Abstract:The application of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) for strengthening timber structures has proven its efficiency in enhancing load-bearing capacity and, in some cases, the stiffness of structural elements, thus providing cost-effective and competitive alternatives both in new design and retrofitting existing historical buildings. Over the last few decades, several reinforcing materials and techniques evolved, and considerable progress was made in numerical modelling, especially using the finite element method. As this field of research has become extensive and diversified, as well as numerous contradicting results have emerged, a thorough review is necessary. This manuscript covers the topics of historical preliminaries, reinforcing with carbon and glass fibre composites, bond characteristics, main reinforcing techniques, modelling of knots, and the effects of the fibre waviness on the composite behaviour. A detailed overview is given on the experimental and numerical investigation of mechanics of strengthened beams. A one-of-a-kind table is presented that compares the stiffness improvement observed in several studies with analytical estimates. Attention is drawn to a number of challenges that have arisen, e.g., the moderate stiffness enhancement, composite-to-wood interface, modelling of knots, and strengthening of defected timber members. This paper can be used as a starting point for future research and engineering projects.
Mechanical Properties of Full-Scale Wooden Beams Strengthened with Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Sheets

Abstract:The strengthening, rehabilitation and repair of wooden beams and beams made of wood-based materials are still important scientific and technical issues. This is reflected, among other things, in the number of scientific articles appearing and the involvement of research centres around the world. This is also related to society's growing belief in the importance of ecological and sustainable development. This article presents an overview of the latest work in this field and the results of our own research on strengthening solid wooden beams with carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The tests were carried out on full-size solid beams with nominal dimensions of 70 × 170 × 3300 mm. A 0.333 mm thick CFRP sheet was used for reinforcement. The research analysed various reinforcement configurations and different reinforcement ratios. For the most effective solution, a 46% increase in load capacity, 35% stiffness and 249% ductility were achieved with a reinforcement ratio of 1.7%. Generally, the higher the reinforcement ratio and coverage of the surface of the wood, the higher the strengthening effectiveness. The brittle fracture of wood in the tensile zone for unreinforced beams and the ductile crushing of wood in the compressive zone for reinforced beams were obtained. The most important achievement of this work is the description of the static work of beams in previously unanalysed configurations of strengthening and the confirmation of their effectiveness. The described solutions should extend the life of existing wooden buildings and structures and increase the competitiveness of wooden-based structures. The results indicate that, from the point of view of optimizing the cost of reinforcement, it is crucial to develop cheaper ways of combining wood and composite than to verify different types of fibres.

Abstract:Due to the favourable pro-environmental properties of timber, including the origin of the raw material from renewable sources, ease of reuse, negative carbon footprint, low specific weight, possibility of prefabrication, etc., there is increasing interest in the use of timber in construction. This paper takes a closer look at the new uses of timber as a load-bearing structure for high and high-rise buildings. Cases described in the literature concerning this type of building with residential and public functions erected worldwide were analysed. The first buildings of this type were put into use in 2009. The aim of this paper is to show new possibilities and to extend the use of timber as a load-bearing structure of high and high-rise buildings previously made of reinforced concrete or steel. The scope of the analysis includes two postulates of sustainable construction, directly related to the above-mentioned goals: limiting interference in the natural areas of cities through efficient use of building plots for high or high-rise buildings and the use of renewable materials—timber—for the load-bearing structure of buildings. A research method based on a case study was used. Conclusions were made on the pro-environmental spatial–functional and material–structural design of these high and high-rise buildings.

Abstract:Trees, and their derivative products, have been used by societies around the world for thousands of years. Contemporary construction of tall buildings from timber, in whole or in part, suggests a growing interest in the potential for building with wood at a scale not previously attainable. As wood is the only significant building material that is grown, we have a natural inclination that building in wood is good for the environment. But under what conditions is this really the case? The environmental benefits of using timber are not straightforward; although it is a natural product, a large amount of energy is used to dry and process it. Much of this can come from the biomass of the tree itself, but that requires investment in plant, which is not always possible in an industry that is widely distributed among many small producers. And what should we build with wood? Are skyscrapers in timber a good use of this natural resource, or are there other aspects of civil and structural engineering, or large-scale infrastructure, that would be a better use of wood? Here, we consider a holistic picture ranging in scale from the science of the cell wall to the engineering and global policies that could maximise forestry and timber construction as a boon to both people and the planet.

