Abstract:Recent developments in the hierarchical organization of micro- and nanoparticles suggest a categorical shift in which the focus has changed from colloidal crystallization based on van der Waals forces to the assembly of clusters of a well-controlled number of particles through various covalent and non-covalent interactions, referred to here as supraparticle chemistry. This article highlights some of the advances that have been made during this transition and discusses some of the promising future directions that should be realized.

Abstract:Significant advances in colloidal synthesis made in the past two decades have enabled the preparation of high quality nanoparticles with well-controlled sizes, shapes, and compositions. It has recently been realized that such nanoparticles can be utilized as 'artificial atoms' for building new materials which not only combine the size- and shape-dependent properties of individual nanoparticles but also create new collective properties by taking advantage of their electromagnetic interactions. The controlled clustering of nanoparticle building blocks into defined geometric arrangements opens a new research area in materials science and as a result much interest has been paid to the creation of secondary structures of nanoparticles, either by direct solution growth or self-assembly methods. In this tutorial review, we introduce recently developed strategies for the creation and surface modification of colloidal nanoparticle clusters, demonstrate the new collective properties resulting from their secondary structures, and highlight several of their many important technological applications ranging from photonics, separation, and detection, to multimodal imaging, energy storage and transformation, and catalysis.

Abstract:The hierarchical nanostructures built from nanounits, such as nanoparticles, nanorods/wires/belts, and nanoplates/disks/sheets, which exhibit unique physical and chemical properties different from those of nanounits, have been widely investigated. To find and investigate the novel nanoarchitectures or hierarchical nanostructures for some functional compounds is still an interesting task not only in answering basic research questions but also in technological applications. This article reviews the recent progress of hierarchical nanomaterials research. In this article mesoporous material, hollow structures, aerogel and other typical hierarchical nanostructures are mainly introduced. A lot of useful solution-phase synthesis routes are classified according to the category, including hydro/solvothermal routes, template methods, solid spheres as precursors, structure-directed reagent assistant methods and irradiation of microwave reaction. The latest developments of hierarchical nanostructures prepared by above methods and their synthesis routes, mechanism are described in detail. And a brief outlook of potential applications of these new materials is also given.

Abstract:Ultrasmall nanoparticles, universally recognized as nanoclusters, exhibit distinctive physical and chemical properties that are typically unobservable in bulk materials, stemming from the profound quantum confinement effects. With significant breakthroughs in crystal structure determination and atomically precise synthesis, nanoclusters have garnered increasing attention due to their intriguing luminescence properties, electronic transitions between highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), chirality, quantized charging capabilities, and magnetic behaviors, along with their promising applications in diverse fields such as energy storage and conversion, catalysis, environmental remediation, and biological medicine. Furthermore, cluster assembly offers a promising route to fabricate innovative materials endowed with captivating properties, thereby offering novel approaches for designing nanocluster-based functional materials. Combining nanoclusters with one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) substrates to form composites usually introduce unusual physicochemical properties that are notably distinct from individual substrates and nanoclusters. Notably, the physicochemical properties of composites constructed by nanoclusters and 1D (or 2D) substrates can be readily tuned by the application of strain or an electric field, offering another additional avenue for designing nanocluster-based functional materials. In the Special Issue of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, entitled "Design of Nanocluster-Based Functional Materials", we've compiled a comprehensive collection of 19 articles, showcasing the latest advancements in the field of cluster design and assembly, cluster adsorption and catalysis, and low-dimensional material devices. In the following, we concisely summarized the key research highlights of these studies.

Abstract:Creation of architectures with exquisite hierarchies actuates the germination of revolutionized functions and applications across a wide range of fields. Hierarchical self‐assembly of colloidal particles holds the promise for materialized realization of structural programing and customizing. This review outlines the general approaches to organize atom‐like micro‐ and nanoparticles into prescribed colloidal analogs of molecules by exploiting diverse interparticle driving motifs involving confining templates, interactive surface ligands, and flexible shape/surface anisotropy. Furthermore, the self‐regulated/adaptive co‐assembly of simple unvarnished building blocks is discussed to inspire new designs of colloidal assembly strategies.

Abstract:Colloidal particles in solution exhibit rich phase behaviors and behavior like “big-atom”. In the past decades, as modelling systems, colloids have been widely employed in the study of nucleation, crystallization, glass transition and melting. A number of advances have been achieved. These advances to a large extent extend and complete the understanding of various phase transitions. Recently, a number of active fields are emerging with colloidal model systems. In this review, the advances and the emerging fields are summarized. At the end, the potential directions and the challenges for future studies are suggested.

