Abstract:Summary In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in the negative consequences for therapists of working with trauma victims. In that context, burnout is a major concept used in the literature. One of the main questions examined in the literature relates to the factors that contribute to burnout. This question is particularly relevant to therapists working with trauma victims, but has hardly been examined among that population. To fill this gap, the present study sought to examine burnout among therapists working with trauma victims. In addition, we examined the contribution of the therapists’ background characteristics as well as the contribution of their personal resources (mastery, self-esteem, and role competence), and environmental resources (social and colleagues support). The study was conducted among a sample of 214 social workers who work with trauma victims at social services in Israel. Findings The research findings indicate that the participants’ levels of burnout were average. In addition, the therapist’s age, past exposure to trauma, self-esteem, and mastery, as well as influence (as a component of role competence) contributed significantly to burnout. Applications The study sheds light on the negative consequences of therapeutic work for therapists, and on the factors that lead to those consequences. The findings indicate that the impact of the therapists’ personal resources was more significant than that of environmental resources.

Abstract:Objective: Clinical psychologists, as professionals, come across various people and their problems frequently. Regular exposure to information which are distressing, stressful, and sometimes traumatic can create health issues and burnout, which is a psychological syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, in them. A number of psychological variables can contribute to the burnout of clinical psychologists. The ones taken in this study are personality, empathy, countertransference (CT) and compassion fatigue. The study had been conceptualized to find the relation and contribution of the mentioned variables on burnout of clinical psychologists. Methods: Fifty one clinical psychologists participated in the study. Maslach Burnout Inventory, NEO Five-Factor Inventory, Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy, Assessment of CT Scale and Compassion fatigue (CF), and satisfaction self-test for helpers were used for assessing the constructs. Relevant statistical analysis were performed. Results: Findings show that there are significant correlations between personality variables, i.e., neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness with other variables, i.e., compassion fatigue, empathy, and CT. Some of the personality variables are correlated to burnout. Empathy, CT, and CF contribute significantly to burnout. Conclusion: The study shows the probable indicators which can cause burnout in clinical psychologists, and which, if correctly addressed, may help in the maintenance of sound mental health among professionals.
Burnout amongst clinical and counselling psychologist: The role of early maladaptive schemas and coping modes as vulnerability factors

Abstract:Psychologists are subject to multiple competing emotional demands that increase the risk of burnout. Research has demonstrated that burnout arises from both organizational and personal factors, including psychologists' personal beliefs and coping. Preliminary research indicates that early maladaptive schemas (EMS) are associated with high burnout, yet, to date, the role of EMS and associated coping responses (maladaptive coping modes [MCM]) in predicting high burnout amongst psychologists has not been investigated. Four hundred forty-three psychologists completed a self-report online questionnaire comprising the Maslach Burnout Inventory-emotional exhaustion scale (EE), Young Schema Questionnaire, and Schema Mode Inventory. The two most common EMS amongst psychologists were unrelenting standards and self-sacrifice. There was substantial indication of burnout, with 18.3% in the high range and 29.6% in the moderate range of EE. The most common MCM were detached protector and detached self-soother. Controlling for demographics and job demands, EMS accounted for an additional 18% variance in EE. MCM accounted for an additional 6% beyond the variance explained by demographics, job demands, and EMS. Practical recommendations are suggested to reduce psychologist burnout.
Predictors of job burnout among fieldwork supervisors of social work students

Abstract:Summary In the helping professions, professional burnout is widely acknowledged to play a key role in work retention and turnover. However, although the literature on fieldwork education in social work engages with the importance of continuity and commitment regarding the role of fieldwork supervisor, the effects of job burnout are under-researched. Furthermore, there is also a gap in the literature with respect to the internal factors that contextualize burnout and retention among fieldwork supervisors. Against this background, the objective of the present study was to examine the factors that predict professional burnout among fieldwork supervisors in Israel. Questionnaires measuring burnout, as well as several internal explanatory factors for burnout—career identity, work significance, and personality traits—were used. Findings The findings of the study indicated that career identity, together with the personality characteristics of agreeableness and consciousness predict burnout negatively, while neuroticism positively predicts burnout. Applications The article discusses these findings in light of resource conservation and existential theories of burnout, as well as the potential implications for practice and policy.

