformation, enthalpy, dielectric permittivity, photoluminescence, circularly polarized light excited photoluminescence, and photoelectric response. This study provides an exciting example of phase transition crystals for the development of integrated multifunctional materials. Integrating multiple switching behaviors in a single material is conducive to the development of smart devices, but still faces challenges, especially in finding new types of multiresponsive materials. Hybrid metal halides have been becoming promising candidates with the potential to exhibit changes in various physical and chemical properties upon structural phase transitions. Herein, a pair of enantiomers (R/S‐3‐OHPD)PbI3 (1R/1S; 3‐HOPD = 3‐hydroxypiperidine cation) is reported to show multichannel switching behaviors around room temperature triggered by a combined order‐disorder and displacive type phase transition that arouses a large lattice reorganization and shape change of the crystals. Owing to the inherent chiral, noncentrosymmetric, and semiconducting characteristics of the compounds, five other switching behaviors are realized besides the macroscopic deformation, that is, enthalpy, dielectric permittivity, photoluminescence, circularly polarized light excited photoluminescence, and photoelectric response. This study provides an exciting example of phase transition crystals for the development of integrated multifunctional materials.

Polarization Effect and Electric Potential Changes in the Stimuli-Responsive Molecular Monolayers under an External Electric Field

Abstract:Under the exerted external electric field (E-ex), significant polarization effects are demonstrated in the switching process of positively charged oligopeptide chains I on the gold surface by using the polarizable force-field-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The changes of electrostatic environment during the conformational switching are described by calling density functional theory (DFT) calculations of atomic charges or fragment-centered dipole moments. The charge-variable polarizable force field (Q-POL) model shows a good agreement with the experimental observations of both the open-circuit state (OC) without E-ex and extended/bent conformation (ON/OFF) with upward/downward E-ex, while the nonpolarizable force field (Non-POL) with the fixed atomic partial charges fails to reproduce experiments for the ON state. The charged oligopeptide chains (with each residue furnished with a positive charge) challenge the application of the coarse-graining polarizable force field based on the fragment dipoles (D-frag-POL). Through tracing the dynamics of charge centers of both counterions and oligopeptide chains in the switching process, a qualitative picture is depicted for understanding the polarization phenomena in the dielectric monolayer in OC/ON/OFF states. With the applied electric field, the rearrangement of ions leads to the induced internal E-field, E-in, in the direction opposite to E-ex. The values of total electric field, E-total, and the interfacial potential Phi(x) were evaluated. The relationship between the applied electric potential and the interfacial potential is built for the switching OC/ON/OFF states. The analysis of the induced internal E-field and interfacial potential may shed light on the further modification of theoretical models to better understand the electrical-induced switching mechanism.
External Electric Field-Induced Phase Transition of a Series of Energetic Pentazole Crystals: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:A first-principles study was performed to investigate the gradient rule of crystal and electronic features, nonbonded interactions, and vibrational characteristics of series of energetic pentazole crystals (N2H5)+N5 –, (NH3OH)+N5 –, and (NH4)+N5 – under external electric fields. It is found that phase transition of (N2H5)+N5 – occurred at 0.006 a.u. and that of (NH4)+N5 – occurred at 0.01 a.u., and the phase transition are reflected in almost all properties of these energetic pentazole crystals. The analysis on electronic structure indicates that external electric field could make it easier for electrons to transition from the occupied orbitals to empty ones for (N2H5)+N5 – and (NH3OH)+N5 –, while making it more difficult for that for (NH4)+N5 –. The discussion on intermolecular interactions shows that the rearrangement and the change in the hydrogen bond network occurred. Besides, external electric field could enhance the hydrogen bond interactions for (N2H5)+N5 –, while it could weaken the hydrogen bond interactions for (NH3OH)+N5 – and (NH4)+N5 –. The analysis on vibrational properties reveals that most vibrational modes present redshift for all pentazole crystals. Our findings lay the theoretical foundation for the application of energetic pentazole materials under extreme conditions.