Abstract:The structural investigations of nanomaterials motivated by their large variety and diverse set of applications have attracted considerable attention. In particular, the ever-improving machinery, both in laboratory and at large scale facilities, together with the methodical improvements available for studying nanostructures ranging from epitaxial nanomaterials, nanocrystalline thin films and coatings, to nanoparticles and colloidal nanocrystals allows us to gain a more detailed understanding of their structural properties. As the structure essentially determines the physical properties of the materials, this advances the possibilities of structural studies and also enables a deeper understanding of the structure to property relationships. In this special issue entitled "Investigation of Nanostructures with X-ray Scattering Techniques" five contributions show the recent progress in various research fields. Contributions cover topics as diverse as neutron scattering on magnetic multilayer films, epitaxial orientation of organic thin films, nanoparticle ordering and chemical composition analysis, and the combination of nanofocused X-ray beams with electrical measurements.

Abstract:Micrometre sized colloidal particles can be viewed as large atoms with tailorable size, shape and interactions. These building blocks can assemble into extremely rich structures and phases, in which the thermal motions of particles can be directly imaged and tracked using optical microscopy. Hence, colloidal particles are excellent model systems for studying phase transitions, especially for poorly understood kinetic and nonequilibrium microscale processes. Advances in colloid fabrication, assembly and computer simulations have opened up numerous possibilities for such research. In this Review, we describe recent progress in the study of colloidal crystals composed of tunable isotropic spheres, anisotropic particles and active particles. We focus on advances in crystallization, melting and solid solid transitions, and highlight challenges and future perspectives in phase transition studies within colloidal crystals.

Abstract:Anisotropy at the level of the inter-particle interaction provides the particles with specific instructions for the self-assembly of target structures. The ability to synthesize non-spherical colloids, together with the possibility of controlling the particle bonding pattern via suitably placed interaction sites, is nowadays enlarging the playfield for materials design. We consider a model of anisotropic colloidal platelets with regular rhombic shape and two attractive sites placed along adjacent edges and we run Monte Carlo simulations in two-dimensions to investigate the two-stage assembly of these units into clusters with well-defined symmetries and, subsequently, into extended lattices. Our focus is on how the site positioning and site-site attraction strength can be tuned to obtain micellar aggregates that are robust enough to successively undergo to a second-stage assembly from sparse clusters into a stable hexagonal lattice.

Synthesis and Application of Hierarchically Structured Nano-Alumina

Abstract:Nano-alumina with hierarchical structure has recently attracted extensive attention because of its synergism and coupling effect on micro-nano scales. In the paper, the hierarchical structures of nano-alumina reported in the literature have been divided into four main types including hollow sphere, core-shell, cluster, and array. The progress of their synthesis techniques has been reviewed. Several factors affecting the morphology of nano-alumina particles with hierarchical structure in the course of synthesis have been discussed. It has been recognized in the literature that a majority of effects could be altered if changing the synthesis environment, indicating the complexity of hierarchical structure formation. Nevertheless, there is a general rule for the effect of pH in the hydrothermal process on the morphology of the secondary structure of nano-alumina. Acid condition favors the formation of one dimensional nano-alumina while basic condition helps to form two dimensional nano-alumina. The formation mechanism of the hierarchically structured nano-alumina has briefly been explained. Additionally, the effect of hierarchical morphology on the thermal stability of alumina has been depicted using available results presented in the literature. Some examples of the material applied to the areas of luminescence, adsorption and catalysis have been given in the paper. As viewed from the combination of the rational synthesis and the practical applications of the material with specific properties, the prospects of the research on the hierarchically structured nano-alumina have been outlined in the end of the paper.

Beyond, the properties can be tuned and quantum effects can be exploited. This allows understanding electronic and optoelectronic transport phenomena and developing corresponding devices. The state-of-the-art in this field will be reviewed and possible challenges and prospects will be identified.

Abstract:In nature the spontaneous formation of ordered structures from molecules, called self-assembly, is a very common process occurring in inorganic matter and living organisms. It is driven by atoms, molecules, particles, granular matter, etc. trying to reach the lowest possible energy state while interacting with each other. Deeper understanding of the subtleties of such interactions will allow mimicking of this kind of behaviour to build custom structures from synthetic molecules. This review attempts to cover the existing techniques for directed self-assembly that are currently used for colloidal crystal growth with a brief explanation of the interactions involved in each technique. It provides examples of the fundamental phenomena occurring in photonic crystals that, in the future, can be exploited in various applications.

