Abstract:The discovery and development of organometallic catalysts is of paramount importance in modern organic synthesis, among which the ligand scaffolds play a crucial role in controlling the activity and selectivity. Over the past several decades, d8 transition-metal complexes of pincer ligands have been developed extensively thanks to their easy structural modification, versatile reactivities, and high stability. One paradigm is the bis(phosphine)-based pincer iridium complexes PCP-Ir, which are highly active for alkane dehydrogenation, partly due to their high thermostability. However, except for alkane dehydrogenation and related transformations, few applications of pincer iridium catalysis have been seen in organic synthesis. This mainly arises from the low functional-group compatibility and poor substrate scope and the limited catalytic chemistry that invariably involves Ir(I/III) redox processes initiated by oxidative addition of substrates to 14-electron (PCP)Ir fragments (the proposed catalytically active intermediates). In this Account, we describe our endeavor on the development of a new family of PCN-Ir complexes with initial intention on creating more efficient alkane dehydrogenation catalysts. The replacement of a soft, σ-donor phosphine arm in the PCP ligands by a harder, π-acceptor N-heteroarene (pyridine or oxazoline) not only provides an additional platform to modify the structural properties but also offers new modes of bond activation and novel reactivities and catalysis. One uniqueness of the PCN-Ir system lies in the formation, via ortho-C(sp2)-H cyclometalation of the pyridine unit in the PCNPy ligand, of the neutral monohydride (PCC)IrIIIHL (L = neutral ligand), which catalyzes positional and stereoselective 1-alkene-to-(E)-2-alkene isomerization. Moreover, the PCN-Ir catalysts effect ethanol dehydrogenation without decarbonylation, allowing for transfer hydrogenation of unactivated alkenes and trans-selective semihydrogenation of internal alkynes with user-friendly ethanol as the H-donor. Another feature originates from the ability of the pentacoordinate hydrido chloride complex (PCN)IrIIIHCl to undergo reversible solvent-coordination-induced-ionization (SCII), furnishing a cationic monohydride [(PCN)IrIIIH(Sol)]+Cl- bearing an uncoordinated Cl anion that effects selective hydrometalation of internal alkynes over the corresponding (Z)-alkenes; the resulting (PCN)IrIII(vinyl)Cl complex undergoes amine-assisted formal alcoholysis involving the protonation of the Cl anion by the activated IrIII-bound EtOH, again via the SCII pathway. Together these elementary reactions lay the foundation for cis-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes with EtOH. Further, the design of the oxazoline-containing chiral complexes (PCNOxa)IrIIIHCl enables asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of alkenes/ketones with ethanol. The efficient catalytic α-alkylation of unactivated esters/amides with alcohols is another case showing the benefit that the PCN-Ir catalyst can offer. These examples illustrate the profound impact of the pincer ligands on the reactivities and catalysis. We hope this Account will provide an in-depth view into the fundamentals of pincer iridium chemistry and ultimately broaden its applications in organic synthesis.

Abstract:The preparation and full characterization of an iridium complex of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion is reported. It was prepared by B-H bond activation using a tosyl amide directing group. Analysis by spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography revealed the presence a direct B-Ir interaction. The carborane acts as a B,N chelating ligand towards the Ir(Cp*)(solvent) fragment, resulting in a monomeric complex that is inert in solution and the solid state. Treatment with N-chlorosuccinimide resulted in selective monochlorination of the B-Ir position. In addition, its structure, spectroscopic features and reactivity were investigated by DFT calculations.

Abstract:While thiocarbonyl-stabilised phosphonium ylides generally react upon flash vacuum pyrolysis by the extrusion of Ph3PS to give alkynes in an analogous way to their carbonyl-stabilised analogues, two examples with a hydrogen atom on the ylidic carbon are found to undergo a quite different process. The net transfer of a phenyl group from P to S gives (Z)-configured 1-diphenylphosphino-2-(phenylsulfenyl)alkenes in a novel isomerisation process via intermediate λ5-1,2-thiaphosphetes. These prove to be versatile hemilabile ligands with a total of seven complexes prepared involving five different transition metals. Four of these are characterised by X-ray diffraction with two involving the bidentate ligand forming a five-membered ring metallacycle and two with the ligand coordinating to the metal only through phosphorus.

