Abstract:Current optical atomic clocks do not utilize their resources optimally. In particular, an exponential gain in sensitivity could be achieved if multiple atomic ensembles were to be controlled or read-out individually, even without entanglement. However, controlling optical transitions locally remains an outstanding challenge for neutral atom based clocks and quantum computing platforms. Here we show arbitrary, single-site addressing for an optical transition via sub-wavelength controlled moves of tweezer-trapped atoms, which we perform with $99.84(5)\%$ fidelity and with $0.1(2)\%$ crosstalk to non-addressed atoms. The scheme is highly robust as it relies only on relative position changes of tweezers and requires no additional addressing beams. Using this technique, we implement single-shot, dual-quadrature readout of Ramsey interferometry using two atomic ensembles simultaneously, and show an enhancement of the usable interrogation time at a given phase-slip error probability. Finally, we program a sequence which performs local dynamical decoupling during Ramsey evolution to evolve three ensembles with variable phase sensitivities, a key ingredient of optimal clock interrogation. Our results demonstrate the potential of fully programmable quantum optical clocks even without entanglement and could be combined with metrologically useful entangled states in the future.

Abstract:Benefiting from the recent progress in precise engineering of quantum states and sub-10 mHz linewidth lasers,the stability and accuracy of optical atomic clocks have reached and even exceeded the 10-18 level,surpassing their microwave counterparts by over two orders of magnitude[1,2].These advances lead to an anticipated redefinition of the international system of units(SI)second in terms of an optical reference transition as early as 2026.Besides promoting positioning,navigation and timing(PNT),optical atomic clocks are also pushing the frontiers of quan-tum sensing and fundamental physics research,for example,resolving the gravitational redshift on the millimeter scale[3],tightening constraint on variation of fundamental constants[4],and hunting for dark matter[5].

Abstract:Building scalable quantum systems that demonstrate performance enhancement based on entanglement is a major goal in quantum computing and metrology. The main challenge arises from the fragility of entanglement in large quantum systems. Optical atomic clocks utilizing a large number of atoms have pushed the frontier of measurement science, building on precise engineering of quantum states and control of atomic interactions. However, state-of-the-art optical atomic clocks are limited by a fundamental source of noise stemming from fluctuations of the population of many atoms—the quantum projection noise. Here, we present an optical clock platform integrated with collective strong-coupling cavity quantum electrodynamics for quantum non-demolition measurements. Optimizing the competition between spin measurement precision and loss of coherence, we measure a metrological enhancement for a large ensemble of atoms beyond the initial coherent spin state. Furthermore, a movable lattice allows the cavity to individually address two independent subensembles, enabling us to spin squeeze two clock ensembles successively and compare their performance without the influence of clock laser noise. Although the clock comparison remains above the effective standard quantum limit, the performance directly verifies 1.9(2) dB clock stability enhancement at the 10 −17 level without subtracting any technical noise contributions.

To this end, we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates with 99.62(3)% fidelity—averaged over symmetric input states—through Rydberg interactions 15,17,18 and dynamical connectivity 19 for optical clock qubits, which we combine with local addressing 16 to implement universally programmable quantum circuits. Using this approach, we generate a near-optimal entangled probe state 1,4 , a cascade of Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger states of different sizes, and perform a dual-quadrature 5 Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger read-out. We also show repeated fast phase detection with non-destructive conditional reset of clock qubits and minimal dead time between repetitions by implementing ancilla-based quantum logic spectroscopy 20 for neutral atoms. Finally, we extend this to multi-qubit parity checks and measurement-based, heralded, Bell-state preparation 21,22,23,24 . Our work lays the foundation for hybrid processor–clock devices with neutral atoms and more generally points to a future of practical applications for quantum processors linked with quantum sensors 25 .

Abstract:The development of precise atomic clocks plays an increasingly important role in modern society. Shared timing information constitutes a key resource for navigation with a direct correspondence between timing accuracy and precision in applications such as the Global Positioning System. By combining precision metrology and quantum networks, we propose a quantum, cooperative protocol for operating a network of geographically remote optical atomic clocks. Using nonlocal entangled states, we demonstrate an optimal utilization of global resources, and show that such a network can be operated near the fundamental precision limit set by quantum theory. Furthermore, the internal structure of the network, combined with quantum communication techniques, guarantees security both from internal and external threats. Realization of such a global quantum network of clocks may allow construction of a real-time single international time scale (world clock) with unprecedented stability and accuracy.

