Abstract:Clean technologies and infrastructure for our low-carbon, green future carry intense mineral demands. The ambition remains to recycle and reuse as much as we can; however, newly mined resources will be required in the near term despite the massive improvements in the reuse and recycling of existing end-of-use products and wastes. Growth trends suggest that mining will still play a role after 2050 since the demand for metals will increase as the developing world moves toward a per capita usage of materials comparable to that of the developed world. There are sufficient geological resources to deliver the required mineral commodities, but the need to mine must be balanced with the requirement to tackle environmental and social governance issues and to deliver sustainable development goals, ensuring that outcomes are beneficial for both the people and planet. Currently, the lead time to develop new mines following discovery is around 16 years, and this needs to be reduced. New approaches to designing and evaluating mining projects embracing social, biodiversity, and life cycle analysis aspects are pivotal. New frontiers for supply should include neglected mined wastes with recoverable components and unconventional new deposits. New processing technologies that involve less invasive, lower energy and cleaner methodologies need to be explored, and developing such methodologies will benefit from using nature-based solutions like bioprocessing for both mineral recovery and for developing sustainable landscapes post mining. Part of the new ambition would be to seek opportunities for more regulated mining areas in our own backyard, thinking particularly of old mineral districts of Europe, rather than relying on sources with potentially and less controllable, fragile, and problematic supply chains. The current debate about the potential of mining our deep ocean, as an alternative to terrestrial sources needs to be resolved and based on a broader analysis; we can then make balanced societal choices about the metal and mineral supply from the different sources that will be able to deliver the green economy while providing a net-positive deal for the planet and its people.

Abstract:The increasing degradation of the environment and changing social values are driving the transition to sustainability. Elimination of waste and reduction of energy consumption reduce both the demand for new mineral resources and quantities of potentially harmful wastes and contribute to the transition to sustainability. These challenges provide opportunities for the application of mineral processing and extractive metallurgical principles to add value to wastes/co-products, reduce energy consumption and recycle complex and novel materials. This paper discusses the interpretations of sustainability and relates them to the minerals industry. Four strategies for minimizing wastes and energy – the application of cleaner production principles, re-engineering of processes, utilizing wastes as co-products, and closing the production loop through industrial ecology principles – are discussed and examples are given to illustrate the application of mineral processing and extractive metallurgical principles to these strategies.

Abstract:The incremental amount of needed Raw Materials (RM) and Critical Raw Materials (CRM) cannot be totally supplied by recycling activities, and mining activities are growing more and more at global level, requiring more modern and efficient technologies and mining techniques to guarantee a sustainable mining. To reach a sustainable mining, an interdisciplinary approach, which consists in considering economic, environmental and social impacts together with new processes implementation, is needed. The focus of the present research is the exploitation of extractive waste (EW) to recover RM and CRM, considering, the technological and economical factors, together with the environmental impacts, associated to EW quarrying and dressing activities.The present study, based on a case history from Northern Italy (Montorfano and Baveno granite quarrying area), was intended to validate the presented interdisciplinary approach for evaluating economic and environmental impacts associated to EW facility exploitation (from granite EW facility to products for ceramic industry and by products for building industry and infrastructures). Two different surveys were carried out: in 2009 and 2016, investigating four different EW facilities (Braghini, Ciana-Tane Pilastretto,Sengio, and Montorfano).A shared methodology was applied to determine EW characteristics (geochemical, petrographycal and mineralogical), EW facility volume (geophysical&#160; and topographic and morphologic 3D characterisation) and potential exploitable products, by-products (and CRM). Meanwhile, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was applied to determine environmental impacts associated to extraction and processing phases.The sampled materials from the EW facilities, sampled in 2009 and 2016, show highly homogeneous geochemical features (Al2O3: 13.02-14.65; Fe2O3: 1.40-2.41, TiO2: 0.10-0.26, CaO: 0.54-2.01, MgO: 0.14-0.45, K2O: 4.49-5.18, Na2O: 3.08-3.64) for major elements. The alkalies (K2O+Na2O) and Fe2O3tot content of all samples are extremely important for the feldspar (l.s.) industry, and &#160;the samples obtained after magnetic separation show a decrement of Fe2O3 passing from > 1.4% (not good for ceramic industry) to < 0.2% (good for ceramic industry). Moreover, a wider range of geochemical analysis was carried out in 2016 and an interesting fractionation in the treatment process is observed when considering the REE concentration: all samples of the magnetic fraction are much more concentrated than in the feeding material and can be up to one order of magnitude more concentrated than in the upgraded amagnetic portion. The total volume of dumps was estimated in about 2.1 Mm3.The LCA reports that main environmental loads were due to the dressing plant, including climate change and freshwater eutrophication ones. Despite landfilling shows minor impacts, it has significant impact in terrestrial eco-toxicity. While climate change indicators show significantly higher loads than savings, savings and loads in freshwater eutrophication indicator are balanced. The avoided phosphate and phosphorous release to water results in high ratio of savings in freshwater eutrophication. As for environmental impacts, the SRM recovery activities are favourable for the environment compared to the use of primary sources.The presented interdisciplinary approach is in line with the will of going towards a sustainable mining, which has to consider, together with economic and environmental factors, also social impacts and risks mitigation instruments.

