Global minimum sturctural searches show that AuB8- possesses a chair-like structure, which can be viewed as Au+ bonded to the edge of the doubly-aromatic B82- borozene, Au+[η2-B82-]. Chemical bonding analyses reveal that the AuB8- is a novel borozene complex with unique Au-borozene bonding.

Abstract:A theoretical study on the geometries and electronic structures of W@Au 12 AE (AE=NO + , BF, CN – , or BO – ) was carried out to gain insight into interactions between W@Au 12 and ligands isoelectronic with CO. The best configuration for the adsorption site is on-top type for all five complexes. After complexing with boron ligands (BF or BO – ), the axial Au–W bond distance in W@Au 12 is lengthened notably, but NO + has the opposite effect on the axial Au–W bond. A charge transfer and energy decomposition analysis shows that the metal–ligand bonds have enhanced σ-donation strength from NO + to BO – . Furthermore, the A–E bond strength in the complexes becomes weaker with stronger π-back-donation interactions. Finally, W@Au 12 CO has the largest HOMO–LUMO gap, making it the most stable in terms of kinetic stability.

Abstract:Gold cation-water complexes with attached argon atoms are produced via a laser vaporization supersonic cluster source. The [Au(H2O)(n)Ar-x](+) (n = 1-8; x = 1 or 2) complexes are each mass selected and studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the OH stretching frequency region to explore the coordination and solvation structures of the Au+ cation. Density functional calculations have been performed, and the calculated vibrational spectra are compared to the experimental spectra to identify the gas-phase structures of the Au(H2O)(n)(+) complexes. Confirming previous theoretical predications, the first coordination shell of the Au + cation contains two water molecules forming a linear O-Au+-O arrangement; subsequent water molecules bind to the two H2O ligands of the Au(H2O)(2)(+) core ion via hydrogen bond forming of the second hydration shell, which is complete at n = 6. For the complexes with n <= 7, the experimental spectrum can in general be assigned to the predicted global minimum structure. However, the spectrum suggests that two or more conformers coexist for the n = 8 complex, indicating that the identification of a single global minimum becomes less important upon increasing the number of solvating water molecules.

Abstract:Atomically precise metal clusters are now in the research spotlight, owing to the precise correlation between the physicochemical properties and their atomic-packing structures at an atomic-level. Herein we synthesized an Au8 cluster capped by four ferrocene ligands (DPPF), in which the ferrocene not only can direct the precise formation of the Au8 cluster, but also can solidify the structural pattern of the Au8 cluster. The Au8(DPPF)4 clusters as heterogeneous catalysts can achieve efficiently catalytic performances for the CO oxidation reaction, mainly due to the resistance to aggregation into large particles under reaction conditions. Our results suggest that the homolytic phosphine dissociation nature and the postdissociation reconstruction effect induced by Fe may enhance the catalytic performances of Au8(DPPF)4.

Abstract:The icosahedral Au13 5+ core is a recurrent building block in ligand-protected gold clusters involving an 8-cluster electron 1S21P6 electronic shell. Such a prototypical structure enables a spherical aromatic behavior as given by long-range magnetic shielding. Recently, the Au20(tBu3P)8 cluster featuring a contrasting cuboctahedral core with formally neutral gold atoms appears as a novel core architecture with the potential to be considered as another potential building block towards functional nanostructures. Here, we explore the ligand-core interaction and spherical aromatic characteristics of Au20(tBu3P)8, in order to provide a direct connection to classical icosahedral spherical aromatic compounds, now involving a cuboctahedral core structure. Such characteristics suggest rationalization of their robustness in terms of certain electron counts, enabling a shielding cone property in ligand-protected metallic clusters, which favors bridging organic and inorganic planar/spherical aromatic species towards the unification of the aromaticity concept and designing guidelines for further achievements.