Abstract:A series of iridium(I) and rhodium(I) carbonyl phosphine complexes bearing bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) borate ligands [H2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]Rh(CO)(PPh3) (5), [F2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]Rh(CO)(PPh3) (6), [F2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]Ir(CO)(PPh3) (7), [H2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]Rh(CO)(PCy3) (8), [F2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]Rh(CO)(PCy3) (9), and [F2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)] Ir(CO)(PCy3) (10) (H2B(Im(t)Bu)(2) = dihydrobis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene)borate; F2B(Im(t)Bu)(2) = difluorobis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene) borate) have been prepared and characterized. IR stretching values of the CO ligands, the values of NMR coupling constants J(Rh-P), and electrochemical data are rationalized by the electronic effects of the bis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene) borate and phosphine ligands. The results show that the sigma donor capacity of bis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene) borate is stronger than those of the analogous isoelectronic bis(pyrazolyl) borate (Bp(-)) and acetylacetonato (acac(-)) ligands. The molecular structures of complexes 6-10 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed square-plane geometries around the metal centers. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Two new pincer bis (carbene) ligands and corresponding ruthenium (II) carbonyl iodide complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of complexes 3 and 4 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Complexes 3 and 4 have been proved to be efficient catalysts in the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone.

Abstract:Iridium dibromide complexes of the phenyldiimine ligand 2,6-bis(1-((2,6-dimethylphenyl)imino)ethyl)phenyl, trans -( Xy PhDI)IrBr 2 L, have been synthesized, and relative Ir-L BDFEs have been experimentally determined for a wide range of corresponding adducts of ligands L. An estimate of the absolute enthalpy of Ir-L binding has been obtained from dynamic NMR measurements. The results of DFT calculations are in very good agreement with the relative and absolute experimental values. Computational studies were extended to the formation of adducts of ( Xy PhDI)IrH 2 and ( Xy PhDI)Ir I , as well as other (pincer)Ir I fragments, (Phebox)Ir I and (PCP)Ir I , to enable a comparison of electronic and steric effects with these archetypal pincer ligands. Attempts to reduce ( Xy PhDI)IrBr 2 (MeCN) to a hydride or an Ir I complex yielded a dinuclear CN-bridged complex with a methyl ligand on the cyanide-C-bound Ir center (characterized by scXRD), indicating that C-CN bond cleavage took place at that Ir center. DFT calculations indicate that the C-CN bond cleavage occurs at one Ir center with strong assistance by coordination of the CN nitrogen to the other Ir center.

Abstract:The para-N-pyridyl-based PCP pincer proligand 3,5-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)-2,6-dimethylpyridine (pN-tBuPCP-H) was synthesized and metalated to give the iridium complex (pN-tBuPCP)IrHCl (2-H). In marked contrast with its phenyl-based congeners, e.g., (tBuPCP)IrHCl and derivatives, 2-H is highly air-sensitive and reacts with oxidants such as ferrocenium, trityl cation, and benzoquinone. These oxidations ultimately lead to intramolecular activation of a phosphino-t-butyl C(sp3)-H bond and cyclometalation. Considering the greater electronegativity of N than C, 2-H is expected to be less easily oxidized than simple PCP derivatives; cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations support this expectation. However, 2-H is calculated to undergo metal-ligand-proton tautomerism (MLPT) to give an N-protonated complex that can be described with resonance forms representing a zwitterionic complex (with a negative charge on Ir) and a p-N-pyridylidene (a remote N-heterocyclic carbene) Ir(I) complex. One-electron oxidation of this tautomer is calculated to be dramatically more favorable than direct oxidation of 2-H (ΔΔG° = -31.3 kcal/mol). The resulting Ir(II) oxidation product is easily deprotonated to give metalloradical 2• which is observed by NMR spectroscopy. 2• can be further oxidized to give cationic Ir(III) complex, 2+, which can oxidatively add a phosphino-t-butyl C-H bond and undergo deprotonation to give the observed cyclometalated product. DFT calculations indicate that less sterically hindered analogues of 2+ would preferentially undergo intermolecular addition of C(sp3)-H bonds, for example, of n-alkanes. The resulting iridium alkyl complexes could undergo facile β-H elimination to afford olefin, thereby completing a catalytic cycle for alkane dehydrogenation driven by one-electron oxidation and deprotonation, enabled by MLPT.

