Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases
Abstract:As a complication of obesity, type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that is difficult to cure. However, interventional treatment of bariatric surgery makes it possible to alleviate type 2 diabetes. Thus, perioperative blood glucose monitoring has become the key course of treatment. While the existing generic HbA1c is a powerful tool for examining overall blood glucose levels, it still has some limitations as a daily measure of blood glucose levels and as a judge of the effectiveness of bariatric surgery. Using the Time-in-range measurement and its derivatives is a better way to evaluate short-term blood glucose fluctuations and to compensate for the lack of HbA1c value. As an added benefit, these promising indicators may be used to predict preoperative risk in bariatric surgery, as well as to better monitor blood glucose levels. On this basis, time-in-range is a promising indicator for both the diagnosis of diabetes and the preoperative and postoperative prediction and evaluation.
