Abstract:We consider Sinai's random walk in random environment. We prove that the logarithm of the local time is a good estimator of the random potential associated to the random environment. We give a constructive method allowing us to built the random environment from a single trajectory of the random walk.

Our method relies on the connection between Sinai's walk and branching processes with immigration in a random environment, and the analysis on some important quantities of these branching processes such as extinction time, maximum population, and total population.

Abstract:Sinai's model of diffusion in one dimension with random local bias is studied by a real space renormalization group, which yields exact results at long times. The effects of an additional small uniform bias force are also studied. We obtain analytically the scaling form of the distribution of the position x(t) of a particle, the probability of it not returning to the origin, and the distributions of first passage times, in an infinite sample as well as in the presence of a boundary and in a finite but large sample. We compute the distribution of the meeting time of two particles in the same environment. We also obtain a detailed analytic description of the thermally averaged trajectories by computing quantities such as the joint distribution of the number of returns and of the number of jumps forward. These quantities obey multifractal scaling, characterized by generalized persistence exponents theta(g) which we compute. In the presence of a small bias, the number of returns to the origin becomes finite, characterized by a universal scaling function which we obtain. The full statistics of the distribution of successive times of return of thermally averaged trajectories is obtained, as well as detailed analytical information about correlations between directions and times of successive jumps. The two-time distribution of the positions of a particle, x(t) and x(t') with t>t', is also computed exactly. It is found to exhibit "aging" with several time regimes characterized by different behaviors. In the unbiased case, for t-t' approximately t'alpha with alpha>1, it exhibits a ln t/ln t' scaling, with a singularity at coinciding rescaled positions x(t)=x(t'). This singularity is a novel feature, and corresponds to particles that remain in a renormalized valley. For closer times alpha<1, the two-time diffusion front exhibits a quasiequilibrium regime with a ln(t-t')/ln t' behavior which we compute. The crossover to a t/t' aging form in the presence of a small bias is also obtained analytically. Rare events corresponding to intermittent splitting of the thermal packet between separated wells which dominate some averaged observables are also characterized in detail. Connections with the Green function of a one-dimensional Schrödinger problem and quantum spin chains are discussed.

Abstract:It is known that a properly rescaled version of Sinai's random walk converges in distribution to Brox's diffusion. In this article we quantify this convergence by considering a specific coupling between Sinai's walk and Brox's diffusion. Our method relies on convergence results for martingale problems considered in the rough path setting.

Abstract:We study properties of a random walk in a generalized Sinai model, in which a quenched random potential is a trajectory of a fractional Brownian motion with arbitrary Hurst parameter H, 0< H <1, so that the random force field displays strong spatial correlations. In this case, the disorder-average mean-square displacement grows in proportion to log^{2/H}(n), n being time. We prove that moments of arbitrary order k of the steady-state current J_L through a finite segment of length L of such a chain decay as L^{-(1-H)}, independently of k, which suggests that despite a logarithmic confinement the average current is much higher than its Fickian counterpart in homogeneous systems. Our results reveal a paradoxical behavior such that, for fixed n and L, the mean square displacement decreases when one varies H from 0 to 1, while the average current increases. This counter-intuitive behavior is explained via an analysis of representative realizations of disorder.

Abstract:We present a procedure that determines the law of a random walk in an iid random environment as a function of a single “typical” trajectory. We indicate when the trajectory characterizes the law of the environment, and we say how this law can be determined. We then show how independent trajectories having the distribution of the original walk can be generated as functions of the single observed trajectory.

Abstract:The territory explored by a random walk is a key property that may be quantified by the number of distinct sites that the random walk visits up to a given time. The extent of this spatial exploration characterizes many important physical, chemical, and ecological phenomena. In spite of its fundamental interest and wide utility, the number of visited sites gives only an incomplete picture of this exploration. In this work, we introduce a more fundamental quantity, the elapsed time $\tau_n$ between visits to the $n^{\rm th}$ and the $(n+1)^{\rm st}$ distinct sites, from which the full dynamics about the visitation statistics can be obtained. To determine the distribution of these inter-visit times $\tau_n$, we develop a theoretical approach that relies on a mapping with a trapping problem, in which, in contrast to previously studied situations, the spatial distribution of traps is continuously updated by the random walk itself. Despite the geometrical complexity of the territory explored by a random walk (typically aspherical, as well as containing holes and islands at all scales), we find that the distribution of the $\tau_n$ can be accounted for by simple analytical expressions. Processes as varied as regular diffusion, anomalous diffusion, and diffusion in disordered media and fractals, fall into the same universality classes for the temporal history of distinct sites visited. We confirm our theoretical predictions by Monte Carlo and exact enumeration methods. We also determine additional basic exploration observables, such as the perimeter of the visited domain or the number of islands of unvisited sites enclosed within this domain, thereby illustrating the generality of our approach. Because of their fundamental character and their universality, these inter-visit times represent a promising tool to unravel many more aspects of the exploration dynamics of random walks.

