Abstract:The photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into solar fuels or chemicals is a sustainable approach to relieve the immediate problems related to global warming and the energy crisis. This study concerns the effects of morphological control on a Cu/Cu2O-based photocatalyst for CO2 reduction. The as-synthesized spherical Cu/Cu2O photocatalyst exhibits higher activity than the octahedral one under visible light irradiation. The difference in photocatalytic performance between these two catalysts could be attributed to the following two factors: (1) The multifaceted structure of spherical Cu/Cu2O favors charge separation; (2) octahedral Cu/Cu2O only contains more positively charged (111) facets, which are unfavorable for CO2 photoreduction. The results further highlight the importance of utilizing crystal facet engineering to further improve the performance of CO2 reduction photocatalysts.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts are promising candidates for CO2 reduction owing to the favorable energetics of Cu sites for CO2 adsorption and transformation. However, CO2 reduction involving insurmountable activation barriers and various byproducts remains a significant challenge to achieve high activity and selectivity. Herein, a photocatalyst constructed with single-Ru-site-on-Cu-nanoparticle on Bi4Ti3O12 exhibits exceptional activity and selectivity for CO2 conversion to CO. The experimental and theoretical results consistently reveal that the Ru-Cu dual sites allow the rapid transfer of photogenerated carriers for closely interacting with CO2 molecules. Importantly, the Ru-Cu dual sites exhibit extremely strong CO2 adsorption ability, and the Gibbs free energy of the rate-determining step (*CO2 to *COOH) has been significantly reduced, synergistically enhancing the entire CO2 conversion process. The optimal BTOCu2Ru0.5 photocatalyst manifests a high performance for selective reduction of CO2 to CO, yielding 10.84 μmol over 15 mg of photocatalyst in 4 h (180.67 μmol·g-1·h-1) under a 300 W Xe lamp without any photosensitizer and sacrificial reagent, outperforming all bismuth-based materials and being one of the best photocatalysts ever reported under similar reaction conditions. This work presents a strategy for the rational design of multiple metal sites toward efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2.
Ultrathin Nanosheet Assembled Multishelled Superstructures for Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Solar-driven conversion of CO2 is considered an efficient way to tackle the energy and environmental crisis. However, the photocatalytic performance is severely restricted due to the insufficient accessible active sites and inhibited electron transfer efficiency. This work demonstrates a general in situ topological transformation strategy for the integration of uniform Co-based species to fabricate a series of multishelled superstructures (MSSs) for CO2 photocatalytic conversion. Thorough characterizations reveal the obtained MSSs feature ultrathin Co-based nanosheet assembled polyhedral structures with tunable shell numbers, inner cavity sizes, and compositions. The superstructures increase the spatial density of Co-based active sites while maintaining their high accessibility. Further, the ultrathin nanosheets also facilitate the transfer of photogenerated electrons. As a result, the ZnCo bimetallic hydroxide featuring an ultrathin nanosheet assembled quadruple-shell hollow structure (ZnCo-OH QUNH) exhibits high photocatalytic efficiency toward CO2 reduction with a CO evolution rate of 134.2 μmol h–1 and an apparent quantum yield of 6.76% at 450 nm. Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) represents a prospective route for the clean utilization of greenhouse gas CO2 and solar energy, and cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is a favourable material for the CRR to avoid excess generation of hydrogen through the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the application of Cu2O-based photocatalysts is limited by their poor stability and low activity, which result from the self-corrosion by photogenerated holes. Here we construct a double-shelled Cu2O/MnOx mesoporous hollow structure (D-CMH) to enhance the stability and activity of Cu2O-based photocatalysts. Because of the thin shells, which can shorten the diffusion distance of charge carriers, and the oxidation cocatalyst MnOx, which can efficiently attract holes, the photogenerated holes can be immediately removed from Cu2O and react with reactants. Additionally, the D-CMH can also provide enhanced efficiency of charge separation, prolonged path of light scattering and reflection and enlarged surface area for active sites, which result in the initial activity enhanced by 7.1 times and stability enhanced by 11.2 times compared with benchmark Cu2O nanoparticles.