Abstract:Burnout is a prolonged response to chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors on the job, and is defined by the three dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. The past 25 years of research has established the complexity of the construct, and places the individual stress experience within a larger organizational context of people's relation to their work. Recently, the work on burnout has expanded internationally and has led to new conceptual models. The focus on engagement, the positive antithesis of burnout, promises to yield new perspectives on interventions to alleviate burnout. The social focus of burnout, the solid research basis concerning the syndrome, and its specific ties to the work domain make a distinct and valuable contribution to people's health and well-being.

Abstract:Objective Psychosocial oncology specialists in academic medical centers are at risk for burnout as they deliver a wide range of clinical, research, educational, and administrative services in high demand work environments. No national productivity benchmarks exist for this specialty. This study examines factors contributing to burnout among academic psychosocial oncology psychologists (PSOP), presents viable productivity standards, and a sustainable care model to mitigate burnout. Methods Psychosocial oncology specialists recruited from the American Psychosocial Oncology Society membership were surveyed to determine frequency of burnout as measured by the Mini Z, professional fulfillment via the Stanford Professional Fulfillment Index, as well as demographic, clinical practice, and systems predictors of burnout. We examine salary discrepancies by gender and race. We focus on psychologists providing services in academic medical centers. Results Burnout was reported by 37%–44% of psychologists and was associated with high clinical volumes, mid‐career status, and less than 10% administrative time. There were no differences in burnout by gender or race. However, females earned significantly less than men at each academic rank. Conclusions PSOP report high levels of burnout consistent with other oncology professionals. Critical predictors include patient volume and lack of administrative time. Mid‐career providers are more vulnerable to burnout, suggesting an inflection point at which individuals may be more likely to leave the field. We recommend a benchmark for clinical volume and sufficient administrative time to support the tripartite mission (education, research, patient care) and quadruple aim (patient experience, population health, cost, worker well‐being) of academic medical centers.

Abstract:The emotional exhaustion component of burnout is concerningly prevalent in psychologists providing psychotherapy. Emotional labor is a known contributor to burnout through the pathway of emotional dissonance and is beginning to develop attention in psychologist wellbeing literature. Although the relationship between emotional dissonance and emotional exhaustion in psychologists has been observed previously, constructs within an individual's locus of control that affect this relationship are not known. We attempted to explore possible variables that may affect emotional dissonance's relationship with emotional exhaustion in psychologists to identify possible factors amenable to future interventions aimed at improving psychologist wellbeing. Specifically, we examined how self-compassion, psychological flexibility, and career experience may affect the relationship between emotional dissonance and emotional exhaustion. We conducted a path analysis on data gathered from 454 psychologists recruited internationally. Results indicated that self-compassion may affect burnout indirectly through the mechanism of emotional dissonance. Additionally, results suggest that psychological flexibility may exert a conditional effect on the relationship between emotional dissonance and emotional exhaustion such that higher rates of psychological flexibility may weaken this relationship. We found no evidence to support career experience's hypothesized conditional effects. Our findings provide the first examination of these constructs in this occupational group and support the potential role of self-compassion and psychological flexibility in assisting psychologists to improve their wellbeing.

Abstract:The healthcare industry is the largest and fastest growing industry in the world; however, being a part of the healthcare system involves being at an increased risk of experiencing mental health problems, loneliness, stress, and increased susceptibility to experiencing compassion fatigue related to the emotional wear associated with providing patient-centered care. Healthcare workers include, but are not limited, to physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and psychologists. Often, healthcare workers place the needs and wellbeing of patients before their own. This article aims to highlight the occupational hazards of working in the healthcare field, the physical and emotional isolation associated with clinical practice, managing distressing behaviors by patients, and reviewing the systemic barriers influencing the development and management of moral distress. We further aim to bring attention to the need for healthcare professionals to place self-care at the forefront of their therapeutic repertoire through various individualized strategies, through the importance of building moral resilience, and the shift towards improving workplace spirituality. Practicing self-care can address the consequences of neglecting one’s own wellbeing, positively impact the ability to provide better quality patient care, and benefits relationships with patients, loved ones, and of most importantly with oneself.

