Abstract:The Isotope Decay-At-Rest (IsoDAR) experiment is a short baseline neutrino experiment designed to measure neutrino oscillations by placing a high flux anti-neutrino source near a kiloton scale scintillator detector. A high current proton beam will be used to produce the large number of anti-neutrinos needed. Reaching the design goal of 10 mA of 60 MeV protons on target requires advancements in accelerator technology. This will be achieved using a high intensity H2+ ion source followed by a radio-frequency quadrupole and spiral inflector to axially inject ions into a compact cyclotron. This high current cyclotron could also be applied to producing valuable isotopes in quantities that are beyond the reach of existing technology. We will discuss the results of our latest studies of this injection system. This work is being presented on behalf of the IsoDAR collaboration.

Abstract:The very-high current cyclotrons being designed for the IsoDAR and DAEdALUS experiments are of value to fields outside of neutrino physics. In particular, the medical isotopes industry can benefit from these cyclotron developments to produce a new generation of machines with capabilities far in excess of today's technology. This paper provides a tutorial on the field of medical isotopes: from properties of isotopes desired for clinical applications, to production considerations and available technology, concluding with discussion of the impact of the new cyclotrons on the field.

Abstract:Abstract The IsoDAR collaboration is developing a high-current cyclotron for a neutrino search experiment. Designed to deliver 10 mA of 60 MeV protons, the current and power of this cyclotron far exceed those of existing accelerators, opening new possibilities for the production of radiopharmaceutical isotopes, producing very high-activity samples in very short times. The cyclotron can also be easily configured to deliver ions other than protons including 1 mA of alpha particles at 240 MeV: this flexibility gives a broad reach into new areas of isotope production. We explain how IsoDAR overcomes the beam limits of commercial cyclotrons, and how it could represent the next step in isotope production rates.

This performance is required to develop a neutrino source of sufficient strength for meaningful "decay-at-rest" experiments, but it also can have important ramifications for the isotope-production sector for medical or other applications, by enabling efficient, high-yield production of long-lived isotopes, or isotopes where production cross sections are low.

Abstract:The IsoDAR cyclotron is a 60 MeV cyclotron designed to output 10mA of protons in order to be a driver for a neutrino experiment. Coupling the high flux generated by the IsoDAR system with a kiloton neutrino detector will provide sterile neutrino exclusion searches covering anomalous regions indicated by short baseline experiments. Simultaneously, the coupling of a high power target and kiloton detector allows for the investigation of dark matter candidates, namely axion-like particles. We have shown that nuclear excitations within the IsoDAR target create a unique opportunity to produce axions and detect monoenergetic peaks with the nearby kiloton detector. Beyond this, the high power produced by the IsoDAR cyclotron can be used for applications beyond particle physics. The IsoDAR cyclotron accelerates and extracts H$_2^+$, which allows the beam to be split downstream, a versatile and important development to alleviate the problem of producing high-power targets for the medical isotope community. This thesis presents a proposal for production of an more than an order of magnitude higher rates than are available at present for certain highly-need medical isotopes, including Ac-225. In this thesis, we report results from a multi-cusp ion source that meets these requirements and produces a record level of high purity, low emittance H$_2^+$ current. The second has been to design a radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) that will allow for gentle bunching of the high current before injection. This is the first use of axial direct injection with a compact cyclotron. This thesis reports the first application of machine learning to the RFQ design. These tools enable the high currents required by IsoDAR cyclotron, leading to important impact on the accelerator, medical, and physics communities.
A New Family of High-Current Cyclotrons for Isotope Production

Abstract:We are developing a high-current cyclotron as a driver for the IsoDAR neutrino experiment. It accelerates 5 mA H2+ to 60 MeV/amu, after which the electron is removed to produce a 10 mA, 60 MeV proton beam. The enabling innovations that offset space-charge effects occur at injection and in the first few turns, allowing one to construct cyclotrons with energies ranging from below 5 MeV up to 60 MeV/amu, or possibly higher, with the same performance for accelerated ions with Q/A = 0.5 (H2+, D+, He++, ...). In this paper, we discuss the possible uses of such cyclotrons for isotope production, including production of long-lived generator parents (68Ga, 44Ti, 82Sr,...), as well as intense fast neutron beams from deuteron breakup for (n,2n) production of isotopes like 225Ac.