Abstract:Nucleation and growth are two important and entwined processes in materials synthesis and engineering. While understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of the processes remain challenging, there is a growing demand for much improved control over and modification of nanostructures with precise geometrical and chemical features, well-tailored surface properties and functional attributes. To this end, we first examine the key concepts of the classical and non-classical theories and then emphasise mechanistic studies of nucleation and growth. Particularly, the state-of-the-art imaging, signal and/or data acquisition techniques are discussed, including in-situ liquid phase transmission electron microscopy, in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, microfluidic platforms and machine learning. Both quantitative and qualitative experimental results with high temporal and spatial resolutions provide further insights into these nanofabrication processes for representative systems, such as Au nanoparticles and CaCO3, and subsequently guide the rational design and production of materials with desirable properties. Based on current knowledge, strategies of leveraging external fields to manipulate the nucleation and growth processes are presented. Several case studies in important technological scenarios are discussed to inspire further attempts for precisely engineered solutions. Finally, further understanding of the processes are highlighted along with potential applications and future perspectives of controlling solution-synthesized nanostructures.

Abstract:Self-assembly has emerged as a powerful strategy for controlling the structure and physicochemical properties of ensembles of inorganic nanocrystals. Hierarchical structures from nanocrystal assembly show collective properties that differ from individual nanocrystals and bulk samples. Incorporation of structural hierarchy into nanostructures is of great importance as a result of enhancing mass transportation, reducing resistance to diffusion, and high surface areas for adsorption and reaction, and thus much effort has been devoted to the exploration of various novel organizing schemes through which inorganic porous structure with architectural design can be created. In this paper, the recent research progress in this field is reviewed. The general strategies for the synthesis of hierarchical structures assembled from nanobuilding blocks are elaborated. The well-defined hierarchical structures provide new opportunities for optimizing, tuning, and/or enhancing the properties and performance of these materials and have found applications in photoenergy utilization including photodegradation, photocatalytic H2 production, photocatalytic CO2 conversion, and sensitized solar cells, and these are discussed illustratively.

Abstract:The self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles has made it possible to bridge the nanoscopic and macroscopic worlds and to make complex nanostructures. The nanoparticle-mediated assembly enables many potential applications, from biodetection and nanomedicine to optoelectronic devices. Properties of assembled materials are determined not only by the nature of nanoparticle building blocks, but also by spatial positions of nanoparticles within the assemblies. A deep understanding of nanoscale interactions between nanoparticles is a prerequisite to controlling nanoparticle arrangement during assembly. In this review, we present an overview of interparticle interactions governing their assembly in a liquid phase. Considerable attention is devoted to examples that illustrate nanoparticle assembly into ordered superstructures using different types of building blocks, including plasmonic nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, lanthanide-doped nanophosphors, and quantum dots. We also cover the physicochemical properties of nanoparticle ensembles, especially those arising from particle coupling effects. We further discuss future research directions and challenges in controlling self-assembly at a level of precision that is most crucial to technology development.
Hierarchical nanosheets built from superatomic clusters: properties, exfoliation and single-crystal-to-single-crystal intercalation

Abstract:Tuning the properties of atomic crystals in the two-dimensional (2D) limit is synthetically challenging, but critical to unlock their potential in fundamental research and nanotechnology alike. 2D crystals assembled using superatomic blocks could provide a route to encrypt desirable functionality, yet strategies to link the inorganic blocks together in predetermined dimensionality or symmetry are scarce. Here, we describe the synthesis of anisotropic van der Waals crystalline frameworks using the designer superatomic nanocluster Co3(py)3Co6Se8L6 (py = pyridine, L = Ph2PN(Tol)), and ditopic linkers. Post-synthetically, the 3D crystals can be mechanically exfoliated into ultrathin flakes (8 to 60 nm), or intercalated with the redox-active guest tetracyanoethylene in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. Extensive characterization, including by single crystal X-ray diffraction, reveals how intrinsic features of the nanocluster, such as its structure, chirality, redox-activity and magnetic profile, predetermine key properties of the emerging 2D structures. Within the nanosheets, the strict and unusual stereoselectivity of the nanocluster's Co edges for the low symmetry (α,α,β) isomer gives rise to in-plane structural anisotropy, while the helically chiral nanoclusters self-organize into alternating Δ- and Λ-homochiral rows. The nanocluster's high-spin Co edges, and its rich redox profile make the nanosheets both magnetically and electrochemically active, as revealed by solid state magnetic and cyclic voltammetry studies. The length and flexibility of the ditopic linker was varied, and found to have a secondary effect on the structure and stacking of the nanosheets within the 3D crystals. With these results we introduce a deterministic and versatile synthetic entry to programmable functionality and symmetry in 2D superatomic crystals.