Abstract:We describe protocols for passive atomic clocks based on quantum interrogation of the atoms. Unlike previous techniques, our protocols are adaptive and take advantage of prior information about the clock's state. To reduce deviations from an ideal clock, each interrogation is optimized by means of a semidefinite program for atomic state preparation and measurement whose objective function depends on the prior information. Our knowledge of the clock's state is maintained according to a Bayesian model that accounts for noise and measurement results. We implement a full simulation of a running clock with power-law noise models and find significant improvements by applying our techniques.

Abstract:Optical atomic clocks are our most precise tools to measure time and frequency1–3. Precision frequency comparisons between clocks in separate locations enable one to probe the space–time variation of fundamental constants4,5 and the properties of dark matter6,7, to perform geodesy8–10 and to evaluate systematic clock shifts. Measurements on independent systems are limited by the standard quantum limit; measurements on entangled systems can surpass the standard quantum limit to reach the ultimate precision allowed by quantum theory—the Heisenberg limit. Although local entangling operations have demonstrated this enhancement at microscopic distances11–16, comparisons between remote atomic clocks require the rapid generation of high-fidelity entanglement between systems that have no intrinsic interactions. Here we report the use of a photonic link17,18 to entangle two 88Sr+ ions separated by a macroscopic distance19 (approximately 2 m) to demonstrate an elementary quantum network of entangled optical clocks. For frequency comparisons between the ions, we find that entanglement reduces the measurement uncertainty by nearly , the value predicted for the Heisenberg limit. Today's optical clocks are typically limited by dephasing of the probe laser20; in this regime, we find that entanglement yields a factor of 2 reduction in the measurement uncertainty compared with conventional correlation spectroscopy techniques20–22. We demonstrate this enhancement for the measurement of a frequency shift applied to one of the clocks. This two-node network could be extended to additional nodes23, to other species of trapped particles or—through local operations—to larger entangled systems. An elementary quantum network of two entangled atomic clocks is demonstrated; the high fidelity and speed of entanglement generation show that entangled clocks can offer practical enhancement for metrology.

Abstract:State-of-the-art atomic clocks are based on the precise detection of the energy difference between two atomic levels, measured as a quantum phase accumulated in a given time interval. Optical-lattice clocks (OLCs) now operate at or near the standard quantum limit (SQL) that arises from the quantum noise associated with discrete measurement outcomes. While performance beyond the SQL has been achieved in microwave clocks and other atomic sensors by engineering quantum correlations (entanglement) between the atoms, the generation of entanglement on an optical-clock transition and operation of such a clock beyond the SQL represent major goals in quantum metrology that have never been demonstrated. Here we report creation of a many-atom entangled state on an optical transition, and demonstrate an OLC with an Allan deviation below the SQL. We report a metrological gain of $4.4^{+0.6}_{-0.4}$ dB over the SQL using an ensemble consisting of a few hundred 171Yb atoms, allowing us to reach a given stability $2.8{\pm}0.3$ times faster than the same clock operated at the SQL. Our results should be readily applicable to other systems, thus enabling further advances in timekeeping precision and accuracy. Entanglement-enhanced OLCs will have many scientific and technological applications, including precision tests of the fundamental laws of physics, geodesy, or gravitational wave detection.
Improving the Q Factor of an Optical Atomic Clock Using Quantum Nondemolition Measurement

Abstract:Quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement is a remarkable tool for the manipulation of quantum systems. It allows specific information to be extracted while still preserving fragile quantum observables of the system. Here we apply cavity-based QND measurement to an optical lattice clock---a type of atomic clock with unrivalled frequency precision---preserving the quantum coherence of the atoms after readout with 80\% fidelity. We apply this technique to stabilise the phase of an ultrastable laser to a coherent atomic state via a series of repeated QND measurements. We exploit the improved phase-coherence of the ultrastable laser to interrogate a separate optical lattice clock, using a Ramsey spectroscopy time extended from 300~ms to 2~s. With this technique we maintain 95\% contrast and observe a seven-fold increase in the clock's \emph{Q} factor to $1.7\times10^{15}$.

