Abstract:The celebrated Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem asserts that, for an ergodic map, orbits of almost every point equidistributes when sampled at integer times. This result was generalized by Bourgain to many natural sparse subsets of the integers. On the other hand, the behaviour of orbits of \textbf{all} points in a dynamical system is much less understood, especially for sparse subsets of the integers. We generalize a method introduced by A. Venkatesh to tackle this problem in two directions, general $\mathbb{R}^d$ actions instead of flows, and weak mixing, rather than mixing, actions. Along the way, we also establish some basic properties of weak mixing and show weak mixing for the time 1-map of a weak mixing flow. The main examples are equidistribution along $\{(n^{1+\epsilon_i})_{i=1}^d\}$, which is a direct generalisation of Venkatesh's example, and equidistribution along random subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for horosperical action.

Abstract:We show that dynamical systems with phi-mixing measures have local escape rates which are exponential with rate 1 at non-periodic points and equal to the extremal index at periodic points. We apply this result to equilibrium states on subshifts of finite type, Gibbs-Markov systems, expanding interval maps, Gibbs states on conformal repellers, and more generally to Young towers, and by extension to all systems that can be modeled by a Young tower.

Abstract:Given a dynamical system, we prove that the shortest distance between two $n$-orbits scales like $n$ to a power even when the system has slow mixing properties, thus building and improving on results of Barros, Liao and the first author. We also extend these results to flows. Finally, we give an example for which the shortest distance between two orbits has no scaling limit.

Weak Mixing Transformation Which Is Shannon Orbit Equivalent to a Given Ergodic Transformation

Abstract:We prove that every ergodic transformation is Shannon orbit equivalent to a weak mixing transformation. The proof is based on the techniques introduced by Fieldsteel and Friedman to show that there is a mixing transformation for a given ergodic transformation $T$ which is, for all $a\geq1$, weak-$a$-equivalent to $T$ and, for all $b\in(0,1)$, strong-$b$-equivalent to $T$. In particular, we will adapt the construction of Fieldsteel and Friedman by which they permute the columns of each Rokhlin tower in a sequence of rapidly growing Rokhlin towers so that the corresponding cocycles converge to an orbit equivalence cocycle of $T$ such that the resulting transformation and orbit equivalence have the desired properties. In addition to this, we will demonstrate a flexible method for obtaining actions of $\mathbb{Z}^{2} $ which are Shannon orbit equivalent to a given ergodic transformation.

Exponential Mixing Via Additive Combinatorics

Abstract:We prove that the geodesic flow on a geometrically finite locally symmetric space of negative curvature is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. The approach is based on constructing a suitable anisotropic Banach space on which the infinitesimal generator of the flow admits an essential spectral gap. A key step in the proof involves estimating certain oscillatory integrals against the Patterson-Sullivan measure. For this purpose, we prove a general result of independent interest asserting that measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ that do not concentrate near proper affine subspaces enjoy polynomial Fourier decay outside of a sparse set of frequencies. As an intermediate step, we show that the $L^q$-dimension ($1<q\leq \infty$) of iterated self-convolutions of such measures tend towards that of the ambient space. Our analysis also yields that the Laplace transform of the correlation function of smooth observables extends meromorphically to the entire complex plane in the convex cocompact case and to a strip of explicit size beyond the imaginary axis in the case the manifold admits cusps.

Exponential mixing and essential spectral gaps for Anosov subgroups

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense $\Theta$-Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group for some nonempty subset of simple roots $\Theta$. In the Anosov setting, there is a natural compact metric space $\mathcal{X}$ equipped with a family of translation flows $\{a^{\mathsf{v}}_t\}_{t \in \mathbb R}$, parameterized by vectors $\mathsf{v}$ in the interior of the $\Theta$-limit cone $\mathcal{L}_\Theta$ of $\Gamma$, and they are Hölder conjugate to Hölder reparametrizations of the Gromov geodesic flow. We prove that for all $\mathsf{v}$ outside an exceptional cone $\mathscr{E} \subset \operatorname{int}\mathcal{L}_\Theta$, which is a smooth image of the walls of the Weyl chamber, the translation flow is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure associated to $\mathsf{v}$. Moreover, the exponential rate is uniform for a compact set of such $\mathsf{v}$. We also obtain an essential spectral gap formulated in terms of the Selberg zeta function and a prime orbit theorem with a power saving error term. Our proof relies on Lie theoretic techniques to prove the crucial local non-integrability condition (LNIC) for the translation flows and thereby implement Dolgopyat's method in a uniform fashion. The exceptional cone $\mathscr{E}$ arises from the failure of LNIC for those vectors.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of weakly mixing sets of order n and show that, in contrast to weak mixing of maps, a weakly mixing set of order n does not have to be weakly mixing of order n + 1. Strictly speaking, we construct a minimal invertible dynamical system which contains a non-trivial weakly mixing set of order 2, whereas it does not contain any non-trivial weakly mixing set of order 3. In dimension one this difference is not that much visible, since we prove that every continuous map f from a topological graph into itself has positive topological entropy if and only if it contains a non-trivial weakly mixing set of order 2 if and only if it contains a non-trivial weakly mixing set of all orders.

Abstract:Abstract We study non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing dynamical systems by using linear dynamical systems. These are systems consisting of a bounded linear operator acting on a separable complex Banach space $X$ , which becomes a probability space when endowed with a non-degenerate Gaussian measure. We generalize some recent results of Bergelson, del Junco, Lemańczyk and Rosenblatt, and show in particular that sets $\{n_{k}\}$ such that $n_{k+1}/n_{k}\to +\infty $ , or such that $n_{k}$ divides $n_{k+1}$ for each $k\ge 0$ , are non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems. We also give examples, for each $r\ge 1$ , of $r$ -Bohr sets which are non-recurrence sets for some weakly mixing systems.