Abstract:This paper focuses on development of the high energy saving timber building and ecological technology protecting environment in civil engineering. Wood framed with sheathing, large panel structures became more popular building constructions in Poland last decade. Experimental tests and numerical analysis of panels and complete wood framed building have been taken into account. Typical two-story residential building was selected for test. Test of three dimensional (3D) whole building was conducted on the base of experimental investigations results of large panel similar to those used in building structure. Also adequate tests of materials and connections were accompanying of the whole structure investigations. Obtained results were adopted in numerical models elaborated for wall and floor panels and in 3D model of whole building. Load -displacements characteristics were acquired from tests and numerical models. The displacements computed from 3D numerical model were 10–20% higher than from experiment. Experimentally ob-tained lower displacements than those from analytical analysis are resulted from higher stiffness of wall system due to diaphragms interconnections, their common interaction and three-dimensional character of building structure. Presented research analyzed method of computation of internal forces in building as well in the range of engineering methods in the form of rigid beam scheme up to the advanced methods using 3D spatial model adopting FEM.

Abstract:Wood is a green, environmentally sustainable, high-performance structural material that is an attractive candidate to replace nonenvironmental structural materials. However, the mechanical performance of natural wood is generally insufficient in many advanced engineering structures and applications. Herein, we report a simple and effective strategy in a new type of green-enhanced wood development to synthesize a high mechanical biomass structure material from renewable wood resources. In this process, the lignin of the natural wood is partially removed, and the hard cell walls become pliable and easy to handle. After treatment, the wood fiber structure is preserved, and the wood fibers are closely arranged after densification, which shows the reinforced wood with high mechanical properties. The resulting reinforced wood is 8 times stronger than the starting wood and comparable to widely used structure materials such as concrete, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, and magnesium alloy. This method of manufacturing reinforced wood with green, rich, and renewable natural wood is extremely attractive for the sustainable development of engineering structural materials, which broadens the potential of wood as structural materials.

Abstract:The manufacturing of Mass Timber Panels using advanced technologies has enabled the construction of increasingly taller buildings, fully made of wood or with hybrid systems. Historically, there are brilliant examples of wooden architecture that have endured for millennia, demonstrating the material's potential durability. However, the hygroscopic nature of wood still raises questions about its long-term performance. Recent studies show that with proper design and adequate maintenance, Mass Timber structures can have a long service life, being resistant to various climates, including high humidity and heavy rainfall. In planning actions to construct durable buildings, environmental sustainability issues are equally important. Wood, as a renewable energy source, offers significant construction potential. Mass Timber constructions provide significant benefits in terms of carbon reduction, due to wood's ability to sequester carbon throughout its lifecycle. Additionally, wood is a biodegradable material, contributing to a sustainable lifecycle. This article aims to relate the issues of durability and energy efficiency in Mass Timber buildings, proposing that these constructions not only fulfill their environmental role but also provide longevity, safety, and comfort to users. Studies indicate that Mass Timber buildings can be faster to construct and require less labor, reducing overall costs and environmental impacts when compared to traditional construction methods using concrete and steel.
Application of Composite Bars in Wooden, Full-Scale, Innovative Engineering Products—Experimental and Numerical Study