Abstract:Background: Burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and high turnover rates among child mental health clinicians are a challenge, not only for the individual therapist and the organization but also for the successful implementation of evidence-based practices. However, little is known about which and how job-and implementation-related factors are associated with burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and turnover intention as well as compassion satisfaction among child therapists. In the present study, we aimed to explore these factors and related mechanisms by integrating the "professional quality of life" and the "job demands-resources" models of occupational health. Methods: We measured the perceived professional quality of life and turnover intention among a national sample of 256 therapists working in Norwegian Child and Adolescence Mental Health Clinics ( n = 44) that implemented Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT). Seventeen Job-and implementation-related resources and demands were also measured using the General Nordic Questionnaire for Psychological and Social Factors at Work and the Implementation Component Questionnaire. Path analysis was used to test whether burnout and compassion satisfaction mediate the relationship between job demands and resources on one hand, and secondary traumatic stress and turnover intention on the other hand. Results and discussion: Results revealed that two job resources, i.e., positive challenges at work and mastery of work, were significant predictors of all professional outcomes. The proposed model was only partly supported. That is, while burnout did mediate the relationship between some job demands (i.e., work-family interference and role conflict) and job resources (i.e., human resource primacy, positive challenges, and mastery of work) with secondary traumatic stress and turnover intention, compassion satisfaction did not mediate the relationship between job resources and turnover intention. Moreover, in addition to their indirect effects via burnout, role conflict and organizational climate (human resource primacy) also directly affected turnover intention. These findings propose that interventions that reduce burnout should be prioritized to improve the professional quality of life and turnover intention among child therapists. Theoretically, it seems that compassion satisfaction and work engagement act differently.

Abstract:Health care workers (n = 71) completed an online survey or participated in one of five focus groups. Clinical cutoff scores revealed concerning levels of depression (16%), anxiety, and burnout (49%). Qualitative responses (n = 172) yielded two themes: work environment and well-being. Addressing burnout requires an ecological systems mindset, which accounts for complex stressors present in individual providers’ lives (large-scale disasters and personal stressors), agency-level factors (scheduling and workload), and larger social and contextual administrative factors (allocating time for self-care through scheduling and billing codes). A Qualitative Analysis of Job Burnout in Eating Disorder Treatment Providers

Abstract:Although job burnout is common in mental health care settings, almost no research has examined burnout in eating disorder treatment providers. Using qualitative methodology, this study examined a) perceived contributors of burnout, b) efforts to manage burnout, and c) recommendations for avoiding burnout in a sample of professional eating disorder treatment providers. Recruited via professional organizations, 298 participants completed an online questionnaire designed by the authors. Qualitative responses were coded and grouped into themes. Results indicated that almost all participants worried about their patients' health, which frequently resulted in negative affect (e.g., anxiety, sadness). The most frequently cited contributors to burnout were common characteristics of eating pathology (e.g., chronicity, relapse, symptom severity); patient characteristics (e.g., personality conflict); work-related factors (e.g., time demands); and, financial issues (e.g., inadequate compensation). To avoid burnout, over 90% of participants engaged in self-care behaviors (e.g., exercise, social support). Early-career practitioners were encouraged to utilize supervision, create a work/life balance, engage in self-care, and limit caseloads. These results suggest that supervision and training of eating disorder treatment providers should include burnout management.

Abstract:The value of people in their various dimensions is a priority in the postmodern era. In this respect, programs are being implemented for disadvantaged social categories to compensate for differences, reduce discrepancies, and integrate marginalized people into society. This, however, is not easy, and the work of professionals with people in difficulty is frequently difficult, consuming multiple resources and, sometimes, leading to burnout. The professions involved in the recovery work of people in difficulty provide social, medical, psychological, and spiritual assistance services in order to restore or increase the well-being of disadvantaged people or social groups. This study presents an analysis of burnout among social workers and clerics and the effect of supervision on burnout. In support of this, a sociological survey (n = 502) was conducted on a convenience sample of Romanian social workers and clerics in June 2018. The main conclusion of the study is that supervising professionals working with people in difficulty significantly reduces the risk of burnout.

Abstract:Background: Provider burnout is a critical problem in mental health services. Contributing factors have been explicated across three domains: personal, job and organizational characteristics. Of these, organizational characteristics, including workplace environment, appear to be particularly important given that most interventions addressing burnout via the other domains (e.g. bolstering personal coping skills) have been modestly effective at best. Aims: This study builds on previous research by using social capital as a framework for the experience of work social milieu, and aims to provide a richer understanding of how workplace social environment might impact burnout and help create more effective ways to reduce burnout. Methods: Providers (n = 40) taking part in a larger burnout intervention study were randomly selected to take part in interviews regarding their workplace environment and burnout. Participant responses were analyzed thematically. Results: Workplace social milieu revolved around two primary themes: workplace social capital in provider burnout and the protective qualities of social capital in cohesive work teams that appear to mitigate burnout. Conclusions: These results imply that work environments where managers support collaboration and social interaction among work teams may reduce burnout.