Abstract:A facile solvothermal approach was successfully employed to prepare titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoaggregates with simultaneous copper particles anchoring. The as-synthesized composite could convert CO2 into CH4 and CO products under simulated solar irradiation. The impact of copper loading amounts on the photoreduction capability was evaluated. It was found proper amount of Cu loading could enhance the activity of CO2 photoreduction. As a result, the optimal composite (TiO2-Cu-5%) consisting of TiO2 supported with 5% (mole ratio) Cu exhibits 2.2 times higher CH4 yield and 3 times higher CO yield compared with pure TiO2. Conduction band calculated from the band gap and valence X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated TiO2 nanoaggregates have suitable band edge alignment with respect to the CO2/CH4 and CO2/CO redox potential. Furthermore, with involving of Cu particles, an efficient separation of photogenerated charges was achieved on the basis of photocurrent response and photoluminescence spectra results, which contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance. The present work suggested that the Cu-decorated TiO2 could serve as an efficient photocatalyst for solar-driven CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Building heterostructure of photocatalysts is considered to be promising for boosting the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we constructed Cu2@UiO-66-NH2 ternary nanocubes via a simple solvothermal reaction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO and CH4. As UiO-66-NH2 uniformly dispersed on Cu2, the well-defined nanocubes with p–n junctions and the presence of electron mediators endow the catalysts with promoted visible-light-absorbing capability and charge carrier density together with facilitated separation and migration of photogenerated electrons, ultimately resulting in boosted photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. Benefiting from the ternary nanocube photocatalyst, the yields of CO and CH4 reach to 20.9 and 8.3 μmol g–1 h–1, respectively. Abstract:Due to the large number of possible products and their similar reduction potentials, a significant challenge in CO2 photoreduction is achieving selectivity to a single product while maintaining high conversion efficiency. Controlling the reaction intermediates that form on the catalyst surface through careful catalyst design is therefore crucial. Here, we prepare atomically thin layers of sulfur-deficient CuIn5S8 that contain charge-enriched Cu–In dual sites, which are highly selective towards photocatalytic production of CH4 from CO2. We propose that the formation of a highly stable Cu–C–O–In intermediate at the Cu–In dual sites is the key feature determining selectivity. We suggest that this configuration not only lowers the overall activation energy barrier, but also converts the endoergic protonation step to an exoergic reaction process, thus changing the reaction pathway to form CH4 instead of CO. As a result, the CuIn5S8 single-unit-cell layers achieve near 100% selectivity for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction to CH4 over CO, with a rate of 8.7 μmol g−1 h−1.

Abstract:Simultaneous photocatalytic reduction of water to H-2 and CO2 to CO was observed over Cu2O photocatalyst under both full arc and visible light irradiation (>420 nm). It was found that the photocatalytic reduction preference shifts from H-2 (water splitting) to CO (CO2 reduction) by controlling the exposed facets of Cu2O. More interestingly, the low index facets of Cu2O exhibit higher activity for CO2 photoreduction than high index facets, which is different from the widely-reported in which the facets with high Miller indices would show higher photoactivity. Improved CO conversion yield could be further achieved by coupling the Cu2O with RuOx to form a heterojunction which slows down fast charge recombination and relatively stabilises the Cu2O photocatalyst. Electro-reduced copper on polymeric C3N4 for photocatalytic reduction of CO2

Abstract:Coupling light absorber with an efficient cocatalyst is the most common way to fabricate composite photocatalyst. The light absorber supplies electrons and holes, while the cocatalyst domains chemical reactions. Inspired by the results from electrochemical CO2 reduction, Cu-based materials are the most promising cocatalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) hasn't been introduced into photocatalytic systems yet, due to easily undergoing valence changes once exposed to air. Herein, we find that OD-Cu could be decorated on photocatalyst, polymeric C3N4 (PCN), by a self-designed in-situ electroreduction method. The as-prepared OD-Cu/PCN presents better visible light absorption than the one without in-situ electroreduction and prefers multi-carbon products. According to CO2RR measurements, the highest selectivity to C2H5OH is 58%. Density functional theory calculation further indicates that the unique structure between OD-Cu and PCN leads to a low energy barrier of C–C coupling due to the enhanced *CO dimerization and thus promotes the production of C2H5OH. Moreover, this optimized sample achieves a solar-to-fuel efficiency, of up to 0.94%, which is 1.69 times the pristine PCN.

Abstract:The visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) (CO2RR) to value-added fuels presents a feasible approach to curb anthropogenic CO2 emissions and mitigate the increasing energy crisis. However, developing photocatalysts with excellent performance still remains a great challenge in this field. Herein Co,Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1Cu1/NC) were fabricated through the pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) with Cu(NO3)2 adsorbed inside the cavities and CoTBPP decorated over the surface of ZIF. Spherical aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements disclose the dual-metal single-atomic nature of Co1Cu1/NC consisting of atomically dispersed Co-Cu pair sites on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure analysis reveals the tetra-N-coordinated nature of each metal in Co1Cu1/NC (N2-Co-N2-Cu-N2). For the purpose of comparative study, Co,N-and Cu,N-codoped carbon nanoparticles (Co1/NC and Cu1/NC) also with single atomic site nature have been fabricated following the same route. The as-prepared Co1Cu1/NC exhibits highly effective photocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction with a considerably high CO-generating yield of 22.46 mmol g-1 and a CO selectivity of 83.4% after 2 h of visible-light irradiation. Experimental characterizations and in particular theoretical calculations disclose the close association of the remarkable CO2RR catalytic activity of Co1Cu1/NC with the synergetic effect of the Co-Cu atomic-pair sites, which facilitate the conversion of CO2 to CO via lowering the energy barrier for the formation of the *COOH intermediate. This work paves a new avenue for the rational design and construction of atomic-pair photocatalysts with boosted performance.