Abstract:A 12.5MeV, 25μA, proton compact superconducting cyclotron for medical isotope production has been designed and is currently in fabrication. The machine is initially aimed at producing 13N ammonia for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) cardiology applications. With an ultra-compact size and cost-effective price point, this system will offer clinicians unprecedented access to the preferred radiopharmaceutical isotope for cardiac PET imaging. A systems approach that carefully balanced the subsystem requirements coupled to precise beam dynamics calculations was followed. The system is designed to irradiate a liquid target internal to the cyclotron and to minimize the need for radiation shielding. The main parameters of the cyclotron, its design, and principal steps of the development work are presented here.

Abstract:Using H2+ ions is expected to mitigate the two major impediments to accelerating very high currents in cyclotrons, due to lower space charge at injection, and stripping extraction. Planning for peak currents of 10 particle milliamps at 800 MeV/amu, these cyclotrons can generate adequate neutrino fluxes for Decay-At-Rest (DAR) studies of neutrino oscillation and CP violation. The Injector Cyclotron, at 60 MeV/amu can also provide adequate fluxes of electron antineutrinos from 8Li decay for sterile neutrino searches in existing liquid scintillator detectors at KamLAND or SNO+. This paper outlines programs for designing and building these machines.

Abstract:In recent years, the interest in high intensity proton beams in excess of several milli-amperes has risen. Potential applications are in neutrino physics, materials and energy research, and isotope production. Continuous wave proton beams of five to ten milli-amperes are now in reach due to advances in accelerator technology and through improved understanding of the beam dynamics. As an example application, we present the proposed IsoDAR experiment, a search for so-called sterile neutrinos and non-standard interaction using the KamLAND detector located in Japan. We present updated sensitivities for this experiment and describe in detail the design of the high intensity proton driver that uses several novel ideas. These are: accelerating H 2 + instead of protons, directly injecting beam into the cyclotron via a radio frequency quadrupole, and carefully matching the beam to achieve so-called vortex motion. The preliminary design holds up well in PIC simulation studies and the injector system is now being constructed, to be commissioned with a 1MeV/amu test cyclotron.

Abstract:The Decay-At-rest Experiment for delta-CP violation At a Laboratory for Underground Science (DAEdALUS) and the Isotope Decay-At-Rest experiment (IsoDAR) are proposed experiments to search for CP violation in the neutrino sector, and "sterile" neutrinos, respectively. In order to be decisive within 5 years, the neutrino flux and, consequently, the driver beam current (produced by chained cyclotrons) must be high. H2+ was chosen as primary beam ion in order to reduce the electrical current and thus space charge. This has the added advantage of allowing for stripping extraction at the exit of the DAEdALUS Superconducting Ring Cyclotron (DSRC). The primary beam current is higher than current cyclotrons have demonstrated which has led to a substantial R&D effort of our collaboration in the last years. We present the results of this research, including tests of prototypes and highly realistic beam simulations, which led to the latest physics-based design. The presented results suggest that it is feasible, albeit challenging, to accelerate 5 mA of H2+ to 60 MeV/amu in a compact cyclotron and boost it to 800 MeV/amu in the DSRC with clean extraction in both cases.

Abstract:PurposeThis study was aimed at establishing a list of radionuclides of interest for nuclear medicine that can be produced in a high-intensity and high-energy cyclotron.MethodsWe have considered both therapeutic and positron emission tomography radionuclides that can be produced using a high-energy and a high-intensity cyclotron such as ARRONAX, which will be operating in Nantes (France) by the end of 2008. Novel radionuclides or radionuclides of current limited availability have been selected according to the following criteria: emission of positrons, low-energy beta or alpha particles, stable or short half-life daughters, half-life between 3 h and 10 days or generator-produced, favourable dosimetry, production from stable isotopes with reasonable cross sections.ResultsThree radionuclides appear well suited to targeted radionuclide therapy using beta (67Cu, 47Sc) or alpha (211At) particles. Positron emitters allowing dosimetry studies prior to radionuclide therapy (64Cu, 124I, 44Sc), or that can be generator-produced (82Rb, 68Ga) or providing the opportunity of a new imaging modality (44Sc) are considered to have a great interest at short term whereas 86Y, 52Fe, 55Co, 76Br or 89Zr are considered to have a potential interest at middle term.ConclusionsSeveral radionuclides not currently used in routine nuclear medicine or not available in sufficient amount for clinical research have been selected for future production. High-energy, high-intensity cyclotrons are necessary to produce some of the selected radionuclides and make possible future clinical developments in nuclear medicine. Associated with appropriate carriers, these radionuclides will respond to a maximum of unmet clinical needs.

