Abstract:Chemical processes induced by surface plasmon resonance have received great attention due to the wide spectral absorption and tunable optical property. Co-catalysts have been introduced into plasmonic-metal/semiconductor photocatalysts to inhibit the recombination of plasmon-induced carriers. However, it is unclear how the locations of co-catalysts (on the surface of plasmonic metal or the semiconductor) affect the plasmonic photocatalystic reactions. Herein, we report that Pt co-catalysts can be selectively deposited on Au nanoparticles (NPs) of Au/C3N4 photocatalysts through an atomic layer deposition method. Compared with the Pt co-catalysts exclusively on C3N4, Pt solely on Au NPs has a 4.5-fold increase in activity for plasmonic hydrogen evolution. The reduced photoluminescence intensity and prolonged photoluminescence lifetime reveal that Pt solely on Au NPs provides higher charge separation efficiency. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Pt co-catalysts solely on Au NPs is attributable to the more efficient and direct utilization of the plasmon resonance-induced electrons and separation of electrons and holes.

Abstract:AuPt alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using a simple photodeposition method to modify defective state gC3N4 nanosheets (HCN) which contained N vacancies, B doping, and -C---N groups. The visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) indicate that AuPt/HCN exhibits high light absorption capability. The photoluminescence spectrum (PL) and steady-state surface photovoltage (SPV) indicate that AuPt/HCN possesses a high rate of photogenerated charge separation and a high efficiency of photogenerated electron transfer. The electrochemical tests indicate that AuPt/HCN exhibits lower electrochemical impedance. AuPt/HCN (1.0 wt%) exhibits outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency, producing hydrogen at a rate of 2095 mu mol center dot g- 1 center dot h- 1 under visible light, which is 2.10 times and 1.55 times higher than that of monometallic Au/HCN (1.0 wt%) (997 mu mol center dot g- 1 center dot h- 1) and Pt/HCN (1.0 wt%) (1349 mu mol center dot g- 1 center dot h- 1), respectively. The bimetallic synergistic effect of AuPt alloy NPs co-catalysts enhances the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of AuPt/HCN composite photocatalysts.

Charge Separation Via Asymmetric Illumination in Photocatalytic Cu2O Particles

Abstract:Solar-driven photocatalytic reactions provide a potential route to sustainable fuels. These processes rely on the effective separation of photogenerated charges, and therefore understanding and exploring the driving force for charge separation is key to improving the photocatalytic performance. Here, using surface photovoltage microscopy, we demonstrate that the photogenerated charges can be separated effectively in a high-symmetry Cu 2 O photocatalyst particle by asymmetric light irradiation. The holes and electrons are transferred to the illuminated and shadow regions, respectively, of a single photocatalytic particle. Quantitative results show that the intrinsic difference between electron and hole mobilities enables a diffusion-controlled charge separation process, which is stronger than that caused by conventional built-in electric fields (40 mV versus 10 mV). Based on the findings, we assemble spatially separated redox co-catalysts on a single photocatalytic particle and, in doing so, enhance the performance for a model photocatalytic reaction by 300%. These findings highlight the driving force caused by charge mobility differences and the use of asymmetric light illumination for charge separation in photocatalysis.

