Abstract:The latest discovery of ferromagnetism in atomically thin films of semiconductors Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ and CrI$_3$ has unleashed numerous opportunities for fundamental physics of magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) limit and also for technological applications based on 2D magnetic materials. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of the magnetic, electronic, optical and magneto-optical(MO) properties of multilayers [monolayer(ML), bilayer and trilayer] and bulk CrI$_3$, based on the density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation plus on-site Coulomb repulsion scheme. Interestingly, all the structures are found to be single-spin ferromagnetic(FM) semiconductors. They all have a large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy energy(MAE) of $\sim$0.5 meV/Cr. These large MAEs suppress transverse spin fluctuations and thus stabilize long-range magnetic orders at finite temperatures down to the ML limit. They also exhibit strong MO effects with their Kerr and Faraday rotation angles being comparable to that of best-known bulk MO materials. The shape and position of the main features in the optical and MO spectra are found to be nearly thickness-independent although the magnitude of Kerr rotation angles increases monotonically with the film thickness. Magnetic transition temperatures estimated based on calculated exchange coupling parameters, calculated optical conductivity, MO Kerr and Faraday rotation angles agree quite well with available experimental data. The calculated MAE as well as optical and MO properties are analyzed in terms of the calculated orbital-decomposed densities of states, band state symmetries and dipole selection rules. Our findings of large out-of-plane MAEs and strong MO effects in these single-spin FM semiconducting CrI$_3$ ultrathin films suggest that they will find valuable applications in semiconductor MO and spintronic nanodevices.

Abstract:The discovery of 2-dimensional (2D) materials, such as CrI3, that retain magnetic ordering at monolayer thickness has resulted in a surge of both pure and applied research in 2D magnetism. Here, we report a magneto-Raman spectroscopy study on multilayered CrI3, focusing on two additional features in the spectra that appear below the magnetic ordering temperature and were previously assigned to high frequency magnons. Instead, we conclude these modes are actually zone-folded phonons. We observe a striking evolution of the Raman spectra with increasing magnetic field applied perpendicular to the atomic layers in which clear, sudden changes in intensities of the modes are attributed to the interlayer ordering changing from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic at a critical magnetic field. Our work highlights the sensitivity of the Raman modes to weak interlayer spin ordering in CrI3.

Abstract:Two-dimensional CrI3 has attracted much attention as it is reported to be a ferromagnetic semiconductor with a Curie temperature of around 45 K. By performing first-principles calculations, we find that the magnetic ground state of CrI3 is variable under biaxial strain. Our theoretical investigations show that the ground state of monolayer CrI3 is ferromagnetic under compression, but becomes antiferromagnetic under tension. Particularly, the transition occurs under a feasible in-plane strain of around 1.8%. Accompanied by the transition of the magnetic ground state, CrI3 undergoes a transition from magnetic-metal to half-metal to half-semiconductor to spin-relevant semiconductor when the strain varies from similar to 15% to 10%. We attribute these transitions to the variation of the d-orbitals of Cr atoms and the p-orbitals of I atoms. Generally, we report a series of magnetic and electronic phase transitions in strained CrI3, which will help both theoretical and experimental researchers in further understanding the tunable electronic and magnetic properties of CrI3 and its analogs.

Abstract:Abstract The discovery of two-dimensional systems hosting intrinsic magnetic order represents a seminal addition to the rich landscape of van der Waals materials. CrI 3 is an archetypal example, where the interdependence of structure and magnetism, along with strong light-matter interactions, provides a new platform to explore the optical control of magnetic and vibrational degrees of freedom at the nanoscale. However, the nature of magneto-structural coupling on its intrinsic ultrafast timescale remains a crucial open question. Here, we probe magnetic and vibrational dynamics in bulk CrI 3 using ultrafast optical spectroscopy, revealing spin-flip scattering-driven demagnetization and strong transient exchange-mediated interactions between lattice vibrations and spin oscillations. The latter yields a coherent spin-coupled phonon mode that is highly sensitive to the driving pulse’s helicity in the magnetically ordered phase. Our results elucidate the nature of ultrafast spin-lattice coupling in CrI 3 and highlight its potential for applications requiring high-speed control of magnetism at the nanoscale.

Here we demonstrate that the Raman polarization selection rules of optical phonons can be greatly modified by the magnetic ordering in 2D magnet CrI$_3$. For monolayer samples, the dominant A$\rm_{1g}$ peak shows abnormally high intensity in the cross polarization channel at low temperature, which is forbidden by the selection rule based on the lattice symmetry. While for bilayer, this peak is absent in the cross polarization channel for the layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and reappears when it is tuned to the ferromagnetic (FM) state by an external magnetic field. Our findings shed light on exploring the emergent magneto-optical effects in 2D magnets.