Abstract:Strongly correlated electron materials that exhibit rich phase transition and multiple phase separation have shown many fascinating properties. Using these properties in the electronic device will require the ability to control their phase transition and phase separation behaviours. In this work, we report a sensitive electric field control of first-order phase transition in epitaxial (011)-Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3/0.71Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.29PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) heterostructure. The pristine film shows phase separation character with the penetration of the ferromagnetic metallic phase into the charge and orbital ordered antiferromagnetic insulating phase, and this was revealed by the XMCD and XLD investigation. The (011)-oriented PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal adopted can exert anisotropic in-plane tensile strains on the epitaxial Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 film when applying the electric field. The coaction of the electric field-induced strain and polarization effects of the PMN-PT piezoelectrics enable the efficient manipulation of orbital ordering and the coupled electronic and magnetic phase transitions. Accordingly, a small +1.6 kV cm−1 electric field can recover the first-order metal-insulator transition which was inhibited in the pristine heterostructure, increase the transition temperature by 56 K and the maximum resistance change reaches 7033%. Furthermore, the electric field demonstrated non-volatile control of magnetization, and the magnetoelectric coefficient reaches 1.89 × 10−7 s m−1 at 200 K. This work indicates that choosing the piezoelectric substrate with appropriate electric-field-induced strain opens a route to designing functional electronic devices where the tunable macroscopic properties derive from strongly interacting degrees of freedom present in the manganite.

Emergence of paraelectric, improper antiferroelectric, and proper ferroelectric nematic phases in a liquid crystal composed of polar molecules

Abstract:We have elaborated a theoretical approach for the description of polar nematic phases observed by Nishikawa et al. [Adv. Mater. 29, 1702354 (2017)0935-964810.1002/adma.201702354], their structures, and transitions between them. Specific symmetry contributions to the pair molecular potentials provide the molecular mechanisms responsible for the formation of proper and improper polarity on the macroscopic level. An improper antiferroelectric nematic M2 phase can arise between paraelectric nematic M1 and proper ferroelectric nematic MP in the temperature scale. The local polarization in M2 arises mostly due to the local splay deformation. The director distribution in M2 represents the conjugation of cylindrical waves with opposite splay and polarization signs. The director and polarization are parallel to the cylindrical domain axes in the middle of each cylinder but exhibit considerable (mostly radial) deformation on the periphery of each cylinder. Polarization vectors are mostly stacked antiparallel on the borders between the domains without the director disruption. The domain size decreases with the decreasing temperature, the percentage of the antiferroelectric decouplings increases, and M2 exhibits the first-order phase transition into proper ferroelectric MP. With the increasing temperature the domain size in the M2 phase increases, the domination of particular polar orientation of molecules reduces, and finally, the domain size diverges at particular temperature corresponding to the second-order phase transition from M2 to paraelectric M1. Variations of the polar and nonpolar orientational order parameters are estimated within each phase and between the phases. Our experimental and computer simulation results (also presented in the paper) fully support our theoretical findings.

Abstract:We show clear experimental evidence for two phase transitions in titanium doped lead magnesium niobate compositional disordered ferroelectrics. One is the diffuse phase transition near the temperature of the dielectric permittivity maximum, which is often called the characteristic of relaxor ferroelectrics (relaxors). Another is a first-order transformation from relaxor ferroelectric to normal ferroelectric, corresponding to a zero-field spontaneous polar micro-macrodomain switching. According to X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, thermal analysis and transmission electron microscope (TEM) results, a dynamic behavior of polar microregions is necessary to explain the phenomena, which is more similar to a stress induced martensitic transformations form cubically stabilized perovskite parent-phase. It is also observed that the dynamic behavior of polar regions was influenced by the titanium doping.
Noncollinear ferroelectric and screw-type antiferroelectric phases in a metal-free hybrid molecular crystal

Abstract:Noncollinear dipole textures greatly extend the scientific merits and application perspective of ferroic materials. In fact, noncollinear spin textures have been well recognized as one of the core issues of condensed matter, e.g. cycloidal/conical magnets with multiferroicity and magnetic skyrmions with topological properties. However, the counterparts in electrical polarized materials are less studied and thus urgently needed, since electric dipoles are usually aligned collinearly in most ferroelectrics/antiferroelectrics. Molecular crystals with electric dipoles provide a rich ore to explore the noncollinear polarity. Here we report an organic salt (H2Dabco)BrClO4 (H2Dabco = N,N'-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium) that shows a transition between the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases. Based on experimental characterizations and ab initio calculations, it is found that its electric dipoles present nontrivial noncollinear textures with $60^\circ$-twisting angle between the neighbours. Then the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric transition can be understood as the coding of twisting angle sequence. Our study reveals the unique science of noncollinear electric polarity.