Abstract:The current study addressed the role that perfectionism plays among professionals in this field of marriage and family therapy (MFT). Specifically, this study provides information about PS (personal standards) perfectionism and EC (evaluative concerns) and their relationship with both compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. The sample included 247 marriage and family therapists who answered demographic questions along with completing the professional quality of life scale (ProQOL; as reported by Stamm, B. H. (2009). Professional Quality of Life: Compassion Satisfaction and Fatigue Version 5 (ProQOL). Retrieved from http://www.proqol.org/ProQol_Test.html; Stamm in The concise ProQOL manual, ProQOL.org, 2010;) and the multidimensional perfectionism scale (MPS; Hewitt and Flett, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 60:456–470, 1991). Results indicated three significant findings: (1) higher levels of both self-oriented and socially oriented perfectionism are correlated with higher levels of both burnout and secondary traumatic stress; (2) as years of work as an MFT increase, level of burnout decreases; and (3) women demonstrated statistically significantly higher scores in PS perfectionism than men. Limitations, implications, and future directions are discussed.
The Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Concern for Others, and Parental Burnout in Child’s Chronic Care Management

Abstract:ObjectivesParental burnout is a construct that reflects the exhaustion and emotional distancing of parents from their children due to the growing demands of caring for them. Research has pointed to a heightened risk for parental burnout among parents of children with special needs. Additional research has indicated that parents' personality traits and relational dynamics serve as resiliency factors regarding parental burnout.MethodsIn the present study, 91 primary parental caregivers of children receiving ongoing treatment at a pediatric ambulatory care unit were recruited. A theoretical model proposing the specific ways in which self-compassion and concern for others complement each other in predicting parental burnout was examined. In this model, the relationships between self-compassion, concern for others, and burnout respectively are mediated by different basic psychological needs, detailed in self-determination theory. Participants completed various questionnaires measuring these constructs. Regression and mediation analyses were used to examine our hypotheses.ResultsResults indicated that self-compassion and concern for others predicted levels of parental burnout. The covariance between concern for others and burnout was mediated by the psychological need of relatedness.ConclusionsThe findings support the extension of a three-layered conceptual model of (a) self-compassion and concern for others, (b) psychological needs, and (c) burnout. The present study highlights self-compassion and concern for others as potential resilience factors regarding the risk of burnout in parental caregiving. These findings point to promising avenues for burnout prevention and preemptive facilitation of parental caregiving.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Recovery from a severe burn injury requires early and aggressive therapy, which is often painful and distressing to the patient. Burn therapists who guide these interventions may be prone to experiencing secondary trauma and compassion fatigue through repeated exposure to difficult situations. At the same time, therapists may gain a sense of purpose and altruism from their work, fostering compassion satisfaction. Despite being well documented in other health professions, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction have not been sufficiently explored among burn therapists. The purpose of this study was to quantify and characterize burn therapist’s compassion fatigue and satisfaction using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale and to answer the question of what job-related factors may impact these outcomes. Methods This cross-sectional study surveyed active burn therapists using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). ProQOL scores were calculated for individual respondents and described for the sample using mean, standard deviation, and range. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to assess the impact of predictor variables of years in burn care, practice setting, and population on the subscales of the ProQOL for compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue (burnout and secondary traumatic stress). Results A total of 143 burn therapists were included, which exceeded the n needed to achieve statistical power. The included participants presented with low to moderate burnout scores (mean=23.5, range=11-38), secondary traumatic stress (22.5, 11-40), and moderate to high compassion satisfaction (40.4, 25-50). Regression analyses found years of practice significantly predicted (p ≤ .01) each of the compassion constructs. Conclusions This study presents new knowledge for the field of burn care in its quantification of professional quality of life in burn therapists. While burn therapists experience moderate-to-high levels of compassion satisfaction in their work, burnout and stress also approached moderate levels. Years of practice was a significant predictor of compassion and may be related to increased competence or confidence in practice. Applicability of Research to Practice This study is the first to study compassion fatigue and satisfaction in burn therapists. Understanding and addressing these issues are essential to recruiting and retaining a healthy and productive burn care workforce. Regular assessment of professional quality of life and career stage-specific supportive measures could provide a protective measure against compassion fatigue.

