Fusion Engineering and Design
Abstract:In Neutral Beam Injectors (NBI) for fusion applications very large ion currents (40 A) at High voltage HV (1 MeV) will be generated and transported to the neutralizer. Keeping the accelerating electrodes at high voltage requires advanced electrical technologies and complex interfaces, tested at 700 kV and 1 MV, with frequent breakdowns, triggered also by local failures or voltage fluctuations. The system must handle them without damage to the electrode grids. An adequate gas pumping in accelerator gaps is thus required also in consideration of the gas flow from ion source and outgassing accelerator walls. A lower pressure also decreases the heat load on the electrode grids and so improves the NBI efficiency. Arrays of several small additional apertures in the electrode supports are here proposed to increase their vacuum conductance, thus enhancing nearby the vacuum level. Indication from the Paschen law and other high voltage models are also reviewed. The breakdown risk increases also in presence of equipotential line distortions, which give high electric fields, in the case of few apertures of large diameter. Preliminary electrostatic potential simulations on the new grid supports and further discussions with respect to the breakdown risk increase will also be given.