Thermally Tunable Asymmetric Metamolecule

Abstract:The Mie resonance of two dielectric meta-atoms causes a destructive coupling effect between them and results in hybridization induced transparency in the metamolecule. By actively adjusting the temperature, permittivities of the dielectric with opposite temperature coefficients vary in contrary trends, appearing as the field redistribution in each meta-atom. At the same time, two collective modes of the metamolecule behave as addition and subtraction of magnetic fields in meta-atoms. Combining both the intrinsic properties of materials and the collective properties of the coupling “dimer” system together, varying degrees of asymmetry of the metamolecule are obtained as the temperature changes. Since the intensity of the excited magnetic field can reflect the resonance amplitudes of the metamolecule onto the incident wave, the ratio of the transmission amplitudes of the two collective modes changes in a manner similar to the average magnetic field intensity of the metamolecule in two hybridized modes. Based on this behavior, we propose a method to estimate the degree of asymmetry of the metamolecule according to the field distribution intensity.
Ultrafast Electric Field-Induced Phase Transition in Bulk Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 under High-Intensity Terahertz Irradiation

Abstract:Ultrafast polarization switching is being considered for the next generation of ferroelectric-based devices. Recently, the dynamics of the field-induced transitions associated with this switching have been difficult to explore, due to technological limitations. The advent of terahertz (THz) technology has now allowed for the study of these dynamic processes on the picosecond (ps) scale. In this paper, intense THz pulses were used as a high-frequency electric field to investigate ultrafast switching in the relaxor ferroelectric, Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3. Transient atomic-scale responses, which were evident as changes in reflectivity, were captured by THz probing. The high-energy THz pulses induce an increase in reflectivity, associated with an ultrafast field-induced phase transition from a weakly polar phase (Cc) to a strongly polar phase (R3c) within 20 ps at 200 K This phase transition was confirmed using X-ray powder diffraction and by electrical measurements, which showed a decrease in the frequency dispersion of relative permittivity at low frequencies.

Abstract:Materials can be transformed from one crystalline phase to another by using an electric field to control ion transfer, in a process that can be harnessed in applications such as batteries, smart windows and fuel cells. Increasing the number of transferrable ion species and of accessible crystalline phases could in principle greatly enrich material functionality. However, studies have so far focused mainly on the evolution and control of single ionic species (for example, oxygen, hydrogen or lithium ions). Here we describe the reversible and non-volatile electric-field control of dual-ion (oxygen and hydrogen) phase transformations, with associated electrochromic and magnetoelectric effects. We show that controlling the insertion and extraction of oxygen and hydrogen ions independently of each other can direct reversible phase transformations among three different material phases: the perovskite SrCoO3-δ (ref. 12), the brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 (ref. 13), and a hitherto-unexplored phase, HSrCoO2.5. By analysing the distinct optical absorption properties of these phases, we demonstrate selective manipulation of spectral transparency in the visible-light and infrared regions, revealing a dual-band electrochromic effect that could see application in smart windows. Moreover, the starkly different magnetic and electric properties of the three phases-HSrCoO2.5 is a weakly ferromagnetic insulator, SrCoO3-δ is a ferromagnetic metal, and SrCoO2.5 is an antiferromagnetic insulator-enable an unusual form of magnetoelectric coupling, allowing electric-field control of three different magnetic ground states. These findings open up opportunities for the electric-field control of multistate phase transformations with rich functionalities.

Abstract:Macroscopic polarization switching via directional electron transfer has attracted great attention owing to its potential application in data storage devices, sensors, and energy conversion. However, the acquisition of the desired polar crystals is still a huge challenge to realize polarization switching. Here, a heterometallic [CrCo] complex with an enantiopure ligand was successfully obtained by stepwise synthetic route, which effectively avoids the contamination caused by the lack of recognition of chiral ligands. Both compound 1∙sol and its desolvated form, 1 , are packed in the polar P 2 1 space group. These forms exhibit valence tautomerism to varying degrees and interconversion to each other through single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation, which enables solvent-dependent polarization switching behavior. Moreover, both forms display trapping of the photo-induced electron-transferred states upon light irradiation. These findings highlight the effectiveness of using enantiopure ligands in constructing polar crystals with versatile polarization switching behavior.