Abstract:The commercialization of modular timber products as cost-effective and lightweight components has resulted in innovative engineering products, e.g., glued laminated timber, laminated veneer lumber, I-beams, cross-laminated timber and solid timber joined with wedge joints. With the passage of time, timber structures can deteriorate, or new structural elements are required to increase the stiffness or load-bearing capacity in newly built structures, e.g., lintels over large-scale glazing or garages, or to reduce cross-sectional dimensions or save costly timber material while still achieving low weight. It is in such cases that repair or correct reinforcement is required. In this experimental and numerical study, the static performance of flexural timber beams reinforced with prestressed basalt BFRP, glass GFRP and hybrid glass–basalt fiber bars is shown. The experimental tests resulted in an increase in the load-carrying capacity of BFRP (44%), GFRP (33%) and hybrid bars (43%) and an increase in the stiffness of BFRP (28%), GFRP (24%) and hybrid bars (25%). In addition to this, glued laminated timber beams reinforced with prestressed basalt rods subjected to biological degradation, 7 years of weathering and prolonged exposure to various environmental conditions were examined, and an increase in the load-bearing capacity of 27% and an increase in stiffness of 28% were obtained. In addition, full-size laminated timber beams reinforced with prestressed basalt bars were investigated in the field as an exploratory test under fire conditions at elevated temperatures, and the effect of the physical–mechanical properties during the fire was examined via an analysis of these properties after the fire. In addition, a satisfactory correlation of the numerical simulations with the experimental studies was obtained. The differences were between 1.1% and 5.5%. The concordance was due to the fact that, in this study, the Young, Poisson and shear moduli were determined for all quality classes of sawn timber. Only a significant difference resulted in the numerical analysis for the beams exposed to fire under fire conditions. The experimental, theoretical and numerical analyses in this research were exploratory and will be expanded as directions for future research.

Fibre-Reinforced Polymers and Steel for the Reinforcement of Wooden Elements-Experimental and Numerical Analysis

Abstract:These elements are innovative and of interest to many researchers for the reinforcement of wooden elements. For the reinforced beam elements, the effect of the reinforcement factor, FRP and steel elastic modulus or FRP and steel arrangement of the reinforcement on the performance of the flexural elements was determined, followed by reading the load-displacement diagram of the reinforced beam elements. The finite element model was then developed and verified with the experimental results, which was mainly related to the fact that the general theory took into account the typical tensile failure mode, which can be used to predict the flexural strength of reinforced timber beams. From the tests, it was determined that reinforced timber beam elements had relatively ductile flexural strengths up to brittle tension for unreinforced elements. As for the reinforcements of FRP, the highest increase in load-bearing capacity was for carbon mats at 52.47%, with a reinforcement grade of 0.43%, while the lowest was for glass mats at 16.62% with a reinforcement grade of 0.22%. Basalt bars achieved the highest stiffness, followed by glass mats. Taking into account all the reinforcements used, the highest stiffness was demonstrated by the tests of the effectiveness of the reinforcement using 3 mm thick steel plates. For this configuration with a reinforcement percentage of 10%, this increase in load capacity was 79.48% and stiffness was 31.08%. The difference between the experimental and numerical results was within 3.62-27.36%, respectively.

Abstract:AbstractAt present, wood is in focus, with many sectors striving to capitalise on its renewability for reducing environmental impacts. Whilst wood offers incredible capabilities, attitudes are conflicted over how best we should manage our expectations of forests, and subsequently, how to value wood. The paper highlights current research into the barriers for a more circular practice of wood, notably defects, that inhibit the reuse of wood in its solid form. The theoretical context for the paper, material agency, provides a framework for discussing the development of closer connections between the heterogeneous material traits found in waste wood, and architecture. This theoretical approach, alongside the motivations from current research form the basis of two 1:1 practice-based waste wood prototypes, that depart from the function of a glulam beam, and a CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) wall. As architectural elements, they aim to integrate inherited material traits, recognising waste wood’s agency in the dialogue between designer and material. The prototypes demonstrate a potential for waste wood to replace virgin material in typical structural functions, as well as offering new aesthetics, that maintain the waste stream’s identity. In conclusion, the paper highlights avenues for further research to enable integrating wood’s agency in sustainable approaches to timber construction.