Abstract:The exploitation of morphological engineering strategies enables the design of semiconductor-based photo -catalysts with a precision that significantly enhances their photocatalytic activity. In this study, a paradigm has been provided that embeds plasmonic nanostructures within the bulk of the semiconductor, which demonstrates an improvement in interfacial charge transfer and separation. It involves a distinct core-double shelled Au@carbon dots@CdS hybrid, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic H2 generation under the visible light radiation. The interfacial engineering between the plasmonic nucleus and the semiconductor shell has been performed by the incorporation of carbon dots as faster charge channels. The effective driving force for plasmon-enhanced bulk charge separation of semiconductors and the unhindered interfacial charge transmission derived from carbon dots have been demonstrated by the use of steady state surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient state surface photovoltage (TPV) methods, as well as some intrinsic kinetics information of interfacial photoexcited charge carriers transfer processes.
Ag-Pt bimetallic composite supported on defective C3NX nanosheets for plasmon hot electron-mediated photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:Combining the strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of metallic Ag and the chemically reactive Pt co-catalyst, the Ag-Pt bimetallic composite was prepared and then coated on the surface of the exfoliated defective graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (C3N. NS) for plasmon hot electron-mediated photocatalytic H2 evolution. Under the visible light irradiation, the sample of (1:2) Ag-Pt/C3N.NS exhibits the highest activity (1.25 mmol g-1 h-1), which is 35.7 and 1.7 times higher than that of Ag/C3NX NS and Pt/C3NX NS, respectively. Moreover, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of (1:2) Ag-Pt/C3NX NS reaches 3.3% at 420 nm. The boosted photocatalytic capacity may be ascribed to the utilization of the advantages of the LSPR effect of Ag particles and the Schottky barrier between Pt and C3NX NS, resulting in more electrons participate in the reduction reaction to boost the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance. Abstract:Inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers is of great significance to improve the photocatalytic performance. For hybrid heterostructure photocatalysts, the noble metal is often used to modulate the interfacial charge behavior, which is closed related to metal states. Herein, we construct graphite-like C3N4 and TiO2 (g-C3N4/TiO2) heterostructure with Au nanoparticles tailored on g-C3N4 to form multiple charge separation for high-efficiency charge separation. Due to the enhanced charge separation, Au/g-C3N4/TiO2 heterostructures exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for pollutant removal and water splitting. The apparent rate constant of Rh6G photodegradation achieves 2 times higher increased compared with different g-C3N4/TiO2 heterostructures with Au modulation. Active species trapping experiments indicate that superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) play a most important role in catalytic process. This work provides insights into the distinct roles of Au in heterostructure for significantly enhanced charge separation and paves the way forward in designing high-efficiency heterostructure photocatalysts with noble metal decorated.

Abstract:The challenge of synergistically optimizing different mechanisms limits the further improvement of plasmon-mediated photocatalytic activities. In this work, the CdS/Au-Ag/B-TiO2 photocatalyst, combining a heterojunction structure with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), is prepared by a high-temperature hydrogen reduction and hot solvent method. The novel synergistic interaction at the interface between the electric field and the plasmon electromagnetic field drives effective charge separation with improved photocatalytic efficiency. The Cd3Ti2 catalyst exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity, and the H2 generation efficiency under the full solar spectrum is 15.97 mmol⋅h−1⋅g−1 with good stability as high as 81.3% in 24 h cycles. The CH4 and CO precipitation performances are achieved at 14.2 μmol⋅h−1⋅g−1 and 113.9 μmol⋅h−1⋅g−1, respectively, in the CO2RR process. The design of the synergistic mechanism of the dual electric field offers an important development in the field of plasma-mediated photoredox catalysis.

Abstract:Understanding the underlying kinetic mechanism of plasmon-enhanced catalysis is important for designing optimized bimetal nanostructures. Here, we characterize product formation rate at both the single-particle and ensemble level. The single-particle measurement allows us to reveal the underlying catalytic kinetic mechanisms of a bimetal nanostructure. Combining this with ensemble observations of two different catalytic behaviors of this catalyst with and without illumination shows that energetic charge carriers induce a transition from a competitive reactant adsorption type to a noncompetitive adsorption type, which leads to the suppression of catalytic rate decay at high reactant concentration. Theoretical modeling as well as analysis of hole acceptability of scavengers on Pt and Au surfaces indicates that the Pt light absorptivity is enhanced near Au and the energetic charges may form directly from the Pt part of the Au-Pt nanostructure. The presented study deepens our understanding of plasmon-enhanced catalysis by bimetal nanostructures.

