Abstract:This paper provides a novel method towards imparting agility to the anguilliform robotic fish. The anguilliform robotic fishes are idealized to the real fishes using a series of N connected links to be closely approximated to their biological counterparts. To generate robot motion, torque are applied to the N-1 joints connecting any two consecutive links. There is high amount of interest among researchers in the development of robotic fishes which can specifically mimic anguilliform real fishes because of their high amounts of agility and ability to produce complex gaits. In this paper, we provide an innovative approach towards imparting similar agility into the robotic fishes. Later, we also perform simulations to validate the efficiency of this newly developed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel biomimetic learning approach for a Carangiform robotic fish to learn swimming locomotion. A video recording system is first set up to capture real fish behaviors that are used as the training samples. Three basic Carangiform swimming motion patterns, “cruise”, “cruise in turning” and “C sharp turn”, are extracted from robotic perspective. A general internal model (GIM) is adopted as a universal central pattern generator (CPG). Based on the universal function approximation ability and the temporal/spatial scalabilities of GIM, biomimetic learning is performed such that the robotic fish is able to learn to generate the same or similar fish swimming motion patterns. The three swimming motion patterns are implemented on a multi-joint robotic fish. The effectiveness of the biomimetic learning approach is verified through experiment results.
The Silverjaw Minnow, Ericymba buccata: An Extraordinary Lateral Line System and Its Contribution to Prey Detection

Abstract:Fishes use their mechanosensory lateral line system to detect local water flows in different behavioral contexts, including the detection of prey. The lateral line system is comprised of neuromast receptor organs on the skin (superficial neuromasts) and within bony canals (canal neuromasts). Most fishes have one cranial lateral line canal phenotype, but the silverjaw minnow (Ericymba buccata) has two: narrow canals dorsal and caudal to the eye and widened canals ventral to the eye and along the mandible. The ventrally directed widened lateral line canals have been hypothesized to be an adaptation for detection of their benthic prey. Multiple morphological methods were used to describe the narrow and widened canals and canal neuromasts in detail. The primary distribution of hundreds of superficial neuromasts and taste buds ventral to the eye and on the mandible (described here for the first time) suggests additional sensory investment for detecting flow and chemical stimuli emanating from benthic prey. The hypothesis that the lateral line system mediates prey localization was tested by measuring five parameters in behavioral trials in which the combination of sensory modalities available to fish was manipulated (four experimental treatments). Fish detected and localized prey regardless of available sensory modalities and they were able to detect prey in the dark in the absence of lateral line input (lateral line ablation with neomycin sulfate) revealing that chemoreception was sufficient to mediate benthic prey detection, localization, and consumption. However, elimination of lateral line input resulted in a change in the angle of approach to live (mobile) prey even when visual input was available, suggesting that mechanosensory input contributes to the successful detection and localization of prey. The results of this study demonstrate that the extraordinary lateral line canal system of the silverjaw minnow, in addition to the large number of superficial neuromasts, and the presence of numerous extraoral taste buds, likely represent adaptations for multimodal integration of sensory inputs contributing to foraging behavior in this species. The morphological and behavioral results of this study both suggest that this species would be an excellent model for future comparative structural and functional studies of sensory systems in fishes.

Abstract:The air-water of the planet’s water bodies, such as ponds, lakes and streams, presents an uncertain ecological niche with predatory threats from above and below. As move across the water surface in small ponds, they face potential injury from attacks by birds, fish, and underwater invertebrates. Thus, our study investigates the effects of losing individual or pairs of tarsi on the ability to walk on water. Removal of both hind tarsi causes . to rock their bodies (yaw) while running across the water surface at ±19°, compared to ±7° in non-ablated specimens. This increase in yaw, resulting from the removal of hind tarsi, indicates that use their hind legs as ‘rudders’ to regulate yaw, originating from the contralateral middle legs’ strokes on the water’s surface through an alternating tripod gait. Ablation of the ipsilateral middle and hind tarsi disrupts directionality, making turn in the direction of their intact limbs. This loss of directionality does not occur with the removal of contralateral middle and hind tarsi. However, lose their ability to use the alternating tripod gait to walk for water walking on the day of contralateral ablation. Remarkably, by the next day adapt and regain the ability to walk on water using the alternating tripod gait. Our findings elucidate the specialized leg dynamics within the alternating tripod gait of ., and their adaptability to tarsal loss. This research could guide the development and design strategies of small, adaptive, and resilient micro-robots that can adapt to controller malfunction or actuator damage for walking on water and terrestrial surfaces.