Abstract:The recent emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic long-range magnetic order opens the avenue of fundamental physics studies and the spintronics application; however, the mechanism of interlayer magnetic coupling and the feasible way to control magnetic states are yet to be fully investigated. In the present study, from first-principle calculations, we studied the interlayer magnetic coupling of 2D CrI3/CrGeTe3 heterostructures and revealed the stacking-dependent magnetic states. It is found that AB and AB(1) stacking are prefer ferromagnetic interlayer coupling, while the other two stacked configurations are in the ferrimagnetic state. The underlying mechanism has contributed to the competition between nearest-neighbor (NN) and second-nearest-neighbor (SNN) Cr-Cr atoms interaction between layers. Meanwhile, it is also found that the electronic properties are stacking dependent, while the band edge states are separated to the different layers. The magnetic and electronic states can be effectively tuned by the external strain. Based on these findings, the magnetic domain devices are proposed in the twisted magnetic heterostructures with the domain size and interlayer coupling being controlled by the rotation angle. Our study thus provides an approach to achieve the controllable magnetic/electronic properties which is not only important for fundamental research but also useful for the practical applications in spintronics.

Abstract:Materials with a quasi-one-dimensional stripy magnetic order often exhibit low crystal and magnetic symmetries, thus allowing the presence of various energy coupling terms and giving rise to macroscopic interplay between spin, charge, and phonon. In this work, we performed optical, electrical and magnetic characterizations combined with first-principles calculations on a van der Waals antiferromagnetic insulator chromium oxychloride (CrOCl). We detected the subtle phase transition behaviors of exfoliated CrOCl under varying temperature and magnetic field and clarified its controversial spin structures. We found that the antiferromagnetism and its air stability persist down to few-layer samples, making it a promising candidate for future 2D spintronic devices. Additionally, we verified the magnetoelastic coupling effect in CrOCl, allowing for the potential manipulation of the magnetic states via electric field or strain. These virtues of CrOCl provide us with an ideal platform for fundamental research on spin-charge, spin-phonon coupling, and spin-interactions.

Tunable Spin States in the Two-Dimensional Magnet CrI3

Abstract:The recent discovery of ferromagnetic single-layer CrI3 creates ample opportunities for studying the fundamental properties and the spintronic applications of atomically thin magnets. Through first-principles calculations and model Hamiltonian simulations, here we build for the first time a substantial magnetic phase diagram under lateral strain and charge doping, the two factors that are easily modulated in single-layer CrI3via substrate and gating controls. We demonstrate that both lateral strain and charge doping efficiently change the coupling between the local spins and thus have unexpected effects on the magnetic properties of CrI3. In particular, the strain tunes the magnetic order and anisotropy: a compressive strain leads to a phase transition from a ferromagnetic insulator to an antiferromagnetic insulator, while a tensile strain can flip the magnetic orientation from off-plane to in-plane. Furthermore, we find that the phase transition under compressive strain is insensitive to charge doping, whereas the phase transition under tensile strain is modulated by electron doping significantly. Our predicted magnetic phase diagram and rationalized analysis indicate the single-layer CrI3 to be an ideal system to harness both basic magnetic physics and building blocks for magnetoelastic applications.

Abstract:Novel 2D magnets exhibit intrinsic electrically tunable magnetism down to the monolayer limit, which has significant value for nonvolatile memory and emerging computing device applications. In these compounds, spin-phonon coupling (SPC) typically plays a crucial role in magnetic fluctuations, magnon dissipation, and ultimately establishing long-range ferromagnetic order. However, a systematic understanding of SPC in 2D magnets that combines theory and experiment is still lacking. In this work, monolayer chromium tribromide is studied to investigate SPC in 2D magnets via Raman spectroscopy and first principle calculations. The experimental Curie temperature and phonon shifts are found to be in good agreement with the numerical simulations. Specifically, it is demonstrated how magnetic exchange interactions affect phonon vibrations, which helps establish design fundamentals for 2D magnetic materials and other related devices.

Abstract:The magnetic properties in two-dimensional van der Waals materials depend sensitively on structure. CrI3, as an example, has been recently demonstrated to exhibit distinct magnetic properties depending on the layer thickness and stacking order. Bulk CrI3 is ferromagnetic (FM) with a Curie temperature of 61 K and a rhombohedral layer stacking, whereas few-layer CrI3 has a layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with a lower ordering temperature of 45 K and a monoclinic stacking. In this work, we use cryogenic magnetic force microscopy to investigate CrI3 flakes in the intermediate thickness range (25-200 nm) and find that the two types of magnetic orders, hence the stacking orders, can coexist in the same flake with a layer of ∼13 nm at each surface being in the layered AFM phase similar to few-layer CrI3 and the rest in the bulk FM phase. The switching of the bulk moment proceeds through a remnant state with nearly compensated magnetic moment along the c-axis, indicating formation of c-axis domains allowed by a weak interlayer coupling strength in the rhombohedral phase. Our results provide a comprehensive picture on the magnetism in CrI3 and point to the possibility of engineering magnetic heterostructures within the same material.