Abstract:We consider a quantized version of the Sinai-Derrida model for "random walk in random environment". The model is defined in terms of a Lindblad master equation. For a ring geometry (a chain with periodic boundary condition) it features a delocalization-transition as the bias in increased beyond a critical value, indicating that the relaxation becomes under-damped. Counter intuitively, the effective disorder is enhanced due to coherent hopping. We analyze in detail this enhancement and its dependence on the model parameters. The non-monotonic dependence of the Lindbladian spectrum on the rate of the coherent transitions is highlighted.

Abstract:We develop a comprehensive framework for analyzing full-record statistics, covering record counts M(t1),M(t2),... , their corresponding attainment times TM(t1),TM(t2),... , and the intervals until the next record. From this multiple-time distribution, we derive general expressions for various observables related to record dynamics, including the conditional number of records given the number observed at a previous time and the conditional time required to reach the current record given the occurrence time of the previous one. Abstract:We consider random walks in dynamic random environments and propose a criterion which, if satisfied, allows to decompose the random walk trajectory into i.i.d. increments, and ultimately to prove limit theorems. The criterion involves the construction of a random field built from the environment, that has to satisfy a certain random Markov property along with some mixing estimates. We apply this criterion to correlated environments such as Boolean percolation and renewal chains featuring polynomial decay of correlations.

Abstract:Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:We study the Sinai model for the diffusion of a particle in a one dimension random potential in presence of a small concentration $\rho$ of perfect absorbers using the asymptotically exact real space renormalization method. We compute the survival probability, the averaged diffusion front and return probability, the two particle meeting probability, the distribution of total distance traveled before absorption and the averaged Green's function of the associated Schrodinger operator. Our work confirms some recent results of Texier and Hagendorf obtained by Dyson-Schmidt methods, and extends them to other observables and in presence of a drift. In particular the power law density of states is found to hold in all cases. Irrespective of the drift, the asymptotic rescaled diffusion front of surviving particles is found to be a symmetric step distribution, uniform for $|x| < {1/2} \xi(t)$, where $\xi(t)$ is a new, survival length scale ($\xi(t)=T \ln t/\sqrt{\rho}$ in the absence of drift). Survival outside this sharp region is found to decay with a larger exponent, continuously varying with the rescaled distance $x/\xi(t)$. A simple physical picture based on a saddle point is given, and universality is discussed.

Statistical mechanics of a single particle in a multiscale random potential: Parisi landscapes in finite dimensional Euclidean spaces

Abstract:We construct a N-dimensional Gaussian landscape with multiscale, translation invariant, logarithmic correlations and investigate the statistical mechanics of a single particle in this environment. In the limit of high dimension N>>1 the free energy of the system and overlap function are calculated exactly using the replica trick and Parisi's hierarchical ansatz. In the thermodynamic limit, we recover the most general version of the Derrida's Generalized Random Energy Model (GREM). The low-temperature behaviour depends essentially on the spectrum of length scales involved in the construction of the landscape. If the latter consists of K discrete values, the system is characterized by a K-step Replica Symmetry Breaking solution. We argue that our construction is in fact valid in any finite spatial dimensions $N\ge 1$. We discuss implications of our results for the singularity spectrum describing multifractality of the associated Boltzmann-Gibbs measure. Finally we discuss several generalisations and open problems, the dynamics in such a landscape and the construction of a Generalized Multifractal Random Walk.

On favourite sites of a random walk in moderately sparse random environment

Abstract:We study the favourite sites of a random walk evolving in a sparse random environment on the set of integers. The walker moves symmetrically apart from some randomly chosen sites where we impose random drift. We prove annealed limit theorems for the time the walk spends in its favourite sites in two cases. The first one, in which it is the distribution of the drift that determines the limiting behaviour of the walk, is a generalization of known results for a random walk in i.i.d. random environment. In the second case a new behaviour appears, caused by the sparsity of the environment.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, a localisation result is proved for the biased random walk on the range of a simple random walk in high dimensions ( $$d\ge 5$$ ). This demonstrates that, unlike in the supercritical percolation setting, a slowdown effect occurs as soon as a non-trivial bias is introduced. The proof applies a decomposition of the underlying simple random walk path at its cut-times to relate the associated biased random walk to a one-dimensional random walk in a random environment in Sinai’s regime. Via this approach, a corresponding aging result is also proved.

Abstract:We perform a thorough analysis of the survival probability of symmetric random walks with stochastic resetting, defined as the probability for the walker not to cross the origin up to time $n$. For continuous symmetric distributions of step lengths with either finite (random walks) or infinite variance (L\'evy flights), this probability can be expressed in terms of the survival probability of the walk without resetting, given by Sparre Andersen theory. It is therefore universal, i.e., independent of the step length distribution. We analyze this survival probability at depth, deriving both exact results at finite times and asymptotic late-time results. We also investigate the case where the step length distribution is symmetric but not continuous, focussing our attention onto arithmetic distributions generating random walks on the lattice of integers. We investigate in detail the example of the simple Polya walk and propose an algebraic approach for lattice walks with a larger range.