Abstract:Fish have evolved diverse and robust locomotive strategies to swim efficiently in complex fluid environments. However, we know little, if anything, about how these strategies can be achieved. Although most studies suggest that fish rely on the lateral line system to sense local flow and optimise body undulation, recent work has shown that fish are still able to gain benefits from the local flow even with the lateral line impaired. In this paper, we hypothesise that fish can save energy by extracting vortices shed from their neighbours using only simple proprioceptive sensing with the caudal fin. We tested this hypothesis on both computational and robotic fish by synthesising a central pattern generator (CPG) with feedback, proprioceptive sensing, and reinforcement learning. The CPG controller adjusts the body undulation after receiving feedback from the proprioceptive sensing signal, decoded via reinforcement learning. In our study, we consider potential proprioceptive sensing inputs to consist of low-dimensional signals (e.g. perceived forces) detected from the flow. With simulations on a computational robot and experiments on a robotic fish swimming in unknown dynamic flows, we show that the simple proprioceptive sensing is sufficient to optimise the body undulation to save energy, without any input from the lateral line. Our results reveal a new sensory-motor mechanism in schooling fish and shed new light on the strategy of control for robotic fish swimming in complex flows with high efficiency.

Abstract:This article presents the design and the experimental tests of a bioinspired robot mimicking the cownose ray. These fish swim by moving their large and flat pectoral fins, creating a wave that pushes backward the surrounding water so that the fish is propelled forward due to momentum conservation. The robot inspired by these animals has a rigid central body, housing motors, batteries, and electronics, and flexible pectoral fins made of silicone rubber. Each of them is actuated by a servomotor driving a link inside the leading edge, and the traveling wave is reproduced thanks to the flexibility of the fin itself. In addition to the pectoral fins, two small rigid caudal fins are present to improve the robot's maneuverability. The robot has been designed, built, and tested underwater, and the experiments have shown that the locomotion principle is valid and that the robot is able to swim forward, perform left and right turns, and do floating or diving maneuvers.

Abstract:Similar to other underwater robots, bionic robotic fish face entrapment risks when stranded due to wave action or water level drop. In this paper, we propose a locomotion strategy for a whale shark‐inspired robotic fish, enabling it to autonomously return to aquatic environments after being stranded on land. This strategy is informed by the terrestrial locomotion capabilities of mudskippers and is particularly significant given the considerable mass of such robotic fish, which compounds the difficulty of land‐based movement. First, we introduce a lightweight YOLOv5 model‐based algorithm for deep‐water area recognition, which identifies the direction for the bionic robot fish to re‐enter the water. Subsequently, pectoral fin‐based crawling gaits are designed by the innate two degrees of freedom within the existing pectoral fin structure of the robot. These gaits empower the robotic fish to move on a multitude of terrestrial terrains. Extended field experiments have validated the effectiveness of our water recognition algorithm and locomotion strategy, confirming the ability of the whale shark‐inspired robotic fish to perform successful water entry maneuvers from the shore. Additionally, the capability to traverse various landforms are also verified. This work provides valuable insights into self‐rescue mechanisms for stranding underwater robots and promotes practical applications of bionic robotics.

Abstract:Navigation is a critical ability for animal survival and is important for food foraging, finding shelter, seeking mates and a variety of other behaviors. Given their fundamental role and universal function in the animal kingdom, it makes sense to explore whether space representation and navigation mechanisms are dependent on the species, ecological system, brain structures, or whether they share general and universal properties. One way to explore this issue behaviorally is by domain transfer methodology, where one species is embedded in another species' environment and must cope with an otherwise familiar (in our case, navigation) task. Here we push this idea to the limit by studying the navigation ability of a fish in a terrestrial environment. For this purpose, we trained goldfish to use a Fish Operated Vehicle (FOV), a wheeled terrestrial platform that reacts to the fish's movement characteristics, location and orientation in its water tank to change the vehicle's; i.e., the water tank's, position in the arena. The fish were tasked to "drive" the FOV towards a visual target in the terrestrial environment, which was observable through the walls of the tank, and indeed were able to operate the vehicle, explore the new environment, and reach the target regardless of the starting point, all while avoiding dead-ends and correcting location inaccuracies. These results demonstrate how a fish was able to transfer its space representation and navigation skills to a wholly different terrestrial environment, thus supporting the hypothesis that the former possess a universal quality that is species-independent.
A proprioceptive DE sensor skin for a fish-like continuum robot

Abstract:The superior swimming ability of fish has encouraged the development of fish-like robots. To fully capture fish swimming kinematics a continuum under-actuated robot can be used, and there are many examples of such robots in the literature. But for realistic fish-like swimming in strong currents such robots will benefit from closed-loop feedback. We demonstrate how this can be achieved, underwater, using a stretchy neoprene sensing skin with embedded, discrete dielectric elastomer stretch sensors. The latest prototype skin, with 8 sensors, 4 on each side, is currently being evaluated on an underactuated tensegrity fish-like robot driven by a stepper motor. Carangiform movement of the body has been characterized using cameras and this data has been compared with a virtual model of the robot that uses sensor input for real-time model kinematic data. Four angles along the body defined the shape. A root mean square error between model and true camera angles of less than 3° was calculated for realistic cangiform motion at 0.5 Hz tail frequency.