The Versatile Coordination Modes of Monophosphine-O-carborane in the Formation of Iridium and Rhodium Complexes: Synthesis, Reactivity, and Characterization.

Abstract:Monophosphine-o-carborane has four competitive coordination modes when it coordinates to metal centers. To explore the structural transitions driven by these competitive coordination modes, a series of monophosphine-o-carborane lr,Rh complexes were synthesized and characterized. [Cp*M (Cl)(2){1-(PPh2)-1,2-C2B10H11}] (M=Ir (1a), Rh (1b); Cp* = eta(5)-C5Me5), [Cp*Ir(H){7-(PPh2)-7,8-C2B9H11}] (2a), and [1-(PPh2)-3-(eta(5)-Cp*)-3,1,2-MC2B9H10] (M =Ir (3a), Rh (3b)) can be all prepared directly by the reaction of 1-(PPh2)-1,2-C2B10H11 with dimeric complexes [(Cp*MCl2)(2)] (M=Ir, Rh) under different conditions. Compound 3b was treated with AgOTf (OTf=CF3SO3-) to afford the tetranuclear metallacarborane [Ag-2(thf)(2)-(OTf)(2){1-(PPh2)-3-(eta(5)-Cp*)-3,1,2-RhC2B9H10}(2)] (4b). The arylphosphine group in 3a and 3b was functionalized by elemental sulfur (1 equiv) in the presence of Et3N to afford [1-{(S)PPh2}-3-(eta(5)-Cp*)-3,1,2-MC2B9H] (M=Ir (5a), Rh (5b)). Additionally, the 1-(PPh2)-1,2-C2B10H11 ligand was functionalized by elemental sulfur (2 equiv) and then treated with [(Cp*IrCl2)(2)], thus resulting in two 16-electron complexes [Cp*Ir(7-{(S)PPh2}-8-S-7,8-C2B9H9)] (6a) and [Cp*Ir(7-{(S)PPh2}-8-S-9-OCH3-7,8-C2B9H9)] (7a). Compound 6a further reacted with nBuPPh(2), thereby leading to 18-electron complex [Cp*Ir(nBuPPh(2))(7-{(S)PPh2}-8-S-7,8-C2B9H10)] (8a). The influences of other factors on structural transitions or the formation of targeted compounds, including reaction temperature and solvent, were also explored.

Abstract:Several novel zwitterionic half-sandwich complexes and pseudocloso metallacarboranes based on 1,2-(PPh(2))(2)-1,2-C(2)B(10)H(10) were successfully prepared, and further study proved that some of them can activate H(2) to form the metal hydride complexes Cp*M(H)(7,8-(PPh(2))(2)-7,8-C(2)B(9)H(10)) (M = Rh, Ir).

Abstract:A 16-electron half-sandwich Ir(III) complex ((CpIr)-Ir-star(SCN-Ph)C2H10H11, 2) featuring an o-carboranylthio-amidate ligand has been synthesized, and its reactivity has been studied in detail. 2 reacts with donor ligands to afford a stable 18-electron configuration. Interestingly, the electron-deficient iridium complex 2 underwent an Ir-S bond insertion reaction with DMAD to produce an acetylene insertion product 5. Complex 2 also reacted with the [(CpIr)-Ir-star] unit, produced by the reaction between [(CpIrCl2)-Ir-star](2) and AgOTf, to form a unique binuclear species with a metal-metal bond. Moreover, a selective B(6)-H bond activation of the o-carborane complex has also been achieved.

Abstract:Compound 1,3-diethyl-4-iodo-imidazolium iodide (H-1(I)) has been metalated at the C2 position through an oxidative addition/rearrangement reaction sequence. The oxidative addition of the C4–I bond to low-valent transition metals [M(PPh3)4] (M = Pd, Pt) yields presumably complexes bearing an abnormal carbene (aNHC) ligand. These complexes undergo a subsequent intermolecular rearrangement leading via metalation of the C2 position to the classical monometallic NHC complexes [2] and [3]. A plausible mechanism for the formations of [2] and [3] is proposed based on DFT calculations and MS studies. The reaction of hexafluorophosphonium salt H-1(PF6) with [Pd(PPh3)4] yields via oxidative addition of the C4–I bond to Pd0 the expected PdII aNHC complex [4](PF6).