Abstract:Crystal facet engineering of semiconductors has been proven to be an effective strategy to increase photocatalytic performances. However, the mechanism involved in the photocatalysis is not yet known. Herein, we report our success in that photocatalytic performances of the Cl(-) ion capped CoO octahedrons with exposed {111} facets were activated by a treatment using AgNO3 and NH3·H2O solutions. The clean CoO {111} facets were found to be highly reactivity faces. On the basis of the polar structure of the exposed {111} surfaces, a charge separation model between polar {111} surfaces is proposed. There is an internal electric field between polar {111} surfaces due to the spontaneous polarization. The internal electric field provides a driving force for charge separation. The reduction and oxidation reactions selectively take place on the positive and negative polar {111} surfaces. The charge separation model provides a clear insight into charge transfer in the semiconductor nanocrystals with high photocatalytic activities and offer guidance to design more effective photocatalysts, solar cells, photoelectrodes, and other photoelectronic devices.

Abstract:To achieve a highly efficient charge transfer and separation for photocatalysis, we propose a bridging effect to construct a direct charge transfer path in g-C3N4 via introducing Co atoms into the nitride pores of g-C3N4 to trigger a superficial potential trap. By utilizing such superficial potential trap, the Co atom can bridge the ultrafine Pt NPs and g-C3N4 as catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. The bridging effect of Co heteroatom in g-C3N4(Co)/Pt can rapidly transfer the photo-generated electrons on g-C3N4 to Pt NP surface, thus significantly improving the charge separation efficiency. Moreover, the water molecule is more easily dissociated by Co atom bridge, enabling its kinetics favorable for photocatalytic hydrogen reaction. As a consequence, the photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of g-C3N4(Co)/Pt reaches 7.145 mmol g−1 h−1 with an excellent apparent quantum efficiency of 19.0% at 420 nm, which is 145.8 times than that of pristine g-C3N4.

Abstract:Highlights A hybrid co-catalysts system comprising Au nanoparticles (NPs) and PtSAs with different functions was constructed on the polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) surface by double-solvent method. For the dual co-catalysts, the Au NPs absorb relatively long-wavelength light to produce plasmonic hot-electrons, and the adjacent Pt single atoms (PtSAs) can trap the plasmonic hot-electrons effectively for H 2 evolution. The PtSAs–Au 2.5 /PCN exhibits excellent broad-spectrum photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity with the H 2 evolution rate of 8.8 mmol g − 1 h − 1 at 420 nm and 264 μmol g − 1 h − 1 at 550 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract While the surface charge state of co-catalysts plays a critical role for boosting photocatalysis, studies on surface charge regulation via their precise structure control remain extremely rare. Herein, metal-organic framework (MOF) stabilized bimetallic Pd@Pt nanoparticles, which feature adjustable Pt coordination environment and a controlled structure from core-shell to single-atom alloy (SAA), have been fabricated. Significantly, apart from the formation of a Mott-Schottky junction in a conventional way, we elucidate that Pt surface charge regulation can be alternatively achieved by changing its coordination environment and the structure of the Pd@Pt co-catalyst, where the charge between Pd and Pt is redistributed. As a result, the optimized Pd10@Pt1/MOF composite, which involves an unprecedented SAA co-catalyst, exhibits exceptionally high photocatalytic hydrogen production activity, far surpassing its corresponding counterparts.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor-metal nanoheterostructures that combine the light-harvesting ability of semiconductor nanocrystals with the catalytic activity of small metal nanoparticles show promising applications for photocatalysis, including light-driven H(2) production. The exciton in the semiconductor domain can be quenched by electron-, hole-, and energy transfer to the metal particle, and the competition between these processes determines the photocatalytic efficiency of these materials. Using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, we show that, in CdS-Pt heterostructures consisting of a CdS nanorod with a Pt nanoparticle at one end, the excitons in the CdS domain dissociate by ultrafast electron transfer (with a half-life of ∼3.4 ps) to the Pt. The charge separated state is surprisingly long-lived (with a half-life of ∼1.2 ± 0.6 μs) due to the trapping of holes in CdS. The asymmetry in the charge separation and recombination times is believed to be the key feature that enables the accumulation of the transferred electrons in the Pt tip and photocatalysis in the presence of sacrificial hole acceptors.