Abstract:The CrI3 monolayer is the first ferromagnetic two-dimensional material experimentally discovered and the study of its properties is a hot topic. First-principles calculations and experimental measurements show that the CrI3 monolayer is a typical S = 3 / 2 localized magnetic system. In the present work, we investigated the intrinsic magnetic properties of CrI3 monolayer based on the anisotropic Heisenberg model and using the double-time Green’s function method. The Hamiltonian parameter values of CrI3 monolayer are estimated theoretically based on the experimental Curie temperature of CrI3 monolayer and the experimental magnetic parameters of CrI3 bilayers. The spontaneous magnetization and zero-field susceptibility are calculated, and the critical behaviors of the system are analyzed. We observe that the maximum magnetic susceptibility value is sensitive to the isotropic exchange parameter and external magnetic field, but almost independent of anisotropic strengths.

In a monolayer, the forbidden Raman scattering of A(1g) mode can be detected in the XY channel at low temperatures. However, in the bilayer, the A(g) mode splits into two modes, and the selection rules of the splitting modes are determined by the magnetic order and symmetry. In contrast, the inversion symmetry of the spin structure is maintained in both antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) states in the trilayer (3L) CrI3, and the evolution of its Raman scattering with magnetic field is not yet clear. In this work, we use magneto-optical polarized Raman spectroscopy and reflective magnetic circular dichroism to investigate the Davydov splitting of the A(g) phonon mode and its coupling to layered magnetism in 2-5L CrI3. Our results show that the Raman scattering of the A(g) mode is strongly coupled to the layered magnetic order, indicating strong spin-phonon coupling in CrI3. Our study might shed light on the research on interaction between magnetic and vibrational properties of 2D magnetic materials and provide important implications for developing novel 2D spintronic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic ferromagnetism provide unique opportunity to engineer new functionalities in nano-spintronics. One such material is CrI_3, showing long-range magnetic order in monolayer with the Curie temperature (T_c) of 45 K. Here we study detailed evolution of magnetic transition and magnetic critical properties in response to systematic reduction in crystal thickness down to 50 nm. Bulk T_c of 61 K is gradually suppressed to 57 K, however, the satellite transition at T^* = 45 K is observed layer-independent at fixed magnetic field of 1 kOe. The origin of T^* is proposed to be a crossover from pinning to depinning of magnetic domain walls. The reduction of thickness facilitates a field-driven metamagnetic transition around 20 kOe with out-of-plane field, in contrast to the continuous changes with in-plane field. The critical analysis around T_c elucidates the mean-field type interactions in microscale-thick CrI_3.

Abstract:Exploring new parameter regimes to realize and control novel phases of matter has been a main theme in modern condensed matter physics research. The recent discovery of 2D magnetism in nearly freestanding monolayer atomic crystals has already led to observations of a number of novel magnetic phenomena absent in bulk counterparts. Such intricate interplays between magnetism and crystalline structures provide ample opportunities for exploring quantum phase transitions in this new 2D parameter regime. Here, using magnetic field and temperature dependent circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy of phonons and magnons, we map out the phase diagram of CrI3 that has been known to be a layered AFM in its 2D films and a FM in its 3D bulk. We, however, reveal a novel mixed state of layered AFM and FM in 3D CrI3 bulk crystals where the layered AFM survives in the surface layers and the FM appears in deeper bulk layers. We then show that the surface layered AFM transits into the FM at a critical magnetic field of 2 T, similar to what was found in the few layer case. Interestingly, concurrent with this magnetic phase transition, we discover a first-order structural phase transition that alters the crystallographic point group from C3i to C2h and thus, from a symmetry perspective, this monoclinic structural phase belongs to the 3D nematic order universality class. Our result not only unveils the complex single magnon behavior in 3D CrI3, but also settles down the puzzle of how CrI3 transits from a bulk FM to a thin layered AFM semiconductor, despite recent efforts in understanding the origin of layered AFM in CrI3 thin layer, and reveals the intimate relationship between the layered AFM-to-FM and the crystalline rhombohedral-to-monoclinic phase transitions. These findings further open up opportunities for future 2D magnet-based magneto-mechanical devices.

Abstract:Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials have received tremendous attention recently due to its potential application in spintronics and other magnetism related fields. To our knowledge, five kinds of 2D materials with intrinsic magnetism have been synthesized in experiment. They are CrI3, Cr2Ge2Te6, FePS3, Fe3GeTe2 and VSe2. Apart from the above intrinsic magnetic 2D materials, many strategies have also been proposed to induce magnetism in normal 2D materials such as atomic modification, spin valve and proximity effect. Various devices have also been designed to fulfill the basic functions of spintronics: inducing spin, manipulating spin and detecting spin.