Abstract:During the twentieth century, reinforced concrete acquired a status of a leading building material. Its wide application influenced the construction technologies and the layout of cities and largely shaped the aesthetics of modernism. At the beginning of this century, the cost of cement and concrete production is showing rapid growth, and the environmental burden from cement production is becoming increasingly unacceptable. Economic and environmental factors force us to look for a replacement for reinforced concrete. In particular, there is renewed interest in wood-based building materials. The problem is that the dominance of concrete has formed a stable orientation of architects to a specific set of properties – isotropy, high density, fire safety, and so on, which are absent from wood. A compromise option is cross-laminated timber (CLT), which at the same time has its own disadvantages and limitations. The article concludes that it is necessary to diversify the palette of building materials and develop special training programs for architects to work with a wide range of building materials.

Therefore,the study on FRP reinforcing wood structures has the practical significance. The research methods and conclusion about compression,flection and shear behavior of wood structures reinforced with FRP are described in detailed. Application of technology of FRP reinforcing wood structures in architecture and bridge is introduced. The lack of research is bound effect of FRP on the wood column,the flection property of reinforced wood beam on the basis of the actual stress-strain model and the shear property of the wood beam reinforced with FRP. The further research about the influence of the methods and design parameters on the behavior of strengthened wood members is proposed to formulate standard of FRP reinforcing wood structures.

Abstract:The complex structure of wood, one of the most abundant biomaterials on Earth, has been optimized over 270 million years of tree evolution. This optimization has led to the highly efficient water and nutrient transport, mechanical stability and durability of wood. The unique material structure and pronounced anisotropy of wood endows it with an array of remarkable properties, yielding opportunities for the design of functional materials. In this Review, we provide a materials and structural perspective on how wood can be redesigned via structural engineering, chemical and/or thermal modification to alter its mechanical, fluidic, ionic, optical and thermal properties. These modifications enable a diverse range of applications, including the development of high-performance structural materials, energy storage and conversion, environmental remediation, nanoionics, nanofluidics, and light and thermal management. We also highlight advanced characterization and computational-simulation approaches for understanding the structure–property–function relationships of natural and modified wood, as well as informing bio-inspired synthetic designs. In addition, we provide our perspective on the future directions of wood research and the challenges and opportunities for industrialization.

Abstract:Use of timber as a construction material has entered a period of renaissance since the development of high-performance engineered wood products, enabling larger and taller buildings to be built. In addition, due to substantial contribution of the building sector to global energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and waste production, sustainable solutions are needed, for which timber has shown a great potential as a sustainable, resilient and renewable building alternative, not only for single family homes but also for mid-rise and high-rise buildings. Both recent technological developments in timber engineering and exponentially increased use of engineered wood products and wood composites reflect in deficiency of current timber codes and standards. This paper presents an overview of some of the current challenges and emerging trends in the field of seismic design of timber buildings. Currently existing building codes and the development of new generation of European building codes are presented. Ongoing studies on a variety topics within seismic timber engineering are presented, including tall timber and hybrid buildings, composites with timber and seismic retrofitting with timber. Crucial challenges, key research needs and opportunities are addressed and critically discussed.
Engineering of material properties by adhesive selection at the example of a novel structural wood material

Abstract:The present study focused on the influence of adhesive selection on the properties of a novel structural wood composite using three different adhesive systems, namely polyurethane (PUR), phenol formaldehyde (PF) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI). As raw material spruce wood was used, which was disintegrated to macroscopic wood fibres, by means of a recently developed non-cutting disintegration process. These macro-fibres are oriented along the naturally grown fibre direction within a tree, have a high aspect ratio and correspondingly excellent mechanical properties together with a favourable density to strength ratio. These macro-fibres represent a challenging new surface for adhesive bonding. Depending on adhesive type, macro-fibre wood composites could be produced within a wide range of density spanning from 200 to 1300 kg/m<sup>3</sup>. Despite of adhesive type and corresponding process needed, density and the total amount of applied adhesive showed highest influence on mechanical and swelling behaviour.