Abstract:Cyclotrons are one of the most important sources of radionuclides used in biomedical applications. The production of important radionuclides used in single-photon emission tomography techniques such as 123 I, 67 Ga, 201 Tl, and 111 In has been based for decades on cyclotrons, typically proton machines with an energy up to 30 MeV. The extraordinary growth of positron emission tomography (PET) has led to the development of new models and to the installation of numerous cyclotrons, typically accelerating protons in the energy range 10 to 20 MeV. These have been used for the production of the main PET radionuclides, namely, 11 C, 13 N, 15 O, and above all, 18 F. Recently, their use has been extended to the production of radiometals, like 68 Ga, and even to the direct production of 99m Tc. Moreover, cyclotrons are a valuable tool for research and for the education of new scientists. This critical review presents the main manufacturers and briefly discusses the characteristics of the models they currently offer on the market.

Abstract:A survey of commercial cyclotrons for production of medical and industrial isotopes is presented. Compact isochronous cyclotrons which accelerate negative hydrogen ions in the energy range 10–30 MeV have been widely used over the last 25 years for production of medical isotopes and other applications. Different cyclotron models for the energy range 10–12 MeV with moderate beam intensity are used for production of 11C, 13N, 15O, and 18F isotopes widely applied in positron emission tomography. Commercial cyclotrons with high beam intensity are available on the market for production of most medical and industrial isotopes. In this work, the physical and technical parameters of different models are compared. Possibilities of improving performance and increasing intensity of H− beams up to 2–3 mA are discussed.

Abstract:The report contains a description of the conceptual design of a compact superconducting cyclotron, which can produce 20-MeV proton beam for isotopes production. The goal of the present project is to develop a machine that can be cost-effective, of small size and reliable in comparison with other particle accelerator systems aimed for producing proton beam of similar energy. Superconductivity is now a well established technology. Its application permits high magnetic field of the ultra-compact cyclotron that after careful system modeling and optimization can produce sufficiently good final beam parameters. The main parameters of the cyclotron, its design, and major stages of the development work are described in the report.

Abstract:The concept of theranostics in nuclear medicine is based on the use of a pair of radioisotopes to label radiopharmaceuticals for both diagnosis and therapy and is essential for nuclear medicine developments. The production of novel medical radioisotopes using solid target stations is challenging and new instruments and methods are needed. A research program is ongoing at the 18 MeV Bern medical cyclotron, equipped with a Solid Target Station and a 6.5 m Beam Transfer Line ending in a separate bunker. To irradiate isotope-enriched materials in form of compressed powder pellets, a novel target coin was conceived and realized together with methods to assess the beam energy and the production cross sections. To optimize the irradiation procedure, a novel ultra-compact active irradiation system based on a specific magnetic lens and a two-dimensional beam detector was conceived, constructed and tested. The system allows to control on-line the size and position of the beam and to correct its characteristics by steering and focusing it in order to keep it on target. The first results on the production of several radionuclides ( 43 Sc, 44 Sc, 47 Sc, 61 Cu, 64 Cu, 67 Cu, 68 Ga, 165 Er, 165 Tm, 167 Tm and 155 Tb) are presented.

Abstract:The production of medical radionuclides is one of the research activities carried out in the framework of the SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) project under the completion stage at the Legnaro National Laboratories of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN-LNL). The heart of SPES is the 70-MeV proton cyclotron having a dual-beam extraction, installed and commissioned in a new building equipped with ancillary laboratories currently under construction. The SPES main goal is the realization of an advanced ISOL (Isotope Separation On-Line) facility to produce re-accelerated exotic ion beams for fundamental nuclear physics studies. The cyclotron double-beam extraction system allows to simultaneously carry out applied research, such as radionuclides production for medicine (SPES- ). This paper summarizes the results obtained with the interdisciplinary projects LARAMED (LAboratory of RAdionuclides for MEDicine) and ISOLPHARM (ISOL technique for radioPHARMaceuticals). The first one, based upon the direct activation method, is focused on the production of the radionuclides under the spotlight of the international community (e.g., Tc, Cu, Mn, Sc and Tb isotopes), from the nuclear cross-section measurements up to the preclinical studies. The other one exploits the ISOL technique for the development and production of radioisotopes with high-specific activity, such as Ag, going beyond the state of the art in the field. The most recent SPES- research activities and future perspective are here described, characterized by a consolidated network of collaborations with national and international institutions.