Abstract:Helping professionals are givers by vocation, and this generous trait is abundantly displayed by their commitment and determination to support others. Caring for others is their central business, which many times, in the absence of a solid training and various types of professional support, might affect their capacity to regroup and heal. This article addresses the most common sources of stress and burnout for helping professionals, with a special focus on counselors. Concepts like compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress are explored. The current pandemic is adding to those common stressors, making us consider the helping services from a different perspective. COVID Stress Syndrome is presented and potential implications for caregivers’ work are discussed. Special consideration is given to the counseling occupation in Romania.
Investigating daily abusive supervision as antecedent of subordinates' low psychological detachment and relaxation during nonwork time: A diary study.

Abstract:Recovery from work is highly relevant for employees, yet understanding the interpersonal antecedents of impaired recovery experiences remains unclear. Specifically, because former research neglected supervisor behaviors as a predictor of impaired recovery and abusive supervision is a core stressor, we examine daily abusive supervision as a predictor of subordinates' recovery experiences (i.e., psychological detachment and relaxation). We draw on research on the recovery paradox and propose that psychological detachment and relaxation will be impaired on days with high abusive supervision, although recovery would have been highly important on those days. We suggest a cognitive mechanism (via rumination) and an affective mechanism (via anger) to explain this paradox. We test coworker reappraisal support as a moderator that buffers the adverse effects of abusive supervision on rumination and anger. In a daily diary study (171 subordinates, 786 days), we found an indirect effect of abusive supervision on psychological detachment via rumination and indirect effects of abusive supervision on psychological detachment and relaxation via anger. Coworker reappraisal support moderated the association of abusive supervision and rumination, such that the relationship was weaker when coworker support was high. Our results suggest that including negative supervisor behaviors, such as abusive supervision, in recovery research is highly relevant. Abstract:Previous research has highlighted that factors such as large workload, role ambiguity, lack of support from colleagues, and challenging behaviour are associated with higher levels of burnout within the disability support worker (DSW) population. The aim of this research was to investigate which factors contribute the most to the prediction of the three facets of burnout--feeling exhausted and overextended by one's work (emotional exhaustion), detached and callous responses towards work (depersonalisation) and a lack of achievement and productivity within one's role (personal accomplishment). The factors chosen for analysis within this research were analysed within four categories linked to theories of burnout development (individual, interpersonal, organisational and demographic). A sample of 108 DSWs completed a questionnaire booklet that contained standardised measures of burnout and job stressors related to disability work. Results highlighted the importance of predictors such as challenging behaviour (interpersonal), workload (individual), supervisor support (individual), work-home conflict (individual), job feedback (individual), role ambiguity (organisational), low job status (organisational), role conflict (organisational), gender (demographic) and work hours (demographic) when predicting one or more of the facets of burnout. In conclusion, disability services and organisations may benefit from focusing on remodelling their staff-related organisational practices in order to prevent the development of burnout in their DSWs (e.g., increase supervision and support practices).

Abstract:Burnout occurs in occupations, such as nursing, where a significant proportion of time is spent in close involvement with other people. Mental health nursing has been considered an area that is subjected to high levels of burnout. Burnout in mental health nursing affects both individuals and organizations. The purposes of this study were to measure the levels of burnout and identify the correlates of burnout among Jordanian mental health nurses. A descriptive correlational design was used to collect data from mental health nurses using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, Social Support Scale, Job Satisfaction Scale, and demographic and work-related variables through a self-reported questionnaire. The sample consisted of 181 mental health nurses recruited from all mental health settings in Jordan. Jordanian mental health nurses showed high levels of emotional exhaustion and moderate levels of depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Scores of job satisfaction and social support were slightly higher than the midrange. Significant correlations were found among burnout categories, job satisfaction, social support, and demographic and work-related variables. Predictor variables accounted for 32.7% of emotional exhaustion, 27.7% of depersonalization, and 16.8% of personal accomplishment. Results revealed that a comprehensive interventional approach aimed at minimizing the risk of burnout among mental health nurses is needed. Such an approach should involve interventions at both individual and organizational levels.