Strengthening of Bent LVL Beams with Near-Surface Mounted (NSM) FRP Reinforcement

Abstract:The topic of the article is the analysis of the static work of unreinforced and reinforced with composite material timber beams under bending tests. The results of the experimental tests and a brief outline of the characteristics of the internal reinforcement of wood structures are presented. Experimental tests were performed on full-scale beams made of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) with nominal dimensions of 45 × 200 × 3400 mm. Two strips of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement were glued into rectangular grooves in the component bottom with two-component epoxy resin (0.62% reinforcement percentage). The reinforcement mainly affected the enhancement of the maximum bending moment values evaluated at the points of application as having concentrated forces of 32% and 24% in comparison to the unreinforced elements. Increases of 11% and 7% in the global modulus of elasticity in the bending and stiffness coefficients were achieved, respectively. The failure of the reference beams was caused by exceeding the tensile strength of the LVL. The reinforced elements were characterized by a greater variation in failure mode, resulting from tension, compression or lateral torsional buckling. The strain profile reading showed a higher utilization of the compression characteristic of veneer in specimens reinforced with carbon laminates.

Abstract:This paper outlines the problems of the construction materials being used in civil engineering at the end of the 20th century and also of the construction materials of the future. The progress that have been made in the domain of basic construction materials such as steel and concrete over the 19th and 20th centuries is analysed. It is described how new materials such as carbon fibre reinforced polymer, high-strength concrete and high-performance concrete, create the possibilities of a further development. New opportunities for modern glued-timber structures are also presented. The limitations of the application of glass and plastics as construction materials are indicated.

Abstract:Problems with the availability of raw materials on the Polish market have forced wood industry producers to search for new, previously unused species of wood that meet the functional requirements of the target products. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on products whose structure is different from the popular offerings on the market. The goal of this study was to analyze the influence of the thickness of Scots pine veneers, also with Alder interlayer variants, on Young's modulus and stiffness values of plywood-like composites dedicated to flooring applications regarding statistically based quality control of the products. The variables in this research are the thickness of the veneer, which creates the structure of the base layer of flooring materials, and the kind of wood used. This research looked at basic mechanical properties determining the suitability of flooring materials: modulus of elasticity and stiffness. Because both these parameters describe the product quality, the analyses were based on the normal distribution (containing kurtosis) and the creation of Shewart Control Charts for each parameter. Analyses of control charts provide information on whether the projected production process is stable and is able to give predictable results. In turn, the analysis of the kurtosis value allows us to determine whether Young's modulus and stiffness values obtained for the products are as close as possible to the values assumed by the manufacturers. The thickness of veneers in the base layer of flooring composites can be enlarged, allowing production to be simplified and more environmentally friendly. New types of layered composites for flooring, manufactured by rotary cutting, without the need for quality assessment, with a minimum number of layers, and additionally verified with Shewart Control Charts, may be applied to production. Presented studies show that veneers of different quality classes, having plywood-like structures, can be used for flooring materials and that the thickness of the veneers in the base layer can be increased. In this way, wood can be used without the need for quality classification and with fewer production processes.

Abstract:<span>Novel approaches for a non-toxic protection of timber have been investigated and referred to as "wood modification". Especially, chemical impregnation modifications show promising opportunities to improve a wide range of wood properties. Yet, most of the available treatments resort to technically synthesized oil-based chemicals. Therefore, new ways of wood modification based on citric acid (CA) and bio-based low-molecular-weight polyols (CA-PO) – both originating from renewable resources – are under test and appear to be a promising alternative to available processes. The mode of action is expected to be a combination of both a cell wall bulking, and a cross-linking between CA-PO polyesters and wood cell wall polymers. However, the treatment process requires optimization with regard to the impregnation system and parameters for an industrial scale implementation. This paper provides a general background about CA-based solid wood treatment and its effects on the characteristics of wood. Moreover, it discusses current developments in this area and points out existing research gaps, with one focus being the process of development on an industrial scale.</span>