Abstract:The transition to a clean energy economy in an effort to mitigate climate change has brought the need for intense mining exploration of a critical class of minerals, previously mined and used at a fraction of what is required today and for the upcoming decades. For some common metals, such as copper, major deficits are forecasted to 2030, and for some less common, such as rare earths, mined quantities have currently increased 32 times relative to the mid-1950s, and are expected to increase sevenfold from current levels by 2040. This situation is expected to become more severe given the long timespan needed for exploration of new sites, the declining ore grade of existing mines, the geographical distribution of these minerals, and the environmental degradation caused by mining and mineral processing activities. It becomes, hence critical to vastly improve existing mining operations, reduce waste volumes and fresh water use, reduce environmental impacts, and recover increased quantities of minerals from mine tailings, as well as from the recycling of post-production products. The current article focuses on copper and rare earths to expound on their exploitation issues, their processes, the sustainable utilization of mineral waste and tailings, and their recovery from end-of-life consumer and industrial items.

Abstract:The increase in world population and the expected global development of the world economy after the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to impose unprecedented pressure on securing the supply of minerals. The World Bank report “Minerals for Climate Action: The Mineral Intensity of the Clean Energy Transition” finds that the production of minerals such as graphite, lithium and cobalt could increase by nearly 500% by 2050, to meet the growing demand for clean energy technologies. Many of these critical minerals are found in the deep seabed, the only place on earth where mineral resources have not been exploited yet. There is a strong need to ensure that these critical minerals will be extracted in a sustainable way, verifying the protection of the marine environment and biodiversity. The regulatory, financial and engineering challenges for deep sea mining are considerable, but in fact are not considered prohibitive, taking into account the remarkable achievements in recent years. On the other hand, it is evident that the existing modern ecosystem-based management approaches cannot be applied to deep sea areas without detailed knowledge of the individual species and ecosystems; most of the species living on the deep-sea floor remain unknown up until now. There is a need for the development of a new environmental management approach for each specific area. The successful procedures of Natura 2000 can be followed, and the necessary information on the existing environmental conditions has to be collected separately at every site for a minimum period of 10–15 years. Natura 2000, the world’s largest ecological network united under a single, uniform regulatory framework, is regarded as one of the conservations success stories in the global effort to protect biodiversity.

Abstract:Mineral resources, the source of primary metals, play a key role in developing the society. Integrating sustainability in mineral resources management is critical to sustainably sourcing and producing metals and achieving sustainable development goals. This requires foremost a clarification of how mineral resources are consumed in society including both the value chain and the supply chain of the finished metal products. The consumption of mineral resources, as well as the environmental, societal and economic impacts associated with their production, can be assessed by different methodologies including criticality analysis, materials flow analysis, and life cycle assessment, which emphasize different aspects of sustainability. To address sustainability in mineral resources, the discrete activities of mining, processing, manufacturing, distribution, and recycling and reusing will need to be integrated and each should adopt a variety of initiatives.