Abstract:Awide range of light absorption and rapid electron-hole separation are desired for efficient photocatalysis. Herein, on the basis of a semiconductor-like metal-organic framework (MOF), a Pt@MOF/Au catalyst with two types of metal-MOF interfaces integrates the surface plasmon resonance excitation of Au nanorods with a Pt-MOF Schottky junction, which not only extends the light absorption of the MOF from the UV to the visible region but also greatly accelerates charge transfer. The spatial separation of Pt and Au particles by the MOF further steers the formation of charge flow and expedites the charge migration. As a result, the Pt@MOF/Au presents an exceptionally high photocatalytic H-2 production rate by water splitting under visible light irradiation, far superior to Pt/MOF/Au, MOF/Au and other counterparts with similar Pt or Au contents, highlighting the important role of each component and the Pt location in the catalyst.

Abstract:We have synthesized Pt@Au and Pt@Cu bimetallic nanoparticles and investigated their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic activity in the quantum size regime. The SPR wavelength of Pt@Au bimetallic nanoparticles monotonously blue-shifts as the thickness of Pt shell increases comparing with the quantum-sized Au core nanoparticles with diameter dAu = 3.6 ± 0.4 nm. On the other hand, the SPR of Pt@Cu bimetallic nanoparticles blue-shifts at first and then red-shifts as the Pt shell thickness increases comparing to the quantum-sized Cu core nanoparticles with diameter dCu = 3.7 ± 0.5 nm. Then, we comparatively investigated the photocatalytic activities of the Pt@Au nanoparticles with quantum and classical sizes. The photocatalytic rate for 4-NP:NaBH4 is enhanced 2 times by the strong plasmon resonance and the large surface area/volume ratio of quantum-sized Pt@Au nanoparticles. Additionally, the increasing photocatalytic activity of the quantum-sized Pt@Cu with the increase of Pt shell thickness is also observed. These findings reveal the significance of the quantum plasmon resonance on the enhancement of photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Hybrid photocatalysts containing plasmonic metal and semiconductor building blocks can alleviate charge carrier recombination and broaden the range of light absorption of the semiconductor. In this work, plasmonic Au nanocrystals of different sizes and shapes (spheres and rods) are attached on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets through electrostatic attraction. The effects of the morphology and loading amount of the Au nanocrystals are carefully studied for understanding and optimizing the hybrid photocatalysts. The optimized 18 nm-sized Au nanospheres/g-C3N4 photocatalyst exhibits a superior activity for H-2 evolution at a rate of 540 mmol g(-1) h(-1) under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), exceeding those produced over larger-sized Au nanospheres/g-C3N4, Au nanorods/g-C3N4 and photodeposited Au nanoparticles/g-C3N4 photocatalysts. The excellent activity for H-2 evolution is attributed to the electron sink and plasmonic effects of the Au nanocrystals in different spectral regions, as evidenced by photocurrent measurements. The introduced plasmonic Au nanocrystals not only enhance the photocatalytic activity, but they also endow the hybrid photocatalysts with an extended light absorption range. Our results and understanding will be useful for the design of efficient plasmonic photocatalysts for solar to fuel energy conversion as well as for other plasmon-driven chemical reactions.
Ag–Pt Bimetallic Composite Supported on Defective C3N Nanosheets for Plasmon Hot Electron-Mediated Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Abstract:Combining the strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of metallic Ag and the chemically reactive Pt co-catalyst, the Ag-Pt bimetallic composite was prepared and then coated on the surface of the exfoliated defective graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (C3N. NS) for plasmon hot electron-mediated photocatalytic H2 evolution. Under the visible light irradiation, the sample of (1:2) Ag-Pt/C3N.NS exhibits the highest activity (1.25 mmol g-1 h-1), which is 35.7 and 1.7 times higher than that of Ag/C3NX NS and Pt/C3NX NS, respectively. Moreover, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of (1:2) Ag-Pt/C3NX NS reaches 3.3% at 420 nm. The boosted photocatalytic capacity may be ascribed to the utilization of the advantages of the LSPR effect of Ag particles and the Schottky barrier between Pt and C3NX NS, resulting in more electrons participate in the reduction reaction to boost the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance.