Abstract:Many-particle entanglement is a key resource for achieving the fundamental precision limits of a quantum sensor. Optical atomic clocks, the current state-of-the-art in frequency precision, are a rapidly emerging area of focus for entanglement-enhanced metrology. Augmenting tweezer-based clocks featuring microscopic control and detection with the high-fidelity entangling gates developed for atom-array information processing offers a promising route towards leveraging highly entangled quantum states for improved optical clocks. Here we develop and employ a family of multi-qubit Rydberg gates to generate Schrödinger cat states of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) type with up to 9 optical clock qubits in a programmable atom array. In an atom-laser comparison at sufficiently short dark times, we demonstrate a fractional frequency instability below the standard quantum limit using GHZ states of up to 4 qubits. However, due to their reduced dynamic range, GHZ states of a single size fail to improve the achievable clock precision at the optimal dark time compared to unentangled atoms. Towards overcoming this hurdle, we simultaneously prepare a cascade of varying-size GHZ states to perform unambiguous phase estimation over an extended interval. These results demonstrate key building blocks for approaching Heisenberg-limited scaling of optical atomic clock precision.

Abstract:Recently invented and demonstrated, optical lattice clocks hold great promise for improving the precision of modern timekeeping. These clocks aim at the 10^-18 fractional accuracy, which translates into a clock that would neither lose or gain a fraction of a second over an estimated age of the Universe. In these clocks, millions of atoms are trapped and interrogated simultaneously, dramatically improving clock stability. Here we discuss the principles of operation of these clocks and, in particular, a novel concept of "magic" trapping of atoms in optical lattices. We also highlight recently proposed microwave lattice clocks and several applications that employ the optical lattice clocks as a platform for precision measurements and quantum information processing.

Parallel-in-time quantum simulation via Page and Wootters quantum time

Abstract:In the past few decades, researchers have created a veritable zoo of quantum algorithm by drawing inspiration from classical computing, information theory, and even from physical phenomena. Here we present quantum algorithms for parallel-in-time simulations that are inspired by the Page and Wooters formalism. In this framework, and thus in our algorithms, the classical time-variable of quantum mechanics is promoted to the quantum realm by introducing a Hilbert space of "clock" qubits which are then entangled with the "system" qubits. We show that our algorithms can compute temporal properties over $N$ different times of many-body systems by only using $\log(N)$ clock qubits. As such, we achieve an exponential trade-off between time and spatial complexities. In addition, we rigorously prove that the entanglement created between the system qubits and the clock qubits has operational meaning, as it encodes valuable information about the system's dynamics. We also provide a circuit depth estimation of all the protocols, showing an exponential advantage in computation times over traditional sequential in time algorithms. In particular, for the case when the dynamics are determined by the Aubry-Andre model, we present a hybrid method for which our algorithms have a depth that only scales as $\mathcal{O}(\log(N)n)$. As a by product we can relate the previous schemes to the problem of equilibration of an isolated quantum system, thus indicating that our framework enable a new dimension for studying dynamical properties of many-body systems.

Abstract:The control over quantum states in atomic systems has led to the most precise optical atomic clocks to date. Their sensitivity is currently bounded by the standard quantum limit, a fundamental floor set by quantum mechanics for uncorrelated particles, which can nevertheless be overcome when operated with entangled particles. Yet demonstrating a quantum advantage in real world sensors is extremely challenging and remains to be achieved aside from two remarkable examples, LIGO and more recently HAYSTAC. Here we illustrate a pathway for harnessing scalable entanglement in an optical transition using 1D chains of up to 51 ions with state-dependent interactions that decay as a power-law function of the ion separation. We show our sensor can be made to behave as a one-axis-twisting (OAT) model, an iconic fully connected model known to generate scalable squeezing. The collective nature of the state manifests itself in the preservation of the total transverse magnetization, the reduced growth of finite momentum spin-wave excitations, the generation of spin squeezing comparable to OAT (a Wineland parameter of $-3.9 \pm 0.3$ dB for only N = 12 ions) and the development of non-Gaussian states in the form of atomic multi-headed cat states in the Q-distribution. The simplicity of our protocol enables scalability to large arrays with minimal overhead, opening the door to advances in timekeeping as well as new methods for preserving coherence in quantum simulation and computation. We demonstrate this in a Ramsey-type interferometer, where we reduce the measurement uncertainty by $-3.2 \pm 0.5$ dB below the standard quantum limit for N = 51 ions.