Abstract:A transition to a more sustainable human–nature system is inextricably linked to raw materials production, if economic growth is to be maintained or increased by the emergence of new, energy- and metal-hungry technology innovation clusters. The dependence on mined raw materials is a wicked problem for societies vulnerable to negative ecological impacts and for global power bases wanting to secure access to an increasing array of feedstocks. We interrogate the issue of what constitutes a sustainable metal from a triple perspective: (i) the characteristics of ore deposits and the primary extractive operations that supply critical raw materials; (ii) the impediments for complex and interacting supply chains to maintain critical (and other) metals in use; and (iii) the lack of transparency in supply chains that makes it challenging for customers to avoid resources that have been produced by unsustainable and poor practices. We examine existing and emerging structures for resource management to explain the limits to the circular economy and what constitutes a meaningful systemic structure for primary production by responsible mining. We call for the inclusion of a standardized statement of the ‘natural capital’ embodied in R&D for technological materials as a means to create transparency about what constitutes a sustainable metal. Abstract:Changes in our world mean that Europe is facing many pressing demographic and geographic challenges. A growing, aging population coupled with changes in population density are causing environmental stresses to our ecosystem that when coupled with climate change create challenges in sustainable food production and the use of natural raw materials. At the same time, the Fridays For Future Movement is calling out loudly for Future and Climate Justice, CO2-neutrality, resource efficiency and (almost) closed material loops. These issues are already expressed by the 17 UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) and widely shared through the Paris Agreement. The European Union and the National Governments have launched many frameworks and action plans such as the European Green Deal to achieve a carbon-neutral economy and clean mobility for example. Certainly, any of those transformations and any infrastructure developments will require sustainably produced mineral raw materials to deliver key enabling technologies and to meet the needs of the Industry 4.0 society. Moreover, improvements in buildings such as energy efficiency through insulation technologies, other infrastructure developments and the Europe&#8217;s cultural heritage preservation add to the increasing demand in mineral resources.The demand for ever increasing volumes of mineral resources cannot be met exclusively by recycling and thermodynamics does not allow for fully closed material loops. Hence, a sustainable supply of raw materials will always require accessibility to mineral deposits and productive mines while the effects of competing land-use issues and NIMBY activism are increasing too.The realisation of a low-carbon society and a self-concept of reliable sourcing increasingly require short feed strokes and local sourcing. A good understanding of mineral systems, mining sites, and remaining resources of historical sites will stay of utmost importance. The four GeoERA Raw Materials projects* EuroLITHOS, FRAME, MINDeSEA and Mintell4EU share expertise, information and focus on European on-shore and off-shore resources.EuroLITHOS gives specific attention to ornamental stone resources for which Europe has a long tradition in mining, processing and usage.FRAME designed to research the Strategic and Critical Raw Materials (SCRM) in Europe to gain new insights into reserves and resources taking into account new technologies and developments.MINDeSEA focuses on exploration and investigation of SCRM from seafloor mineral deposits in European waters. Identifying areas for responsible resourcing and information on management and Marine Spatial Planning in European Seas are in its core of action.Mintell4EU focuses on harmonizing data, utilizes the UNFC, providing spatial data and thematic maps. Updated electronic Minerals Yearbook and Europe&#8217;s Minerals Inventory are among the products.Foresight and forecasting of the raw material supply potential of Europe will become more reliable through increased data quality and harmonization. Workshops and training courses will add to ensure an improvement of the European Raw Materials Knowledge Base. A Sustainable Approach to Transforming Mining Waste into Value-Added Products

Abstract:Mine waste is usually considered worthless in the subsequent stages of mineral production; but it will become valuable in the future and will be needed for the ever-increasing demand of society. Over several decades, large-scale extraction of minerals to cater ever-increasing demand for the growing global population has generated enormous mining wastes, polluted water bodies and air thereby leaving a deleterious effect on the environment. Each year, several billion tons of solid waste is generated worldwide by mining industries as mine byproducts during all types of mining activities, particularly drilling, blasting, and transportation for the extraction of the desired products. The mining wastes are generated at every step of activity, depending on the type of mining method, type of ore, the geological set-up and processing techniques adopted. It is estimated that about a million ton of ore and waste is generated from the large-scale mines per day, and a couple of thousand tons generates from small-scale mines per day. As per an estimate, mining of 1 ton of coal generates approximately 0.4 tons of waste and tailings. Similarly, the production of 1 ton of copper generates approximately 110 tons of waste and 200 tons removal of overburden. Besides, over 500 million tons of mill tailings is generated per year from various ore concentration processes (e.g., lead-zinc, copper, iron). Therefore, the adoption of optimal waste management strategies is sorely needed for the efficient recycling of large quantities of mining waste products generated each year from hundreds of mining operations across the country (or worldwide). In this study, we present a critical overview of solid wastes in mining and the optimal waste management strategy including legal remedies and economic constraints. A holistic approach to end-to-end mining processes to understand and frame the waste management strategy is needed for reducing the risk and maximizing the resource potential.

Abstract:Mining, mineral processing and metal extraction are undergoing a profound transformation as a result of two revolutions in the making—one, advances in digital technologies and the other, availability of electricity from renewable energy sources at affordable prices. The demand for new metals and materials has also arisen concurrently. This necessitates discovery of new ore deposits, mining and mineral processing of newly discovered ore deposits, and extraction of metals for meeting the projected requirements of the industry and the society. Some of the innovations that impacted the industry, for example, electric and autonomous equipment for drilling, haulage and processing of ores, drones for monitoring and control of operations, space/deep-sea/urban mining and molten salt electrolysis for metal extraction are discussed here. The transformative potential of integrated digital platforms such as TCS PREMAP and TCS PEACOCK is illustrated with examples where the platforms have been gainfully deployed in operating plants and creating values for the industry.