An RFQ Direct Injection Scheme for the IsoDAR High Intensity $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ Cyclotron

Abstract:IsoDAR is a novel experiment designed to measure neutrino oscillations through $\bar{\nu}_e$ disappearance, thus providing a definitive search for sterile neutrinos. In order to generate the necessary anti-neutrino flux, a high intensity primary proton beam is needed. In IsoDAR, $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ is accelerated and is stripped into protons just before the target, to overcome space charge issues at injection. As part of the design, we have refined an old proposal to use an RFQ to axially inject bunched $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ ions into the driver cyclotron. This method has several advantages over a classical low energy beam transport (LEBT) design: (1) The bunching efficiency is higher than for the previously considered two-gap buncher and thus the overall injection efficiency is higher. This relaxes the constraints on the $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ current required from the ion source. (2) The overall length of the LEBT can be reduced. (3) The RFQ can also accelerate the ions. This enables the ion source platform high voltage to be reduced from 70 kV to 15 kV, making underground installation easier. We are presenting the preliminary RFQ design parameters and first beam dynamics simulations from the ion source to the spiral inflector entrance.

Practical experience and challenges in the operation of medical cyclotron

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this article was to share 10 years of operational experience of medical cyclotron and to provide working knowledge on the same. This experience has helped us gain working knowledge on cyclotron operation with practical points, which may help in improving F yield, minimizing the breakdown time, and help in the prevention of the occurrence of unusual events. Materials and methods: Our facility has a self-shielded radioisotope delivery system eclipse 111 medical cyclotron with an 11 MeV proton beam in use for the past 10 years to produce positron emitters - namely, F, N, and F-2 gas - for PET imaging. During F production, we have followed a set protocol comprising the following: monitoring target pressure, rinsing the target with O water just immediately after bombardment, ion source feedback, radiofrequency (RF) feedback, and recording any unusual events that occurred during the operation. Besides this, enrichment of O water, target volume, target current, energy of the beam, variation in argon pressure on the target, bombardment duration, target status (new or old target or total number of previous bombardments on the same target), status of the delivery lines from target to the radiochemistry module (old or new) were also recorded. Results: Rinsing with O water immediately after bombardment increases the life of the target and delivery line. The frequent problems encountered were with the ion source, RF, and target foil rupture. These problems were solved by rebuilding the ion source, changing the fuse of RF, and rebuilding the target. Conclusion: F yield can be increased by rinsing with O water immediately after bombardment. The effect of target leak - that is, rupture of vacuum window - can be avoided by immediate stoppage of bombardment.

Abstract:This Preliminary Design Report (PDR) describes the IsoDAR electron-antineutrino source. Volumes I and II are site-independent and describe the cyclotron driver providing a 10~mA proton beam, and the medium energy beam transport line and target, respectively. Volume III describes the installation at the Yemilab underground laboratory in South Korea. The IsoDAR driver and target will produce a mole of electron-antineutrinos over the course of five years. Paired with a kton-scale liquid scintillator detector, it will enable an impressive particle physics program including searches for new symmetries, new interactions and new particles. Here in Volume I, we describe the driver, which includes the ion source, low energy beam transport, and cyclotron. The latter features radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) direct axial injection and represents the first accelerator purpose-built to make use of vortex motion.

Abstract:The scientific design of a 14-MeV H− compact superconducting cyclotron for producing of the 18F and 13N isotopes has been developed. Main requirements to the facility as a medical accelerator are met in the design. In particular, the main requirement for the cyclotron was the smallest possible size due to the superconducting magnet. The calculations show that the proposed cyclotron allows extracted beam intensity over 500 μA. To increase system reliability and production rates, an external H− ion source is applied. The choice of the cyclotron concept, design of the structure elements, calculation of the electromagnetic fields and beam dynamics from the ion source to the extraction system were performed.