Abstract:The inside cover shows a strategy to fabricate Cu2O/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) junction photocatalysts for the photoreduction of CO2 into solar fuel. Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into HCOOH is a highly anticipated way to address the long-term demand of energy supply. Herein, we report the fabrication of uniform core-shell nanoparticles composed of a Cu core encapsulated by a Cu2O shell by thermal treatment of a Cu-MOF precursor. Impressively, Cu@Cu2O/C-350 exhibited the catalytic activity in CO2 reduction to HCOOH, attaining a HCOOH production rate of 31 μg/h without any additives at room temperature. Further mechanistic studies indicated that surface Cu2O shell was acted as the active sites for the adsorption and activation of CO2.

Abstract:The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 is a promising strategy for converting this greenhouse gas into valuable products. However, developing highly efficient photocatalysts remains a challenging task. In this study, we investigated the properties of Cu4 and Cu5-doped g-C3N4 photocatalysts using density functional theory. Our findings revealed that Cu clusters can form an Ohmic contact with C3N4, promoting the separation and transfer of photo-generated electrons and holes, and reducing the reaction barrier. We optimized the adsorption models of gas-phase intermediate molecules and identified the most stable configuration with the lowest adsorption energy. The results indicated that Cu clusters and C3N4 can work synergistically to provide active sites for the adsorption of gas-phase molecules, revealing the mechanism for lowering the activation energy. Cu4-doped C3N4 was identified as the most promising photocatalyst through the comparison of the Gibbs free energy change in CO2 reduction and the HER energy barrier. Further research found that the co-adsorption of *CO on the Cu clusters effectively suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction, providing insights into the potential mechanism underlying the high selectivity of Cu clusters for the production of C2 products through CO2 reduction.

Abstract:TiO2 has been extensively used for CO2 reduction while the low carrier transport efficiency still impedes its practical application. In the present work, Cu/Cu+ fabricated Ti3+/TiO2 (Cu/Cu+@TiO2) was prepared via in situ ionothermal method and acts as a highly selective catalyst for photocatalytic reduction of CO2. Abundant Cu+-O valences were formed inside the lattice of TiO2 to enhance the carrier transport efficiency, and the metal copper outside on the surface are the active sites for CO2 reduction. The synergistic effect between outside Cu and inside Cu+ in Cu/Cu+@TiO2 has dramatically increased the electron carrier density. More importantly, the photogenerated electrons in Cu/Cu+@TiO2 can be 100 % utilized for CO2 reduction aided by the hydroxyl group on the surface and no H2 evolution was detected. Density functional theory calculations also confirm the role of Cu+-O bridge with a higher charge density at the Cu site in the lattice of TiO2. This work will provide new insights into increasing photocatalytic efficiency for CO2 reduction by traditional photocatalyst like TiO2.

Study on nanoporous CuBi2O4 photocathode coated with TiO2 overlayer for photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction

Abstract:Investigation on the electrode/electrolyte interface of nanotextured electrodes is very challenging but critical to understand the CO2 reduction reactions. Here we present that the nanoporous CuBi2O4 photocathodes coated by a TiO2 overlayer with gradient thickness show improved CO2 reduction performance compared to pristine CuBi2O4. Different activity and selectivity for photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction are observed when the thickness of TiO2 coating layer is set at two extreme values, i.e., less and longer than its Debye length. The CuBi2O4 with a thin TiO2 layer shows higher CO/H2 yield ratio, and the one with a thick layer exhibits lower CO/H2 ratio but higher yield for both CO and H2. All these are elucidated based on the results of Mott-Schottky plots, photocurrent response and SEM/TEM images. Results indicate that the TiO2 overlayer on CuBi2O4 is in favor of the generation and separation of electron/hole pairs, and thus facilitate CO and H2 production, while the nanoporous structure and the nonuniform TiO2 overlayer on CuBi2O4 have a great impact on mass transport, local pH, and exposed active sites and, thereby, on the CO production selectivity.