Abstract:Advanced technologies are inherently dependent on critical minerals and their related metals. The mining extraction of these critical minerals leads to significant social and environmental impacts that extend beyond the regions where those advanced technologies are ultimately used. This study explores the global socio-environmental challenges arising from the European Climate Law's aim for net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2050, focusing on the EU's consumption of critical minerals. Developing a novel methodology based on Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) model, enriched with detailed mineral production data from specific ore-to-mineral ratios and socio-environmental information, this work assesses the impacts of the EU's mineral consumption within its energy transition framework. This innovative approach extends beyond ore extraction to encompass all stages of the supply chain. Key findings indicate that the continental Europe accounts for 60% of the EU's ore extraction footprint, yet only 35% of the mineral footprint for the 34 analyzed critical minerals. In contrast, Africa's and South America's shares are 12% and 29%, respectively, markedly higher than attributed in previous studies. The study highlights challenges in securing these minerals, including potential usage conflicts and increased mining in water-scarce basins within Australia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and Chile, hence exacerbating environmental and community issues. Furthermore, the research suggests that achieving the EU's climate goals could expose between 15 and 89,000 African miners to increased modern slavery vulnerabilities by 2040. However, adherence to the EU Green Deal principles could mitigate these risks and recommendations are proposed, including diversifying mineral supply chains, establishing partnerships with countries that maintain high socio-environmental standards, and adopting circular economy paradigms and innovative solutions. This study advocates its new methodological development to build comprehensive strategies balancing climate goals with the global socio-environmental effects of critical mineral extraction, especially in developing countries.

Abstract:The mining industry has long grappled with the digital transformation challenge, partly due to its historically conservative nature. Much of the discourse revolved around selecting appropriate mining methodologies like striking a balance between ore and waste selectivity, optimization of implementation scales, reducing costs, and adaptation of suitable metallurgical extraction methods. However, the concept of the fourth industrial revolution emerged as a critical factor in determining sustainability, success, and competitiveness within the contemporary mining sector. Therefore, this research aims to provide an overview of the digital transformation within the minerals and extractive industry, specifically focusing on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The current research explored geological factors that impact mining selectivity and technologies designed for waste rejection. Environmentally friendly approaches, such as using tunnel-boring machinery or non-explosive techniques, aid in ore fragmentation explored in this research that help reduce energy consumption during mineral processing and enhance mineral recovery. Additionally, this research deeps dive into the adoption of low-water-consumption automated ore-waste sorting systems. In this regard, selective mining leaching through the percolation of coarse particles offers an alternative approach for processing complex low-grade ores. Moreover, the assessment of new technological frontiers in the mineral sector has been done in the current research. The amalgamation of these processes promises a substantial reduction in mining waste. Furthermore, this research concludes that various factors such as orebody characteristics, the selection of mining techniques and equipment, the intended implementation scales, adherence to circular strategies, ore extraction efficiency, and socio-economic considerations influence the development and implementation of novel technologies and methods in the mining industry.

Abstract:Mining resources have played a leading role in the development of humanity, and the demand for these raw materials is expected to increase in the foreseeable future. In addition, new technologies also require the extraction of new critical materials. These trends pose various challenges as there is a limited supply of natural resources, and standard mining and mineral processing practices are associated with significant environmental impacts, such as waste generation, energy and water consumption, and CO2 emissions. The circular economy (CE) has recently gained attention as a model to address such a complex scenario. This work analyzes the current efforts toward the application of CE in mineral processing. Although advances have been made, this review shows that the most significant material flows and environmental impacts occur near the production sites, which currently limits the closure of loops. Besides, mining industries are conservative regarding the adoption of new technologies or processing strategies, which is another hindrance to the implementation of the CE. Thus, and with few exceptions, while some sectors are already facing advanced stages of CE (namely, CE 3.0), the mineral processing field struggles to advance from the basic CE requirements (i.e, CE 1.0 to CE 2.0).

Abstract:A number of primary ores such as phosphate rock, gold-, copper- and rare earth ores contain considerable amounts of accompanying uranium and other critical materials. Energy neutral mineral processing is the extraction of unconventional uranium during primary ore processing to use it, after enrichment and fuel production, to generate greenhouse gas lean energy in a nuclear reactor. Energy neutrality is reached if the energy produced from the extracted uranium is equal to or larger than the energy required for primary ore processing, uranium extraction, -conversion, -enrichment and -fuel production. This work discusses the sustainability of energy neutral mineral processing and provides an overview of the current progress of a multinational research project on that topic conducted under the umbrella of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