Liquid-crystal-like dynamic transition in ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices

Abstract:Nanostructured ferroelectrics display exotic multidomain configurations resulting from the electrostatic and elastic boundary conditions they are subject to. While the ferroelectric domains appear frozen in experimental images, atomistic second-principles studies suggest that they may become spontaneously mobile upon heating, with the polar order {\sl melting} in a liquid-like fashion. Here we run molecular dynamics simulations of model systems (PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices) to study the unique features of this transformation. Most notably, we find that the multidomain state looses its translational and orientational orders at different temperatures, resembling the behavior of liquid crystals and yielding an intermediate hexatic-like phase. Our simulations reveal the mechanism responsible for the melting and allow us to characterize the stochastic dynamics in the hexatic-like phase: we find evidence that it is thermally activated, with domain reorientation rates that grow from tens of gigahertzs to terahertzs in a narrow temperature window.

Abstract:Ultrafast stimuli can stabilize metastable states of matter inaccessible by equilibrium means. Establishing the spatiotemporal link between ultrafast excitation and metastability is crucial to understanding these phenomena. Here, we use single-shot optical-pump, X-ray-probe measurements to provide snapshots of the emergence of a persistent polar vortex supercrystal in a heterostructure that hosts a fine balance between built-in electrostatic and elastic frustrations by design. By perturbing this balance with photoinduced charges, a starting heterogenous mixture of polar phases disorders within a few picoseconds, resulting in a soup state composed of disordered ferroelectric and suppressed vortex orders. On the pico-to-nanosecond timescales, transient labyrinthine fluctuations form in this soup along with a recovering vortex order. On longer timescales, these fluctuations are progressively quenched by dynamical strain modulations, which drive the collective emergence of a single supercrystal phase. Our results, corroborated by dynamical phase-field modeling, reveal how ultrafast excitation of designer systems generates pathways for persistent metastability.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the hybrid molecule-based multiferroic compound (ND4)2FeCl5D2O in the zero-field incommensurate cycloidal phase and the high-field quasi-collinear phase. The spontaneous electric polarization changes its direction concurrently with the field-induced magnetic transition, from mostly aligned with the crystallographic a-axis to the c-axis. To account for such change of polarization direction, the underlying multiferroic mechanism was proposed to switch from the spin-current model induced via the inverse Dzyalloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the p-d hybridization model. We perform a detailed analysis of the inelastic neutron data of (ND4)2FeCl5D2O using linear spin-wave theory to quantify magnetic interaction strengths and investigate possible impact of different multiferroic mechanisms on the magnetic couplings. Our result reveals that the spin dynamics of both multiferroic phases can be well-described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with an easy-plane anisotropy. We do not find notable differences between the optimal model parameters of the two phases. The hierarchy of exchange couplings and the balance among frustrated interactions remain the same between two phases, suggesting that magnetic interactions in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O are much more robust than the electric polarization in response to delicate reorganizations of the electronic degrees of freedom in an applied magnetic field.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique properties such as a colossal polarization, high electro-optic activity, and high fluidity. However, despite large efforts in designing and developing new ferrofluid molecules based on molecular parameters, the control and stabilization of ferroelectric nematic phase transitions remain challenging. Here, we discuss the impact of mixing 1,3-dioxane-tethered fluorinated (DIO) diastereomer molecules, namely trans DIO and cis DIO, in controlling the ferroelectric nematic phase transition, using X-ray diffraction to investigate the effect of smectic cybotactic cluster formation. Our results show that the ferroelectric nematic phase transition can be tuned by a smooth exchange of the ferroelectric nematic trans DIO and non-liquid crystal cis DIO components, where the similar dipole and molecular backbone of the two components ensures a consistent macroscopic polarization of the diastereomeric-controlled ferroelectric nematic phase.