Abstract:Popular carbene‐based CCC‐pincer platforms have been utilized to access a less studied 5‐/6‐coordinate Rh(III) system, exhibiting high E‐regioselectivity in catalytic alkyne hydrosilylations. NHC pincers (NHC = N‐heterocyclic carbene), which combine the structural benefits of both carbenes and pincer platforms, have shown diverse applications, spanning from fundamental organometallic chemistry to homogeneous catalysis. Although aryl‐bridged bis(NHCs) represent the earliest developed and most studied type of NHC pincers, such [C^C^C]‐platforms have been underutilized in the synthesis of rhodium complexes. In this study, we present several less explored organorhodium(III) complexes featuring [C^C^C]‐pincers. Their synthetic route via a convenient oxidative addition approach has been explored, and the obtained cyclorhodium(III) complexes show versatile coordination geometry (square pyramidal or octahedral). Additionally, these cyclorhodium(III) complexes exhibit very different regioselectivity in catalytic alkyne hydrosilylations compared to known Rh(III) NHC catalytic systems. Finally, a few mechanistic studies have also been conducted, and a plausible mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:Iridium(I) and rhodium(I) carbonyl complexes [H2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]M(CO)(2) (M = Ir, 1a; M = Rh, 1b) with the bis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene)borate ligand have been prepared. Reactions of 1a,b with [FeCp2][PF6] or AgPF6 unexpectedly yielded the B-F products [F2B(Im(t)Bu)(2)]M(CO)(2) (M = Ir, 2a; M = Rh, 2b), respectively. IR peaks of the CO ligands have been used to evaluate the electronic effects of bis(3-tert-butylimidazol-2-ylidene)borate and its fluorinated derivative.
Methyleneimidazoline Complexes of Iridium, Rhodium, and Palladium from Selective C(sp3)-H Bond Activation.

Abstract:Palladium, iridium, and rhodium complexes of 2-methyleneimidazolines have been synthesized by selective phosphine-assisted activation of the 2-methyl C-H bonds in 2-methylimidazolium compounds. Metallacycles of various sizes were obtained in the reaction of phosphine-tethered 2-methylimidazolium compounds and [{M(cod)X}(2)] (M = Rh or Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; X = alkoxyl or Cl). Representative complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The selectivity for aliphatic C(sp(3))H versus aromatic C(sp(2))H activation could be adjusted by means of the steric bulk of the OR ligand, whereby a bulky OR group favors activation of the 2-methyl C(sp(3))-H bond. Experimental results confirmed that a methyl C-H activation product (a seven-membered iridacycle) is the kinetic product, while the aryl C-H activation product (a six-membered iridacycle) is the thermodynamic product.

Abstract:Iridium(iii)-induced selective B(2,3)-H and C-H bond activations at mono- and bi-p-methoxybenzeneazo-substituted m-carboranes have been investigated. A powerful methodology is introduced for the preparation of unique polynuclear complexes featuring m-carboranyl ligands in a single step. The experimental results highlight that the base employed in the reaction plays a key role in the formation and the structures of the complexes.

Abstract:Chelation-assisted activation of C-X bonds (X = Cl, Br, and I) took place in the reaction of [Rh(PPh3)(2)(acetone)(2)](+) and 2-(2-halophenyl)pyridine or 10-halobenzo[h]quinoline. A series of 16-electron five-coordinate cationic rhodium(III) monohalide complexes was synthesized at room temperature. Neutral octahedral rhodium(III) dihalide complexes were obtained when the corresponding cationic monohalide complexes were further heated in acetone. Rhodium and iridium diiodides with these cyclometalation motifs could be alternatively synthesized from the reaction of the corresponding cyclometalated hydride complexes and I-2. X-ray crystal structures of representative monohalide and dihalide complexes are reported, Octahedral rhodium(III) dihalide complexes are active catalysts for the dimerization of terminal alkynes, while 16-electron cationic rhodium(III) monohalides are inactive.

Abstract:The synthesis of iridium(III) complexes containing bulky porphyrin ligands is described. The chiral iridium(III) complex of the D4-symmetric Halterman porphyrin ligand [Ir((+)-D4-Por)Me(L)] (L = solvent) is an effective catalyst for enantioselective intramolecular carbene insertion into saturated C-H bonds of α-diazoesters, giving the corresponding cis-β-lactones in good isolated yields (up to 87%), excellent stereoselectivities (cis products exclusively), and good enantioselectivities (up to 78% ee). © 2013 American Chemical Society.