Abstract:We completely characterize rational polygons whose billiard flow is weakly mixing in almost every direction as those which are not almost integrable, in the terminology of Gutkin, modulo some low complexity exceptions. This proves a longstanding conjecture of Gutkin. This result is derived from a complete characterization of translation surfaces that are weakly mixing in almost every direction: they are those that do not admit an affine factor map to the circle.

Closed Orbits of Dynamically Convex Reeb Flows: Towards the HZ- and Multiplicity Conjectures

Abstract:We study the multiplicity problem for prime closed orbits of dynamically convex Reeb flows on the boundary of a star-shaped domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. The first of our two main results asserts that such a flow has at least $n$ prime closed Reeb orbits, improving the previously known lower bound by a factor of two and settling a long-standing open question. The second main theorem is that when, in addition, the domain is centrally symmetric and the Reeb flow is non-degenerate, the flow has either exactly $n$ or infinitely many prime closed orbits. This is a higher-dimensional contact variant of Franks' celebrated $2$-or-infinity theorem and, viewed from the symplectic dynamics perspective, settles a particular case of the contact Hofer-Zehnder conjecture. The proofs are based on several auxiliary results of independent interest on the structure of the filtered symplectic homology and the properties of closed orbits.

Strong mixing for the periodic Lorentz gas flow with infinite horizon

Abstract:We establish strong mixing for the $\mathbb Z^d$-periodic, infinite horizon, Lorentz gas flow for continuous observables with compact support. The essential feature of this natural class of observables is that their support may contain points with infinite free flights. Dealing with such a class of functions is a serious challenge and there is no analogue of it in the finite horizon case. The mixing result for the aforementioned class of functions is obtained via new results: 1) mixing for continuous observables with compact support consisting of configurations at a bounded time from the closest collision; 2) a tightness-type result that allows us to control the configurations with long free flights. To prove 1), we establish a mixing local limit theorem for the Sinai billiard flow with infinite horizon, previously an open question.

Locally homogeneous Axiom A flows I: projective Anosov subgroups and exponential mixing

Abstract:By constructing a non-empty domain of discontinuity in a suitable homogeneous space, we prove that every torsion-free projective Anosov subgroup is the monodromy group of a locally homogeneous contact Axiom A dynamical system with a unique basic hyperbolic set on which the flow is conjugate to the refraction flow of Sambarino. Under the assumption of irreducibility, we utilize the work of Stoyanov to establish spectral estimates for the associated complex Ruelle transfer operators, and by way of corollary: exponential mixing, exponentially decaying error term in the prime orbit theorem, and a spectral gap for the Ruelle zeta function. With no irreducibility assumption, results of Dyatlov-Guillarmou imply the global meromorphic continuation of zeta functions with smooth weights, as well as the existence of a discrete spectrum of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances and (co)-resonant states. We apply our results to space-like geodesic flows for the convex cocompact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of Danciger-Guéritaud-Kassel, and the Benoist-Hilbert geodesic flow for strictly convex real projective manifolds.

Abstract:We consider a Lebesgue measure preserving map of the 2-torus, given by the composition of orthogonal tent shaped shears. We establish strong mixing properties with respect to the invariant measure and polynomial decay of correlations for Holder observables, making use of results from the chaotic billiards literature. The system serves as a prototype example of piecewise linear maps which sit on the boundary of ergodicity, possessing null measure sets around which mixing is slowed and which birth elliptic islands under certain perturbations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study error estimates on the equidistribution of holonomies around closed orbits and mixing rates for $\mathbb{T}^{d}$-extensions of hyperbolic flows. Given three closed orbits with their holonomies, we can relate them to a point in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. We prove that the extension flow enjoys rapid mixing as well as superpolynomial equidistribution, if the associated point is an inhomogeneously Diophantine number. Additionally, we also provide examples of frame flows that meet this criterion.

Abstract:Motivated by work of Dolgopyat and Nándori, we establish a general method for upgrading limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and cocycles over dynamical systems to mixing limit theorems under mild ergodicity and hyperbolicity assumptions. Building on previous work of Al-Saqban and Forni, we apply this method to obtain mixing limit theorems for particular subbundles of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. In forthcoming work of Arana-Herrera and Honaryar these results are applied to study the arithmetic/homological complexity of long simple closed geodesics on negatively curved surfaces.

Abstract:We study the property of uniform discreteness within discrete orbits of non-uniform lattices in $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, acting on $\mathbb{R}^2$ by linear transformations. We provide quantitative consequences of previous results by using Diophantine properties. We give a partial result toward a conjecture of Lelièvre regarding the set of long cylinder holonomy vectors of the "golden L" translation surface: for any $\epsilon>0$, three points of this set can be found on a horizontal line within a distance of $\epsilon$ of each other.

Abstract:In this paper it is shown that every non-periodic ergodic system has two topologically weakly mixing, fully supported models: one is non-minimal but has a dense set of minimal points; and the other one is proximal. Also for independent interests, for a given Kakutani-Rokhlin tower with relatively prime column heights, it is demonstrated how to get a new taller Kakutani-Rokhlin tower with same property, which can be used in Weiss's proof of the Jewett-Krieger's theorem and the proofs of our theorems. Applications of the results are given.
