Abstract:Explicit representations for the Hermite interpolation and their derivatives of any order are provided. Furthermore, suppose that the interpolated function f has continuous derivatives of sufficiently high order on some sufficiently small neighborhood of a given point x and any group of nodes are also given on the neighborhood. If the derivatives of any order of the Hermite interpolation polynomial of f at the point x are applied to approximating the corresponding derivatives of the function f ( x ), the asymptotic representations for the remainder are presented.

Abstract:As usual, denote by KW r [ a , b ] the Sobolev class consisting of every function whose ( r − 1)th derivative is absolutely continuous on the interval [ a, b ] and r th derivative is bounded by K a.e. in [ a , b ]. For a function f ∈ KW r [ a, b ], its values and derivatives up to r − 1 order at a set of nodes x are known. These values are said to be the given Hermite information. This work reports the results on the best quadrature based on the given Hermite information for the class KW r [ a, b ]. Existence and concrete construction issue of the best quadrature are settled down by a perfect spline interpolation. It turns out that the best quadrature depends on a system of algebraic equations satisfied by a set of free nodes of the interpolation perfect spline. From our another new result, it is shown that the system can be converted in a closed form to two single-variable polynomial equations, each being of degree approximately r /2. As a by-product, the best interpolation formula for the class KW r [ a, b ] is also obtained.

Abstract:Synopsis We consider interpolation by piecewise polynomials, where the interpolation conditions are on certain derivatives of the function at certain points, specified by a finite incidence matrix E . Similarly the allowable discontinuities of the piecewise polynomials are specified by a finite incidence matrix F . We first find necessary conditions on ( E , F ) for the problem to be poised, that is to have a unique solution for any given data. The main result gives sufficient conditions on ( E , F ) for the problem to be poised, generalising a well-known result of Atkinson and Sharma. To this end we prove some results involving estimates of the numbers of zeros of the relevant piecewise polynomials.

Abstract:This paper deals with an algorithmic approach to the Hermite-Birkhoff-(HB)interpolation problem. More precisely, we will show that Newton's classical formula for interpolation by algebraic polynomials naturally extends to HB-interpolation. Hence almost all reasons which make Newton's method superior to just solving the system of linear equations associated with the interpolation problem may be repeated. Let us emphasize just two: Newton's formula being a biorthogonal expansion has a well known permanence property when the system of interpolation conditions grows. From Newton's formula by an elementary argument due to Cauchy an important representation of the interpolation error can be derived. All of the above extends to HB-interpolation with respect to canonical complete Čebyšev-systems and naturally associated differential operators [7]. A numerical example is given.

Abstract:In a recent paper by Hack (1987), certain bivariate polynomial Hermite-Birkhoff interpolation problems are considered and sufficient conditions for unique solvability are obtained by applying a general result on interpolation with tensor-functionals. In this paper, using a matricial approach and with the guideline of a result due to Stenger (1968), these conditions are shown to be also necessary and expressed in terms of the unisolvence of certain univariate interpolation problems. The results are valid not only for the polynomial case but also for interpolation with bivariate functions built from univariate extended complete Tchebycheff (ECT) systems.

Abstract:We consider a specific scheme of multivariate Birkhoff polynomial interpolation. Our samples are derivatives of various orders kj at fixed points vj along fixed straight lines through vj in directions uj, under the following assumption: the total number of sampled derivatives of order k,k=0,1,… is equal to the dimension of the space homogeneous polynomials of degree k. We show that this scheme is regular for general directions. Specifically this scheme is regular independent of the position of the interpolation nodes. In the planar case, we show that this scheme is regular for distinct directions.Next we prove a “Birkhoff-Remez” inequality for our sampling scheme extended to larger sampling sets. It bounds the norm of the interpolation polynomial through the norm of the samples, in terms of the geometry of the sampling set.

On the numerology of trigonometric polynomials

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract:The subject of this book is Lagrange, Hermite and Birkhoff (lacunary Hermite) interpolation by multivariate algebraic polynomials. It unifies and extends a new algorithmic approach to this subject which was introduced and developed by G.G. Lorentz and the author. One particularly interesting feature of this algorithmic approach is that it obviates the necessity of finding a formula for the Vandermonde determinant of a multivariate interpolation in order to determine its regularity (which formulas are practically unknown anyways) by determining the regularity through simple geometric manipulations in the Euclidean space. Although interpolation is a classical problem, it is surprising how little is known about its basic properties in the multivariate case. The book therefore starts by exploring its fundamental properties and its limitations. The main part of the book is devoted to a complete and detailed elaboration of the new technique. A chapter with an extensive selection of finite elements follows as well as a chapter with formulas for Vandermonde determinants. Finally, the technique is applied to non-standard interpolations. The book is principally oriented to specialists in the field. However, since all the proofs are presented in full detail and since examples are profuse, a wider audience with a basic knowledge of analysis and linear algebra will draw profit from it. Indeed, the fundamental nature of multivariate nature of multivariate interpolation is reflected by the fact that readers coming from the disparate fields of algebraic geometry (singularities of surfaces), of finite elements and of CAGD will also all find useful information here.

On Multivariate Birkhoff Rational Interpolation

Abstract:Multivariate Birkhoff rational interpolation is the most general algebraic interpolation scheme. There is few literature on this problem due to the complex structure of the rational function and the non-continuity of the orders of the derivative interpolating conditions. In this paper, by adding the lacking derivative conditions and setting the artificial interpolating values as undetermined parameters, we propose a parametric linearization method to convert the problem of finding a multivariate Birkhoff rational interpolation function into solving a parametric polynomial system in which the coefficients in the numerator and denominator are the unknowns. We use the parametric triangular decomposition to solve the system and prove the solution provides a Birkhoff rational interpolation function as long as there exist proper parameters such that the denominator does not vanish at each interpolating point. The algorithm is implemented in Maple 15.
Hermite-type interpolation in terms of exponential polynomials

Abstract:Motivated by classical results of approximation theory, we define an Hermite-type interpolation in terms of $n$-dimensional subspaces of the space of $n$ times continuously differentiable functions. In the main result of this paper, we establish an error term in integral form for this interpolation in the case when the $n$-dimensional subspace is the kernel of an $n$th order linear differential operator with constant coefficients. Several corollaries are deduced illustrating the applicability of this result.

Abstract:A class of cardinal basis functions is proposed in order to achieve a generalization to Banach spaces of Hermite-Birkhoff interpolation on arbitrarily distributed data. First, a constructive characterization of the class of cardinal basis functions is given. Then, the interpolation problem is solved by using a suitable combination of such functions and Taylor-Fréchet expansions. The performance of the obtained interpolants is improved by applying a localizing scheme, and the corresponding approximation error is estimated. A noteworthy case in Hilbert spaces and a numerical test comparing the Hermite-Birkhoff and Lagrange interpolants complete the presentation.

Therefore, such formulas belong to the class of algebraic interpolations. In this paper, we introduce a special new type of multivariate Birkhoff interpolation and present a Newton paradigm for it.