Abstract:Locating sound sources such as prey or predators is critical for survival in many vertebrates. Terrestrial vertebrates locate sources by measuring the time delay and intensity difference of sound pressure at each ear 1,2,3,4,5 . Underwater, however, the physics of sound makes interaural cues very small, suggesting that directional hearing in fish should be nearly impossible 6 . Yet, directional hearing has been confirmed behaviourally, although the mechanisms have remained unknown for decades. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain this remarkable ability, including the possibility that fish evolved an extreme sensitivity to minute interaural differences or that fish might compare sound pressure with particle motion signals 7,8 . However, experimental challenges have long hindered a definitive explanation. Here we empirically test these models in the transparent teleost Danionella cerebrum , one of the smallest vertebrates 9,10 . By selectively controlling pressure and particle motion, we dissect the sensory algorithm underlying directional acoustic startles. We find that both cues are indispensable for this behaviour and that their relative phase controls its direction. Using micro-computed tomography and optical vibrometry, we further show that D. cerebrum has the sensory structures to implement this mechanism. D. cerebrum shares these structures with more than 15% of living vertebrate species, suggesting a widespread mechanism for inferring sound direction.

Abstract:Path integration is a powerful navigational mechanism whereby individuals continuously update their distance and angular vector of movement to calculate their position in relation to their departure location, allowing them to return along the most direct route even across unfamiliar terrain. While path integration has been investigated in several terrestrial animals, it has never been demonstrated in aquatic vertebrates, where movement occurs through volumetric space and sensory cues available for navigation are likely to differ substantially from those in terrestrial environments. By performing displacement experiments with Lamprologus ocellatus , we show evidence consistent with fish using path integration to navigate alongside other mechanisms (allothetic place cues and route recapitulation). These results indicate that the use of path integration is likely to be deeply rooted within the vertebrate phylogeny irrespective of the environment, and suggests that fish may possess a spatial encoding system that parallels that of mammals.

Bioinspired flatfish detection using electrical impedance measurements

Abstract:Bottom trawling for flatfish by means of tickler chains has a high ecological impact due to the continuous seabed disturbance, low selectivity and high fuel costs. This issue could be significantly mitigated by using localized startle stimuli, triggered by a detection system that selectively targets flatfishes of landable size. Flatfish, however, constitute a significant challenge for remote detection, due to their low optical and acoustical signatures. Some species of predatory fish feeding on flatfish overcome this issue by using electroreception to localize they prey, even if it is buried in bottom sediments. We take this phenomenon as an inspiration in an attempt to develop a biomimetic remote fish detection technique based on electrical impedance measurements. We constructed a detection system including a set of electrodes and a low-cost analog front-end. The electrodes were mounted on a dedicated frame and dragged above a layer of sand inside a tank with sea water and several common sole (Solea solea). An underwater camera was used to acquire video recordings synchronized with impedance data for reference. We demonstrate that fish presence below the electrodes manifests itself by changes in the measured resistance and reactance values. This phenomenon occurs even if the fish is covered with a layer of sand. The results demonstrate the potential of bioinspired remote flatfish detection, which could be highly useful for monitoring or targeted stimulation.
Vision on the high seas: spatial resolution and optical sensitivity in two procellariiform seabirds with different foraging strategies

Abstract:Procellariiform or 'tubenosed' seabirds are challenged to find prey and orient over seemingly featureless oceans. Previous studies have found that life-history strategy (burrow versus surface nesting) was correlated to foraging strategy. Burrow nesters tended to track prey using dimethyl sulphide (DMS), a compound associated with phytoplankton, whereas surface-nesting species did not. Burrow nesters also tended to be smaller and more cryptic, whereas surface nesters were larger with contrasting plumage coloration. Together these results suggested that differences in life-history strategy might also be linked to differences in visual adaptations. Here, we used Leach's storm petrel, a DMS-responder, and northern fulmar, a non-responder, as model species to test this hypothesis on their sensory ecology. From the retinal ganglion cell density and photoreceptor dimensions, we determined that Leach's storm petrels have six times lower spatial resolution than the northern fulmars. However, the optical sensitivity of rod photoreceptors is similar between species. These results suggest that under similar atmospheric conditions, northern fulmars have six times the detection range for similarly sized objects. Both species have extended visual streaks with a central area of highest spatial resolution, but only the northern fulmar has a central fovea. The prediction that burrow-nesting DMS-responding procellariiforms should differ from non-responding species nesting in the open holds true for spatial resolution, but not for optical sensitivity. This result may reflect the fact that both species rely on olfaction for their nocturnal foraging activity, but northern fulmars might use vision more during daytime.