Motion-Insensitive Time-Optimal Control of Optical Qubits

Abstract:In trapped-atom quantum computers, high-fidelity control of optical qubits is challenging due to the motion of atoms in the trap. If not corrected, the atom motion gets entangled with the qubit degrees of freedom through two fundamental mechanisms, (i) photon recoil and (ii) thermal motion, both leading to a reduction of the gate fidelity. We develop motion-insensitive pulses that suppress both sources of infidelity by modulating the phase of the driving laser field in time. To eliminate photon recoil, we use bang-bang pulses$-$derived using time-optimal control$-$which shorten the gate duration by about 20 times compared to conventional pulses. However, even when photon recoil is eliminated, we find that the gate error does not vanish, but is rather limited by a bound arising from thermal motion-induced entanglement. Remarkably, this bound is independent of the Rabi frequency, meaning that, unlike for photon recoil, operating in the resolved sideband regime does not mitigate this source of infidelity. To overcome this bound, we derive smooth-phase pulses, which allow for a further reduction of the gate error by more than an order of magnitude for typical thermal atoms. Motion-insensitive pulses can be refined to compensate for laser inhomogeneities, enhancing the gate performance in practical situations. Our results are validated through simulations of one-qubit gates operating on the optical clock transition of ${}^{88}$Sr atoms trapped in an optical tweezers array.

Active Optical Clock Based on Four-Level Quantum System

Abstract:Active optical clock, a new conception of atomic clock, has been proposed recently. In this work, we propose a scheme of active optical clock based on four-level quantum system. The final accuracy and stability of two-level quantum system are limited by second-order Doppler shift of thermal atomic beam. To three-level quantum system, they are mainly limited by light shift of pumping laser field. These limitations can be avoided effectively by applying the scheme proposed here. Rubidium atom four-level quantum system, as a typical example, is discussed. The population inversion between 6S 1/2 and 5P 3/2 states can be built up at a time scale of 10−6 s. With the mechanism of active optical clock, in which the cavity mode linewidth is much wider than that of the laser gain profile, it can output a laser with quantum-limited linewidth narrower than 1 Hz in theory. An experimental configuration is designed to realize this active optical clock.

Abstract:Optical atomic clocks represent the state-of-the-art in the frontier of modern measurement science. In this article we provide a detailed review on the development of optical atomic clocks that are based on trapped single ions and many neutral atoms. We discuss important technical ingredients for optical clocks, and we present measurement precision and systematic uncertainty associated with some of the best clocks to date. We conclude with an outlook on the exciting prospect for clock applications.

Synchronizing clocks via satellites using entangled photons: Effect of relative velocity on precision

Abstract:A satellite-based scheme to perform clock synchronization between ground stations spread across the globe using quantum resources was proposed in [Phys. Rev. A 107, 022615 (2023)], based on the quantum clock synchronization (QCS) protocol developed in [Proc. SPIE 10547 (2018)]. Such a scheme could achieve synchronization up to the picosecond level over distances of thousands of kilometers. Nonetheless, the implementation of this QCS protocol is yet to be demonstrated experimentally in situations where the satellite velocities cannot be neglected, as is the case in many realistic scenarios. In this work, we develop analytical and numerical tools to study the effect of the relative velocity between the satellite and ground stations on the success of the QCS protocol. We conclude that the protocol can still run successfully if the data acquisition window is chosen appropriately. As a demonstration, we simulate the synchronization outcomes for cities across the continental United States using a single satellite in a LEO orbit, low-cost entanglement sources, portable atomic clocks, and avalanche detectors. We conclude that, after including the effect of relative motion, sub-nanosecond to picosecond level precision can still be achieved over distance scales of $\approx 4000$ kms. Such high precision synchronization is currently not achievable over long distances ($\gtrsim 100 km$) with standard classical techniques including the GPS. The simulation tools developed in this work are in principle applicable to other means of synchronizing clocks using entangled photons, which are expected to form the basis of future quantum networks like the Quantum Internet, distributed quantum sensing and Quantum GPS.