Abstract:Functionalization of ligated metal nanoclusters with versatile ligands is highly desired for wide applications. Lewis acids have shown promise in multiple realms such as self-assembly and catalysis, which may endow nanoclusters with diverse functions. However, metal nanoclusters with Lewis acid surface have not been reported. Here, the functionalization of a bimetallic nanocluster Au8Ag8(C(sic)CR)(16) with triarylborane (TAB) is reported, which exhibits enhanced Lewis acidity. By using single-crystal X-ray crystallography, the structure of the nanocluster with 16 boron receptor sites is confirmed, which presents approximate to 15-fold enhancement of quenching efficiency in sensing fluoride compared to that of free triarylborane ligand. By the combined analysis using ultrafast transient absorption and photoluminescent (PL) decay measurements, the quenching mechanism of Au8Ag8 to fluoride is elucidated. The PL quenching is realized via two pathways with enhanced non-radiation energy dissipation, i.e., prolonged electron-phonon coupling and reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). This work may open a new route to diverse applications of metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:A stable core-shell structure with Ih symmetry, Au12@Au30, has been investigated by first-principles calculations. It is composed of an icosahedron core and an icosidodecahedron shell. The stability of the core-shell Au42 structure is verified by vibrational frequency analysis and molecular dynamics NVT simulations. Both the frontier molecular orbitals and the spin density of states show obvious s-d hybridization characteristics. The adaptive natural density partitioning analysis demonstrate multi-center bonds, twenty 6-center {\sigma} bonds ,and one 12-center {\sigma} bond, which are of great importance for the core-shell structural stability. In this core-shell nanostructure, there are also a large number of one-center valence lone electron pairs with the characteristics of d-like orbitals, so that the proposed Au12@Au30 could be used in medicine and catalysis fields.

Abstract:Recently an all-metal aromatic sandwich compound of a [Sb3Au3Sb3](3-) ion has been synthesized and characterized experimentally, which indicates that there might exist a variety of stable all-metal sandwich complexes. The intralayer and interlayer chemical bonding interaction in this system plays significant roles in their stability, chemical properties and functionalities. Here we report a systematic theoretical study on the geometries, electronic structures, and chemical bonding of the [Sb3Au3Sb3](3-) ion and its congeners of [X3Au3X3](3-) (X = N, P, As, Sb, Bi, Uup) as well as [X3M3X3](3-) (M, X = Cu, As; Ag, Bi; Au, Sb; Rg, Uup) to understand the special stabilities of these species. Additional studies are also performed on the oligomers [Sb-3(Au3Sb3)(n)](3-) (n = 1-4) to explore whether the sandwich compound can form stable extended systems. Through extensive theoretical analyses, we have shown that among the [Au3X6](3-) (X = N, P, As, Sb, Bi, Uup) species, [Sb3Au3Sb3](3-) is most stable due to superb matching of Sb-3 and Au-3 in both geometric size and fragment orbital energies. The significant stability of the [Au3Sb6](3-) ion is determined by the interlayer (p-d-p)sigma interactions between the vertical Au 5d6s hybrid orbitals of Au-3 and Sb 5p(pi) orbitals of the Sb-3 rings. Each Sb-3 ring demonstrates unique sigma aromaticity, which remains when the complex is extended to oligomers. The results suggest that it is likely that there might exist other stable [A(p)M(p)A(p)](x-) (M = transition metals, A = main group elements, p = 3, 4, 5, ...) sandwich ions and oligomers.

Abstract:Inverse sandwich structure has been computationally predicted for uranium boride and extended into the series of actinide element (An) from Th to Cm. Electronic structure and chemical bonding of these novel compounds have been analyzed using density functional theory and multireference wave-function based methods. We report the trend of An2B8 in electronic structure and bonding, and found that (d–π)π and (d–p)δ account the most important stability for An2B8. The (f–p)δ bond provides extra stabilization for Pa2B8 and U2B8, owed to extensive interaction of An-B8-An, resulting in short distance of Pa−Pa and U−U bond.