Revealing the Effect of Electronic Configuration in Cux Species on CO2 Photoreduction Characteristic Products

Abstract:The Cu0/Cu+ species in the coexistence state of Cu0/Cu+/Cu2+ can optimize the energy band structure, photocurrent stability and provide a kinetic basis for the active surface catalytic reaction process that requires the conversion of multiple electrons into C2 products. Meanwhile, the Cu2+ species in the coexistence state of Cu0/Cu+/Cu2+ are able to regulate the electronic behavior and the choice of the catalytic pathway, enabling the transitions between CO2‐to‐C2H6 and CO2‐to‐C2H4. As of the present time, the in‐depth study of the structure‐activity relationship between electronic configuration and CO2 photoreduction performance is often overlooked. Herein, a series of Cux species modified CeO2 nanodots are constructed in situ by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) to achieve an efficient photocatalytic CO2‐to‐C2 conversion with an electron utilization of up to 142.5 μmol g−1. Through an in‐depth study of the electronic behavior and catalytic pathways, it is found that the Cu0/Cu+ species in the coexistence state of Cu0/Cu+/Cu2+ can optimize the energy band structure, photocurrent stability, and provide a kinetic basis for the active surface catalytic reaction process that requires the conversion of multiple electrons into C2 products, which ultimately enhances the CO2‐to‐C2H6 photoreduction by 3.8‐fold and that for CO2‐to‐C2H4 photoreduction by 5.2‐fold. Besides, the Cu2+ species in the coexistence state of Cu0/Cu+/Cu2+ are able to regulate the electronic behavior and the choice of the catalytic pathway, enabling the transitions between CO2‐to‐C2H6 and CO2‐to‐C2H4. This work indicates that electronic configuration optimization is an effective strategy to significantly enhance the CO2 photoreduction performance and provides new ideas for the design and synthesis of high‐performance heterostructure photocatalysts.

Z-scheme ZnIn2S4/CuxO Heterostructure on Flexible Substrate for Efficient Photothermal Catalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:The ZnIn2S4 2 S 4 nanosheets were successfully synthesized on the surface of compacted stainless steel mesh using a simple solvothermal method, and further modified with CuxO x O nanoparticles to form ZnIn2S4/CuxO 2 S 4 /Cu x O heterojunction photocatalyst via a wet chemistry approach. These photocatalysts were then utilized for photothermal catalytic CO2 2 reduction under full spectrum solar light. The experimental results demonstrated that the deposition of the photocatalyst on the flexible substrate effectively prevented the aggregation of ZnIn2S4 2 S 4 nanosheets. The incorporation of CuxO x O nanoparticles enhanced the specific surface area of the photocatalyst, and created a Zscheme heterojunction with ZnIn2S4 2 S 4 to improve the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons. It was noteworthy that the dark red CuxO x O exhibited a full spectrum response and excellent photothermal effect, thereby facilitating carrier migration and reducing CO2 2 catalytic reaction barriers. Consequently, the optimized ZnIn2S4/ 2 S 4 / CuxO x O exhibited significantly enhanced CO2 2 to CO yield of 1515.8 mu mol m-2h- h- 1 and CH4 4 yield of 1579.4 mu mol m2 h- 1 , which was about 7.5 and 7.6 times higher than those achieved by pure ZnIn2S4, 2 S 4 , respectively. Furthermore, this study provided detailed insights into the mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 2 reduction over composite material as well as valuable guidance for designing immobilized photocatalysts with high activity for CO2 2 reduction.

Abstract:A novel double-shelled CuS/CdIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst was rationally designed using CdIn 2 S 4 sheets in situ grown upon the exterior of hollow CuS nanocubes. The unique hierarchical hollow structure of CuS/CdIn 2 S 4 provides numerous active sites and reduces carrier diffusion length. Surface sulfur vacancies mitigate the detachment of the intermediate, which is favorable for a multi-electron reaction path such as that in the production of CH 4 . Meanwhile, a suitable band-structure alignment between p-type CuS and n-type CdIn 2 S 4 leads to the formation of a type-II heterostructure, thus resulting in effective light-harvesting and spatial separation of electron–hole pairs for CO 2 photoreduction. The CuS/CdIn 2 S 4 heterostructure exhibits significantly enhanced performance with a boosted CO yield of 40.73 μmol g −1 h −1 as well as a noticeably improved CH 4 selectivity (36.5%, 23.41 μmol g −1 h −1 ). This work introduces innovative concepts in designing photocatalytic systems with unique morphologies and rational band structures, promising advancements in CO 2 photoreduction at reduced costs.