Abstract:Mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy was employed to investigate the geometrical and electronic properties of AuS2H-/0. The comprehensive comparison between the experiment and theoretical calculations establishes that the ground-state AuS2H- anion has a mixed-ligand structure [SAuSH]- with an unsymmetrical S-Au-S unit. Further chemical bonding analyses on AuS2H and comparison with the isoelectronic AuS2- suggest that the unique S-Au-S unit in these species features two three-center, three-electron π-bonding, and one three-center, two-electron σ-bonding. The isoelectronic replacement of the extra electron in AuS2- by the H atom can lead to σ bonding evolution from the electron-sharing bond to the dative bond. These findings are conducive to the fundamental understanding of the intrinsic stability of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters and their delicate ligand design to achieve desirable properties.

Abstract:Using density functional theory calculations, here we show that a series of B(x)Au(x)2- (x = 5-12) dianions possesses structure and bonding similar to the famous deltahedral closo-borane cages, B(x)H(x)2-. Effective atomic charges on Au in B(x)Au(x)2- are very similar to those on H in B(x)H(x)2-, indicating that Au in the closo-auroboranes is indeed analogous to H in the closo-boranes. The present theoretical predictions of B(x)Au(x)2- suggest that the closo-auroborane species are viable new chemical building blocks that may be synthesized in bulk. The Au atoms in the closo-auroboranes represent highly atomically dispersed Au and may potentially exhibit novel catalytic and chemical properties.

Abstract:Using the super valence bond model, a generalized chemical picture for the electronic shells of an Au20 pyramid is given. It is found that Au20 can be viewed to be a superatomic molecule, of which its superatomic 16c-16e core (T) is in D(3)S hybridization bonded with four vertical Au atoms for the molecule-like (TAu4) electronic shell-closure. Based on such a superatom-atom bonding model, TX4 (X = F, Cl, or Br) are predicted to be very stable. Such a superatom-atom T-Au/T-X bonding enriches the scope of chemistry.
Theoretical Investigation on One-Electron ϕ···ϕ Bonding in Diuranium Inverse Sandwich U2B6 Complex Enabled by a B6 Ring

Abstract:Traditional σ, π, and δ types of covalent chemical bonding have been extensively studied for nearly a century. In contrast, ϕ-type bonding involving nf (n = 4, 5) orbitals has received less attention due to their high contraction and minimal orbital overlap. Herein, we theoretically predict a singly occupied ϕ···ϕ bonding between two 5f orbitals, facilitated by B6 group orbitals in the hexa-boron diuranium inverse sandwich structure of U2B6. From ab initio quantum chemical calculations, the global minimum structure has a septuplet state with D6h symmetry. Chemical bonding analyses reveal that the 5f and 6d atomic orbitals of the two uranium atoms interact with the ligand orbitals of the central B6 ring, exhibiting favorable energy matching and symmetry compatibility to form delocalized σ-, π-, δ-, and ϕ-type bonding orbitals. Notably, even though the ϕ···ϕ bonding orbital is singly occupied, it still has a significant role in stability and cannot be overlooked. Furthermore, the U2B6 cluster model can be viewed as a building block of UB2 solid materials from both geometric and electronic perspectives. This work predicts the first example of ϕ···ϕ bonding, highlighting the complexity and diversity of chemical bonds formed in actinide boride clusters.

Abstract:We report the total structure determination of a covalently bonded nanocluster polymer [Au7Ag9(dppf)(3)(CF3CO2)(7)BF4](n) (1). This features a one-dimensional linear chain, consisting of unique molecular building blocks, Au7Ag8(dppf)(3)(CF3CO2)(7) clusters, which are linked together by Ag-O bonds rather than Au-Au interactions or bidentate organic bridges as previously reported.

Abstract:The electronic structures and absorption spectra of AumAgn (m+n=8) clusters have been investigated using time-dependent density functional response theory. We have discovered that the vertical ionization potentials, highest occupied molecular orbital level, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level and binding energies of the most stable binary AumAgn are intermediate between those of Ag8 and Au8 clusters. The analysis of the low-energy absorption spectra shows that the dominant excitation energies and the corresponding oscillator strengths exhibit an obvious odd–even oscillation with the variation of the number of Au atoms. The odd–even oscillation character indicates that the optical properties of AumAgn can be tuned by changing the stoichiometries. The excitation of electrons to exterior atoms plays a key role in optical responses of AumAgn clusters.
